Students, residents express concerns

Tension remains between student and permanent residents in Burlington, which was a significant issue during this year’s Burlington city council elections, residents say.

Noise is one of the largest sources of conflict between students and permanent residents.

“A lot of times, it’s not party noise but the walk-by noise,” Ward 8 city councilor Adam Roof said. “It’s a really tough problem.”

Junior Jesse Schandler said he and his roommates had friends visiting earlier this semester when they received their first noise complaint from a neighbor.

“At first they didn’t confront us,” Schandler said. “They called our landlord, and our landlord then was in touch with us, and he tried to deal with the problem.”

Schandler said he and his roommates would have preferred if the neighbor had approached them first, instead of going directly to the landlord.

However, Schandler said that the issue was ultimately resolved.

“My roommate went and knocked on their door and spoke to them about what happened, and what we can do in the future to make sure things like that don’t happen again,” Schandler said.

Debra Roseman, a permanent resident, said that during the day she and her neighbors will greet one another and are friendly.

However, when alcohol and a large amount of people get thrown into the equation, her interactions with students have

calating, girls screaming, bottles breaking, music escalating, guys urinating in my driveway and bushes,” Roseman said.

Adam Roof, the City Councilor for Ward 8, said he believes the solution to the problem is to bring balance to the neighborhoods.

He suggested building housing downtown for younger Burlington residents, not just students.

“I’m trying to bring balance to neighborhoods, not just for residents, but really for students as well,” Roof said. “Everyone has a stake in this game.”

There were originally 14

councilors, with two representing each ward.

Now there are 12 councilors, eight of which represent each ward and four represent the north, east, south and west districts.

With the new ward and districts in place, Roof said he plans to work with his fellow councilors to solve the problems

The Prison Project The Prison Project organization was recognized as an official SGA club.

The purpose of the club is to provide inmates of the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility with enjoyable recreational opportunities, such as tutoring and sports.

The Prison Project also works to build relationships between inmates and college students.

Construction begins on new dorms Central Campus will unveil its new dorm building in August 2017, following the demolition of CBW by katherine smith ksmith59@uvm.edu

The future of Central Campus with the Chittenden, Buckham and Wills residence halls torn down will see big changes. Students say they are wary about the changes.

The place where the dorms once stood is now a construction area, and some have questioned when all of the work will finally be finished.

“I thought it was good, I just wondered where everyone would live,” senior Michelle Monette said.

Questions some students have about what the new dorms will look like include, how much space they’ll take up and when they’ll be finished.

“I heard there was going to be a tunnel from the new dorms to the library,” first-year Mackenzie Patton-Donnelly said.

Robert Vaughan, director of Capital Planning and Management at UVM, oversees all projects on campus.

“They’re being built for first-year students, as one of the priorities of the president to bring first-year students to the middle of campus,” Vaughan said.

The new dorms will be larger than the old ones, Vaughan said. The buildings will be nearly seven stories high when completed and each room will be 30 square feet larger.

As part of the new dorms, a dining hall for 450 students will be constructed, according to UVM Facilities Design and Construction’s website.

“There will be food stations set up in the middle of the floor, rather than an all-you-can-eat style,” Vaughan said. “Seating will be situated around these stations, and there will be faculty teaching areas on food prep as well.”

“The first floor of the east wing will also hold a fitness center, Residential Life offices, and seminar rooms,” he said.

In addition, a new bridge will connect the dorm to the area around the main entrance of the library, according to UVM Facilities Design and Construction.

The UVM Animal Rescue Squad was recognized as an official SGA club. The goal of the club is to unite animal activists and lovers across campus, erase the stigma on overlooked animals and to promote advocacy for all animals, according to their mission statement.

The Animal Rescue Squad wants to help create a better environment for animals and educate the community on rescuing and creating an environment better suited for these animals.

Ticket Distribution Change In the past tickets for sporting events have been distributed in the SGA office.

President Jason Maulucci and the Committee on Legislative Action Chairman Lachlan Francis are working to return the distribution of sports tickets to the Davis Center with the hopes of increasing accessibility for students.

Some students are concerned about how the new structures will change the overall look of Central Campus.

“The buildings being tall will break up the look of main campus,” sophomore, Mackenzie Patton-Donnelly said. “I don’t like that.”

Monette pointed out the possible benefits it might add to the first-year experience.

“It sounds cool,” she said.

“It’ll be good for freshman to be in the center of campus for the first year and get familiar with it.”

The dorms are scheduled to be completed in August 2017, Vaughan said.

Living in the dorms: know your rights by michelle phillips mphill15@uvm.edu

Some students say they are confused about their rights in a dorm as opposed to off-campus.

“I don’t even know; they probably can’t search through my stuff but I would assume if they ask me to open a drawer or something, I have to do it,” firstyear Olivia Marelic said.

Even if resident advisers or resident directors believe students are using prohibited objects, students are protected by privacy rights.

Students living on-campus are protected by the fourth amendment from unreasonable search and seizure because UVM is a public institution, said Lucy Singer, a member of UVM’s General Counsel.

No matter the circumstances, RAs cannot enter a dorm room without the resident’s permission, Jeanne Mance RA Katarina Fielding said. However, RDs can come in if there is a suspected emergency.

Also, an open door is not the same as an invitation inside.

However, RAs may ask to enter if illegal substances or harmful behavior is visible when the door is open.

“If I knock on the door and you open it and I see beer, it’s over whether you realized [I was an RA] or not,” Fielding said.

Even if the door is closed, Fielding said RAs reserve the right to call police services if they suspect illegal substances are being used.

When questioned about whether they would open their

door for an RA, first-year Michael Daley said, “They’ll call the police. You’re in trouble no matter what, might as well make it less painful.”

Fielding also said that resident directors have the same privileges as resident advisers.

Resident directors and assistant resident directors can enter and inspect a room or suite upon “reasonable cause,” according to the ResLife Terms and Conditions.

Reasonable causes include the sight or odor of smoke of any kind, the sight of alcohol or illegal substances or a tip from a reliable source that illegal substances or a weapon are in a room, according to ResLife Terms and Conditions.

RDs and assistant RDs are advised not to enter the room without talking to an acting director, but if the situation appears urgent, they may enter immediately.

Anyone entering a room is required to knock, identify themselves and, once inside, state their reason for doing so.

provided an opportunity to voluntarily produce any item or substance for which the entry has been made,” according to

Terms and Conditions.

The inspection will be done to confirm whether or not there are any illegal substances in the room or if there is a risk to the health of the students.

“We can’t open drawers or anything like that, that would be really intrusive,” said senior Bekah Corey, an RA in Harris Millis. “RDs are definitely a step above us, but they’re not the police either.”

ResLife staff are not law-enforcement and the reason for

inspecting rooms is health and safety concerns, Singer said.

If the police have been called, they can enter the room if they have consent of the residents or a warrant, and can seize any illegal substances in plain view, Singer said.

“That’s what’s difficult about the job,” Corey said. “There’s kind of this faux idea of authority but really we [RAs] are kind of on the same level as anyone else, we just offer more guidance.”

No differences between UVM dining, Sodexo by sydney filler sfiller@uvm.edu

Sodexo will be facing big changes in the next five years following feedback from students, staff and faculty.

Many students are unaware there is no difference between UVM dining and Sodexo, they said.

“We are Sodexo, that’s our company,” said Harris Millis manager Susan Cathrall.

“We’re just referred to as UVM dining on campus.”

“This was something that was decided,” Neil Paes, night supervisor at the Marketplace, said. “This has nothing to do with the contract. We don’t want to dilute the brand name of UVM.” “So we work for UVM and UVM wanted us to make a UVM experience. We work for UVM as contractors and we respect and are here to serve the client [UVM],” Paes said.

Sodexo operates unlimited dining locations Cook Commons, Harris Millis and Redstone Dining in addition to retail dining locations all over campus.

UVM also allows local vendors on campus like the Skinny

Pancake, New World Tortilla and Ben and Jerry’s to better serve the student population, although all locations still accept points from the meal plan.

Sodexo provides services to 17 dining locations at UVM.

“

Sodexo recently renewed their contract with UVM and included a 46-page “Request for Proposals” document that integrated feedback from the UVM community on food quality, ethics, sustainability and local food.

UVM has continually worked with Sodexo in order

to fulfill the needs of a local, fair-trade, humane and organic diet. While many college campus food providers have a reputation for supplying unhealthy food, Sodexo has been making strides toward creating a more sustainable diet for students.

Despite the changes Sodexo has made, not all students agree that it’s enough.

