From informational presentations to game night and poetry readings, many say Deaf Awareness Week was a great success. Deaf Awareness Week, which took place the week of Sept. 20, aimed to raise awareness about American Sign Language (ASL), the fourth most commonly used language in the country, and expose people to deaf culture, the event’s website stated. “The deaf community is probably one of the largest overlooked minorities in the United States,” ASL Program Coordinator Keri Ogrizovich said. UVM currently employs two !"#$%&&#"&' ()%*+' ,*' -./0' 1*2' current graduate student Alex Lynch will be the third as of next semester, Ogrizovich said. PCs no longer required in BSAD Goodbye

Business school now allows students to use Macs By Katy Petiford Staff Writer

Macloving business students don’t need to worry about ditching their computer because PCs are no longer required. In the past, the University recommended that business students purchase their computer through the computer depot, which would automatically join them into the business domain.

Wiz Khalifa causes excitement, panic Khalifa well-received by students, anticipation results in chaos

By Naciim Benkriera Cynic Correspondant

Immediately upon entering the Grand Maple Ballroom for the Wiz Khalifa show Sept. 23, it was apparent that the typical motherly fears about a hiphop concert were realized. Tightlypacked groups of students, interlaced with clouds of marijuana smoke and chatter of excitement, stood around waiting for the concert to start. The opener for Khalifa, Yelawolf, was recently signed by Interscope Records. Yelawolf paced back and forth defiantly as he unloaded a skilled, fastpaced rap riddled with graphic and suggestive lyrics. Beyond his mohawk and lean tattooed body, Yelawolf combined his thicklydrawled southern slang and automatic rhymes performing such songs as “Pop the Trunk” and “You Ain’t No DJ,” a song he recently cut with rap superstar, Big Boi. Some students were very pleased with the opener, while others made it a point to be vocal about their disapproval. “A bunch of people were booing at Yelawolf,” senior Justin Leveille said. “I was really disappointed to see everyone booing. Yelawolf killed it and no one seemed to notice or care.”

According to Leveille, people were too focused on the headliner to appreciate a good opener. “Apparently the kids booing him offstage had never been to a rap show before,” he said. Some students, however, insisted that he was just bad. “[Yelawolf was] by far the worst insult to rap and hip hop that I’ve ever seen in my life,” junior Jirias Charabati said. “It made me want to cry.” Either way, when an altercation with a crowd member caused Yelawolf to leave the stage and punch a student, Leveille felt things went too far. “You should not take to violence,” Leveille said. “You go to a show to rap.” Finally, answering the calls of hundreds of anxious students, Wiz Khalfia took the stage at 10:30 p.m., wearing a backpack and his trademark piratelogo chain. He jumped right into his set list with the jams off his recent mixtapes “Kush and Orange” and “Burn After Rolling.” The show was made possible by the Ski and Snowboard Club (UVM SSC), UVM Program Board (UPB) and SA concerts. “[Greg Ramey of UPB] really pulled this whole show together,” Vice President of UVM SSC Will Curchin said. “Also the SA Concerts Crew,

Sonic ambience thrills at The Monkey House By Robert Marcantonio Cynic Correspondant

Postrock outfit Caspian wrapped up their brief tour with a stunning and utterly overwhelming performance on Sunday, Sept. 19 at The Monkey House in Winooski. Montrealbased supporting act This Quiet Army took the stage first. One man, armed with a guitar, video projector and plethora of effect processors and looping stations, built a haunting atmosphere in the club. Caspian then set up on the floor and the crowd huddled around. Dressed in nearly all black, with front man Philip Jamieson towering over everyone in the audience, their presence dominated. They began with a choral intro and crescendoed into an ambience that was both peaceful and ominous, like the calm before a storm. Then without warning, they smashed into the crowd with a flood of sonic intensity that left some feeling momentarily helpless. “When they took the stage I didn’t really know what to expect; their sound sort of erupted in this tinyass venue — it was overwhelming and they just rocked it,” junior Aaron Haight, who had never heard Caspian before, said. Even though Sunday was the last night of their 11day

