PREFACE DESIGNLAB With the DesignLab, the University of Twente offers dedicated spaces for creative, multidisciplinary problem solving of societal problems.

Although the DesignLab is getting more well known within and outside the university, there are still plenty of creative minds that are unfamiliar with its possibilities.

Since real world problems can be extremely complex, there is a need to work across boundaries, disciplines and organisations. Students, professors, researchers, entrepreneurs and governments are invited to work together on an equal footing in the DesignLab.

Since the DesignLab supports all society enhancing projects and events, we are open to anyone. Are you looking for a space to perform your creative class, a workshop or a mind blowing reading? We can help.

Together we will find new possibilities for current societal problems with science by way of creative design methods.

02

THE LOOKBOOK

In this LookBook you can get an impression of our facilities and possible set-ups for your event. Beside this, we can provide help by out of the box solutions for your multidimensional problems. This way, we can make your event as successful as possible.

OPENING HOURS

We are open weekdays from 08:30 until 20:00h. Feel free to come and work on the development of your ground-breaking research, education and events

IDEATE LET’S GET THINGS STARTED...

SET-UPS

IDEATE together with LOUNGE and CONCEPTUALISE/PROTOTYPE creates the flexible open space that typifies the DesignLab. When there is no event planned, these spaces serve as public project work areas. Its open character makes this room perfect for events like readings, hackathons and conferences, but it is also suited for lectures.

There are three set ups available: One plenary set up, a project group set up and a combination of the two.

The space is offered with a lectern, a wireless microphone system and a plasma screen for presentations. Further more are two room dividers available.

LISTEN LIVE! The typical plenary set up is mainly used for presentations, readings and conferences. If you are looking to present a story to anyone that is interested, IDEATE is the perfect space. The open area will attract intentional and spontaneous guests to your event. When the crowd is smaller than the maximum capacity of the space the room dividers will be used. This will cut the room off from sounds but it will keep its open character.

09

THE START OF SOMETHING NEW The area upstairs represents the different steps of the design process. IDEATE represents, yes, the ideation phase. When the space is used in the combined setting, it is used how it was originally designed. During the first phase the participants are informed through a presentation. The large plasma screens help the presenter to communicate their story. The second phase is when the first ideas are generated. Many of the DesignLab’s brainstorms and crazy ideas have their origin here. Next to the available whiteboards and project work tables you can also make use of the brainstorming tables. Here you can express your thoughts through kinetic sand or LEGO.

10

COLLABORATE! When bigger groups need to work on their project, IDEATE is the place to be. In this setting, the whole room is used for project work tables. While the room was originally designed for the early phases of the design process, IDEATE provides a working space for nearly all conceptual project work. The space is also used for events with a project work character. Hackathons, design contests and start-up weekends often book IDEATE for their events.

11

LOUNGE CHILL...

INTERACT

Typically this space is being used for short, small and informal meetings. The long table is often used for small coffee breaks, but lunch is served here as well. The sofas are the perfect spot for a relaxed and intimate meeting.

The space offers enough space for approximately 30 people. With its central location in the DesignLab, it comes with a fridge, sink, water tap and water cooker. The catering of the Gallery can serve lunch or dinner here. The kitchen is a facility for all guests of the DesignLab and therefore we do not reserve this space separately.

PHILOSOPHY LAB & MEET GET TOGETHER The PHILOSOPHY LAB and MEET are two of the smaller rooms in the DesignLab. While the PHILOSOPHY LAB is reserved for the management team of the DesignLab, MEET can be booked by anyone. When you are planning a smaller meeting, this place is just what you need. Also for user tests, interviews or other situations where distractions from outside should be minimal, the room fits perfect. The size has its limits, and therefore we advise to book the room for a maximum of 6 persons at a time.

22

23

ROBOLAB, TEST & PLAYGROUND DESIGN THE FUTURE In the ROBOLAB and TEST, students and researchers can experiment with advanced technology in the area of robotics and Human Media Interaction. Next to the equipment that can be used through the BMS LAB (for an overview, see their website www.bmslab.utwente.nl), the designlab also offers research possibilities with the installation in PLAYGROUND where beamers light up 80 m² and motion trackers measure where users are located. In LOUNGE you can find the LED GO FLOOR. The pressure sensitive LED floor enables researchers to design software responding to

24

physical interaction. Both the LED GO FLOOR and the installation in the PLAYGROUND revolve around the research towards play with impact.

29

INFORM GET OUT YOUR BOX ;) The DesignLab offers a creative space where students, professors and business meet. For closed creative sessions of more than 15 participants the DesignLab offers INFORM. INFORM is able to host about 30 participants in this setting. In here, you can make use of the different creative materials DesignLab has to offer.

30

31

INFORM GET INSPIRED Spreading valuable information is important to the DesignLab. Therefore, DesignLab offers a space where speakers have the ability to inform and inspire. Providing space for about 60 people, this set-up offers space to the maximum amount of people in a closed setting. Due to the nature of the set up, it is mainly used for readings and conferences.

CONNECT In CONNECT you can find a mix of professors, researchers and project groups working in the DesignLab for a longer period of time. Due to the innovative shape of the desks, they can be arranged in many different setups. They can offer a generous desk for long periods of desk work, different project groups working together or meetings of different sizes. To get an overview of the possibilities of the different set ups, the lookbook offers the most important ones. Depending on the set-up, CONNECT offers a maximum of 24 people a space to work in

38

small groups and a maximum of 16 people at one table. If you are looking for a space to do long term desk work, CONNECT offers 12 spots.

The Illustration in the bottom left shows a selection of the possibilities where at most 2 people can be seated at a single table at once. This way a maximum of 24 people can work in CONNECT at the same time. This set-up is perfect for creative workshops and project groups where the groups are no bigger than 8 people.

39

For working longer periods of time it is convienent to have enough space. The CONNECT desks have plenty of desk space for one person. In theses settings the user has full access to the shelves, where personal belonging can be stored. This way there is room for up to 12 people.

40

If larger meetings are held in CONNECT, a number of options are available. When the tables are organized in a parallelogram 6 to14 people can be seated. When the combination is square shaped, 8 to 16 people can join at once.

OBSERVE AND YOU SHALL FIND EMPATHISE/INTERACT offer a plethora of techniques to do research on the human body. These two rooms are separated by a one-way mirror, so the researchers can observe the participants without distracting them. Together with the BMSlab, the DesignLab offers a large number of equipment for research on the human body and its behaviour. The room itself is equipped with an audio and video observation system, to keep track of all the activities of the participants during your research.

44

Furthermore, there are several virtual reality sets available, different devices for motion and eye tracking and various wearable wireless devices to collect real-time physiological data. For details, both the BMSlab and DesignLab can be contacted. The empathise offers space for about 6 researchers, while INTERACT can house up to 25 participants.
