master’s degree

Chemical Engineering

Welcome to the Faculty of Science and Technology! When choosing a Master’s programme, it is wise to look one step ahead. What would you like to do after completing your degree? Are you thinking about a job in industry, consultancy, teaching or research? All of these options are open to you once you have obtained your Master of Science degree from the Faculty Science and Technology at the University of Twente. However, the question remains of how to make the right choice among these options, and how best to prepare yourself for the future. Prof. dr. Gerard van der Steenhoven, dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology At the Faculty of Science and Technology we help students making this choice. Some Master’s specializations are more oriented towards science, whereas engineering plays a more dominant role in others. Moreover, by suggesting additional elective courses in business administration or innovation, for example, or by arranging projects with one of our industrial partners, our students become much more familiar with the range of possibilities open to them. In addition to helping you shape your own future, our Master’s programmes are very topical, incorporating the latest developments in applied physics, nanotechnology, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering or technical medicine. Master’s projects can either be more scientific in nature, or more closely related to

applications in domains such as sustainable energy or health technology. Most projects will be carried out at the MESA+ institute for nanotechnology, or the MIRA institute for biomedical technology, both of which provide an excellent research environment. We look forward to welcoming you to one of our programmes. Students rank our programmes very highly, and most obtain their degree in the nominal two years. Be assured that you will have a thoroughly enjoyable and productive time at the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Twente.

programme To be a chemical engineer you need a keen, creative mind, and expertise that besides chemistry spans fields such as fluid dynamics, thermodynamics and applied mathematics. The Master’s in Chemical Engineering (CHE) encompasses the fields of chemistry, materials science and process engineering. It puts you at the forefront of research and development in innovative chemical processes, novel materials and new products. You will benefit from our strong links with high profile research, including Mesa+, the Netherlands’ leading nanotechnology institute, and MIRA, institute for biomedical research. You will harness the latest technology and techniques to address the challenges that face society. Discover whether biomass conversion can provide lasting energy solutions or explore the potential of membrane technology to purify water or to generate power by osmosis. Alternatively, you can use your knowledge of

SPECIALIZATIONS

biomolecules to develop new materials or work on nanomaterials to create new solar cells and alternative forms of energy storage. You will be treated as a junior colleague from early on in your Master’s, giving presentations, writing articles and getting involved in grant applications. CHE is a highly international programme. You will write and present in English, and you will have plenty of opportunity to complete an internship abroad.

You will harness the latest technology and techniques to address the challenges that face society In separation technology, you can study a variety of processes that use solid or liquid separation agents, including membrane technology, adsorptive separations of gas and liquid mixtures, extraction, membranes developed for selective gas separation, sub-micron filtration processes, affinity separation for selective protein recovery, and facilitated oxygen transport. Other research themes include the study of catalytic processes and catalytic materials, the conversion of biomass and the modelling of processes.

Molecular & Materials Engineering Chemical & Process Engineering The Chemical & Process Engineering (CPE) specialization focuses on designing processes that function as effectively as possible within their technological, economic, societal and social parameters. You will learn to integrate knowledge of transport phenomena, chemical reactor design, separation technology, plant design, process development, process control and economic and social sciences. You will examine a range of research themes, such as multiphase and other novel reactors, reactive separation processes, and development and design of specific processes for direct applications in the chemicals or process industry.

The Molecular & Materials Engineering (MME) specialization focuses on the design, preparation, processing, application and analysis of novel materials with high-tech properties. In the field of materials chemistry, the specialization explores polymers with defined molecular and mesoscopic structures, inorganic and organometallic materials, and the engineering and analysis of polymer surfaces and interfaces. Current research in organic materials (polymers) is dominated by nanoscale projects geared toward the controlled fabrication of complex polymeric architectures and their use in functional molecular systems (i.e. devices such as molecular motors, sensors and actuators). Other projects explore the potential of

Chemical Engineering

biocompatible and biodegradable polymers in tissue engineering. Another area of research involves the use of polymeric nanoparticles with customized surfaces, as carriers for targeted drug or gene delivery. In the field of inorganic materials, the focus is on metal/ ceramic composites with special electrical properties and thin film technology. Areas of application include nanoelectronics and spintronics, optical systems, fuel cells, solar cells, fluidics and bio-nanosensors. Other

research projects in this field involve the controlled preparation of (nano-sized) particles for catalysis and the use of porous membranes in gas separation. Molecular technology is being developed to facilitate the controlled preparation of large organic assemblies (2D and 3D), accurately defined right down to the molecular level. Nanoparticles are being studied individually, with the aims of manipulating their shape and function and of interfacing with these assemblies.

Admission requirements Dutch HBO students

International students

Graduates with a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study of a Dutch HBO may be considered for admission. In most cases students will first need to complete a bridging course.

International students with a BSc degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry and a CGPA of at least 75% of the maximum score are invited to apply for admission. In addition international students need to pass an English language test.

University of Twente and Dutch university students Students holding a BSc degree in Chemical Engineering from one of the Dutch Universities of Technology or the University of Groningen qualify for direct admission, conditions may apply. Students with other relevant Bachelor’s degrees from the University of Twente or another Dutch University will be considered for admission.

Student’s Touch

‘The University of Twente has an international atmosphere, and a good reputation’ NAME Ole Buchholz

Although this leaflet was compiled with the utmost care, no rights can be derived from its contents.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN Germany

Ole studied Process Engineering in Germany. He is now studying for his Master’s in Chemical Engineering at the University of Twente, and chose for the Chemical and Process Engineering specialization. After he finishes his studies, he would like to start working in one of the leading Chemical Engineering companies. He’s also thinking about founding his own company in the future. “I chose this Master’s primarily because of the Chemical and Process Engineering specialization. With this Master’s, I can expand my knowledge in the fields of study in which I am really interested. Now, I feel comfortable in discussing, writing and solving problems in English. My prior education failed to teach me these skills. Secondly, I wanted to pursue an international Master’s programme, especially in the Netherlands. The University of Twente has an international atmosphere, and a good reputation. The Dutch education system is great and it allows you to develop according to your individual strengths. Dutch students are open-minded and it’s easy to solve problems – study-related or otherwise – with them.

For one course we had to design a chemical plant. We had to work in a structured way with strict planning. I was in an international team of four students. Because of the excellent supervision during this assignment and the discussions with the teaching staff, we were able to make the assignment a great success. This year, I want to put the knowledge I gained in this course to practical use during my internship in Switzerland.”
