Coke’s contract renewal on the rocks Students question CocaCola’s business ethics By Becky Hayes Staff Writer

A company accused by some of kidnapping, torture and murder may get their contract renewed by the University. UVM’s contract with Coca Cola expires on June 30, 2012, and the discussion of whether UVM will renew it will begin in the spring of 2011, according to the contract. “We really want to let students know as much as we know so that they can make an informed decision and so that we can make an informed decision [about whether to keep CocaCola products on campus],” junior Annie Doran said. The purpose of the Student Action Committee is to question CocaCola’s environmental and social practices, senior and chair of the committee Jesse Simmons said. According to Killer Coke, an organization that opposes Coca Cola, the company has engaged in a number of human rights and unethical business violations. Communities in India are experiencing severe water shortages as a direct result of CocaCola’s overextraction of groundwater used in bottling plants, a document from the India Resource Center stated. Killer Coke also condemns

CocaCola for allegedly murdering union leaders in Colombia. Violent paramilitaries, often working closely with plant management, have tortured, kidnapped or illegally detained hundreds of other Coke workers, according to Killer Coke. “We think that the University could have a very powerful impact on the operations of CocaCola by not renewing the contract,” Simmons said.

“[Coca-Cola] is literally killing people in Colombia.” Jesse Simmons Chair of Student Action Committee Paul Behan, marketing director for the oncampus food supplier Sodexho, a business partner of CocaCola, supports keeping the company at UVM. “Students here like the product and would be saddened if it went away,” Behan said. CocaCola donates their products at public events, keeps the campus wellstocked and is always a readily available business partner, Behan said.

A CocaCola delivery is made to campus last semester. The CocaCola contract is up for renewal this Spring when it expires, prompting groups like Killer Coke to protest the University’s partnership with the company. The movement to reduce bottled water on campus is related to the CocaCola issue, according to the Student Action Committee. Thirteen percent of Coca 9-,+:&%6.-)#%+#%123%*-5/&%4.-5% Dasani bottled water, Simmons said. “But the problem is, if Coca Cola sales decrease by more than 10 percent, UVM has to pay massive costs,” he said.

That night, the Rutgers University student who sent the message used a camera in his dormitory room to stream the roommate’s intimate encounter live on the Internet, authorities said. Three days later, Clementi commited suicide, jumping from the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River. The vigil also honored the lives of youth lost to suicide that did not make national news. “We tell everyone, especially youth, to ‘be yourself,’” guest speaker and author Jan Donnely said. “We are here to say that ‘be yourself’ is not a lie we tell our children, each other and ourselves.” Voluntary speakers made comments addressing the recent suicides. “A lot of us have been through this, have had to deal !"#$% &"'(")*+(#% ,-&&% +&% +% ./&0,#% of suicide,” Vice President of Free2B Rachel Koh said. “We all have a reason for being here.” “When I was too close, an angel threw me to the ground and held me there while I was kicking and screaming, pleading with them. Possible changes to come for general education requirements Committee wants student input on potential modifications By Katy Petiford Staff Writer

The University is trying to make the general education requirements of all students more similar and the seven individual colleges more cohesive. UVM is one of the only universities of its size to have colleges that are so independent, Student Government Association (SGA) Vice President David Maciewicz said. The focus of the Joint Committee of General Education is to make the general education requirements match the goals and missions of the University, not just that of the individual

college. “What do we aspire for all UVM students across the board? What makes a UVM education distinct?” Associate Provost and Cochair of the Joint Committee on General Education Brian Reed said. The new general education requirements would teach every student skills that are stated in the UVM vision and mission statement, Reed said. The administration has been focused on all of the colleges having the same principles for a long time, Maciewicz said. However, some students said they would be displeased if there )%#( %( 4,!"( &'0-"+( 9&!!09&2&4(

throughout the University. “I don’t know why they would call for cohesion when the independence of each college is what makes the University of Vermont unique,” junior Victoria Barton said. Other students said that they didn’t know that the new proposals were in the works. “I had no idea,” junior Caroline Fenn said. “As long as each college doesn’t lose what’s pertinent to it, I’m okay with it.” The committee has already created one model for changing the general education requirements and hope to have several to present to the Curricular Affairs Committee in

early January, Reed said. “The world is changing rapidly and we need to ensure our graduates are broadly educated, adaptable and capable of succeeding,” an email sent from the committee to the UVM community said. The goal is to present to the full Faculty Senate in March and then to the board of trustees on May 20, 2011. If approved, the new general education requirements would be implemented starting with the graduating class of 2016, he said. “We think this is really important,” Reed said. “It’s been rare that the University has been looking at universitywide

curriculum.” In an effort to create a core mission of goals across the University, the committee has been holding engagement meetings to bring the topic to the attention of faculty, staff and students. Over the course of the semester, the committee will hold 60 meetings with colleges and individual departments, as well as all residence halls in an attempt to get their opinions on possible changes. Students are encouraged to have their voice heard by taking the survey online at www.surveymonkey.com/s/ L3RWHTC.