“I thought they were going to have more healthy and organic food but it seems like a lot of mass-produced food,” firstyear Aryn Hall said. “When I was taking a tour, they were like ‘oh, we care so much about this’. I do get that they care, but I wish they put more time into it.”

Students, hotel staff staying separate by carolne Alkire calkire@uvm.edu

Students living in the Sheraton hotel say they have a distant relationship with the hotel staff.

The two hallways occupied by students are in a wing away from guests, said Ben Kennedy, lead resident adviser for the Sheraton.

He said there have been no negative interactions between students and hotel staff.

“There has been no disrespect flowing either way. Actually, everyone has been courteous, respectful and kind to each other,” Kennedy said.

With the addition of the Sheraton Hotel as an off-campus housing option for UVM students, the hotel’s staff now has to accommodate 120 college students.

Students freely enter and exit their rooms without having to step foot in the lobby or any area where guests and staff are.

As a result, students have very little contact with Sheraton staff.

“I’ve never actually talked to any of the staff before,” junior Talon Drown said.

“They don’t really acknowledge us. I use the pool and the gym pretty regularly and they kind of just let me do my thing,” he said.

“I haven’t had much interaction with staff at the hotel,” junior Isabella Sances said.

“The only time I interact with them is at the restaurant or at the front desk.”

Interactions with the staff are always polite, she said, but it is possible to tell the coopera-

tion is hesitant.

“They’re nice, however they also seem to put us second to the hotel guests and don’t know any information about the UVM students staying there,” Sances said.

Senior Ben Lobley also lives in the Sheraton and had some complaints about the staff.

“I’ve had some bad experiences in the restaurant with very slow service, but I’m not

sure if it’s directed at the students,” Lobley said.

Lynn Wales, the manager for ResLife at the Sheraton, also said the relationship was friendly.

“As a member of the UVM ResLife staff, I want to clarify that we do in fact have a great working relationship with the Sheraton staff,” Wales said.

“We want students to reach out to us if there are incidents

with Sheraton staff that they have concerns about.”

“It’s been a huge pleasure having the students live here at the Sheraton,” said staff member Danica Kennedy.

“I only really see them when they come to the front desk, but they’ve been great. I was an RA in college, so it’s really nice to see students again, she said.”

UVM assists students dealing with landlords by courtney cunningham cecunnin@uvm.edu

Students dealing with landlord issues can turn to a UVM program.

The Consumer Assistance Program is a joint program between UVM and the Vermont attorney general’s office that can be a resource for students facing landlord problems.

“Because a landlord is a business, we can take a complaint from students on a range of issues, including security deposits,” former deputy attorney general and UVM professor Janet Murnane said.

The two biggest problems that students have reported are failure to return a security deposit or living issues, she said.

Students mostly complain about mold, electrical, water and heating issue, Murnane said.

“Bathrooms that don’t have vents, just creating all kinds of situations, water that’s not really hot, heat that’s not working effectively, she said. “You know everything that can go wrong in an apartment.”

Murnane said she recommends students check the Burlington property database before renting an apartment to see the history of code violations.

Senior Gabriela Kaplan said she moved into 282 Pearl St. this July while the apartment was undergoing roof repairs.

This address is currently under investigation for repair

and replacement of the front porch roof without a zoning permit, according to the Burlington property database.

“They fixed it but they didn’t really fix it very well,” Kaplan said.

“Part of the roof is leaking, it’s a really old house and there is no gutters so there’s a lot of water damage on the walls. They fixed the walls sort of but just painted over it and didn’t put in any gutters. They didn’t fix the roof really, I don’t know what they did honestly, she said.

Landlords must meet specific health and safety building standards under the Vermont Departments of Health and Safety, according to the Vermont rental housing codes.

The Vermont rental agreement statute outlines obligations of landlords that include maintaining properties that are safe, clean and fit for living.

The statute also outlines the specific process of returning security deposits.

The Burlington Housing Board of Review handles com-

plaints about rental units in Burlington.

Senior Alex Ivanciu said she had a meeting with the board of review to dispute deductions made from her security deposit.

“It was pretty easy,” she said.

“We set up an appointment and waited several weeks to get a date.”

Ivanciu said she received most of the money back for the charges she disputed.

“They said there was a fire door in the house when we moved in and that we removed

“We had pictures to prove it and they tried to say we falsified pictures that had iPhone factory timestamp,” Ivanciu said.

Students need to read and understand the law, Murnane said.

“When you rent an apartment, you want to do a walk through and do the checklist to make sure that you note any issues with the apartment that were there,” she said. “So that when you go to move out, you don’t get held responsible.”

Housing issue can be fixed O

f all the issues Burlington faces, students living in historic downtown neighborhoods has to be one of the most persistent. Friction between residents and students has been a problem as long as UVM and Champlain have been around.

Many of the problems are what the city and University call “quality of life” issues — loud parties, trash and constant tenant turnover, just to name a few.

Every year it seems the SGA gets earfuls from angry longtime Burlington residents.

Many of the noise issues in Burlington are concentrated in the student neighborhoods between Main and Pearl streets. Furthermore, nobody except landlords benefit from the inflated prices and minimal maintenance that come with the high-demand market in Burlington, thanks to the yearly influx of students.

If students can find alternatives, pressure on the market will be relieved. Landlords will in turn feel pressure to make cramped — in some cases unsafe — apartments attractive by lowering rent and making them nicer.

Here is a situation where the

city will benefit from someone with a vision for development.

Thankfully, our newly re-elected mayor is a former housing developer. And he has a plan.

In the Housing Action Plan released early this year, the mayor and his administration have proposed a number of common sense yet bold ideas. The Cynic wholeheartedly supports the plan, which centers around the need to house approximately 900 students — about half of all off-campus students, the city estimates. The plan calls for “well-managed student housing.”

Of course the administration would like to see Champlain and UVM make space for these students on campus, but speculation about an off-campus location has been well reported by Seven Days and other outlets.

Whatever the location, the new housing needs to have a few key features if it’s going to be attractive to students looking for the freedom and location that the student neighborhoods offer. Despite their appearance, price and location, the Redstone Lofts are ideal.

t may be unwise, but I occasionally peruse the online pages of Salon.com to discover what is en vogue and what is passé in left-wing politics.

Still at the height of fashion: the malicious accusation that the Republican Party is a boys’ club of racism. What is passé: journalistic integrity.

On Monday, Salon published an article by Scott Kaufman entitled “‘HoodsOff 2015’ in full effect as Anonymous publishes the names of KKK members — including four sitting US senators,” wherein the author reported that, as part of an Anonymous — a loose outfit of “hacktivists” — campaign to out politicians associated with the Ku Klux Klan, several U.S. mayors and Congressmen were found to have been affiliated with the group.

Among those listed, the senators included Thomas Tillis (RNC), John Cornyn (R-TX), Dan Coats (R-IN) and my home senator, Johnny Isakson (R-GA).

It’s certainly a self-serving and comforting thought to many Democrats who would like to picture their ideological opponents as plutocratic villains whose aim is to oppress the poor from Washington by day and, by night, robed terrorists who instill fear in their black, Jewish and Catholic constituents

by roaming the countryside on horseback, probably caroling “I Wish I Was in Dixie” and setting crosses ablaze against the picturesque silhouette of a synagogue.

Alas, it’s not true — you almost had us that time! — and should certainly never have been reported on, least not by USA Today (which did).

In the first place, Anonymous’ Twitter account announced that it didn’t actually release those findings — an unaffiliated “hacker” did, with very little evidence — and, further, it would “NOT recklessly involve

on this project, they would need to find the right location. A new building would need to be closer to Church Street.

idea that anyone — especially semi-reputable journalism outfits, the Huffington Post excluded — would bother disseminating this garbage. Suppose Anonymous did, in fact, release those findings. Would emails mean anything anyone without a partisan chip on his shoulder?

Did anyone aside from various liberal publications and a few floundering rags even entertain the thought that 4 percent of the Senate was affiliated with a group whose membership would exclude one from elected office?

Of course, the larger issue arising from this incident is that Democrats still really believe that the Republican Party is a

bastion of clandestine racism, which uses racially coded words and phrases when crafting policy that is, of course, racist.

Opposition to affirmative action can’t reeeeaaallly be genuine, any more than support for voter ID laws — the absence of which Europeans would find foolish — can be legitimately passed to prevent voter fraud.

It must have a hidden, bigoted agenda.

