passing more than last year’s team. “It’s hard to run more than we’ve run in past years,” said Lenz. “We’ve tried to use pass when everybody’s cheating so hard they’re loaded in the box, but this year I think it’ll be a little more where we can get one-on-one situations with some of the kids we have and pass regardless.” North Fremont football has a culture and an attitude, Lenz said. “We place our foundation on the hard work and being physical, and the kids have really gotten a lot stronger in this last year from most of the kids in weight training,” he said. “They really took to heart getting stronger, and I think that’ll give us a little bit of an edge.”

North Fremont football has a young team, but much of that young team is made of returns who made the quarterfinals each of the last two seasons. The team lost seven seniors from last year’s team, including the defensive player of their league and starting offensive lineman Gus Henry. The team also lost strong side linebacker Jordan Sharp, offensive lineman Brian Huttinger, wide receiver Logan Teske and running back Shawn Bell. Head coach Ben Lenz said young players on the team are playing well in preseason practices. Junior quarterback Garrett Hawkes is slated to start behind center. Hawkes is an exceptional athlete who won the 110-meter hurdles in the state track meet last year and started for the Huskies’ basketball team. As a run-dominant team, North Fremont looks to have a stable of running backs in their backfield mix, including sophomore Riggen Cordingley and senior Hunter Zwart splitting time at one running back spot and juniors Chris Hansen and Brice Fisher splitting time at the other spot. Peyton Litton is another player that might spend time in the backfield and out wide at receiver. Most of the offensive line are sophomores. One of the team’s weaknesses will be depth, since they only have a couple handful of players similar to the number they have in a typical year. Though Lenz plans to stick with the run-heavy game plan that has helped him succeed, he could see this team

Though it’s early in her first season with North Fremont girls’ soccer, head coach Tamra Klein is already impressed with the girls she has on the team. “They’re showing tons of motivation and heart right now, so that’s nice to see — a lot of improvement for the first couple weeks already.” Klein said. “So it hopefully will be a great 2017 year for them.” This will be Klein’s first year as a high school soccer coach, but she has coached youth soccer for several years. Klein inherits a team that lost four prolific seniors to graduation. “From what the girls have told me they lost some good seniors from last year,” Klein said. “I watched them in a couple games, so I saw how good they were.” The remaining players aren’t scrubs either, however. “The incoming freshmen plus
(the players who are) new to the team are really good,” Klein said. “Surprisingly, they have good allaround-athletic ability, so it’s kind of coming easy. It kind of makes up for the talent loss.” Klein said teamwork and discipline are two things she’s emphasizing to her athletes. “I haven’t had a team that I’ve actually coached or seen that has worked so well together and has actually been good,” Klein said. “There’s no tension or anything on the field whatsoever. Everybody works well. Everybody helps each other out.” Klein said her players patiently teach one another when one of them has a question. The team could use more supporters at their games, Klein said. “(Girls’ soccer) is a little lower on the list of sports, I know, but I know if (fans) would come to watch and support they would they’d be pleasantly surprised with what they’d come to find,” she said. She is excited to watch her team

North Fremont volleyball coach hopes Cross-country depth pushes team to new heights team brings in new talent

This year’s North Fremont volleyball team is smaller than last year’s, but that doesn’t mean they’ve lost any depth. “It’s kind of exciting to have two teams that are pretty even skill-wise, and then they’re going to get lots of playing time because of the (low) numbers,” said head coach Leslie Wilson. Wilson said the team’s even skill level allows them to sharpen one another through competition. Although the team has only been practicing for a week, they’re already intensely invested. “This first week that we’ve had prachem.tice they’ve shown a lot of heart and dedication and passion towards each other and towards the game, and I’m excited to see what happens,” Wilson said. With only two freshmen the team is mainly comprised of juniors and seniors. The season the team will be without graduated seniors Kristie Hawkes, Aubrey Burch and Mahayla Mower. This year’s seniors are Alex Lerwill, Kiara Sharp and Kylie Anderson. “Each of them play such a different role, and it’s exciting to see what they’re going to be able to do. One’s a setter (Lerwill), ones a libero (Anderson), and one’s a front row hitter and blocker (Sharp). The team is tweaking little habits and melding their games on the court to become a more effective unit, Wilson said. This year’s theme for the Diggers is ‘Have heart.’ To Wilson, this motto also applies off the court, where she wants File photo her players to love each other and show North Fremont’s Alex Lerwill goes up for a spike in this file photo. kindness to one another. One member of the team has a 3-year-old cousin named Emily Baum who’s fighting a rare form of cancer. The team has ROSTER started using the hashtag #foremily on social media to support Name # Year the young girl. Alex Lerwill 3 Sr “Having heart will be us fighting for Emily and playing our Kylie Anderson 6 Sr hardest for her,” Wilson said. Kiara Sharp 15 Sr Wilson said this year’s team is more unified than her average Kelby Dye 11 Jr squad. Alexa Nedrow 8 Jr “I feel like our unity is going to be strong this year, Wilson Renee Fabanich 12 Jr said. “In years past sometimes that’s kind of a hiccup, but I feel 2 Soph like we’re really strong and unified already, so I’m excited to see Brook Jones Baily Jones 1 Soph that become even stronger as the season goes on.”

