INSPIRING EDUCATION Students at the University of Twente learn how to develop a broad perspective and become highly knowledgeable professionals who are able to combine and translate their skills into practical applications. One self-evident aspect of this is the importance of raising people’s awareness of sustainability. As an entrepreneurial university, we expect our students to be inquisitive and innovative, to internalize knowledge and to be able to look beyond the confines of their discipline and of their country’s borders.

The Twente Educational Model In 2013, the University of Twente launched the Twente Educational Model for undergraduate education, a radically new educational model to meet the needs of today’s students, who are accustomed to new, rapid methods of learning, interacting and cooperating. It offers a modular approach, stimulates students’ independent acquisition of knowledge and gives them more scope to pursue their interests. In this way, the Twente Educational Model places more emphasis on a profound and conceptual understanding of the heart of a discipline or domain, which is more important than factual knowledge of every single aspect of a given domain. The intensive study and regular feedback require a high level of student engagement. Training in collaborative work and presentation skills takes place ‘on the fly’. For instance, Electrical Engineering students at the end of their first year take part in a competition in which groups of students try to build the best-performing broadcast antenna. To prepare for this challenge, they are offered some modules on the mathematics and physics involved. It is up to them, however, to acquire the specific information they need to build the antenna, within a fixed budget.

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE TWENTE In 2013, the University of Twente launched a truly unique university college: University College Twente (ATLAS, Academy of Technology and Liberal Arts & Sciences). It is the first university college of engineering sciences in the Netherlands, and one of few in the world. University College Twente is all about excellent education and international ambition. It targets talented individuals who refuse to accept inferior solutions to complex issues – ambitious students who want to broaden their skills so they can handle a high level of complexity. In line with the Twente Educational Model, the programme of University College Twente is centred on problem solving. It is a fully English-taught BSc programme with a distinctive thematic approach and is at Honours level throughout. University College Twente graduates are admitted to prestigious national and international Master’s programmes. PROFESSIONAL DOCTORATE IN ENGINEERING The University of Twente offers Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) programmes in Civil Engineering, Energy & Process Technology, Healthcare Logistics, Maintenance and Robotics. PDEng trainees follow a two-year post-Master’s technological designer programme, where they learn how to design high level, creative and innovative solutions for complex issues with a multidisciplinary character. Consisting of an educational component at the university and a period of practical design work in industry, the programme combines academic research in an industrial context with taught modules in a range of related subjects. TECHNICAL MEDICINE HIGH TECH MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL Technical Medicine, recently awarded top-rated programme status, is a unique programme at the University of Twente. It combines thorough training in medical skills with deep insight into technology, thus preparing students for a role in innovative patient care. Thanks to a recent change in Dutch law, Technical Medicine graduates are entitled to register as medical professionals and treat patients independently. In this way, they fill the gap between engineers and doctors: the medical expert now has a high-tech colleague, who will be able to introduce and apply new technology to improve the patient’s health and safety. www.utwente.nl/tg

JUMP INTO THE FUTURE, ELECTRONICS WILL DESIGN ITSELF

Unexpected combinations, guts and team science are the three most important characteristics of the University of Twente’s new Design Lab. It links experts in the fields of biomedical technology, nanotechnology and IT to their counterparts in the social sciences, public and business administration, as well as to industrial designers. Enabling such meetings to take place may help to speed up the process of finding solutions to social challenges. This also makes Design Lab a new type of discussion partner for the business sector. The Design Lab is an international workspace and meeting place where researchers, students, entrepreneurs, business developers, government

bodies and artists can join forces to develop creative applications for new technologies, and where they are inspired to find unexpected, creative avenues of approach to solutions to social and economic challenges. New concepts and ideas are picked up and developed in a non-traditional fashion, after which prototypes can be immediately tested. The Design Lab brings international and regional parties together for interdisciplinary innovation projects. It also provides them with access to the pool of knowledge and talent that exists at, and around, the university. In addition, the Design Lab has an important ambition – to develop new disruptive technologies, based on the latest scientific insights, to solve the societal challenges of our time.