Neglecting that the Republican Party’s most promising candidate is Ben Carson, and that shortly behind him is Marco Rubio (many UVM students have, interestingly, thrown their collective hats in for a straight, white male for a position of leadership, Sen. Sanders), it stretches the imagination to believe that Democrats deal fairly with Republican talking-points without resorting to ad-hominem attacks, and still press the racial conspiracy narrative.

They probably ought to, though. At some point, the well of political capital to be gained from accusations of racism will run dry when names of Republicans are found to be as connected to hatred as The Incredible Hulk (whose hatred is more indiscriminate).

And those accusations of racism are going to be found just as fictional as the green man himself.

or many new students at UVM, the golden goodness we get to spread on our pancakes in the dining halls is a no brainer. In the land of maple syrup, to be serving up the fake stuff would count as blasphemy, right?

Well it turns out the 100 percent pure Vermont maple syrup standard across campus is actually new this year. Previously, most locations used imitation corn syrup concoctions, as dining services was unable to find a local supplier that could offer a price low enough to avoid raising meal plan costs.

However, last fall a class called Barriers to Local Food took on the noble task of conducting a feasibility study, comparing various potential suppliers.

This is how UVM’s own Proctor Maple Research Center got involved. They were excited by the idea of getting their product into student dining halls, as students already play a critical role in the production of their syrup.

PMRC is also a research based nonprofit, so they can offer their product at more affordable price to UVM dining.

Over the course of the school year, PMRC will supply over 1,000 gallons of organic and local liquid gold to UVM. It is important to recognize what the consequences of a switch like this are. Caylin McKee, UVM dining Services Sustainability Manager reports that UVM dining is spending $16,000 more per year than when they were sourcing predominantly imitation syrup.

So why do they bother?

Part of Sodexo’s Vermont First pledge (announced last fall) is to source products from our state that Vermont is already producing in high volume, like maple and dairy. UVM dining is also trying to prioritize products with preexisting ties to UVM. For example, they already purchase some produce from Catamount Farm and the adjoining UVM Horticulture Farm. This way, students can be involved from planting the seed to cleaning the plate.

Ultimately, the switch to pure maple syrup was put into motion by student research and advocacy, and serves as an important reminder that students have an active role to play in shaping the campus food system. So what’s next?

Filthy apartment happily snatched up Daltrey Burris

e always signed his legal documents by dotting his I’s with hearts. It always made him feel pretty.

Dalton Smith handed the lease back to his landlord, along with the required security deposit. “Don’t worry, you’ll get this money right back at the end of the semester” said the landlord, Bryson Net, reassuringly.

Dalton smiled back at the man and promised he’d take good care of the place. Both knew the other was lying. Dalton had been burned before, not by the grease fire caused by the cheap, electric burner from last year, but from the deposit.

Days of scrubbing and vacuuming had gone by and he still managed to lose almost half of his input last year. They even charged him for the fire pit left by previous tenants which he totally told them about. But he was hopeful this time. “Now don’t forget that with your $2,100 rent, water is included” the philanthropist added.

Months passed and after a period of homelessness due to the incredible foresight of the

Burlington housing committee, Dalton and his housemates ambled over to their new abode.

“It wasn’t so bad that nobody had a house for two weeks in the summer” Dalton exclaimed.

“Loading my entire life in paid-storage and driving eight hours home beats the hell outta’ here.” The group flung open the door to their new palace, smashing the nearest rat nest into the wall. Three paces later they were at the back door, admiring the spider-web like cracks in the glass. And the actual spider webs on their glasses. “Well it’s a lot smaller than last year, but we’re only 10 minutes from campus now,” one roommate triumphantly stated.

As Dalton stepped into the kitchen, he accidentally brushed the nearby wall, causing a cloud of lead paint dust to explode outwards. Luckily for him, there was a notice on the inside of a cabinet that gave safety tips on dealing with that pesky neurotoxin. He’d never felt safer.

As he tried to flush his eyes in the sink, his hands were promptly scalded by boiling blood and chunks of viscera.

“Goddamn!’ he shrieked.” Last year the blood was room temperature!”

to business. He sauntered to his room, which was attached to the bathroom. There wasn’t a separate door or anything, which was going to make those midnight pee dashes that much easier.

As he yanked the pull-chain to turn on the light, it immediately snapped off and fell to the floor. The light fixture followed suit, smashing into his skull violently. “Man, they don’t make iron chandeliers like they used to,” he thought. Dalton washed and dressed his head wound without leaving his room. “What a luxury. This is paying off al-

few weeks ago, a verbose and heavy voice swept over Lafayette. Hearing argumentative intonations in a discussion on Burlington’s “granola” culture, I realized this guy couldn’t be more outspoken.

“This jerk must be kidding me,” my internal monologue stewed. A flurry of obscenities from him drew me to the conclusion that he was a pseudo-intellectual accomplishing nothing but merely distracting me from my work. I wasn’t off: he just so happened to also be “the most dangerous philosopher in the West,” Slavoj Zizek.

As a Marxist, his lecture began, as you might expect, with the assertion that we must rethink our stance of radical, social thought. Zizek then proceeded to contradict himself by exposing the horrors capitalism imposes on humanity (one in particular being the inevitable moral injustices) while still maintaining passiveness to the economic and political system.

His divergences adulterated what could have been an insightful, academic critique of the establishment. Between his misemployment of irony in his description of “capitalism without capitalism” and the “philosophers’ war,” and generally biased empiricisms resulting from

his extremist political stance, Zizek scrutinized multiculturalism and political correctness as intolerable symptoms of our hyper-sensitive social approaches.

In expanding on his opinion of multiculturalism, he ridiculed Gypsies, Muslims and Jews (excluding Christians as he prided himself on being a socalled, “Christian Atheist”).

He went on to argue that political correctness has gone too far, something with which I actually agree At one point he referred to a group of Jewish people as “Those Jews with the stupid hair,” making spirals with his index finger down the front side of his ear. This statement was of course preceded by his anecdotal evidence that he has quite a few Jewish friends. That would be like if someone were to say, “Those weirdos can’t stop moving for their lives. But my best friend has Tourettes.”

As an esteemed philosopher, can he not see the offense in this? Are we supposed to discount his crudity because he’s a popular guy with a lot of knowledge? I was disturbed seeing the delighted facial expressions of my peers as Zizek proclaimed, “I don’t want to know you!” as

he criticized our nation’s multicultural acceptance.

In a whitewashed, East Coast town like Burlington, this horrified me. He went on to argue that political correctness has gone too far, something with which I actually agree.

The argument was reminiscent of an older episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” in which a journalist scrutinized and destroyed the University of New Hampshire’s new list of politically correct terms.

Zizek’s argument took it more lightheartedly, claiming that satire as a desensitization mechanism is more advantageous than this supposed “patronizing attitude.”

We are currently tending toward over-cautiousness to avoid hurting others, and it’s only impeding our ability to genuinely communicate with one another.

However, it should lead to open discussion about other cultures, whereas Zizek only refuses to learn about others’ backgrounds and traditions.

The ideal situation here would be to use humor as a vehicle for these kinds of discussions.

If this witty strategy is fully understood, then we can reach the enlightened mindset which humanity should strive for and Zizek misguidedly tried to promote.

ing mass of a Rat King, and past the photos of his grandmother winning “Miss Teen Blowjob 1963 and 2014” to a sight truly disturbing.

The living room only had one outlet. And it was that shitty two-pronged kind you had drive half an hour to Home Depot to buy the adapters for. The group had a terrible time, but it was still better than living on campus.

Clinton was the real loser of the Republican debate

T

he most recent Republican debate was, by most accounts, a complete disaster. Chaos and disorder reigned, as can be expected from a field of 10 candidates.

However, despite this unruliness, the candidates did not attack each other very much at all, as has become the norm in previous presidential elections.

This seemingly ungainly field of candidates was surprisingly unified against what they see as their common enemies: the mainstream liberal media and the Democratic candidates, namely Hillary Clinton.

Almost every candidate fired shots at the Democratic front-runner. All of them had something to say or a challenge to levy.

One that stuck out to me was by Carly Fiorina. She said that she knows “in your heart of hearts” that Republicans want to see her and Clinton go head to head in a debate and that she would win said debate.

It may just be me, but her comment seemed to have some self-debasing, misogynistic undertones that speak volumes coming from the one female candidate in the Republican field.

When the candidates weren’t giving Clinton the business, they were giving it to the media and even the debate’s moderators. There were several disputes over the facts the

moderators presented, some of which got rather heated.