In Holly Johnston’s first three seasons as head coach of the North Fremont cross-country team the team has struggled to bring out elite talent, but this year, at least for the boys team, that is changing. Between new boys and those who have been in the high-school-attached junior high program, the team is bringing in five boys who have a chance to compete in state. Freshmen Asher Johnston and Tyson Lerwill both look to have strong seasons after dominating in the junior high program last season, which Holly also coaches. “We had a full five super strong men,” said Holly. Some of the runners started with the program when they were in fifth grade. “They’ve just been working their way up, and we’ve finally got a few of them that are in the high school team now,” Holly said. The only hiccup for the team has been that top runner junior Jack Wynn developed appendicitis. He’s expected to miss around four weeks. The one returning runner for the club will be senior Vance Reeves. The other three boys on the team are junior Ross Wynn and sophomores Stetson Potter and Caden Johnston. On the girls side the team only has two runners, freshmen Kenadee Bohn and junior Macy Rankin, after the team lost senior Brayleigh Johnston to graduation and three other runners who moved away. The team does have some talented girls who will be coming into the high school program in the next couple years. “We’ve got some great talent (on our junior high team), and they’re going to be competitive,” Holly said. Holly is excited for the upcoming season. “We love the kids,” said Holly. “Love the group. It’s fun to coach them. They’re fantastic. They have great attitudes, you know? They cheer each other on, and they’re kind, and I like that.” Roster was unavailable.

Bobcat girls’ soccer under new coaches SJ sports writer
Longtime head coach for Madison Neil Floyd is gone, and the Bobcats will be led by two “associate heads,” Jaymon Birch and Joe Allen. They have coached the girls in the club team over the last few years. “Joe has coached all of the girls, and I have coached all but the seniors for several years, and we know their talents and habits,” said Birch. “We are very excited about this season, as these players won multiple tournaments during club play this year.” Lost to graduation from last year’s 15-5-1 team were Caitlin Brizzee, who was the Area Player of the Year; Allyson Rigby; Ashley Larson; Mikaela Maurer; Sonnet Dummar; Mazie Allen; and Sierra Orr. The Bobcats are returning three starters from last season, Annalise Brunson, a freshman, as a forward, and Sydney Thueson and Laura Sommer as midfielders. “We will be very young this season, but extremely talented,” Birch said. “We have the leadership of four seniors in Sommer, Hannah Rowe, Cassidy Quinton and Korryn Gulley followed by two juniors (Thueson and Kennadey Yates). That leaves us with 10 sophomores on the varsity squad.” The Bobcats will use their speed and quickness as they will run a “false 9” offense, which is designed to control the middle of the field, instead of the 4-4-2 traditional set that most teams run. Brunson will work from the front line with Thueson, Sommers and Breckley Birch as mid-fielders and Hannah Bolingbroke and Julia Williams on the wings. The starting defenders will probably be Rowe, Ali Dummar, Jyrikka Busby and Gulley, with Yates as the goalie. “Our team is designed so that Thueson and Sommer will control the middle of the field, with their aggressiveness giving us opportunities for long-distance scoring that will open the short scoring from Brunson and the wings,” Birch said. “Our varsity and junior varsity are very fluid, and
players will be able to move up or down depending on what the team needs.” Assisting Birch and Allen will be two new co-JV coaches, Jenny Steiner and Jennifer Walters, as both teams will practice together most of the time.
“Madison had never won a game at the state tournament before last year, and we want to build on that. We will be tough locally and need to get to state to continue building a tradition.”

