programme If you are eager to focus on both the technical and non-technical aspects of civil engineering objects and systems, then the Master’s in Civil Engineering and Management is the programme for you. The Civil Engineering and Management Master’s is the premier programme in the Netherlands that focuses extensively on both the technical and non-technical aspects of planning, design, realization and maintenance of civil engineering objects and systems. The high-speed train, the Betuwe freight railway, dike improvements and the ‘Manhattan on the Meuse’ development project in Rotterdam are all technologically feasible projects. Technology, however, is not the only determining factor in the result. Political policy, participation and permission procedures, land expropriation, environmental impact studies, costs, budgeting and price control, logistic efficiency, safety and many other factors must be taken into account early in the planning phase of real estate and infrastructure projects. This requires engineers who have mastered
the process and who can oversee, analyse and predict all aspects of the design and execution of civil engineering projects. The Civil Engineering and Management Master’s will train you to be just such an engineer. You will be an engineering professional who is capable of combining the technical and non-technical aspects of these kinds of major projects.
We will make your Master’s an interesting and challenging journey: an adventure that will shape your future
SPECIALIZATIONS Construction Process Management This specialization focuses on the development and delivery of infrastructure and real estate projects. You will learn about the analysis, design and control of the integral construction process, the performance of construction process organizations and the coordination of the activities and roles of the numerous parties involved. You will take an integrated approach to the entire construction process, including sub-processes. The various subjects in the programme address such issues as plan development management at the conceptual phase, public-private partnerships, design management, sustainable building, risk analysis and management, IT and logistics as well as market/ organizational forms.
Transportation Engineering and Management This specialization deals with the behaviour, performance and management of traffic and transport systems. You will learn about the engineering, socioeconomic, spatial and environmental aspects of these systems and about various aspects of human behaviour in respect to their potential use. Transport planning and traffic management issues are yet another key topic covered. You will take an integrated approach to studying travel demand, infrastructural supply, maintenance, performance and control. You will
make use of a number of different tools for analysing traffic systems on different scales of space and time and for evaluating the impact of human interventions. You will address topics such as area-wide dynamic traffic management, intelligent transport systems, urban transport, sustainable development, traffic monitoring and evacuation planning. You will apply a methodological perspective to modelling, strategic planning, data fusion, evaluation methods and dynamic optimization.
Water Engineering and Management This specialization focuses on the behaviour and management of water systems (e.g. rivers, estuaries, coastal zones and seas). You will learn about the physical and social-economic aspects of water management. You will become familiar with a variety of tools for analysing long-term behaviour and for evaluating the impact of human interventions on different functions of the water system. The specialization also looks at the role of models and uncertainty in the decision-making processes. You will become conversant in such topics as flood protection, water retention, water quality management and river/sea bed development.

University of Twente students Students holding a BSc degree in Advanced Technology, Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering & Management, Applied Physics or Mechanical Engineering from the University of Twente qualify for direct admission,
Career OPPORTUNITIES Graduates of the Master’s in CEM generally begin their professional careers on staff at government institutions, research centres, engineering firms or with contractors, where they are responsible for the integration of technical and non-technical aspects of complicated infrastructure and real estate projects. After a few years, they usually take on the role of project manager. Alumni were surveyed two years after graduation: - 100% of graduates found a job within 3 months of graduation (58% within 1 month). - 86% of graduates hold a position for which a degree in Civil Engineering or related field was required. - 95% of graduates hold a position for which a degree from an institute of higher education was required, 62% hold a position for which an academic degree was required. - 81% of graduates indicate that their capabilities are well utilized in their job. - 90% of graduates indicate that the CEM Master’s programme offers a good basis for employment in the professional field.
100% of our graduates found a job within 3 months of graduation (58% within 1 month) - 86% of graduates indicate that the CEM Master’s programme offers a good basis for the further development of knowledge and skills. About 10% of CEM graduates enter a PhD programme.

This Master’s programme provides you with an insight into the most important aspects of managing a building project. What I like is that the emphasis is placed on the early stages of a project, and not only on the construction phase itself. Apart from a thorough knowledge of building projects, you will also obtain academic and analytical skills, which you can employ in the building industry but also in other sectors. In one course, we had to develop a plan to redevelop an old theatre in the inner city of Enschede. We had to deal with many stakeholders and as in real life, their wishes changed continuously. On top of that we had to work under significant time pressure, which is also the case in the real world. This project taught us to work together more efficiently, and how to cope with the environment, communication issues and time pressure. Since I was happy with my Bachelor’s programme at the University of Twente, it was a logical step to pursue my Master’s programme here too. Twente has a good

reputation and its graduates are in high demand in professional practice. The Bachelor’s programme contains many technical courses and gives you a solid basis. But in my opinion, that’s not enough to bring out the best in you and to provide you with enough knowledge to find a challenging job. The Master’s programme teaches you to address a project from a management perspective. It gives you much more insight into how projects are set up and carried out.