MESA+ INSTITUTE FOR NANOTECHNOLOGY MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology is a world leading nanotechnology research institute. MESA+ combines the disciplines of physics, electrical engineering, chemistry and mathematics. Around 575 researchers focus on new materials and nanostructures for a ide variety of ground-breaking technologies and applications such as lab-on-a-chip systems, sensors for early diagnostics, optics, solar cells, and unconventional computing. MESA+ has a solid track record of uniting scientific disciplines and initiating and promoting strategic national and international cooperation. With the openaccess Nano Lab infrastructure, MESA+ has access to 1250 m2 of cleanroom space, state-of-the-art research equipment and specialized group labs.

DEVELOPMENT OF FRAUD-PROOF CREDIT CARD MADE POSSIBLE BY QUANTUM PHYSICS Quantum optics has given us ground-breaking insights into the fundamental nature of light. In the flourishing field of nanophotonics, intricate nanostructures are being employed to control light in all its aspects. The combination of nanophotonics and quantum optics is expected to lead to a wealth of new fundamental scientific advances and applications. An elegant application, tentatively called the “Quantum Credit Card�, is based on use of an unclonable nanophotonic material. This is a unique way to provide security suitable, for instance, for government buildings and other high-security buildings, bank cards, credit cards, identification cards and cars. The method makes use of the fact, established by quantum physics, that light particles (photons) can be in multiple locations at the same time. IGS INSTITUTE FOR INNOVATION AND GOVERNANCE STUDIES IGS conducts multi-disciplinary research and offers postgraduate research training in the governance and management of technological and social innovation. The core research foci involve the co-ordination, steering and operation of institutions (and networks of institutions) in both public and private sectors, based on a multi-level, multi-actor perspective. IGS strives to combine scientific excellence with relevance for our stakeholders in the public and private sector. Twitter Data Grant Researchers at the University of Twente have been awarded a Twitter Data Grant, which gives them access to historical data – in the form of tweets – derived from Twitter campaigns designed to raise awareness of various forms of cancer. These include #Mamming (breast cancer), #Movember (mainly prostate cancer), #ChooseSkinHealth (skin cancer) and #HPVReport (cervical cancer). The researchers start by mapping the diffusion process underlying the Twitter campaigns. Social network analysis is aimed at indicating whether and when the campaign leads to discussion among users, promotion (retweets) and reactions (user-tocampaign-managers). The effectiveness of the various campaigns is assessed by comparing online outcomes (for example frequency or sentiment) and offline outcomes (such as donations or screening requests) for a given type of cancer. This makes it possible to determine whether, and above all when, these campaigns are effective in raising awareness and changing behaviour in connection with cancer. MIRA INSTITUTE FOR BIOMEDICAL TECHNOLOGY AND TECHNICAL MEDICINE MIRA is inspired by the increasing role of technology in healthcare. Developing new technology for patients implies a synergetic combination of fundamental and applied research with clinical practice. Examples are rehabilitation research focusing on the interplay of the brain, nerves, muscles and skeleton, advanced imaging technology for better diagnostics and care, and technologies that restore the functioning of diseased organs and damaged tissues. To ensure that patients benefit from our innovations in healthcare, MIRA cooperates closely with academic hospitals and has an active start-up policy. MIRA breakthrough: stable cartilage for joint healing Researchers at the MIRA Institute have managed to grow stable cartilage from stem cells in the laboratory. This cartilage remains cartilage when transplanted into the body. In previous attempts, the cartilage derived from stem cells was converted into bone tissue soon after transplantation. The trick is to grow the cells at a low oxygen concentration. This fundamental research, which is described in an article published by the leading scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), brings us one step closer to the treatment of cartilage diseases such as arthritis. One of the major pillars of the University of Twente is information technology, which is organized into a single research institute, CTIT. The institute is home to some 400 researchers. It is unique across the Netherlands and beyond, notably for its decision to place ICT science in a broad technological and societal context. Multidisciplinary research is key, yet based on the insight that excellence can only be attained by excelling in a specific expertise.