After missing a year of wearing out the Madison boys’ soccer sideline, Coach Dan Dummar will be back leading the Bobcats for the 2017 season. Dummar missed last season while filling the head coaching job at BYU-Hawaii. “I am happy to be back,” Dummar said. “We will be young, but we have some very talented solid players. Madison is the best place for a coach, as we not only have good kids but the administration and the community supports and helps the coaches.” Graduation and moves have left the Bobcats missing most of their forwards — Cameron Loveland, Tofik Haws, Caleb Barzee and Josh Stewart have moved on. This year at forward position to start the season will be junior Hunter Clay and sophomores Jacob Christiansen and Tanner Hall. “We will have a very talented middle and back players,” Dummar said. “Jose Perez is one of the best players in the area, and he will play the middle as the quarterback of the team. He will joined by fellow senior Carson Meredith. Joseph Sanns and Nathan Fullmer will be an outstanding back line for us, as both are great athletes.” Adam Hernandez, a freshman, made the varsity squad, and Dummar expects him to play the majority of time, as he is quick and talented. Hernandez has been playing on the Olympic development team for Idaho and can play multiple positions. The Bobcats has one of the best goalies in the state, but a broken leg early in the summer has sidelined Gerrardo Ayon for the first part of the season. “You never know or prophecy who is favored until they play a few games,” said Dummar when asked about the district ratings. “From what the boys have told me, Hillcrest will probably be the favored team with Rigby being a dark horse.” Madison will travel to Twin Falls to take on Canyon Ridge on Aug. 18 and then will host two games on Aug. 22 and 23 when Blackfoot and Preston visit Ferguson Field at the Madison Junior High School. The junior varsity will start at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7 p.m.

the district and state meets. “Our goal this year is to place at least four girls in the top five or six at district,” Lemon said. “We started out as freshmen together, and now we are seniors and have worked very hard this summer to prepare for this season.” The other senior girls that have been involved throughout high school are Kiley Moldenhauer and Jessi Sutton, who should be in the top seven of the team. Underclassmen expected to push the four seniors are Janessa Lemon, Ashley Nielson and Whitlee Manner. The missing graduating seniors that placed high on the Bobcat squad last season were Kate Lemon, Emma Cromar and Mykala Wright. Graduates missing from the boys’ roster are Stephan Stutz, Brandon Lemon, Everett Slagle, Matt Fluckiger, Kimball Allowitz and Hunter Manner, who were six of the Bobcats’ top seven who went to state. That leaves Spencer Stutz as the only returning boy with state competition experience as a sophomore. As a sophomore Spencer led the team most of last season because his older brother was injured, and he should be in the top two or three in district this year. “Last season at the beginning it didn’t look like the boys would do well, but about mid-season they really became jelled as a team, and hopefully that will happen again this year,” Barrus said. “Once again we have a group of runners that could respond well and could be there again.” Behind Stutz are sophomore Chance Sleight and senior Jackson Snell followed by seniors Bennett Baiamonte, Solomon Cluff, Tyler Cochran, Kade Codfrey and Aaron Saunders. Battling them for the top seven varsity spots will be junior Austin Morris, sophomores Michael Brugger and Matt Butler along with freshmen Landen Garner and Morgan Crawford. Madison’s first action will be at the Rexburg Rapids in the annual Madison Dash and Splash on Aug. 25 that will also feature junior high and little league teams. Roster was unavailable.

Madison volleyball loaded with talent Bill Schiess
SJ sports writer
Placing second in district and third in state last year, the Madison volleyball team are welcoming both old and new talent in hopes of repeating a very successful season. Gone to compete at the college level are Journee Sutton and Madi Day, but returning are some powerful, talented players. “Hannah Wilson is powerful, Lexi Garner can control the middle of the net, and Chloe Miller is probably the best defensive setter in the area,” said a smiling head coach, Meranda Maestas, of the Bobcats. “They and the other seniors and juniors know what success feels like and provide great leadership for our team.” Missing from the squad will be junior Danni Weaver, who tore her ACL and has been lost for the entire season, and Garner will sit out the first few games with a leg injury, but Maestas wants her back healthy for the second half of the season. Seniors joining Hannah Wilson on the team are Brenna Adams and Hali Rasmussen. With Garner and Miller the only juniors, sophomores Lexi Weaver, Macie Gordon and Baylee Peterson and freshman Charity Wilson will round out the team. Charity Wilson and Gordon will probably start with the other positions still up for grabs, as some players will be position specialists. The key for the Bobcats to be successful will be the passing of the ball to the spikers at the net. Hannah Wilson has been moved from the right side to the outside hitter, with Garner on the inside with her blocking abilities. “Bonneville will be favored to take district and state again as they only graduated two players, but we will see how they play without them,” Maestas said. “We should be right there with them followed by Hillcrest.” Madison will open their season on Aug. 23 by playing Idaho Falls and Skyline in a doubleheader at Rigby followed by a conference match with Rigby at Madison on Aug. 30.