Trump even went so far as to say that he bullied the network into making the debate only two hours instead of three and a half. When the moderator disagreed with this, Trump scolded him like a dog that hops up on the couch, eliciting a reaction from the crowd similar to when someone got called out into the hall during class back in grade school.

All in all, the Republican debate was uninformative and uneventful. There was no clear winner. Trump had a few bright moments, but he limited his time more in this one to allow the other candidates time to speak.

Carson showed promise with some of his policies he outlined, but came under heavy and unrelenting fire for his flat tax program and had little to back it up. Marco Rubio seemed to shine as well, especially in contrast with Jeb Bush. But, all this aside, no candidate could be clearly called as a winner in this one.

However, it would seem that the Republicans were interested in establishing a loser esult of this debate. That loser was Clinton and the liberal media that they claim is in support of her.

What it’s like to be a resident adviser

Resident Advisers have duties beyond just walk-throughs.

Sophomore Elise Thompson, an RA in University Heights, became an RA in hopes of creating the tight-knit community that she never had in her first year.

“From having that bad experience, I knew that I wanted to be the RA that would build community and create a cohesive floor because I lacked that last year,” she said.

During her time as an RA, Thompson said she has seen vandalism in GreenHouse, a stolen cider press, a stolen

bench, broken doors and vandalized alarm systems, she said.

“GreenHouse, especially, has always had a really great reputation on campus so now to have this vandalism associated with it this year is just really sad,” Thompson said.

One of the duties of an RA is doing hall walk-throughs. These

happen at 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. on weeknights and 7 p.m., 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. on weekends.

RAs also have to sit at the front desk to help residents with anything they need.

A Wednesday evening community walk began Oct. 28 in the lobby of University Heights South with the meeting of two

RAs. In each residence hall at UVM there are between 10 to 17 residential advisers, according to the UVM website.

“The resident adviser position provides residents with peer leadership that allows for the healthy facilitation of community,” according to the website.

A WEDNESDAY night 7 p.m.

Thompson and a fellow RA, senior Laurel Cole met up to start their first walk through.

7:26 p.m.

Thompson responded to a bias incident, defined as any action that is made with bias against a person or group’s sexual orientation, race, religion, socioeconomic status or disability, according to UVM’s website.

In this case, there was an inappropriate drawing on a white board outside a student’s room.

“This would be considered a bias incident because it is an inappropriate drawing and because it could trigger a negative emotional response in an individual who has been sexually assaulted,” Thompson said.

8:03 p.m.

At the front desk for desk duty, Thompson assisted a resident with retrieving her mailbox combination code from the computer database.

8:13 p.m.

A person wearing a full body black suit and mask walked into the lobby of University Heights South.

Thompson stopped the person out of concern. The person said she was on her way to her friend’s room to change out of the suit and that is was a harmless “Halloweek” stunt.

10:55 p.m.

Thompson and Cole began to close the desk for the night and get ready for a community walk.

11:07 p.m.

The RAs smelled marijuana outside of a resident’s room. After knocking and announcing their presence, no one answered the door.

“Sometimes in these instances, when the police are called, they do not consider marijuana odor to be an urgent concern,” Thompson said.

The police were not called.

11:21 p.m.

Boxes of beer were found in the trash and recycling room. The RAs recorded the number of boxes and types of beer to put into their logs for later in the night.

Thompson said these incidents are recorded so alcohol-use patterns are noticed on certain floors and RAs can discuss alcohol safety and usage with their floors.

11:26 p.m.

The RAs knocked on a resident’s door whose room smelled as if there were candles or incense burning.

Thompson and Cole reminded the resident that other residents on the floor may have asthma or other respiratory issues, so in the future not to spray things.

Overall, this was a fairly tame night for Thompson and Cole, they said.

Campus housing for international students

Some international students are rethinking the benefits of their required housing situation.

First-years Haoxiang Huang and Zhuonan Kong and sophomores Chen Ling and Chen Yang are all international students from China.

They are all residents of Marsh-Austin-Tupper, the required housing location for international students.

Yang, who lived in MAT last year, thinks too many international students live in the dorm and this makes it difficult to create domestic relationships.

“I think my roommate should be an international student like me, but for the whole community of people who live near me, I hope it will be American or other international students from other countries, so I can have

more opportunity to interact with them,” she said. “Almost all American students I meet are very friendly, and very nice.

They will introduce other friends they have to us.”

When she lived in MAT, Yang said the kitchen was always ‘nasty’ and students thought Chinese residents were making the mess.

“They put a sign up with both English and Chinese saying that we had to clean it up,” she said.

Some students like Huang said they wish they could live in MAT for all four years.

Huang said relationships are more important than where he lives and the Global Gateway Program housing isn’t a problem.

But others like Kong can’t wait to get out.

Kong said he thinks the Global Gateway Program should provide more social opportunity.

“I think I have different values than some of them,” Kong said. “My neighbors always have parties and it annoys me a lot. I think the Global Gateway Program should have more activities, bring in another method of introduction to interest international students.”

Even so, having lived in MAT, these four students now like the Residence Hall.

“Our RA is pretty enthusiastic and sometimes we do a lot of

activities as a floor like having pizza catered and watching movies,” Kong said.

Yang said in China, college students often share rooms with six or eight people so she enjoys having more personal space here.

“In China, after midnight you have to turn off your room light or else the school will cut your electricity, so I really like it here, it’s free,” she said.

The Global Gateway Program is a “dedicated facility for international students on the University campus,” that offers services to help students adjust to U.S. school life, according to the program’s website.

International students can live in Harris Millis or the Living/Learning Complex their first semester of sophomore year and can only spend a maximum of one year in all residence halls, Yang said.

Study abroad: housing in England versus in America HUnter Colvin

One of my biggest concerns about coming to Newcastle, England was housing.

It’s only three months, but three months can feel like three years if you have the wrong roommate.

Plus, living in University Heights for the past two years has left me kind of spoiled.

No other dorms on campus are that nice. Heck, half the apartments I’ve been to aren’t that nice.

So what was my living situation going to be like in another country?

Would they be shoebox (R.I.P.) tiny? Or would they be

set up like Harris Millis, where even after orientation and two years I still can’t get to my friends’ rooms without a GPS? Here in Newcastle there are three types of accommodation.

Standard are typical rooms equipped with a bed, desk and wardrobe.

Then there are washbasin facilities, which is a standard room with a sink.

Then there is the Holy Grail, an en suite room. In en suite rooms, you have your own private shower, toilet and sink.

All of the types of rooms are flat-style, which means that there is a shared kitchen/living room area for all the people in the flat, regardless of what specific type of room you have.

Also, no one has a roommate.

The concept of roommates is so foreign to my British flatmates

that when I tried to explain it to them they were completely baffled.

I have a shared living space where I can hang out with my flatmates and cook my meals but have my own private room, where I don’t have to worry about anyone using my bathroom or wonder whose hair is clinging to the shower wall.

The one thing that isn’t ideal is my location.

Being four metro stops away from campus means my building is basically the Trinity Campus of Newcastle.

Although according to my sister, Trinity isn’t a terrible place to live.

Living on-campus, not in dorms

For upperclassmen that don’t want to live downtown but still want an off-campus feel, there are two options: the Redstone Apartments and the Redstone Lofts.

The Redstone Apartments are located behind the Wing Davis Wilks residence complex, between Redstone Campus and the Burlington Country Club along South Prospect Street.

They have one and two-floor apartments, with one to four bedrooms, according to the Redstone Apartments website.

Junior Michaela Paul said she chose to live in the apartments because of where it was located on campus.

“The apartments are a convenient location since it’s on campus, which is great for going to classes, while also being conveniently close to downtown,” Paul said.

It takes about 25 minutes to walk to Church Street from the Redstone Apartments, according to Google Maps.

“It is also fully furnished, which makes everything easier for out-of-state students,” Paul said.

The Lofts are located near the gym and behind Coolidge Hall and the Mason Simpson Hamilton residence complex.

Junior Abby Holmquist said she lives in the lofts because of the location.

“I live in the lofts because it is close to everything and convenient for me since I do not and

Holmquist said she also wanted to have a dishwasher and laundry machines in her apartment, which the Redstone Apartments do not offer.

The Redstone Lofts have laundry machines in every apartment, and the few that don’t offer free use of the laundry machines in the common area.

The Redstone Apartments have laundry machines for all their residents to use near the mailboxes, but it costs $1.75 in

quarters for each load.

“I also really wanted air conditioning after living in the dorms for two years,” Holmquist said.

While the Apartments offer heating, they do not offer air conditioning like the Lofts do.

