SCIENCE CAFÉ ENSCHEDE
OVERSTIJGT TECHNIEK DE MENS? ‘Over dertig jaar beschikken we over techniek die bovenmenselijke intelligentie kan creëren. Dat is het einde van de mensheid.’ Vernor Vinge, wiskundige en sf-auteur, liet er in zijn essay over Singularity (1993) weinig misverstand over bestaan: technologische ontwikkelingen volgen elkaar zo snel op dat er een singulariteit ontstaat waarbij de mens plaatsmaakt voor de machine. Het is nog geen 2023, maar zou het werkelijk zo’n vaart lopen? Prof.dr.ir. Fokko Jan Dijksterhuis, wetenschapshistoricus (UT) en bijzonder hoogleraar ideeëngeschiedenis (VU), laat zien dat wilde toekomstvoorspellingen van alle tijden zijn. Hij doceert het vak Geschiedenis van de Toekomst.

BEDROGEN DOOR JE OGEN Een witte jurk die zwart oogt? Een tekening van man met baard of is het een blote vrouw? Twee lijnen die naar elkaar toe lopen, maar evenwijdig blijken te zijn? Soms foppen onze ogen ons. Oftewel, hoe werken optische illusies? Rob van Lier stelt dat wij niet met onze ogen, maar met onze hersenen kijken. Hij vertelt over de wisselwerking tussen netvlies en brein. Is al onze waarneming misschien een illusie? Dr. Rob van Lier werkt bij het Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour (RU). Hij is gespecialiseerd in optische illusies en ontwerpt die ook zelf, waarmee hij twee keer een internationale prijs won.

PHOTO EXHIBITION
INSIDE SYRIA The photo exhibition Inside Syria displays photos of the war-torn city of Aleppo. The photos were taken in 2014 by the young Syrian photographer Fouad Hallak. Last winter Hallak fled his native city of Aleppo. He now lives in a Dutch refugee centre. Turning on the news today we see that the story of Aleppo is tragic, chaotic and full of destruction. In many of Hallak’s pictures however we also find strength, joy and above all, hope.
The exhibition Inside Syria is displayed from 6 to 23 September in the Vrijhof. In coproduction with Vrijhof Culture, Science Shop UT and Enschede for Peace. This program is part of the Dutch Peace Week.

SYMPOSIUM
SYRIA AT WAR Syria is torn apart by war and the future seems bleak. How did this conflict come into existence, which role plays the Assad-regime and what is at stake for world powers like the US, Russia and China? In the midst of all violence and destruction, civilians in Syria try to continue their daily lives. Under what conditions do they live, what kind of future awaits them and do they still have hope for peace?
Three Syria-experts will give their view: Lex Runderkamp is travelling reporter in the Arab world for the NOS. Sakir Khader is a journalist for the Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant and writes about refugees and the Arab world. Fouad Hallak is photographer. He fled Syria and lives in the Netherlands.

LEZING + RIETVELDWEEK
GERRIT RIETVELD: VAN ROOD-BLAUWE STOEL TOT UT-CARILLON In elk designmuseum staat de rood-blauwe stoel van Gerrit Rietveld, nog steeds een revolutionair ontwerp. Behalve meubelontwerper was Rietveld ook een baanbrekend architect, denk aan het Rietveld-Schrรถderhuis in Utrecht. Strakke vlakken, primaire kleuren, geen poespas. Hij was ook nauw betrokken bij kunstbeweging De Stijl. Voor de UT-campus tekende hij een bezinningscentrum, waarvan alleen de carillontoren is gerealiseerd. In het kader van het 11e lustrum van de UT aandacht voor deze bijzondere man en zijn werk.
Deze lezing is onderdeel van de Rietveldweek die Studium Generale samen met Vrijhof Cultuur organiseert.

VAN COLD CASE TOT CYBERTERREUR
Ook al leven wij in een uiterst veilig land, gevaar ligt altijd op de loer. Een overstroming, aardbeving of windhoos kan zomaar toeslaan. En wat zou er gebeuren als een cyberterrorist het internet platlegt? Wist je dat hackers de signalen van je autosleutel kunnen kopiëren om zo je auto te stelen? Gelukkig wordt er ook veel gedaan om de wereld veiliger te maken; zo kan nanotechnologie de politie helpen om cold cases op te lossen.

DESCARTES – THINK ABOUT IT! Everybody knows Descartes’ famous I think therefore I am, but what does this actually mean and how did he arrive at this oneliner? Why is he regarded as one of the most revolutionary philosophers? Johnny Søraker will argue that it is a shame that this phrase has become a cliché, because it not only holds the key to understanding modern philosophy, it also gave rise to challenging problems in science. Dr. Johnny Søraker is assistant professor at the department of philosophy (UT).