Karson Hastings, of Madison, uses his speed to gain yardage against Blackfoot at the Bobcats’ homecoming win last season.
Looking at the football players that graduated last spring, several of them having signed letters of intent to play college ball, one would think that this year would be a building year — not so, according to head coach Mitch Buck. “We will be favored in the conference, and we are going to win district,” Buck recently predicted. “We graduated all but one of our starting defense, but we have some very athletic kids returning that will do a great job.” Gone from the defense are Zeke Birch, Hayden Leatham, David Rowe, Isaac Daybell, Taylor Martindale, Cameron White, Kyler Clark and Dawson Pocock. The only returning starter will be Coleman Cordero at his defensive back position. “I don’t like to dwell on who is gone, but who are here to fill the positions and do a good job for us,” Buck said. With only 51 seniors and juniors out
for the team this year, several of the players will have to play both ways. Karson Hastings, Austin Burrell and Blake Moseley are just some that will be seen on both defense and offense. Anchoring the defensive line will probably be Hunter Proctor, Fisher Neff, Joe Dougherty and Tyrel Clark. Two new players that have impressed Buck are Nathan Sanders and Dallin Whitehead, who may play on the D-line. Seeing a lot of action at the linebacker and defensive back positions will be Spencer Evans, Parker Weber, Brigham Castillow, James Maguire, Mason McWhorter, Devin Smith, Burrell, Cordero and Hastings. The offense will be very fast and athletic, but the Bobcats will miss Mason Downey, Kolby Mumm, Jackson Hodges, Ryan Perkes, QB Devin Berry, kicker Robbie Berrett and Leatham. Returning are Moseley, Hastings, Burrell and Malachi Valora, all fast players who saw action on the 8-3 team last season. “We will start Jordan Porter at quarterback, and he is extremely talented, “Buck said. “He has excellent feet, can throw the ball very well. We will spread the offense and run Jordan a lot along with our other speed people.” Madison will also showcase one of the top kickers in the state in Chris Edstrom, and he will also do the punting chores as Buck looks for a punter. At tight end Dougherty will be a handful as he returns to the squad after a year’s absence. “Our offensive line will be the big question for us, as the only two we really have positioned is Luke Hammer at center and Tre Clark as a lineman,” said Buck. “But I like our chances, as our athleticism will hopefully defeat the brawn of the other teams. Rigby, Highland and Hillcrest should be our equals, and in 12 weeks we will know who is the best.” Madison will open the 2017 season on Aug. 25 when they host Lake City from northern Idaho.

eSugar girls’ soccer primed for special season Koster Kennard
sjsports@uvsj.com
Koster Kennard/Standard Journal
Sophomore Lily Parker takes control of the ball during an early season game against Snake River.
Despite losing two seniors to graduation, this year’s Sugar-Salem girls’ soccer team is ready to have a special season. “We lost two very skilled seniors this past year in Claire Redd and Ashlyn Puzey,” said head coach Scott Terry. “Claire was always an anchor for us on defense, and Ashlyn was an exceptional goalie and goal-scoring threat depending on the position that she played.” Terry said it’s difficult to replace players like Redd and Puzey but his team is doing a good job so far. One player who is likely to be key in Sugar’s success is senior Bethany Schulthies. Last year Schulthies broke her collarbone early in the season. “(Schulthies) has worked very hard in her rehab and will be a force for us this year as a forward,” Terry said. Terry said his sophomores and freshmen will give the team great depth this season. “Sunny Bennion, in particular, is going to play a big role in our back
line of defense as a freshman,” Terry said. Terry said people will see the progress his team has made in the offseason when his players step onto the soccer field. “Each girl has given a lot of their time during the offseason to improve their skills and fitness,” Terry said. “I am excited to see all of the sacrifices pay off.” Terry said his girls will be intensely focused on scoring every game. “Our team will have a very dynamic offense with lots of scoring options,” said Terry. “We have many players that are hungry to score and put lots of pressure on their opponent.” One thing the team is still improving is their ability to shift defensively. As a team, the lady Diggers’ goal is to “love (their) teammates.” “This is no ordinary Sugar-Salem girls’ soccer team,” Terry said. “This team has that special something that every team dreams of having. I would look for this team to not only qualify for state this year but to make some noise when they get there.”