“Basically I thought the benefits outweighed the costs,” Holmquist said.

With either location, the only thing a student pays for besides rent is electricity, according to both websites.

Heating is included in the rent.

This November, UVM students can grow out their mustaches and beards for a cause.

Movember, a nonprofit foundation that started in Australia, works to raise funds for men’s health, with all proceeds raised going toward prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health research, according to the organizations website.

Every November, Movember holds a fundraiser where men grow out their facial hair for 30 days while raising money and awareness for men’s health.

Junior and philanthropy chair of Sigma Phi Fraternity Derek MacDonald has participated in Movember’s fundraiser for the last four years, he said.

This year, MacDonald hopes to extend the fundraiser outside of Greek life and get as many UVM students involved as possible.

“Participants can create an online profile on the Movember website either solo or with a team, and then others can donate money through your profile which will go toward the causes [Movember is fundraising for],” he said.

MacDonald is currently re-

cruiting students from a variety of other sports and clubs, including the outing club, ski and snowboard club, men’s club lacacrosse, and men’s club soccer, as well as other fraternities and sororities. Anyone is able to participate.

The experience of living in the dorms

Undergraduates are required to live on campus for their first two years, but this requirement seems to have a mixed reaction from students.

Both upperclassmen and underclassmen shared pros and cons regarding life in residence halls.

“Living on campus is great because of how close I am to everything,” first-year Grace Cherouny said.

“A con would be how I don’t really have any alone time so I feel like I am always having to be at my happiest and best around other people,” Cherouny said.

Sophomore Kira Wollensak, a resident of Wing Hall on Redstone Campus, said she spent her first year at UVM in the “Back Five” dorms on Trinity Campus.

“There [weren’t] a lot of people in the Back Five,” Wollensak said.

Now that Wollensak lives in Wing Hall on Redstone, she said she is warming up to dorm life.

“I definitely like [Wing Hall] a lot more than the Back Five on Trinity,” she said.

Wollensak also said there are academic benefits to living in residence halls.

“You’re surrounded by people who are approximately the same age as you and approximately in the same classes as you,” she said. “If you have issues you can go talk to someone

Kari Chapman, a junior who lives off-campus, offered a dif-

ferent perspective.

Chapman said she had experience with four different residence halls in her first four se-

mesters at UVM. “I lived in Millis, Chittenden, Davis and L/L,” she said. “It was cool having the common space [in the L/L suites].”

But Chapman said living in close quarters resulted in “drama and cattiness” between roommates.

Chapman said she now enjoys living with four of her best friends in a house close to campus.

“We all have our own rooms,”

she said.

Chapman said she appreciates this and recognizes this as a luxury not all students can have.

Residence halls seem to pose benefits and drawbacks for UVM students, but proximity to classes seems to remain an important factor for those both on and off campus according to Chapman and Wollensak.

“I definitely, whole-heartedly prefer [living] off campus,” Chapman said.

s a junior, I’m still exploring UVM’s on-campus dining options. There are some locations that are well known and some that are hidden gems.

Classy Dining One little, lesser-known place is the Waterman Manor.

Located on the top floor of Waterman, this fancy location is only open for three hours a day but offers fantastic views of Lake Champlain.

While the prices are on the higher side and options are limited, the food is excellent and you can use points to pay.

If You’re Off Points and On a Budget My favorite place to grab food is the Harvest Market Cafe in the hospital.

It can be a little hard to find, but the cafe delivers delicious food at astounding prices.

With hours from 5 a.m. to 3 a.m., you can grab a bite to eat around the clock including soups, chilis, salads and various nightly specials.

ed online so you can check out what’s there before you head over.

My favorite is the sautéed chicken with curry rice and vegetables, all of which costs less than $5.

Another good option if you’re off points is the food trucks that park on University Place.

One of my favorites is Lucky Chinese food, which offers large portions of Chinese classics for low prices.

Pam’s Deli also has quite a following, offering deli sandwiches with lots of friendliness.

If You’re On Points For those on points, there is a slew of new options with the updates to UVM dining.

Skinny Pancake is an obvious standout, as well as my favorite.

The food is just as good as the popular downtown restaurant and with a carry out option, it’s the perfect stop between classes.

It also offers the best eating atmosphere at UVM. Good food is everywhere on campus, it just takes a little exploring to find your next favorite place to chow down.

Officials reject housing in South End City council heard concerns from public and held off on new housing in the South End

The construction of new housing in the South End has been denied due to a resolution the Burlington City Council passed Oct. 26.

The new housing was going to go into the Enterprise Zone, a small portion of the South End that currently doesn’t allow new housing to be built.

The zone is currently classified as an industrial zone, and does not permit housing to be built there, according to the website.

The decision to hold off on permitting housing in this zone was made because many people have expressed concerns about the new housing.

City council members also felt this distracted the city from planBTV South End, a development proposal which includes the entire South End and not just the Enterprise Zone.

The Enterprise Zone is home to many artists’ studios and local businesses, including Arts Riot and Citizen Cider, according to the South End Alliance website.

Sharon Webster, a local artist who has rented a studio in the South End for the past 30 years, has been following the politics of possible new housing.

“I’ve enjoyed reasonable, affordable rent and I was fearful that if the housing came in then

the zoning laws would change all that,” Webster said.

Mayor Miro Weinberger said in an Oct. 30 statement that he supports the Oct. 26 resolution passed by the city council.

The zone is marked as industrial and doesn’t permit housing, and this has allowed the arts and “entrepreneurial spirit” of the area to flourish over the past two decades, Weinberger said.

This was possible because it was cheap to rent out a studio in the South End, Webster said.

“That’s the reality,” Webster said. “That’s what drew us all there.”

Joan Shannon, a city councilor representing the South District, was one of the sponsors of the resolution.

“By taking it out, it’s not saying people don’t want housing in the Enterprise Zone,” she said.

“Some people do, some people don’t. It’s just very controversial and it’s hard to look at the other pieces when you have this really controversial piece that’s taking everybody’s attention.”

Diane Gayer, director of the Vermont Design Institute, said the fact that housing has been taken out of the plan, as far as the city council is concerned, is important but it’s not the end of the possible development.

“I went to a planning commission meeting the following night and I know the planning commission still held a discus-

sion about housing because they sort of wanted to wrap their heads around it,” Gayer said.

“The planning commission acts independently from the city council.”

Gayer said a few of the commission members understood there’s an important role for the city to play in keeping the Enterprise Zone an innovation center for Burlington.

Shannon said what was being proposed in the Enterprise Zone was really housing for artists as a way to support some the fees in the Enterprise Zone but it was the artists who objected to it.

“So why really push on this piece when the people that it is intended to serve are the people that are objecting to it?” Shannon said.

When this plan was first proposed, the art community reached out by talking to indus-

try in the Enterprise Zone, Gayer said.

Gayer said the city didn’t listen when people started speaking in opposition to the plan.

“Part of why it became as visible and dynamic as it did is because the city didn’t want to give us voices,” Gayer said.

As a social worker, Webster does think that housing needs to be addressed, she said.

However, the Enterprise Zone is so small that excluding the housing from the five or six streets, which make up the district won’t limit anyone’s housing opportunities, she said.

“My feelings are that it is equally important to have housing in our community, but just not there,” Webster said. “For me, I haven’t heard as many artists recognize that people do need a place to live so I want to make a point.”

There’s a place at UVM where everyone from bakers to painters can gather to learn and grow as artists.

The Arts Initiative, a Living/ Learning program, connects students directly to their art, other art forms and other artists on campus.

The Arts Initiative is entering its fifth year has expanded since its foundation. “[The programs are] student-designed,” said Ann Bartlow, the director of the Arts Initiative. “They come up with the direction they want to go in and then are presented to a committee.”

Examples of current houses within the Arts Initiative include Cakes With a Cause, the Dead Poets Society and Japanese Visual Culture.

“The other program that kind of falls into the Arts Initiative is the Integrated Fine Arts, which is a first-year experience program,” Bartlow said. “They are also part of [the Arts Initia-

tive].”

The Integrated Fine Arts program is a Teacher Advisory Program that requires students to take courses specific to their program.

The program is dedicated to creating leaders in artistic fields, according the Integrated Fine Arts website.

Students enrolled in these programs live together in suites.

This environment encourages them to expand their creative horizons.

“It’s cool how each person thrives in their different area,” said Katherine Reid, a first-year studio art major.

The Arts Initiative creates an environment where students are encouraged to learn and collaborate.

“We were all asking each other: What can we do to these pieces to do well?” Reid said about the midterm portfolio submission process. “The responses that everybody was giving each other, we all realized we learned much more than we thought we did.”