UVM Homecoming and family weekend brings big smiles, big crowds and big bills By Lindsey Waters Staff Writer

The Sheraton Hotel in Burlington sold out for the weekend on Sept. 30, a Sheraton

staff member said. The hotel front desk recommended making a reservation three months in advance due to high demands so the majority of rooms were already booked three months prior, the Sheraton staff member said. The number of hotel rooms reserved this year was not as overwhelming as previous years, the Sheraton Hotel staff member said. “Last year was really crazy … it got to the point that we had to send people to other hotels.” While the cost per night at the Sheraton Hotel is usually around $199, the price can rise to $229 during times of high demand, the staff member said. The Marriott in Burlington

also considers UVM’s homecoming and family weekend a “special event weekend” and raises the nightly fee by $20, a Marriott staff member said. Students and restaurant workers said that the crowds and waits continued to grow on Church street. Leunig’s Bistro, located on the corner of Church and College streets, did not take dinner reservations during homecoming and family weekend, Leunig’s Bistro manager said. “We found that families would make reservations for multiple restaurants and then not show up for their table,” the manager said. “Reservations became more detrimental than helpful.”

known as The Clery Act, campus safety information is published for the university community via the Internet. “Personal safety is a responsibility each and every one of us bears, and we at Police Services need your assistance to make our campus a safe environment in which to learn, live and grow,” Toumey said.

An email was recently sent out to students providing the link to the UVM Clery Report. If you have any questions or suggestions about campus safety, law enforcement at UVM or how to improve this guide, please feel free to contact Police Services at 6562027 or via email at Police@ uvm.edu with your comments or suggestions.

Stevens’ electronic rhythms shift to intimacy By Robert Marcantonio Staff Writer

In Chuck Palahniuk’s “Fight Club,” Tyler Durden says, “It’s only after we’ve lost everything that we’re free to do anything.” Sufjan Stevens’ abandonment of the 50 States Project after completing only Michigan and Illinois left him in a similar position. !"#$%&'($&)$*%+&,"&+#*-.*./)0& Stevens brings us the electronic, schizophrenic, implosive, post modern, carefully orchestrated mess of an album “The Age of Adz”. It sounds like an internal battle and deconstructs itself as Stevens explores themes of love, faith, anxiety and suicide. In “Vesuvius,” he compares himself to the volcano that buried Pompeii in ash and seems aware that this step in his musical career is a risky one, as he sings: “Sufjan, follow the path/it leads to an article of imminent death/Sufjan, follow ),2%&4$*%#9",55,8&#4$&1*:$;< He may get a little preachy in “Get Real Get Right” when he sings, “You know you really gotta get right with the Lord,” but this song may be a nod to the schizophrenic visions of a future of aliens and a dark age by artist Royal Robertson, whose art Stevens showcases on the album. “The Age of Adz” seems schizophrenic in and of itself. Horns and choral refrains battle synth armies in the title track, then ends quietly with Sufjan singing over an acoustic -26#*%;&=6+&'5#$%$3&(,/*5+&+$$:& detached from the clean guitar sound and it seems like there is a disconnect between Sufjan and himself. Paradoxically, panning shocks of static seem to be the most consistent sound throughout the album; it’s held together by sounds of disintegration. There is an urgency to “The Age of Adz” — a tension that doesn’t resolve. There’s a sense that this is a product from an authentic Sufjan, but that even he’s not sure who that is. It’s scheduled to release Oct. 12 by Asthmatic Kitty Records, the same day he kicks off his tour with a show at Metropolis in Montreal. Until then, you can stream it for free at www. npr.org.

Other students may feel shortchanged, but it seems more unjust if student athletes are forced out of a class they need to take just because Bobby needs his Thursday nights free to party.