Five experienced seniors look to lead Sugar-Salem to state title Koster Kennard sjsports@uvsj.com
Koster KennarD/stanDarD Journal
Senior Logan Tingey, left, pushes the ball up the field at an early season game.
Coach Oscar Bustos’ senior players often have only spent a year or two on the boys’ soccer team but this year’s team is different; this year’s team has five seniors who have played all four years, and they all played in the championship game four years ago. The team has made the state playoffs each of the last four years but has narrowly lost each time. Last season they lost to eventual state champion Teton in the district championship on PKs. Teton was a team Sugar had beaten earlier in the season. “Our main goal this year is to go to state and to win it all,” Bustos said. Bustos said that all five of his fouryear-starting seniors are good players. “We’re going to have a good year regardless of what happens during the
season,” Bustos said. Sugar’s seniors this year are different from last year’s seniors, who each only played a year or two on the team. Seniors Logan Tingey and Ace Christensen look to lead the team in scoring. Dan Shirley is another senior who looks to be a leader on the back end of the Diggers’ defense. In addition to his seniors Bustos also has junior Spencer Dayley and

sophomore Jordan Dayley, who played well as underclassmen last season. The team is also returning keeper Rylan Bean, who started for the team as a freshman last season. Bustos reiterated that the team’s goal is to win state. “We want to go back again with more experience,” Bustos said.” We expect to go to state and try to win it all.

Sugar cross-country driven by goal to finish 1, 2, 3 in state meet Koster Kennard sjsports@uvsj.com
Sugar-Salem’s boys cross-country team is two-time reigning state champs, but this year they could be even better. Last season then-junior Braden Anderson was state runner-up while Cooper Williams finished fourth and Taylor Hill finished fifth. This year the three have made it their goal to take the top three spots when the state tournament rolls around. “We’ve talked about it already,” said head coach Brett Hill. “We’ve set the goal. They really feel like they can go one, two, three, and they don’t care how the order goes. They just want to go one, two, three. Each of them is going to compete hard to win it, but their goal is to get together and run away from the field and sweep those top spots.” Merrell Ford, Jarom Merrill and Jared Williams are three other seniors who are likely to be key contributors. Hill also expects freshmen Parker Galbriath and Cody Dalling to contribute on the varsity team. “On the boys side we look very strong,” Hill said. “We hope to repeat as district and state champions.” The girls team excelled last year as
well, finishing second at state. Their team lost state runner-up and district champion Shaylee Hill to graduation as a well as a key contributor in Ashley Willis, but the team is favored along with Shelley High to win the state title. Serenity Price finished fifth in last year’s state meet and has a shot at winning it all this year. Jade Jackson is a new face to the cross-country program who was second place in Sugar’s team time trial. Coach Hill thinks she can be a top 10 finisher. She also won the high jump competition in last year’s state track meet. Megan Galbraith and Brooke Moser are two seniors who Hill said will provide great leadership. Sisters Carly and Chesney Anderson moved into the school district over the summer. Last season Carly placed 20th in the state cross country final for Shepherd High School in Montana. Kia Anderson, Kaya Brewer, Marley Harrison and Suzy Galbraith are sophomores who look to contribute. “The outlook for both these teams is very good,” said Hill. “We return a good nucleus on both sides. Both have chances to win state titles.” Roster was unavailable.

