JORIS LUYENDIJK ON THE BREXIT A marriage falling apart. The English government and the European Union have exhausting negotiations about the Brexit. A tiny majority of the British people voted for the exit out of the EU, but it seems a very difficult operation to separate the two. Well-known journalist drs. Joris Luyendijk who lives in the UK for some years now, will voice his opinion about this divorce and the implications. Luyendijk wrote books about democracy, Islam, bankers and Dutch politicians. Moreover he fully participates in the public debate about the Brexit. Moderator: Joost van den Akker MA is researcher at the UT and an expert in regional politics and European law.

JONG EN BURN-OUT De sluipende ziekte van onze tijd heet burnout. Overwerkt, overspannen, uitgeput, om maar wat andere etiketjes te gebruiken. Ook onder studenten neemt het aantal burn-outs snel toe. Wat zijn de lichamelijke en geestelijke kenmerken van een burn-out? En vooral, wat kun je doen om het te voorkomen? Drs. Nienke Thurlings, sociaal psycholoog, kreeg zelf een burn-out op haar 24e. Ze heeft adviezen voor jong en oud.

SCIENCE CAFÉ ENSCHEDE
FLIGHTSIMULATOR VOOR DE DOKTER Voordat piloten de lucht ingaan, oefenen ze in een flightsimulator. Gelukkig bestaan er ook trainingssimulatoren voor artsen die een complexe ingreep moeten verrichten. Met poppen vol elektronica kunnen levensecht medische situaties nagebootst worden. Iedereen kent wel de reanimatie-pop waarop EHBO-ers oefenen, maar wist je dat er ook zwangere vrouwen van plastic, metaal en silicium bestaan die een bevalling nabootsen? Hoe bouw je een pop die net zo reageert als het menselijk lichaam? Dr.ir. Willem Meurs is verbonden aan de Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiology Group (UT) en een van de uitvinders van de Human Patient Simulator. Dr. Tim Antonius is neonatoloog aan het Radboud UMC te Nijmegen en bouwde zelf een hart-longmachinesimulator. Talkshow host: ir. Peter Timmerman (Studium Generale, UT)

DROMEN ZIJN GEEN BEDROG Een achtervolging in de mist. Je overleden opa die je toelacht. Nachtmerrie of mooi beeld, sturing van dromen lijkt onmogelijk: in je slaap geef je je immers over aan rust en niet-bewustzijn. Als lucide dromer kun je je dromen tijdens de REM-slaap ervaren ĂŠn beĂŻnvloeden. Het schijnt dat je met deze techniek ook alledaagse problemen kunt oplossen en stress kunt verminderen. Tim Post MSc is promovendus bij het onderzoekscentrum Science Education and Talent Development (UT). Hij is nauw betrokken bij internetplatform Snoozon over lucide dromen.

LUDWIG WITTGENSTEIN The Austrian-British philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) was a remarkable thinker and personality. In his earlier days he published the strict and logical Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, in which he claimed to have solved a lot of philosophical problems. After a few years of retreat from philosophy – he worked as a teacher at a primary school in an Austrian village – he wrote his Philosophical Investigations, in which he developed the influential concept of language-games. Dr. Brandt van der Gaast teaches philosophy at the UT and will explain life and thinking of Wittgenstein.

WHO’S AFRAID OF NORTH KOREA? This communist state is one of the most mysterious countries in the world. We all know the marching soldiers who salute Kim Jong-Un and the passionate North Korean newsreaders, but what else do we know? Prof.dr. Remco Breuker – North Korea specialist at Leiden University – gives us new perspectives for a better understanding. Breuker will certainly discuss the nuclear conflict between North Korea and the United States and how this affects the safety in the region.

LEVEN MET EEN BIONISCHE HAND Arie Rommers verloor op jonge leeftijd zijn rechteronderarm door een ongeluk. Er volgde een lang revalidatietraject, waarbij hij diverse protheses gebruikte. Vandaag de dag beschikt hij over een van meeste geavanceerde bionische handen ter wereld, waarmee hij zelfs gitaar kan spelen. Deze hand bestuurt hij met de spieren uit zijn bovenarm. Rommers vertelt hoe deze technologie zijn leven veranderd heeft. Dr. Heidi Muijzer-Witteveen legt uit hoe dit soort protheses werkt; zij promoveerde aan de UT op de tactiele aspecten van een bionische hand.