“We have a green music class, which is about music and nature and how they relate to each other,” Reid said. “All the people who jive with the music thing really love that class, and next semester we’re having a creative writing class, which a

lot of the English majors and the creative writing majors are really excited for.”

This community of artists is also diverse.

“All of our artist backgrounds, the music one person likes is different from the other, and we all kind of mix together,” Reid said.

If you want to see the Arts

Initiative in action, they are currently preparing for their Open Suite Night, which will take place Thursday, Nov 12.

There is also a Visiting Artist Series, where different artists come to UVM to discuss art. It is open to the public at 5:30 p.m. every Thursday in 216 Living/ Learning Commons.

Noise ordinance inhibits Burlington bands

What most bands have in common is that they get their start from hours of practicing in basements or garages, making noise — finding their beats.

Senior Zach Santarsiero, drummer for local band Doctor Rick, has been playing in the Burlington area since his sophomore year. They have performed at campus events, parties, bars and other venues.

“Due to noise ordinances we have been stopped during practice by the police at least three times,” Santarsiero said. “Once it was 9:30, and we knew the ordinance was at 10 and a cop came and knocked on our door to let us know there was a half hour until we needed to stop playing.”

Playing a musical instrument between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. is prohibited if it is audible through walls or if it disturbs the peace, according to Burlington’s Noise Control Ordinance.

The ordinance has interfered with their success. As students, finding time to practice is hard, Santarsiero said.

“We all have such schedules that we’re starting practice around 8:30, we would love to play all night. Personally, I al-

ways wish I could go down and play drums at 11 o’clock at night, because that’s the only time I have,” Santarsiero said. “I have class and work all day, and I have to somehow find time. I’d rather be playing down there late after a couple beers, but you just can’t.”

It’s more of an annoyance when they are stopped while playing at a party, Santarsiero said.

“We were playing on Isham Street last year, and we played three songs and then the cops showed up,” Santarsiero said.

“We set up for hours, which sucked.”

“Where it all started was on Main Street, right down there with Nectars — you can be so loud,” Santarsiero said. “We had a couple parties there and the cops never came. Hundreds of people came and we played till like 2:30 in the morning.”

Their band gained exposure from playing in bars and venues. Santarsiero said that there are pros and cons to playing

both.

“The pros of playing at a house party is that it doesn’t matter if you’re underage, it doesn’t matter if you’re smoking, it doesn’t matter about anything,” Santarsiero said. “You can just go wild and having a crazy time. There are no rules, besides the fact that the cops might show up.”

Santarsiero made a distinction between these advantages

with the benefits of playing at a professional venue.

“The cool thing about playing at bars is that it’s much more professional, you automatically sound better. You get a different crowd, Nectars brings a lot of people who go there and don’t really know what to expect,” Santarsiero said. “I love playing downtown, they give you beer and [you] get payed to play.”

Band tours for their new album

A psychedelic techno group will be returning to Higher Ground Nov. 15.

Papadosio is touring for their new album, “Extras in A Movie,” released earlier this year with a very orchestral and cerebral yet jammy vibe.

The upcoming show will showcase a lot of new material, drummer Mike Healy said.

Through their current tour they have created a set up resembling a large psychedelic movie theatre space, band member Anthony Thogmartin said.

“It’s cool because this time we decided to have rehearsals that didn’t just consist of us playing our instruments but the last rehearsals we had before we left for the tour we really tried to synchronize and organize what was happening in the visual realm,” Thogmartin said.

“We have been really going hard on the improv game every night,” Healy said in regard to the music being performed each night.

The band is confident the show will be a spectacle. They said their sound and visuals are on point, and that this might be “the most unified show,” they’ve done yet.

“I’m not familiar with the new album, so I’m always ex-

cited to see the old stuff that I started liking them for,” sophomore Alex Rose said. “I’m excited to see how their music is changing and how their newest album is different from their past albums.”

Rose said she has been to a number of Papadosio shows in the past.

“I like how they would incorporate a lot of social messages in their music, so I liked how the crowd is more conscious of what’s going on around them, not only at the concert but at the world around us,” Rose said. “I like how Papadosio uses their music to bring awareness to certain topics.”

Sophomore Julie Stasiuk has been listening to Papadosio for a number of years.

“I like how they have a clean sound, and they’re funky and you can dance to it,” Stasiuk said. “It makes me feel happy and euphoric and I like to listen to it.”

f there’s one thing you don’t expect to hear a rapper shout out to on stage, it’s light fixtures.

However at the Lamp Shop, hip-hop artist Rory Ferreira, also known as Milo, seemed to be obligated to recognize how the venue was filled with lamps.

“Shout out to the lamps,” Ferreira said.

Ferreira struck a chord with the underground hip-hop music scene with his 2011 mixtape “I Wish My Brother Rob Was Here,” distinguishing himself with a quiet, messy rap flow which worked in favor of his reliance on lots of syllable-heavy non sequiturs and one-liners.

However over the years he has refined his sloppy whisper strategy, as best shown on “So The Flies Don’t Come.” He clearly now prefers pumping his chest out and not being afraid to take charge of the show.

The mood was incredibly intimate, as all of the lamps surrounding the audience made the show feel like it was taking place in Ferreira’s grandmother’s basement.

Dancing like he was straight out of Drake’s “Hotline Bling” video, Ferreira jammed through track after track from his new LP. He rarely even looked out at

the audience.

A highlight came with a new track, “An Encyclopedia,” which received immediate applause.

“I love this song! Oh my god!” one girl shouted.

Milo performed his songs differently from the recorded versions.

Using reverb and delay effects, Ferreira would turn his voice from clear emcee to a shaking, cavernous shout. The improvisational tone was similar to the performance styles of other left-field rappers, like El-P and Shabazz Palaces.

The show didn’t go off without a hitch however. This was the first show ever hosted at the venue by Signal Kitchen, who appeared to have issues with sound and keeping the show on schedule.

There was not much room for the audience to stand, without being in the way of Lamp Shop staff or the sound-guys.

There may be some work left to do in terms of making the space work for standing-room concerts.

Artists consider studio space options

Local studio spaces around Burlington have much to offer students and creatives alike.

The Generator, located at 250 Main St., is made up of artist studios, a classroom and a business incubator focused on making things.

Lars Hasselblad Torres, the executive director of The Generator, said what distinguishes them from other studio spaces is the abundance of resources and classes they offer.

“It’s really about the tools and technology that people need to create,” Torres said.

The Generator offers resources for metal work, woodwork and microelectronics.

“Fairly recent college grads to independent creatives and artists who come in after their day jobs, retirees, to hobbyists on the weekends,” Torres said.

“I would say students comprise about a third of our memberships on a day-to-day basis.”

They aim to provide common areas where artists “can share and collaborate,” he said.

For art students like sophomore Emma Leach, studio spaces can aid daily course work.

“I think that they are a real essential part for art making because they provide a quiet place full of resources where you can get your projects done,” Leach said.

Studio memberships, which

provide a personal studio and access to materials, cost $190 a month.

A general membership — costing $65 a month — provides access to storage, the workshop spaces and equipment.

The Generator also offers an exchange program for UVM and Champlain College students to gain free access to the spaces and materials.

An up-and-coming electronic artist will return to Burlington for his first headlining tour.

Kill Paris, aka Corey Baker, will perform at Higher Ground Nov. 20.

Kill Paris is debuting his new album, “Galaxies Between Us” this tour.

Though he began playing guitar at the age of 15, Baker has since branched out into the electronic scene. He released his first few tracks on SoundCloud in 2012.

“Honestly, I started making music to get chicks,” Baker said.

“Now, it’s a way for me to make a living off of what I love to do.”

Although challenging, his headline tour has been a great experience thus far, Baker said.

“It’s been a lot of responsibility for me and my team, but we’re having a blast with it” he said. “It’s very rewarding to pull off a good show.”

After playing at Higher Ground last spring, Baker said he is excited to return.

“Burlington was one of my favorite shows last year,” he said. “I love the energy of the crowd. There’s not much to do though, besides the lake.”

Familiar with many instruments, Kill Paris plays around

with all different kinds of funky sounds.

His sound ranges from lowkey electronic to head bashing dubstep.

The chief creative officer of the Karma Bird House, Michael Jager, said there are multiple benefits to renting one such space as opposed to a studio.

“The space is designed to balance individual, group focus and open space intersection areas where the culture can connect and collaborate,” Jager said.