Reigning Champs reloaded and ready to repeat Koster Kennard sjsports@uvsj.com
The Sugar-Salem volleyball team won last year’s 3A state title. This year, with eight starters returning, they believe they can do it again. “I think the first thing that separates them (from past teams) is their confidence,” said head coach Cami Dodson. “They set out for so long to achieve that ultimate goal of winning a state championship, and now they know how hard of work it took to get there, but they also know it’s possible.” Winning the title isn’t the team’s only goal. “They have a big goal of earning every point, earning everything that they get, working hard and working together,” Dodson said. Though the team won the state championship, their preseason hasn’t been without trial. “Starting out we suffered from injuries over the summer, and so we so didn’t get as much court time as we usually get heading into the season, Dodson said. So even though we brought back eight, some are playing in different positions, and then we have a few new ones on (the court).” Injuries have prevented the team from jelling on the court like they usually do by this time of year. “I think we need to work on getting to know one another, trusting each other, knowing each other’s strengths and what they add to the court,” Dodson said. “That will probably be something that they’re really going to have to focus on and work on.” One of Sugar’s strengths last year was their long front line. “We brought back a ton of height, so we’re still really tall, but we have a talented defense behind that height,” Dodson said. “I think we’re going to be very strong at the net and very scrappy behind the box.” Libero Amanda Rudd and right side hitter Addi Gehmlich were key contributors to last year’s team. Rudd left a legacy by mentoring Libero Kayla Luke, who brings a similar mentality to Rudd. Some new players to watch include Ashley Bingham, Mariah Dunn and Celina Adams. Bingham is a middle blocker. “(Bingham’s) long, long, long. She’s really embracing play at the net.

She’s loving to block up. She’s going to be fun to see,” Dodson said. Dunn is a strong player who loves to hit the ball with force. She will be playing as an outside hitter. Adams will play as a right side hitter. “Selena Adams is going to replace our right side, and I think she’ll be one to watch out for. She’s extremely court smart, and she loves to swing on the ball,” Dodson said. Dodson likes her team’s attitude for the upcoming season. “I’m really excited about their vision of what they need to do. They’re humble enough to know what their strengths are and what their weaknesses are, and so they’re willing to work together to be unified toward our goal,” Dodson said. Sugar Hopes to overcome inexperience with hard work Koster Kennard sjsports@uvsj.com
Sugar-Salem High School’s football team lost 15 players to graduation last season, but head coach Tyler Richins thinks this year’s team is one of the hardest-working teams he’s coached. “We’re very youthful, but we’re also a pretty tenacious team when it comes to our work ethic and desire to win and those types of things,” Richins said. “It’ll be interesting to see how it all comes together.” One of last year’s seniors that Sugar-Salem will particularly miss is running back Jaron Rose. “(Rose) was kind of our workhorse running back last year,” Richins said. “He had close to 1,000 yards rushing and was really a dynamic type of kid that you could give the ball to and

know he’s going to make something happen. So missing him is going to be tough.” The team also lost Marcus Maxwell, Austin Williams and Connor Stanford from their offensive and defensive lines. “We’re youthful up front,” Richins said. “Obviously losing that experience hurts us a little bit, but these kids are hungry to make names for themselves and show that they can take over games.” The team only has seven or eight seniors returning, but those seniors are dedicated. Senior Dylan Pope is a three-year starter at safety and also plays running back. In addition, he ran in the state 100-meter finals in track and field. Senior defensive back and wide receiver Jacob Christensen also ran
in the state 100-meter finals. “You’ve got two kids who are running about an 11.3 100-meter dash, said Richins. “That’s pretty nice, as a coach, to have that kind of speed coming back.” Junior Hayden Crapo will be the starting quarterback for the Diggers. “(Crapo’s) spent a lot of time this offseason trying to grow as a quarterback, and we’re excited to see him showcase that talent and hard work,” Richins said. Junior Kyle Ostermiller is bruising running back and also plays defensive end. He first started at running back when he was a freshman. One new starter along the offensive and defensive lines is Kenny Copley, who won the state wrestling tournament in his weight class. “All in all, we’re just excited for the youth,” Richins said. “They’re all