HET BESTE BEENTJE VOOR MET EEN PROTHESE? ‘Blade Babe’ Marlou van Rhijn won op haar onderbeenprotheses goud op de 100, 200 en 400 meter. Zulke wereldrecords spreken tot de verbeelding. Of denk aan de man die door een exoskelet beter kan bewegen. Minder zichtbaar zijn de vele mensen die door ongeluk of ziekte een kunstarm of -been krijgen. Hoe kun je door revalidatie zo goed mogelijk functies herstellen als je een ledemaat mist? Welke soorten prothesen worden ontwikkeld? Welke innovaties liggen in het verschiet? Prof.dr. Hans Rietman is revalidatiearts, hoogleraar Revalidatiegeneeskunde en -technologie (UT) en lid managementteam van Roessingh Research and Development.

VERITAS-FORUM
EEN WERELDBEELD MET ÒF ZONDER GOD?
Bestaat God? Die vraag is zo oud als de mensheid. Deze avond van Veritas-forum en Studium Generale richt zich op de christelijke God. Rik Peels vindt geloven een natuurlijke en nuttige intuïtie. Bovendien zijn er goede argumenten die pleiten voor het bestaan van God. Waldo Swijnenburg vindt de argumenten van atheïsten redelijker. Daarnaast ook aandacht voor de zin van het leven: leidt atheïsme tot pessimisme en nihilisme? Kan een christen wel open-minded zijn? Kortom: wat is de schoonheid en troost van een wereldbeeld met òf zonder God? Dr. Rik Peels, theoloog en filosoof, werkt aan de Vrije Universiteit. Hij promoveerde in 2012 bij Herman Philipse, erkend atheïst. In 2013 publiceerde hij met Stefan Paas God bewijzen. Drs. Waldo Swijnenburg, psycholoog, socioloog en filosoof. In 2015 publiceerde hij De schoonheid en troost van een wereldbeeld zonder God.

AANSLAG OP VERLICHTING EN RATIONALITEIT Is er een waarheid die we door inzicht en onderzoek kunnen blootleggen, of bepaalt wie het hardst schreeuwt wat voor waar doorgaat? Volgens postmoderne denkers hangt ons weten af van de tijd en de cultuur waarin we leven. Maar leidt dat niet tot te veel relativisme?
Prof.dr. Harry Kunneman, hoogleraar aan de Universiteit voor Humanistiek, reageert op de stelling van Beeckman. Kunneman, auteur van boeken als De waarheidstrechter, Postmoderne moraliteit en Het dikke ik, waardeert zowel de Verlichtingsidealen als de inzichten van postmoderne denkers.
Dr. Tinneke Beeckman geeft een lezing over haar boek Macht en onmacht, waarin zij stelt dat het postmoderne denken een aanval is op de Verlichting en ons geloof in de waarheid. Op grond waarvan kan je bijvoorbeeld nog stelling nemen tegen het terrorisme, zoals de aanslag op Charlie Hebdo? Heeft wetenschap zin zonder geloof in de waarheid?

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE From the moment Google’s deep learning machine AlphaGo defeated the world champion in Go, no escape seems possible: the machine becomes smarter than the human being. In certain fields of expertise this is already the case, however a universal intelligent machine is still a long way off. Max Welling offers a view into the fascinating world of artificial intelligence: how does a machine learn and actually becomes smart? Is this cleverness programmed in advance, or does it emerge from the complexity of the system? This lecture will separate facts from (science-)fiction. Prof.dr. Max Welling is professor Machine Learning (UvA) and co-founder of Scyfer BV, a company specialized in deep learning.

THE RHETORIC OF CLINTON AND TRUMP During the American presidential election a lot of mudslinging is going on. The meanest strategies are launched to eliminate the opponent. Donald Trump appears to be a master in framing; by using smart and very bold one-liners he manages to convince his audience. Which frames will Hillary Clinton use? At this Election Day Hans de Bruijn will expose rhetorical tricks of both candidates. Prof.mr.dr. Hans de Bruijn, professor Public Administration at the TU Delft, analyzes the language of politicians in his weekly column about framing for Trouw. He published the book Barack Obama en de kunst van de politieke toespraak. During the break popcorn will be served. Thereafter, we will discuss the current political situation with members of the UT-community, amongst which student Frank Kwakkelaar and prof. Ramses Wessel.

ACUPUNCTUUR: FILOSOFIE EN EFFECT In China is acupunctuur al eeuwenlang een manier om ziekten te genezen of pijnen te verlichten. Wat is de filosofie erachter? Hoe, op welke plekken en bij welke aandoeningen helpt het? En gaan acupunctuur en moderne geneeskunde in China hand in hand? Of zijn er wrijvingen, zoals soms in Nederland? Studenten Biomedische Technologie en Technische Geneeskunde hebben die wisselwerking onderzocht tijdens een studiereis en vertellen erover. Acupuncturist Martien Zeegers gaat in op de waarde van acupunctuur. Neuroloog Michel van Putten bekijkt het met een meer reguliere bril. Drs. Martien Zeegers is acupuncturist bij het Hwa To Acupunctuur Centrum, gelieerd aan het UMCG. Zij begeleidt studenten Geneeskunde. Prof.dr. Michel van Putten is hoogleraar klinische neurofysiologie (UT) en neuroloog (MST).