tour, Caspian was not content to go home to Beverly, Mass. quietly. “We’re gonna give you guys all we’ve got tonight,” Jamieson said. Their set flowed between moments of sheer power and liberating sonic submergence as in the end of “Some Are White Light,” and “Moksha,” which is the Sanskrit word for liberation, and quieter moments that offered the audience a chance to come up for air. Caspian has no vocals whatsoever. This allows their intricate guitar harmonies and textures backed by driving bass to speak for themselves and had a profound effect for some. “I guess you could say the first guy was pretty cool,” Haight said. “He was interesting but Caspian just blew my mind.” Jamieson said he felt pretty good about the show. “The sound was rough, but that’s par for the course at small venues,” he said. “I couldn’t really hear the bass and kick drum.” As the band had gotten used to doing threemonth tours after they released their second LP “Tertia” in 2009, this tour was “a nice manageable amount of time,” Jamieson said. “Short but sweet.”

Rapper Wiz Khalifa performed at the Davis Center on Friday night. and the Davis Center Technical staff.” Some students hope to send a message to SA concerts about future bookings. “Tickets sold out in three days out of the box office, 10 days before the show,” Ramey said. “Next time we are going bigger. From Wiz to Yelawolf, there is a lot more to come.” The high demand for the show went even beyond the box office as some students took up unconventional ways to get a ticket. First year Lauren Donahue

got her ticket by winning a contest on Ramey’s company Hungry Headies’s Facebook page. Other students paid much higher than the original $7 ticket price. Students were posting on the Wiz Khalifa event page up until the day of the show, offering to sell and buy tickets for up to $60 each. “These tickets were in real high demand,” Leveille said. “[People were] selling tickets from $7 to $60. [It definitely sends] a message to Program

Board that rap shows is what people want. Hopefully that will influence Springfest and other concerts to come.” Curchin agreed that more acts of this genre should come to the area. “I’d love to see more hip hop acts come to UVM and Burlington,” he said. “I know it’s been said for years that Burlington’s role as the in between city for Boston [and] Montreal brings the good stuff, but let’s actually make that reputation worth something.”

Student cookie delivery business advocates, ‘no shake, just headies’ Hungry Headies capitalizes on late night munchies By Tabatha Leahy Staff Writer

Junior Greg Ramey and sophomore Wyatt Fowler, both Community Development and Applied Economics majors, launched their business idea Hungry Headies, a cookie delivery service, to the UVM community. Last year was a softlaunch for the business, which has since expanded with their past success Fowler said. “Hungry Headies was a huge hit last year, and we are now under a limited liability license,” Ramey said. The service is open Thursday through Saturday, 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. The homemade chocolate chip cookies come in a sixpack for $5, a 12 rack for $9 or a 20 stack for $16. Fowler bakes a fresh batch for each order. “The cookies come right out of the oven to your door,” Fowler said. There is a hired deliverer who delivers the freshly baked chocolate chip cookies to Burlington and the UVM community.

Hungry Headies is not delivering to St. Michaels College yet but would like to in the near future, Fowler said. “We need more businesses like Hungry Headies in the Burlington community. Hungry Headies has developed from a local student business into a small franchise. Keeping their options open, Ramey and Fowler said that they foresee expanding the cookie delivery service into more than cookies. Hungry Headies sunglasses are available and in the process of ordering Tshirts along with other merchandise.