fully capable, but they’re young. So that’s going to be a little bit of a work in progress.” Richins said he’s trying to help his team understand that the season is a process and that they will fail at some point but will just need to pick themselves up and learn from their mistakes. “This is the youngest team in a long time for Sugar, and a lot of people are kind of worried about, ‘Oh, this year’s going to be rough, but they’re going to be really good next year,’” said Richins. “That’s not how we look at it. We look to be successful this year. We’re happy with the young kids that we have coming up. They’re players that are going to make an impact now, and we hope to surprise some people.” ROSTER NAME Hayden Crapo Curtis Drake Grady Rasmussen Jacob Christensen John Lewis Hadley Miller Tanner Harris Sam Parkinson Riley Thurber Simeon Rydalch Ethan Warner Wyatt Crapo Kyle Ostermiller Kyler Handy Chandler Pincock Peter Pickering Jarren Jackson Luke Terry Browning Bennion Cole Mace Dylan Pope Mason Balzen Brady Blaser Gabe Weeks Westin Bratt Kael Wasden Justus Rammell Ethan Williams Wolf Bennion Kody Leavitt Hayden Winward Kenneth Copley

South Fremont boys’ soccer: South Fremont girls team mature and ready to compete young but looking to build Koster Kennard
sjsports@uvsj.com
South Fremont soccer is bringing back 16 of 18 players from last year’s 10-4-1 team. “Last year my team was mostly freshmen, and this year we have more upperclassmen than we do freshmen,” said South Fremont head coach Joanna Bambo.”That’s a little bit exciting because we’ve got more experience on the team.” Bambo said this year’s team looks to be better than last year’s. “We’ve had a lot of growth that happened last year, and I can already see it carrying over to this year, and the girls — they’re really just wanting to play better this year,” Bambo said. Last year’s team graduated two seniors: Taliya Lopez and Angelica Chavez. Swiss Foreign exchange student Alessia Hurlimann is slated to suit up for the Cougars this season. This will be the first year Bambo has had a foreign exchange student on her team. Bambo says her players have chemistry on and off the field. “We have a group of girls who are willing to work hard together,” Bambo said. “Sometimes when you get teenage girls together it gets kind of hard to get them all to work together and be OK with what we’re doing on the field. But they’ve all got really good relationships with each other.” Though they’re an experienced team that gets along well, there are still a few things the team can work
on. “We’re still trying to figure out how every player is connected on the field, so we’re figuring out how the ball moves on the field,” Bambo said. “We’re definitely progressing in it but definitely still working on it.” Bambo said the girls she coaches teach her while she teaches them. “I am very privileged to work with this group of girls,” Bambo said. “They are girls that I learn from every day, and they work hard to do what they need to be successful not only when they come and play on the soccer field but in their everyday lives.” ROSTER South Fremont girls’ soccer Grade Player 9 Jada Perkins 9 Lillie Smith 9 Shaylee Smith 9 Sierra Bitter 9 Kinnley Lasson 9 Gisselle Alvarado 9 Kaylynn Knowles 10 Kelsi Lasson 10 Hailey linger 10 Emma Dunster 10 Marissa Bischoff 11 Chanamy Eckman 11 Kaelyn Clark 11 Jodi Lusk 11 Reina Matsumura 11 Rachel Murri 11 Hope Birch 11 Alessia Hurlaminn 12 Mikayla Argueta 12 Kourtney Hennefer

This year’s South Fremont boys’ soccer team is an inexperienced one with a heavy dose of sophomores and new players. “We’re real young,” said Blair. “I’ve got a ton of sophomores.” Head coach Shayn Blair appreciates what his upperclassmen bring to the table. “It’s always good to have seniors, but we’re young, and it shows,” Blair said. “I’ve had kids move out. ... We had our defense all set, and then they left, so that kind of hurt us a little bit. South Fremont lost several seniors from last year’s squad, including leading scorer Javier Arvayo. Other key departures included Tyler Murri, Jarrett Stoddard and Juan Tinajero. “(Javier) didn’t get player of the year, but he probably should have,” Blair said. “He scored a lot of goals for