Science for a smart society A large part of CTIT research is dedicated to developing a smarter society – one in which ICT raises the quality of life, yet in a highly nonintrusive manner. We prefer to make our solutions as invisible as possible, but to maximize their effect. That’s why we strive for robots with human skills, for easy wearables that monitor health and well-being, and ICT systems that are as safe, secure, and reliable as anyone would expect them to be. Cyber Security Five new CTIT research projects are to be carried out in the field of cyber security. The projects are the following: Security Requirements for SERIOUS apps; Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition Systems (SCADA); Critical Infrastructure Protection through Cryptographic Incident Management (CRIPTIM); Distributed Denial-of-Service Defence: protecting schools and other public organizations; Learning from Incidents (LINC). The research into cyber security is a part of the Dutch government’s National Cyber Security Strategy (NCSS2, now in its second edition). The call for a long-term Cyber Security research programme also involves a need for multidisciplinary solutions, since cyber security has multidisciplinary dimensions. SYSTEM TO QUICKLY SEARCH FOR SURVIVORS AFTER DISASTERS Researchers of the ITC Faculty are working together with nineteen European partners to develop a system that helps urban search and rescue forces to find victims of disasters such as earthquakes more quickly and efficiently. To achieve this , the research consortium combines data from, for instance, satellites, drones, robots and various sensors. The latter are used to detect mobile phones or people trapped inside a building, while the data collected by drones allows creation of a 3D representation of the disaster site and individual buildings. Goal of the system is to help relief organizations dig as specifically as possible for injured victims, thereby saving lives. The goal of the European project Inachus is to design a system that helps to locate victims at the site of a disaster. Rescue operations can be faster and more efficient this way. Such a system does not exist yet.

Currently, relief organizations use dogs and shovels to search for survivors. They start digging in the right place only if they’re lucky. Within the project ITC focuses on population mapping, to allow better predication where were people were located at a certain time of day and on the 3D analysis of the data gathered with the drones. Twenty European parties from ten different countries, including the Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, Germany and France, are collaborating to develop this system. The project is being coordinated by the Greek Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS). Work on the project started in January 2015 and it will run for four years. STRATEGIC BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT The University of Twente is committed to enhancing its relationship with the business community. In keeping with its enhanced ambitions regarding entrepreneurship, UT has established a special Strategic Business Development unit. As an entrepreneurial university, our fundamental objective is to create value for and have an impact on partners and stakeholders in the Twente region, the Netherlands, Europe, and ultimately society at large. Based on broad areas of technology and general themes such as safety, health, and energy and a strong value proposition in the key technologies – IT, nano- and biotechnology, geo-information science and earth observation – and engineering, in a social context (governance and behaviour), we will sharpen our focus on five key fields of industrial research in 2015-2020: - advanced materials, - advanced manufacturing and mechatronics, - medical technology and devices, - wireless and remote sensing, - safety and security. These five themes transcend the individual institutes and faculties. We would like to collaborate with the corporate sector to develop broader programmes, in which both business and technology are represented, and both education and research. The requirements of the company are key. Where do we see opportunities to, using the knowledge and expertise of the UT, create value for the company? That’s the assignment.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS As an entrepreneurial university, we maintain close contact with our industrial partners, both in the Netherlands and abroad. We aim to valorize the knowledge generated at the University of Twente – that is, to turn it into economically effective business processes. Cottonwood Cottonwood Technology Funds, a top performing investor in technology start-ups in the US, opened its European headquarters in the Twente region in the Netherlands. Cottonwood primarily invests in companies active in photonics, advanced materials, healthcare and clean energy. According to the Dutch founding partners the University of Twente, PPM Oost, Twente Region and Thales, the start of Cottonwood in Twente accelerates Twente’s ambition to become Europe’s leading high-tech region in High Tech Systems and Materials. ALCOA FASTENING SYSTEMS Alcoa Fastening Systems, a division of Alcoa Inc., will collaborate with TPRC’s industrial members and the leading Dutch universities to accelerate scientific and technological developments for new applications of thermoplastic composites in aerospace, automotive and other value chains. Alcoa Fastening Systems (AFS), a leading supplier to aerospace and industrial markets, and the ThermoPlastic composites Research Center (TPRC) in Enschede (The Netherlands) have entered into a long term partnership to share and collaborate in the development of thermoplastic composite technologies