NoNotes may mean no class By Henry Bond Staff Writer The idea of recording your lectures then having your notes typed up for you is an intriguing idea, or at least that is what Matt Whitteker, founder of NoNotes. com, an online transcribing service, thought. Faculty members worry that students will use this service as a subsitute for class. NoNotes transcribes digital voice recordings into notes for students who do not want to or are not able to take them themselves. Simply record your class, study group, brainstorming session or tutoring session, and 2;:")!#$%&#)2!1"#+:&#$"#>">"$&.? com, the NoNotes website advertises. The turnaround time is one to three business days, at which point you can download the typed notes or have them emailed to you, the website says. Currently, a similar project is being undertaken on UVM’s campus to assist with class note taking. Universal Design for Learning

(UDL), a UVM initiative, is a framework for teaching and learning that addresses a wide variety of learning needs, styles and preferences, according to the UVM Center on Disability and Community Inclusion (CDCI) website. Sharing is an important aspect that UDL highlights. “Sharing [such as voice recordings posted online] provides more options for students to take in material and more openness versus competition,” Puja Gupta, a graduate student working with UDL, said. Despite this, UVM carefully articulates its policy on shared material and intellectual property. Intellectual property, as !&+3&!#@'#)#;":10'#;".$&!#"3#$%&# UVM website, is any potentially copyrightable creation or potentially patentable invention. For some students, instructor permission to access shared audio information would be useful. “Occasionally, I have to miss class due to an illness, and I have a lot of friends that occasionally miss class due to participation in UVM athletics. Walking by the Harris Millis dining hall at 7 p.m., passersby will be greeted by a symphony of gurgling, grumbling and groaning. The main instrument of these sounds — hungry stomachs. With the crowds growing larger dur ing meal times, brunch and dinner ser vices have slowed down to a crawl leaving many students frustrated and famished. Long lines with a sometimes 45 min ute wait for an omelet can really pique the appetite. The closing of the Simpson dining hall for renovation has wreaked havoc on the other dining halls. The spillover has most notably af fected Harris Millis, the unlimited dining facility now closest to Redstone Campus. The renovations to Simpson dining hall are going to be exciting. The dining facility will be more restaurantstyle and will revitalize the Redstone dining experi ence. But until then, the closing of Simpson will continue to inconvenience students. Dining halls not only serve as a place to feed our insatiable college appetites, but also as a social venue. Friends meet up, relax, share a meal and talk about their day. When crowds grow so large that seats become a luxury, the atmosphere turns from one of relaxation to one of frustra tion. The dining halls are one of the few on campus venues where students are free from reminders of their studies. They can go there and unwind. Mountain Day Here at the University of Vermont, students are surrounded by the natural beauty of the Green Mountains. Sadly, most of us have absolutely no time to go anywhere near them. During autumn, the best time of year for hiking, students are ravaged by a heavy workload and a full schedule. Between clubs, homework and that damned paper we’ve all been putting off, no one has time to just get out and enjoy some of the best trails in the country. Luckily, there may be a solution for all you starved hikers and outdoor enthusiasts out there, and it is called

Mountain Day. In colleges and universities around New England, one day a year is dedicated to going outside and reveling in the changing leaves and crisp air. More than 20 colleges celebrate this day by canceling classes and encouraging students to spend it outdoors. The most interesting part of this is that Mountain Day is !"#$"!$%$&'()*+)$,%-$(.(/-$-(%/0$ On the most glorious day of fall, the colleges announce in early morning the cancellation of classes.

Mountain Day will never become a reality without the help of the student body. This not only guarantees perfect weather but gives the students a sense of absolute freedom. Now I know many of the faculty and administration at the University of Vermont would call this frivolous.

However, I would like to call to attention UVM’s serious lack of any sort of tradition. Yes, there is the Naked Bike Ride, but there is not a single university sanctioned time when students at Groovy UV get to go out and truly experience 12-$#2(-$%/($2(/($*!$#2($+/&#$ place. OPINION