ctor South Fremont cross-country has ead-more runners than they have had in either of head coach Crissy Kerbs’ ertofirst two seasons, but the team is a ctoryoung as ever with several freshmen and sophomores. urri “We’re definitely excited to have pho-more kids,” said Kerbs. “We have more high school kids out this year. theWe’re going to be really young. We have a lot of freshmen coming in. They’re young kids, but when they’re young they’re eager to want to get after it and compete and learn.” Sophomore Emma Dunster and junior Carly Hikida both did well 2 in the state cross-country meet last season and are expected to lead the 2 cougars this season. 2 Juniors Reina Matsumura and 2 Paige Fullmer are a couple of run2 ners coach Kerbs expects to excel this 1 season. 1 South Fremont’s boys are even 1 more inexperienced than their girls. 1 “Our boys we’re going to be build1 ing,” Kerbs said. “We’re kind of cre1 ating and still waiting to see who’s going to step up and run strong for 0 us.” 0 Kerbs is excited to see what her 0 new runners can do. 0 “They’re all very inexperienced, 0 very unfamiliar with the sport and 0 unfamiliar with the training, Kerbs 0 said. “It’s going to be exciting to see 0 what they do with it.” 0 Kerbs’ team last year only had a couple seniors. 0 “We’re not really losing anything. 0 That’s why I say we’re still young,” Kerbs said. “We have runners coming back with experience as well as bringing in new ones.” Though Kerbs’ team lacks experience, they have good attitudes, and they are working hard. “These are probably the most positive, most coachable kids we’ve had yet,” Kerbs said. “They just want to learn. They’ll do and go with whatever you have lined up for them.” Kerbs said she doesn’t want her girls to be thinking about state and district competitions all year long: She wants them to think about the next meet. “We’re definitely going to be focusing this year on just one meet at a time,” Kerbs said. “I just want them

This year’s staff wants to make sure crosscountry is recognized in the area as a competitive sport. “I would definitely say that we want to bring attention and start building a running community in St. Anthony, which hasn’t quite been a focal point for a lot of people, and so our goal as coaches is to just continue to bring exposure.” Kerbs believes she’s got the personnel to bring more exposure to the sport, and she’s excited about her team. “They’re good kids,” Kerbs said. “They work hard, and I think they’re going to show everybody that crosscountry is an amazing competitive sport to be part of.”

New coach looks to lead South Fremont volleyball through tough division Koster Kennard sjsports@uvsj.com
After a year coaching local seventh graders followed by a year on the freshman coaching staff, Xavier Miranda is getting his shot to coach South Fremont’s varsity volleyball team as he replaces Britta Rhodehouse, who moved to Texas with her family. Miranda is inheriting a team that returns six players from last year’s varsity team. Last year South Fremont lost in districts to the eventual state champions. “We just couldn’t get through districts last year,” Miranda said. “I think that’s just because we’ve never had a team make it that far. They hadn’t learned how to be consistent.”

South Fremont expects big season from returning stars Koster Kennard sjsports@uvsj.com
South Fremont’s skill player and offensive line position groups have starkly contrasting levels of experience. The Cougars return four starters at running back, quarterback and wide receiver while replacing three starters along their offensive line. “Our quarterback, running back and a couple of wide receivers are all back from last year,” said South Fremont head coach Chad Hill, “so we’re pretty excited about what we have returning there and hope to distribute the ball around quite a bit to those different guys we have.” Hill expects returning starters Reece Yancey (RB) and Steven Zundel (WR) to have big years for the cougars. Running back Daniel Coverley has also impressed him. Drew Stoddard (OL, ILB), James Bagley (OL,
DL), Bryson Stoddard (DB, WR) and 6’6” all-state wide receiver/defensive end Blake Bartschi all filled key roles on last year’s team. Though South Fremont’s offensive line is inexperienced, Hill says they’ve impressed him this summer. German Gonzalez, Jordan Dodge and Edwin Smith are slotted to fill the starting offensive line spots that last year’s seniors left vacant. “I think we’ve got the guys to (succeed),” Hill said. “It’s just putting guys in the right spot and getting that O-line to jell a little bit is kind of what we hope we can work on.” With so many weapons returning, Hill expects the Cougars’ passing attack to be prolific, but the run game might take a little time to develop. “What we want to work on a little bit is probably our O-line and our running game,” said Hill. “We have to be able to establish that and make sure we

can still run the ball when we need to.” Hill’s challenge to his team this year is to be great at everything they do. “If we’re going to do something we want to put our best effort forward and try to be great in everything we do,” said Hill. “Don’t just go through the motions. Put everything we have into it.” Head Coach: Chad Hill Assistant Coaches: Rod Coverley, Zach Goulding, Brandon Vining, Ryon Pope, Micah Pope Ben Hildebrand,Brandon Bair, Cody Miller,Ryan Erickson, Charles Waite, Jake Humphries, Justin Jicha Principal: Larry Bennett Athletic Director: Chris Tucker