The growing role of composite structures in modern aircraft requires adapted fasteners and in certain cases fasteners that have different functions. AFS believes in R&D to evolve products in harmony with new requirements. In this perspective AFS has joined TPRC and is looking forward to projects and activities to support concepts and design of future solutions. Océ Technologies Researchers from the Physics of Fluids department (of the UT research institute MESA+) have worked together with Océ Technologies to develop a method for the detailed measurements of droplet velocities in inkjets. Océ Technologies is already using this method to design new printer applications. Apollo Tyres Apollo Tyres Ltd. has established its new Global R&D Centre in Twente Science Park. This R&D Centre is responsible for the development and testing of all types of automobile and delivery-van tyres marketed by Apollo Tyres Ltd., including Apollo, Vredestein and Dunlop. The specialist team at the R&D Centre is truly international, coming from different parts of the world.

ENTREPRENEURIAL PARTNER The University of Twente cooperates closely with universities, companies and governmental organizations in its immediate area, elsewhere in the country and throughout the world, with the needs of society constantly in mind. We feel that one of our prime responsibilities is to have a beneficial economic impact on the Twente region. Around 1,000 spin-off companies have been established over the past three decades, many of which are still active partners of the university.

KENNISPARK TWENTE AS A KNOWLEDGE NETWORK AND INNOVATION CAMPUS Twente Science Park was founded by the University of Twente in cooperation with the province of Overijssel, the municipality of Enschede, the Twente region and Saxion University of Applied Sciences. It has been created to transform innovations into tangible economic activity and to boost innovative approaches and the knowledge infrastructure in the Twente region, and provides an environment where knowledge-driven companies can continue to develop their business, and prosper. Twente Science Park gives both young and more seasoned entrepreneurs access to financing, talented staff, business development support programmes, new concepts and accommodation. In addition, the entrepreneurs can make use of the research facilities of the University of Twente. This unique construction allows scientists and entrepreneurs to join forces to bring about innovation. Even the physical surroundings have been adapted to include both physical and virtual meeting places for scientists and entrepreneurs. Twente Science Park was awarded the accolade of Best Business Park in the Netherlands at the end of 2013.

TOP SPIN-OFF COMPANIES COTTONWOOD INVESTS 1.6 MILLION EUROS IN CLEAR FLIGHT SOLUTIONS The Cottonwood Euro Technology Fund, the American-based seed and early-stage fund with its European headquarters in Enschede, is investing 1.6 million euros in Clear Flight Solutions, a robotics drone spin-off company from the University of Twente. This investment will enable Clear Flight Solutions to focus on becoming a worldwide market leader in bird control solutions with their lifelike robotic birds The damage birds inflict at airports worldwide, including both property damage and occasional loss of life, is estimated to amount to billions of dollars annually. Birds also create billions of dollars of damage in agriculture, at waste management sites, oil and gas industrial sites and harbours. The problem is that birds are intelligent and learn how to circumnavigate existing bird control solutions. Clear Flight Solutions builds lifelike robotic birds, ‘robirds’, that mimic the flight of a peregrine falcon (a natural predator for most nuisance birds) so well that birds believe they are their natural enemies. This approach plays on the fear instinct of the birds, which short-circuits the learning process and prevents habituation.