IK PAS! 30 DAGEN GEEN DRUPPEL Op menig studentenfeest vloeit het bier rijkelijk. Een glas vergroot de gezelligheid en maakt de tongen los. De keerzijde is de kater, maar ook op lange termijn heeft de drank invloed op geheugen en studieprestaties. Om mensen bewust te maken van hun drinkgedrag houdt Stichting Positieve Leefstijl jaarlijks de campagne Ik pas! waarin ze iedereen uitdaagt om 30 dagen geen druppel te drinken. Mr.dr. Rob Bovens is verbonden aan Tranzo, het wetenschappelijk instituut voor zorg en welzijn, Universiteit van Tilburg. Bovens toont dat de campagne Ik pas! effect heeft. Moderator: Dr. Joris van Hoof, promoveerde op alcoholgebruik onder adolescenten: Sweet sixteen and never been drunk?

A WORLD WITHOUT NUCLEAR WEAPONS? What would happen to the city of Rotterdam if a nuclear bomb exploded in the harbour? Wilbert van der Zeijden (Defence & Security specialist at PAX) describes the impact – from first flash to last blast. Susi Snyder (Nuclear Disarmament specialist at PAX and member of ICAN) explains what the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons does to abolish nuclear weapons. She will explain why ICAN received the Nobel Price for Peace 2017.

WAPENS MET EEN EIGEN WIL? Over autonome wapens – in de media ook wel killer-robots genoemd – doen wilde verhalen de ronde. Dit symposium probeert feiten en fabels te scheiden. Zitten militairen te wachten op wapensystemen die autonoom hun gang gaan? Of hebben ze geen keus omdat de vijand het ook doet? Hoe werkt een autonoom wapensysteem, wat is er tegenwoordig mogelijk? En hoe zit het met de ethische bezwaren: is het verantwoord om de mens out-the-loop te halen? Prof.dr. Frans Osinga, commodore van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht en hoogleraar Militair Operationele Wetenschappen aan de Nederlandse Defensie Academie. Ir. Pieter Elands onderzoekt bij TNO onbemande systemen, drones en autonomie. Prof.dr.ir. Peter-Paul Verbeek, hoogleraar Techniekfilosofie (UT), lid van UNESCO Committee on Ethics of Science and Technology.

LIGHTNING-FAST ELECTRIC SUPERBIKE Accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in only 3 seconds? It might be feasible with the Electric Superbike. Fifteen Saxion- and UT-students are designing and building this lightning-fast vehicle, which might even outperform ordinary gasoline motorbikes. What’s involved in the creation of such a race monster? Team manager Tim Veldhuis will lift the veil. Battery expert Tom Kooyman from Prodrive Technologies highlights the heart of this machine: a powerful battery.

PRESTEREN ONDER HOOGSPANNING Of je nu een liefdesaanzoek doet, een moeilijk tentamen voorbereidt, een etappe van de Batavierenrace rent of een solo moet spelen, presteren onder hoogspanning vergt veel van de mens. Hoe werken geest en lichaam op elkaar in? Hoe houd je jezelf gemotiveerd? Kun je concentratie trainen? Dr. Rico Schuijers, sportpsycholoog, is gespecialiseerd in het begeleiden van mensen in stressberoepen, zoals musici en luchtverkeersleiders. Hij traint al jaren met succes nationale topsporters, ondermeer voor de Olympische Spelen.

HIER ZIT EEN LUCHTJE AAN In het Romeinse Colosseum vochten gladiatoren met elkaar of met wilde beesten. Het rook er naar bloed, zweet en angst. Maar er was ook een geur van oranjebloesem die via tuitjes in de stenen door de ruimte stroomde. Dat was de geur die iedereen associeerde met feest. Reuk lijkt een ondergewaardeerd zintuig. Ogen en oren hebben de overhand. Toch zal je nooit verliefd worden op iemand die je niet lekker vindt ruiken. Wat is de rol van geur in verleden en heden? En hoe werkt ruiken in lichaam en geest? Een aromajockey zal geuren door ons Amphitheater laten stromen. Drs. Caro Verbeek promoveert aan de Vrije Universiteit op onderzoek naar verdwenen geuren.