“Overall, approximately 50 spaces, with a lot of very open, cool, common areas.”

Rent varies from an entry of $300-500 and up to thousands of dollars depending on scope and scale of the studio you choose.

“None of our culture is typical. Our culture is an entrepreneurial creative one

that includes creatives, writers, designers, programmers, film-makers, non-profit causes, tattoo artists, physical therapists, consumer product creators, makers,” Jager said. “It’s called Karma Bird House for just this beautiful reason. It’s unique, it’s not for everyone.”

Audience ruins another hip-hop show Raf Santos

ne thing that I have learned from attending a multitude of concerts is that a crowd can make or break the experience.

I’ve never seen such a pathetic excuse for a crowd, than the crowd I saw at The Underachievers concert this past Friday.

It was so awful that the duo called the crowd out several times during their performance.

It probably didn’t help that the audience was filled with underaged kids overwhelmingly messed up off whatever drugs they consumed.

I felt like I was at a music festival looking into some of these kids’ faces.

One kid’s pupils were so dilated that they were the size of half-dollars.

This concert took place at Higher Ground’s main stage, but the venue was barely full when I arrived.

I was surprised because I have seen The Underachievers multiple times and they usually sell out their shows or at least draw a large crowd.

They had also just released a new album so I figured that

would help in pumping the hype into this concert.

One thing that I have always hated about rap concerts is that the DJ typically plays the rapper’s song for the artist to rap along to.

It’s technically not lip syncing but it’s so damn close that at times that you are left wondering if they are really performing

Not all rappers do this, but for the ones that do, it almost seems like cheating the audience out of an authentic experience.

There were times when I felt the duo seemed remarkably unenthusiastic on stage, but I don’t blame them.

They repeatedly told the crowd to bounce and people just stood still.

They told the crowd to put their hands in the air and only half would do so.

By the end of the concert they tried to get the audience yelling but it was so weak that I even felt embarrassed being a

part of this crowd.

The duo performed their last song and literally bolted off stage.

I stayed around to see if there would be an encore but there was none. Who could blame them though?

If the audience had a bit more energy and were more focused on the music than on what drugs they wanted to do,

then the show would have been all the better.

A shitty crowd will only get a shitty show.

Southern group tours to Burly

Psychedelic country band Futurebirds will be bringing their Southern-infused sound up north to Higher Ground Thursday, Nov. 5.

The group, based in Athens, Georgia, is characterized by their spacey twang.

“We strive to always bring energy into everything we do onstage,” guitarist Carter King said.

Since it is impossible to perfectly replicate their newest release, “Hotel Parties,” while playing it live, Futurebirds likes to add new elements to their music during concerts.

King refers to this as the live versions of songs “having their own voice.”

“We have three lead singers and a few guys in the band who write songs,” King said. “We share responsibilities on the

microphone which is nice but tough because we want to sound like one band and not three separate voices.”

With multiple men sharing a microphone, finding a consistent, unifying sound is challenging, King said.

However, this technique allows the band to find a common voice while providing variety.

The tour is an exciting step for Futurebirds, who is looking forward to playing a new set.

“Hotel Parties” has a different vibe than their previous release, the ethereal “Baba Yaga.”

“Hotel Parties” is a more blunt and to-the-point collection of lyrics than on previous releases.

Therefore, the album is sonically more succinct than “Baba Yaga” but still has a somewhat eccentric sound.

Futurebirds has played in Burlington before, but this will be their first time at Higher Ground.

“We’ve heard great things about the venue,” King said.

“We want to take a day or two off around the time of the show so we can spend time in town.”

Futurebirds’ manager is from Burlington and they are friends with famous musician and Vermonter, Grace Potter.

In the summer of 2011, Futurebirds toured with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals on the Bonnaroo Buzz Tour, and performed at the Bonnaroo music festival along the way.

First-year Samantha Spencer said she is intrigued by the idea of Southern rock at Higher Ground.

Fellow first-year Jess Giordano likes Futurebirds’ sound and thinks the show seems like an interesting experience.

“I’m not a big fan of country music, but this is a little different and I like it,” Giordano said.

“Listening to them feels like laying in a sunny meadow while eating messy barbeque wings.”

In “Bridge of Spies,” James Donovan (Hanks) is an insurance lawyer asked to defend captured Soviet spy Rudoph Abel.

Despite the clamoring of the entire United States to see him sentenced to death in a kangaroo court, Donovan is determined to give Abel a fair trial. Devoted to the Constitution, Donovan wants the U.S. to maintain moral superiority in the Cold War by adherence to rule of law. Through his efforts, Donovan saves Abel from the electric chair, although the spy is still sentenced to 30 years in federal prison.

Soon afterward, American spy plane pilot Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell) is shot down in the Soviet Union and is convicted of espionage by the Russians.

As a result of his relationship with Abel, Donovan is contacted by the CIA to help broker a prisoner swap with the Soviets.

When Donovan travels to East Berlin to negotiate the trade, he finds himself thrust deeper into the conflict. The unassuming insurance lawyer

finds himself in a cloak and dagger world where people are used as pawns in the global game of espionage.

Expertly crafted suspense, excellent pacing and familiar spy-genre motifs distract from the two and a half hour runtime.

Meanwhile, social commentary on mob mentality, jingoism and the effects of propaganda encourage the audience to reflect on what they’ve seen long after the movie ends.

The broad scope of the movie requires that huge swathes of time be glossed over and the time frame of the events are not very clear. Similarly, the historical authenticity is dubious, as is the case with most historical dramas.

“Bridge of Spies” does a surprisingly good job of avoiding classic spy movie blunders.

Rather than portray a black and white picture of morality with the U.S. saving the world from the sinister USSR, the audience is faced with governments that conduct themselves in cold and impersonal ways.

Teammates adapt to UVM’s style

Hockey players at UVM usually have an easier time transitioning to life away from home than the average student — they are used to it.

Nearly all Division I college hockey players are recruited from either preparatory schools or junior teams.

Every player on the men’s hockey team this year played in a junior league prior to coming to Burlington, and many played on preparatory school teams before that.

First-year defenseman Mike Lee lives in Patterson Hall with fellow first-year forward Craig Puffer. Both are originally from Connecticut.

“When I showed up I wasn’t worried about being homesick,” Lee said.

The men’s hockey program had an early off-season program this year that gave Lee a chance to get to know his roommate, which he said helped the transition.

First-year goaltender Patrick Munson is from Minnesota, but spent his junior career playing in Fairbanks, Alaska.

He, like many junior players, was taken in by a billet family, a family that is paid to house a player, usually by the team or league.

Usually this process is arranged by coaches and other staff.

“It was a great life experience and I really loved it,” Munson said. Munson now lives on campus with first-year defenseman Jake Kearley.

As for dorm life, Munson said, “It’s fine, it’s something you’ve got to do.” He did miss

However, the young players need to watch out for “a shoe check.” Lee explained it’s a team tradition that “when the team is out to dinner and a teammate puts some ketchup on your shoe without you noticing then you have to get up and sing in front of the whole restaurant.”

Men’s hockey earns win and tie from series

Men’s hockey opened their conference play with two games against Hockey East rival Northeastern University Oct. 29 and 31.

Game one of the weekend saw the Cats get out to an early two goal lead thanks to sophomores Jarrid Privitera and Anthony Petruzzelli who both scored in the first period.

The Huskies were eventually able to rebound and scored two goals in the third period to tie it up.

The Catamounts regained the lead after senior Dan Senkbeil’s first goal of the season with less than eight minutes to go in the third period.

Junior goalie Mike Santaguida earned the victory, stopping 21 of 23 shots, while picking up his second victory of the season as well as his 50th college game.

“We weathered the storm and got better as the game went on but we found a way to give up a

two-goal lead. We said we’ve got to find a way to win as a team and they did it,” head coach Kevin Sneddon said, according to UVM athletics.

Game two of the weekend saw Jarrid Privitera score his second goal of the weekend by hitting the puck past the goalie right in front of the net less than a minute into the first, giving the Cats the early lead.

Northeastern would bounce back, though, as Nolan Stevens scored on Santaguida less than 10 minutes later on a power play.

Early in the second, junior Brady Shaw would score his first goal of the year with a low wrist shot.

The score remained 2-1 until the third period when the Huskies struck.

The third period was a rough one for the Catamounts.

Northeastern scored two goals in quick succession that put them up 3-2.

Petruzzelli however pulled off some late-period heroics to tie the game at three with less than

2:50 remaining.