TIDE MICROFLUIDICS MICROBUBBLE GENERATOR A harmless contrast medium full of tiny bubbles of gas allows urologists to pinpoint accurately the site from which biopsies are taken from patients with suspected prostate cancer. Gas bubbles reflect sound waves, which makes them ideal for use in ultrasound scans employed to map perfusion in organs. It is important to make these microbubbles the same size to ensure high-definition scans. Tide Microfluidics, a University of Twente spin-off company, masters the art of producing microbubbles of a uniform size – the technical term is ‘monodisperse’ – as no one else. Microbubbles are also useful in other medical imaging applications or for treating patients. They can for example be magnetized or made fluorescent, or filled with medication or biomarkers. Tide Microfluidics is the winner of several awards: a European Union Horizon2020 SME Instrument phase 1 grant, the Young Technology Award at the American conference on the commercialization of Micro- and Nanotechnology, COMS2014, and the AXON Innovation for Health Award 2015 (Innovation for Health is the premier Dutch healthcare innovation event).

PARTNERSHIPS The University of Twente works closely with universities, knowledge institutions and multinationals from all over the world. We are a member of the 3TU Federation, a strategic partnership of the three leading universities of technology in the Netherlands (Delft University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology, and the University of Twente). Together with ten other young and innovative universities across Europe, the University of Twente is a member of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU). In addition to ECIU, we maintain academic relationships in several target regions around the world. There are strong ties with top European research universities such as Westfälische Wilhelms University Münster (Germany), KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Lund University (Sweden), and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) (Hungary). In Asia, we cooperate with different universities in China, Indonesia and India. Furthermore, we collaborate with different hospitals and leading international companies such as ASML, Boeing, Google, Microsoft, Unilever, Akzo Nobel, Shell, Siemens, BP and Philips.

ALUMNI ACROSS THE WORLD

The University of Twente has signed various Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with universities and institutes outside Europe. Two MOUs signed with top institutes in Brazil, the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA) and the Universidade de São Paulo, represent a new step in cooperation with the best South American universities. A Memorandum of Understanding with Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) provides a framework for collaboration in teaching and joint research. SUTD is one of the first universities in the world to incorporate the art and science of design into a multidisciplinary curriculum. Extensive MOUs with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Madras and the IIT in Karaghpur specify the intended exchange of staff and students, and joint educational programmes. Alumni The University of Twente strives to maintain a strong relationship with its alumni (who currently number more than 40,000) around the world. We consider all our graduates to be ambassadors of the university, and we wish to keep in close contact with them. CAMPUS The campus of the University of Twente is an international hot spot: a meeting place for students, for scientists with a multidisciplinary focus and for companies and governments in their quest for knowledge. The campus buildings are located on an impressive estate, in the municipality of Enschede. The scenery is diverse: meadows, water, landscaped gardens and extensive areas of woodland. Scattered around the campus are state-of- the-art research and educational facilities. But the campus is also a place to live, play sports and relax. In summer, the campus is a popular spot for walks and other forms of leisure. It offers a wide range of facilities, such as student and staff housing, sports rooms and grounds, swimming pools, shops, meditation and prayer facilities, medical care, bars, restaurants and even an open-air theatre. The campus is also a venue for events like ‘Create Tomorrow’, the world’s largest student think tank, CuriousU, a festival-style summer school where

bachelor’s students can attend high tech courses and experience, and the end-point of the ‘Batavierenrace’, the biggest student relay race in the world, covering a distance of 185 km from Radboud University Nijmegen and ending at the University of Twente, where it culminates in the largest student party of Europe. The campus is within cycling distance of the bustling centre of Enschede, which also offers many cultural attractions as well as places of worship. LIVING LAB Utilizing our campus as a ‘living lab’ means that we use it as a test and demonstration facility for the latest technology originating from our university and beyond. One example of this is the development of a smart grid to monitor and regulate the supply of energy. In this way we are not only improving our campus, but we are also assisting our research efforts.
