Over 1,000 students from 30 countries attend ELPI each year. It’s a program full of options and opportunities that you can tailor to your interests and needs. In ELPI, you can take general classes for developing communication, or academic classes that focus on speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Program Features • 6 class levels (High Beginner to University Admission Preparation) • Elective classes • Access to the ELC Study Centre and Pronunciation Centre • Access to the Writing Centre and Computer Assisted Language Laboratory (CALL) • Free weekly activities • Pathway to UVic degree programs

Study Centre and Pronunciation Centre • Conversation with teachers and volunteers in a relaxed setting • Drop-in “Active English” classes 4 days per week • Writing Centre for one-on-one academic writing support

Social and Cultural Activities • Coffee socials, sports, movies, festivals, volunteering • Optional activities include: Butchart Gardens, theatre, ski trips, Vancouver trips, kayaking, whale watching (additional fees apply)

Your 12-Week Program Options Upper Beginner and Low-Intermediate levels build fundamental communication skills by focussing on comprehension and speaking confidence. Intermediate and Advanced levels (410 and above) offer students 2 class options: • Academic English: for students who would like to complete a degree at an Englishspeaking university. • General English: for students who would like to explore career, business and personal interests. University Admission Preparation (UAP) UAP is the highest academic level in our 12-week program. This option is perfect for students wishing to meet the English language requirement for UVic. Your UAP classes will focus on: • academic English; • oral presentations; • note-taking; • reading academic texts; • report writing; • research and computer use.

Fast-track your education by combining ESL classes with first-year credit courses! The Pathways program is an excellent option if you wish to obtain an undergraduate degree from UVic, but still need to improve your English skills.

This 4-week academic program is available for students who want to meet the language requirements for UVic.

Advanced English and Canadian Studies • Focus on Academic English and university study skills • introduction to Canadian Culture course (CS101)* • Academic Skills workshops (Study Skills, Note-taking, Plagiarism) • Weekly writing clinics • Teaching Assistants who provide one-to-one help with both courses

Requirements Academic: Students who intend to apply to a UVic degree program must meet UVic’s academic admission requirements. Language: 6.0 IELTS with no section less than 5.5 or 79 iBT with no section less than 17. Successful completion of this program fulfills the English language requirement for entrance to UVic undergraduate degree programs. Students must: • receive a passing grade (80%) for Advanced English; • receive a minimum 60% in Canadian Studies; students may take this course for 1.5 credit units for an additional fee.

Program Application You must: • Be 18 years of age or older by the first day of the program • Meet Canadian visa requirements while they are in Canada • Buy medical insurance for the duration of the program • Have a basic knowledge of English and successfully complete the online test: continuingstudies.uvic.ca/elc/testing.

Fees due upon registration

Immigration and Medical Information Canadian Immigration Laws Once you have completed the application and paid the application fees, you will receive a Letter of Acceptance (LOA). You can use this letter to apply for appropriate visas or permits. It is your responsibility to obtain the correct visa or permit. Depending on your nationality and length of study, you may not require a visa to study in Canada. However, you might still need to purchase an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) BEFORE arriving in Canada. For more information, please visit: www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/index.asp

Medical Insurance It is your responsibility to ensure you have proper medical coverage during your stay in Canada.

$150 Application Fee • If you apply for more than one program at the same time, you pay the $150 application fee once only. $350 Deposit (per program) • This deposit is part of the tuition fee, not an additional cost. $250 Homestay Fee • See the next page for Homestay availability for your program. Full payment is due five weeks before the program start date.

All English Language Centre students must have medical insurance and should confirm that it covers any activities they may participate in (including sports).

Buy private medical insurance before leaving your home country. You can purchase insurance through AON Medical Insurance company at: http://extranet.aon.ca/uvic/inbound.

Forms without your signature will not be processed.

If you plan on staying in Victoria for longer than 6 months, you must apply for British Columbia Medical Services Plan (MSP) upon arrival. There is a three month waiting period for MSP, so you should also buy private medical insurance to cover you for the first 3 months of your stay. www.healthservices.gov.bc.ca/msp