“The two goals we gave up in the third period showed a complete lack of urgency on our part,” Sneddon said in postgame press conference. “Positively, we eeked out a point, but we’ve got to be a lot better moving forward.”

UVM lost the majority of faceoffs in the Saturday night loss, at 40-22, according to UVM athletics.

Santaguida ended the two game series with 49 saves.

UVM is now 2-4-1 on the season overall and 1-0-1 in Hockey East play.

The Catamounts next six games are against Hockey East opponents. This includes, University of Massachusetts-Lowell, University of Connecticut, University of Massachusetts Amherst and University of Maine.

Next up, the Cats face No. 4 UMass-Lowell next weekend in a two game series. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. this Friday at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

Player works through differences in culture

The first year of college is a huge transition for most American students but for international students, it is more different.

First-year Anna-Maria Manta came to UVM from Athens, Greece.

In addition to adjusting to the independence and responsibility students have in college, Manta said she is adjusting to American life as well.

This not only includes American culture, but also the style of basketball.

The 5-foot-10 shooting guard said she is looking forward to an exciting season and first year of college.

She will be wearing number 33.

“In America, the team has goals as a whole, but you can clearly see some talented people doing their own thing and taking over,” Manta said. “Whereas it’s different in Europe. You see the team as a whole, not as a single player.”

Manta said communication is key in bridging the different styles of play as well as two languages.

She is confident in her ability to contribute on the floor as a well-rounded player, but said communication is definitely something that she will strive to improve upon in her first season

on the team.

Adjusting to American culture and basketball are similar tasks, Manta said.

Despite being the only team member from overseas, she is not the only international athlete on the roster.

Locker room serves as second home for hockey team

For the men’s hockey team, the locker room has become a home away from home, players say.

“Naturally, the locker room is like a second home,” junior Mike Santaguida said.

Thirty wood stalls for each player’s hockey gear as well as 30 stalls for work out gear and street clothes border the rectangular locker room, with a big Catamount logo in the center of the floor.

The men’s hockey team locker room has stick racks, drying racks for equipment, surround sound speakers on all corners, projectors, televisions and a countertop serving as a snack bar.

It also has junior forward Tom Forgione’s personal favorite: the players lounge.

“You’ll often find at least 10 of us watching the Game Show Network or Sportscenter before practice,” Forgione said.

The players lounge includes a wide-screen satellite TV and La-Z-Boy couches, protected by a coded lock entry.

Junior defenseman Rob Hamilton said that when he needs to get out the house, he will do homework in the lounge.

“It’s one of my favorite places to be on campus at anytime,” Hamilton said. “I go to the rink early and stay late to hang out.”

“Our locker room helps team build and it also allows us to grow closer,” Forgione said.

“And that should translate to success on the ice.”

The sheer number of hours

over the course of the week and the “top-notch setup” of the locker room allow for this room to be a central hub for the hockey team.

Even during the offseason, the UVM men’s hockey team

can be found watching NHL playoff games in the lounge or doing school work together.

“The locker room is absolutely a home away from home for me,” Forgione said.

Spanish athlete adjusting to U.S.

Adjusting to life in a new country is never easy.

Men’s varsity soccer midfielder sophomore Jaime Miralles is working hard on making his international transition a smooth one.

Miralles arrived at UVM after men’s soccer head coach Jesse Cormier scouted him from the Villarreal Fútbol Academy in Spain.

“When I came from Spain, I was in a cultural shock,” Miralles said. “Many things are different, starting from dining schedules and the weather.”

Miralles also pointed out some differences in the way soccer is played in Spain and in the United States.

“The main difference is that [in Spain] we pay more attention to the ball rather than physicality,” Miralles said. “Here it’s more physical and more direct.”

Miralles has his own ideas about the game.

“I think the best system would be a mix between these styles: a physical team that is able to pass the ball and create opportunities,” he said Cormier played a key role in bringing Miralles to UVM, and he still thinks highly of the sophomore, he said.

“Jaime has been a very good addition to the squad as a player, the campus as a student, and the community as person and mentor,” Cormier said. “He is an exemplary role model and key member of our team.”

When Miralles announced his commitment to UVM Cormier said “Jaime will bring some dynamic qualities and ideas to our team and be a nice addition to our young attack. We feel he can be a good influence for us in the final third,” according to UVM athletics.

Miralles scored his first goal for the Catamounts this past season against the University of Portland Sept. 6, only two days after playing Oregon State University as a part of the Nike Portland Invitational tournament.

Miralles has been a consistent member of the team so far this season, having played in 16 of the team’s games and starting for 13 of them, according to UVM athletics.

Through his 16 games this season, Miralles has earned one

goal and one assist for a total of three points.

Miralles said one of the other main differences between soccer at the Villarreal Fútbol Academy and UVM is the season length.

He prefers the Spanish season.

During his days at Villarreal, the season started in August and ended in June, contrary to the three-month seasons here.

“You don’t have time to think about you are doing wrong,” Miralles said. “I think the intense short seasons may hinder the

development of the player.”

Miralles said one of the main reasons he chose to play college soccer in America was that it allows him to earn a degree while still playing the game.

“In Spain, there isn’t this culture of universities. You either go professional, or you go to study,” Miralles said. “For those who are trying to reach a professional level but also explore with a degree, this is the best option.”

Miralles also noticed differences in housing.

“It’s pretty expensive here for the quality of the rooms or apartments you can find,” he said. “I think it’s another example of the cultural differences we’re talking about. Students here get independent by going to school, which does not really happen in Spain.”

Men’s soccer will be in action for the first round of the America East Tournament Saturday, Nov. 7.

Basketball expects another productive year

The UVM men’s basketball team is looking to build off last year’s success after finishing with a 20-14 record, including a dominant 12-4 conference record.

The Catamounts came within three points of advancing to the America East Conference Championship last year, only to fall to Stony Brook University at home.

However, with several returning starters, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about this year’s team.

First-year Cade Nesbitt, who works as a team statistician, is expecting a lot from the squad.

“I expect big things and to win the America East,” Nesbitt said. “I read an article that said UVM will be one of the five biggest breakout teams in the country.”

If the Catamounts hope to live up to these expectations, with a young team they will need to rely on their core group of experienced players.

This year’s team will return five of the top six leading scorers from last year’s campaign.

Despite only having one senior on the roster, the team has plenty of experience. The Catamounts used a relatively young rotation last season.

“We have a core group of guys back from last year, a 20 win team,” head coach John Becker said. “A team that did advance to

the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational.”

If the team is going to build off of last year’s impressive run, one of the biggest things that the Catamounts must work on is turning the ball over.

“We can’t turn the ball over,” Becker said. “I think over 20 percent of our possessions last year ended in turnovers.”

The team’s lone senior, forward Ethan O’Day, is expected to have a star role on the team once again.

O’Day had a breakout junior campaign last year, earning 2015 America East All-Conference First Team honors while leading the entire conference in field goal percentage.

In addition to O’Day, sophomore point guard Trae BellHaynes will again help anchor the Catamounts’ starting five.

As Bell-Haynes continues to progress in his second year of college basketball, he hopes to build on his impressive first-year campaign.

T

he University of Vermont’s home for its men and women’s hockey teams has been the subject of recent conversation. Should the historic rink be kept or is it time to move on?

Gutterson Fieldhouse, better known as “the Gut” has been home to UVM hockey since 1963.

Of course, some renovations have been made since then, but the rink today shows its age. The argument for a new facility certainly holds worth. The wear on the bleachers is noticeable and concrete walls give away its age, making the rink hard to show off and entice recruits when they visit.

However when at full capacity, the Gut has a certain nuance that I have not found replicated at any other college rink.

Every rink is different and has some charm, but there is just something about the Gut. Sure other Hockey East schools seem great. BU’s Agganis Arena is state of the art and its amenities are amazing. UNH’s Whittemore Center is large and engulfing, but has no charm. The Whittemore Center feels like it was made with an industrial size cookie cutter.

At max capacity, the Gut is truly an amazing place to view hockey in one of its purest forms.

Another point to be made for the Gut is not only does this facility serve as a home to all UVM hockey players that go through the program, it is a symbol of hockey for most of the state of Vermont.

For high school, division one hockey players making it to the Gut is something they dream about and teams set as perennial goals.

For over 25 years the men’s

Some suggestions that could possibly work to find a middle ground between old and new would be adding a scoreboard either at one end of the rink or replacing the one over center ice that can show replays and video.

The unfortunate aspect of this issue is that there is no clear winning side.

In my opinion, UVM hockey needs a new home or significant updates to help vault the program into perennial contender status and to continue to draw in