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2010

I’m slightly perturbed, and I’ll do something about it if I get a chance Many of you caught Jon Stewart’s selfproclaimed big announcement last week on “The Daily Show”: a Rally to Restore Sanity on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. To regular viewers of “The Daily Show,” this type of rhetoric doesn’t come as a surprise; a key theme of Stewart’s banter is the absurdity of politics. I think the rally is a great idea. It doesn’t have to have hundreds of thousands of attendees to be successful. In fact, in many ways it has already succeeded. Its purpose is to send the message that there are Americans who aren’t swayed by loaded oneliners or outofcontext soundbites or inciteful rhetoric. They are liberals, conservatives, socialists, libertarians, moderates and independents alike. They do not always agree, but it is in their disagreement that they are most noble. They disagree, but are able to move beyond that. They don’t caricature their opponents as Hitler or throw rocks through the windows of congressional +*!$).'+('-&#,)'09)'5+3)(",)"0' *+('EFGG'+('-(%"5'#..#8&0'(%=).'0+' political rallies. In this perverted time of a polarized media, “The Daily Show,” which airs after an adult

cartoon featuring crass Colorado thirdgraders, has become an unlikely source of information and a strong voice of reason for many Americans. An online poll conducted by Time magazine last year found Stewart to be the most trusted newscaster in America, ahead of Brian Williams, Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric.

There are Americans who aren’t swayed by loaded one-liners or out-of-context soundbites or inciteful rhetoric Some have labeled Stewart’s rally as a mere publicity stunt. I contend that since “The Daily Show” has won two Peabody Awards, 14 Emmys and has hosted three heads of state in the last week, it doesn’t need extra publicity. For Stewart and his writing staff on “The Daily Show,” the 24hour news cycle is the gift that keeps on giving. Take this very rally, for example. Jon Stewart announced a nonpartisan rally to bring out the moderates in America who don’t resort to the Hitler

Dear editor,

invoking rhetoric that dominates headlines. Yet CNN’s story covering the announcement led off with “two Comedy Central funny men are apparently entering the political fray.” While viewers have little doubt as to the political leanings of Stewart and his writers, “The Daily Show” distinguishes itself from other cable political programs in that it is bipartisan — it makes jokes at the expense of liberals and conservatives alike. Political ideologies aren’t the target of Stewart’s puns, rather, it is the perpetual absurdity of politics that has kept Stewart and his cohorts in business for over a decade. In the episode where Stewart announced his rally, he talked about how the 15 percent of Americans who hold radical views dominate the conversation of the moderate 85 percent. It is in this way that a bigoted pastor from Florida with a congregation of dozens could dominate headlines for over a week, from The New York Times to the Burlington Free Press. The birther movement, despite the pressure of a "+0#(%H)2'I)(0%!$#0)'+*'J%3)'K%(09' from Hawaii, made headlines across the media spectrum during the 2008 Democratic

primaries. The fact that whether or not the president is a Muslim has become a national discussion — 18 percent of Americans believe that he is, according to an August Pew research poll — supports Stewart’s claim that ideological extremists dominate public discourse. The proliferation of cable channels has allowed programs to cater to political ideologies further and further from the center, appealing to and seeking out those who represent the 15 percent of Americans with radical views. Why have cable channels and programming been able to thrive in recent years? Because the 85 percent love to watch and witness the antics of those fringe opinions. So in this age of increasingly polarized media, let’s take a cue from Stewart. It is time to restore sanity and civility to the American political conversation. Upperclassmen stung by work-study cuts Dear editor,

Quick Opinions

I was a little disappointed to realize that you forgot to mention a rather huge factor with the workstudy program and the loss of funding to juniors and seniors. While %07.'0(8)'09#0'09)'$80.'2%2'"+0'./)$%!$#&&:' affect upperclassmen, it is usually these upperclassmen who have the most to lose experiencewise from these cuts. I myself am a senior at UVM. I had Federal WorkStudy funding for both my sophomore and junior years — I transferred to UVM at the beginning of my sophomore year. During my junior year, I took on a workstudy job as a research assistant in the anthropology department. I’m an anthropology major, so a lot of what I was

