MASTER OF SCIENCE FACULTY OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERINF, MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE

VERSIENUMMER: 2343 REVISIEDATUM: 06 04 2009 MENGMT0212

THE DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING OFFERS THIS TWO-YEAR MASTER’S PROGRAMME IN COOPERATION WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING. THE PROGRAMME COVERS THE WIDE FIELD OF MECHATRONICS, AND INVOLVES A SYNERGISTIC COMBINATION OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, ELECTRONICS, MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL IN THE DESIGN OF PRODUCTS AND PROCESSES. AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE THERE IS A TRADITION IN MECHATRONICS OF MORE THAN 15 YEARS. THE RESEARCH IS NOW EMBEDDED IN THE DREBBEL INSTITUTE FOR MECHATRONICS. EUROPE HAS MAJOR PLAYERS IN THE MECHATRONIC INDUSTRY: PHILIPS, ASML, ABB, THOMSON CSF, OCÉ AND OTHERS. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE After admission to the programme, the Examination Board establishes an individual programme, based on students’ previous education and experience, and usually a few bridging courses and the number of electives are stipulated. Also it is decided whether some non-technical courses are required and whether an individual project has to be completed. The master’s thesis project is, of course, always part of the programme. Normally the structure of the program is (in ECTS): – Bridging part 15 ECTS – Individual project 15 ECTS – Compulsory courses 20 ECTS – Elective courses 30 ECTS – Master’s thesis project 40 ECTS Bridging courses are meant to bridge a possible gap between your previous education and the master’s programme. A maximum of three courses can be part of the bridging programme.

Bridging programme for students with an EE background: – Statics – Dynamics 2 – Mechanics of materials 2 – Introduction to the finite element method Bridging programme for students with an ME background: – Instrumentation of embedded systems – Physical systems modelling for embedded systems – Linear systems The individual project with ample training in methodology, group work, presentation skills, planning and role of culture normally is part of the bridging programme.

2010 / 2011

The other courses are divided in two categories: compulsory courses and elective courses. The compulsory courses are: – Design principles – Mechatronic design of motion systems – Measurement systems for mechatronics – Digital control engineering Elective courses can be chosen from all available courses in the University, provided the programme is complementary and relevant in the opinion of the Examination Committee. All elective courses are 5 ECTS. The master’s thesis project is a research-oriented individual project where an engineering and scientific attitude must be proven. It is always carried out in one of the research projects of the groups involved or the Drebbel Institute and may involve third parties like industry or research institutions. Part of the thesis project may also be completed outside the University. This is approved and organized through the responsible supervisor. APPLICATION Start of the programme: August/September To apply, completed both the University application form and any additional department requirements (the specific programme application form, a covering letter explaining your motivation, and other documents). All information is on the graduate site (see Application form). Your application is judged to see whether your previous education and your motivation are suitable for participation in themaster’s programme. It is expected that a limited number of grants or loans will be available for students who have been accepted for the programme by the Admission Committee of the Department of Electrical Engineering. In some cases NXP Semiconductors (founded by Philips), and Shell select the students to be awarded scholarships. The financial support is sufficient for living cost and accommodation, and, sometimes but not always, tuition fees. After your academic admission you receive guidance about financial issues (if necessary), accommodation, insurance and (temporary) residence permit in The Netherlands. Students are advised to explore the financial support from other organizations. Please visit the WebPages of NUFFIC to see whether you can apply for a NFP fellowship. The application needs to be in our possession before 30 April to start with the programme at the beginning of the following academic year. Procedures, including visas, will often take several months. Therefore in general it is advised to send the application as soon as possible. If you need financial assistance, we need your application before 1 December for HSP applicants and before 1 January for students who want to apply for an NFP or SHELL scholarship in order to start the beginning of the following year. We are bound by the deadlines given by HSP, NFP and SHELL. Candidates should not assume that their place has been reserved without written confirmation from the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Twente.