NEUROMAGICIAN VICTOR MIDS Neuromagic is a combination of illusionism, psychology, medicine and sleight of hand. While leaving the classical form of magic behind, Victor Mids takes his audience in an entertaining and intelligent way along a range of illusions and neuropsychological experiments. How easily will you be distracted? How do you erase someone’s memory? And does a free will actually exist? Find out how easy your own brain and senses are being fooled. Victor Mids MD is both illusionist and a doctor. He studied medicine and uses his medical knowledge about senses and brain for his illusions. Mids has a television show Mindf*ck in which he tricks famous people.

QUANTUM BLACK HOLES
Incorporating the gravitational force in theories of the sub-atomic particles is one of the greatest challenges in theoretical physics. Einstein predicted the existence of black holes, even sub-atomic ones. How do these tiny black holes and sub-atomic particles interact? Gerard ’t Hooft shows that the mathematics which describes the hydrogen atom can be applied to a black hole, since this must also be a quantum form of matter. It turns out that space and time take bizarre twists here. Prof.dr. Gerard ’t Hooft received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1999 for elucidating the quantum structure of electroweak interactions. ’t Hooft is affiliated to the Centre for Extreme Matter and Emergent Phenomena (UU). Moderator: prof.dr.ir. Alexander Brinkman, professor Quantum Transport in Matter (UT).

WAAROM JE ONLINE GEEN GEHEIMEN KUNT BEWAREN Bekruipt je soms ook het gevoel dat er iemand meekijkt wanneer je googelt? Dat klopt! Slimme algoritmes analyseren je zoekgedrag en voorspellen jouw interesses. En als je iets liket op Facebook komt dit bedrijf iets te weten over jouw drijfveren en vrienden. In de digitale wereld bestaan er bijna geen geheimen meer. Deze lezing over internetprivacy staat stil bij de invloed van grote internetspelers, de meeleespraktijken van de NSA en bij onze achteloze internetgewoontes. Dimitri Tokmetzis MSc is historicus en datajournalist van De Correspondent. In 2012 publiceerde hij het boek De Digitale Schaduw over hoe risicoprofielen ons dagelijks leven meer en meer sturen.

SCIENCE CAFÉ ENSCHEDE
DE BANAAN IS ZIEK De banaan is een van de weinig stukken fruit met gevoel voor humor: de schil figureert in menige cartoon of slapstickfilm. Tegenwoordig valt er echter weinig meer te lachen, want de banaan is ziek. De grootste plantages worden geteisterd door een schimmelziekte en de wereldwijde productie dreigt hierdoor terug te lopen. Een groot probleem, aangezien het de voornaamste voedselbron is voor meer dan 400 miljoen mensen. Bananendokter Gert Kema probeert een oplossing te vinden. Prof.dr.ir. Gert Kema BSc (Wageningen University) is gespecialiseerd in gewasschimmels en leidt diverse onderzoeksprojecten naar bananenziektes. Side-kick: Luud Clercx MSc werkt bij TASTE, een organisatie die zich sterk maakt voor eerlijk en duurzaam geproduceerd voedsel. Talkshow host: prof.dr.ir. Peter-Paul Verbeek, hoogleraar Filosofie van Mens en Techniek (UT).

DICTEE
HET GROOT UT-DICTEE DER NEDERLANDSE TAAL Er is een megagroot verschil tussen e-mail en email. Kenners van de spelling weten dat: het eerste is elektronische post, het tweede een harde laag waarmee je aardewerk omhult. Voor de liefhebbers van een taalwedstrijd is er de vijfde editie van het UT-dictee. Prominenten, studenten, medewerkers en externen strijden om de eer. Dit jaar heeft de tekst een feestelijk tintje omdat de UT 55 jaar bestaat. Het dictee is weer geschreven door taalvirtuoos Paul de Kuyper. Ed Brinksma is de onvolprezen voordrager. Strenge doch rechtvaardige jury: Katja Hunfeld en Joyce Karreman.

KEYNOTE + SEMINAR
HOW TO BECOME AN UNSTOPPABLE GOAL ACHIEVER How do successful people become even more successful? Success is determined by your ‘inner game’. This keynote about the psychology of achievement will discuss some counter intuitive, yet highly effective mindsets and behaviors of unstoppable goal achievers. You do not have to be ill in order to get better! Paul Rulkens is an expert in high performance: the art of accelerating bold outcomes in the easiest, fastest and most elegant way possible. Paul’s work is based on psychology, neuroscience and common sense. Paul studied Chemical Engineering (UT) and is a former business leader with lots of international experience. He was trained as a standup comedian.