doing were things that I would probably be doing for the rest of my life as an anthropologist. When I lost workstudy funding, I lost that opportunity to continue working on projects that matter to me and my future career as an anthropologist. I know I’m not alone here. I’ve talked to several people on campus who were doing jobs related to what they were planning to do upon graduating from UVM. These jobs not only looked great on a resume, but when it comes down to it, longevity is just as important as the experience. My loss of funding has cut that longevity short for me and other students on campus. Many of us are now looking for jobs that /#:;'<)'$#"70'#**+(2'0+'!"2'.+,)09%"5'*+('

experience because it doesn’t cover living expenses such as groceries. Unfortunately for many of us, we have to look off campus for those jobs because the competition is too stiff on campus. Even then, off campus jobs don’t cater to a student’s schedule. In his opinion piece, “Dear Mr. President, it’s about time,” Max Krieger makes the claim that Obama has completely wasted the power that comes with his presidency. This has become a common complaint from those on the far left. No, he has not passed what many liberals would like to see passed — singlepayer health care, end to wars, etc. — but those are huge issues that will likely never be passed in a nation where half the country believes in minimal government power. But let us look at what our president has accomplished. Accomplishments that, considering the “Just Say No” Republicans and 24hour Fox News cycle he is going up against, put him, at this stage in his presidency, among the top of the class. He has passed the biggest !"#"$%#&'()*+(,'-%&&'.%"$)' FDR, giving the government unprecedented power to regulate institutions like Wall Street, banks and credit card companies. He has passed the biggest health care reform bill since LBJ, paving the road for a &)..'/(+!012(%3)"'#"2',+()' affordable health care system. He has granted a $2,500 tax $()2%0'0+'!3)',%&&%+"'*#,%&%).'0+' help with college tuition. He has returned the states’ right to regulate the medical use of marijuana without the worry of federal law enforcement interference. He has appointed a progressive Latina, seen as highly competent by those on both sides of the aisle, to the Supreme Court, preventing a farright swing. Perhaps most importantly, he has changed the way we are looked at by the rest of the world, from an image that emanated imperialism and isolationism to one that is largely looked upon favorably by working toward cooperation and peace — see direct discussions with Iran, engagements with the Muslim world, end to combat in Iraq. With the coming elections, Congress will become more conservative. The expectations for President Obama will have to be lowered. Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise. For one thing, working against Obama were the sky high expectations set for him, partly by himself, going into the White House. 4/+"')"0)(%"5'+*!$)6' Obama has had to deal with two wars, a wounded American image and an economic mess. Considering where we were at the end of President Bush’s term two years ago, Obama’s record is something he can be proud of. Sincerely, Mart Schneider Class of 2011

NFL PICKS WEEK FOUR Kolb, and the comeback story of Michael Vick. It’s another week of NFL picks Its odd to watch the Eagles put with some interesting divisional !"#$#%&'()$*#!+#!++,"'&-,#./,(!0,/# matchups. Want to be a guest with Vick leading them. I know there are PETA (DG) Diana Giunta members all over vomiting at (EZ) Eli Zink this, but I love it. Not enough to pick the Eagles however. McNabb Washington Redskins vs. and the ‘Skins will edge out Vick and the Eagles in a close, hard Philadelphia Eagles fought game.

Staff Report

This is the most intriguing matchup of the weekend. Donovan McNabb and the Redskins against Michael Vick and the Eagles. That is, if Vick can maintain his outstanding play. A story that could continue for the entire year is the quarterback battle between the future, Kevin

Baltimore Ravens vs. Pittsburgh Steelers Baltimore’s offense thus far has been, well, terrible. Discard the game against Cleveland last week and Baltimore has scored 22 points against Cincinnati and New York. Things don’t get any better when Baltimore has to go up against Troy Polamalu and a recharged Pittsburgh defense. At quarterback for Pittsburgh, Dennis Dixon went down to a

knee injury in week two while Ben Roethlisberger still serves his suspension. This leaves either Charlie Batch or Byron Leftwhich to start for the Steelers against a scary good Baltimore defense. Ray Rice should be able to gain enough on the ground for Joe Flacco to start playing the way we know he is capable. Expect a low scoring affair in this one with Baltimore edging out their interdivision rival.