SCIENCE CAFÉ ENSCHEDE
DE KOCK EN DE MOORDDATABASE Kan een misdaadroman een rechercheur helpen bij het oplossen van een moord? Wèl als het aan onderzoekers Peter de Kock en Jaap Knotter ligt. Zij bouwen in samenwerking met de politie een landelijke moorddatabase, waarin informatie over oude moordzaken verzameld wordt. Met die data kunnen patronen worden ontdekt die helpen bij het oplossen van nieuwe moorden en cold cases. De database wordt gebouwd volgens een methodiek die oorspronkelijk ontwikkeld is om terroristische aanslagen te voorspellen. LUNCH LECTURE PHILOSOPHY
JAPANESE PHILOSOPHY Modern philosophy in Japan goes back to the 19th century. However, a variety of relevant philosophical ideas arose long before within various intellectual and spiritual frameworks. This lecture demonstrates the potential inherent in Japanese philosophy by focusing on the idea of “knowing by becoming the thing itself” articulated by Nishida Kitarō (1870-1945). Raquel Bouso Garcia is senior lecturer at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. Her PhD-thesis was about the notion of emptiness in the thought of Nishitani Keiji (1900–1990). Her research interests include intercultural philosophy, East Asian religions and thought, particularly Japanese Zen and Kyoto School.

ONE YEAR AT GOOGLE Technology companies like Google are facing a number of deeply philosophical and social challenges – ranging from disinformation to hate speech. The expertise on these issues lies with academics and researchers, but it remains a problem that much of this expertise fails to have an impact on the technology industry. Johnny Søraker will reflect on what one year at Google has taught him about how his earlier research could have had more impact on the technology industry. Academia and industry can help each other. Dr. Johnny Hartz Søraker left his job as Assistant Professor in the UT Department of Philosophy to continue his career as a Policy Specialist and Senior Strategist for Google Inc.

JAPAN: LAND OF THE RISING SUN Geisha’s and identically dressed businessmen, tea sessions and the newest technology. Japan is the third largest national economy, after the US and China. The population is the healthiest of the world. Still the country remains mysteriously unknown. What is Japan? Hisami Kimura will tell about the history, culture and business norms of Japan. She will illustrate her lecture with fragments of Japanese art and movies. Hisami Kimura MA is Japanese teacher at the University of Amsterdam and tutor at ATLAS. She is specialized in Japanese culture and language.

NUCLEAR FUSION: PUSHING THE BOUNDARY The experimental nuclear fusion reactor ITER will enable the study of fusion plasmas. But first a number of challenges has to be faced: plasmas are intrinsically unstable, and the heat and particle fluxes to the reactor wall are incinerating. Marco de Baar will explain nuclear fusion and how plasma performance and stability can be improved. He will also discuss new solutions for the plasma-wall interaction. Last but not least: what will be the role of nuclear fusion in the energy transition? Prof.dr. Marco de Baar is leader of the nuclear fusion program in NWO institute DIFFER and full professor at the Mechanical Engineering department (TU/e).

ENERGIE, CO2 EN SOLAR FUELS Het kabinet zet in op grootschalige CO2-opslag om de milieudoelstellingen te halen. Maar hoe doe je dat precies: CO2 afvangen en opslaan, bijvoorbeeld in een leeg gasveld? Hans Geerlings vertelt over de ins en outs van deze technologie en plaatst die in de context van het wereldwijde energievraagstuk. Ook zal hij stilstaan bij zogenaamde solar fuels: hierbij wordt CO2 uit de atmosfeer omgezet – met hulp van zonne-energie – in energierijke koolwaterstoffen. Wordt dit de toekomst? Prof.dr. Hans Geerlings is deeltijd hoogleraar Procestechnologie en functionele materialen voor afvang en conversie van CO2 (TU Delft).
