WEST ALABAMA VOLLEYBALL
Academic excellence, 41 National Championships and a leadership role in the NCAA’s Division II make the Gulf South Conference (GSC) something special. As a charter member of D-II, the league’s 15 universities in six southeastern states enter the 37th year of setting the standards nationally, always breaking new ground. In the summer of 1970, six college presidents met to talk about athletics; when the meeting ended, a new league emerged—the Mid-South Conference—started by, and to this day run by, the CEOs, the first in NCAA history. To this day, it is that CEOcontrol and involvement that makes the league work and its 14 championships (football; men’s & women’s cross country and soccer; volleyball, men’s & women’s basketball, tennis and golf; softball and baseball) so bitterly contested. From that point forward, the Gulf South Conference has been giant steps ahead of the D-II pack. Dating back to 1997, the league has found neutral sites paying sizeable guarantees for most of its team championships. NCAA Conventions regularly feature GSC-proposed or inspired legislation. No one wins more regionals or earns more NCAA post-season bids. In 2004, the league purchased its own new construction office space. But the crowning moment came last year, when the GSC debuted its highly successful “GSC-TV Live” package of nine football games and its basketball finals. Add to that its web-TV show, “GSC Sports Weekly,” and you can see why 2005-06 was so special and why 2006-07 should be even better. We take pride in our 41 National Team Championships in 12 sports and more than 100 regional titles, especially because there is no sacrifice on the academic side, where GSC student-athletes regularly earn Academic All-America. The Conference added one more National Title to its resume in 2005-06 when Valdosta State captured its first-ever NCAA Men’s Tennis Crown, marking the third consecutive GSC National Men’s Tennis Championship (West Florida “back-to-backed” (deleted words, added quotes) in 2004 and 2005). Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State were the charter members who launched the league. Scheduling problems for the 1970-71 ac-

ademic year limited the GSC to football, won by Jacksonville State. In 1971, the addition of Southeast Louisiana (SELA) and Nichols State increased the membership to eight. The league opened an office in Hammond, LA, changed its name to the Gulf South Conference and began championships in nine men’s sports. Mississippi College and Northwestern LouiNathan N. Salant siana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) Commissioner joined in 1972 and two years later, NELA left for Division I with SELA and Nicholls State following in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the CEOs admitted Valdosta State, followed by West Georgia (1983). In 1991, TennesseeMartin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the beginning of an expansion resulting in ten new members: Eric SanInocencio Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); AlabamaVB Media Relations Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season, decreasing the membership to 17. The Conference decreased to 15 teams in 2006-07 when Central Arkansas moved to Division I and Lincoln Memorial moved to the South Atlantic Conference. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC office to Birmingham. The current Commissioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, has been in office since October, 1992. Bibb Graves Hall
The University of West Alabama is a fully accredited state institution with a nationwide reputation for its outstanding student body and faculty members. West Alabama is small enough that the students get to know almost everyone on campus, and guests are greeted with a friendly “Hello” from passing faculty and students. The University was founded in 1835 as a female academy, and during the late 19th and early 20th centuries was under the leadership of the colorful Miss Julia Tutwiler. Through the efforts of Miss Tutwiler, this institution became one of the most outstanding teacher colleges in the South. The University is located in Livingston, Alabama, the county seat of Sumter County, on United States Highway 11, Alabama Highway 28, and Interstate 20/59. It is 116 miles southwest of Birmingham, 130 miles west of Montgomery, and 37 miles east of Meridian, Mississippi. Although the original school site covered only seven acres, the facilities have grown, and today the campus sprawls over 574 acres, with beautiful rolling hills, woods, and a 54-acre lake. An old covered bridge, located near the George C. Wallace Union Building, reflects the mood and character of this easy, quiet, and friendly part of the state. The University of West Alabama is governed by a Board of Trustees appointed by the Governor of Alabama. While recognizing a special obligation to the educational, economic, and cultural life of the community and region where it is located, the University welcomes students from more distant locales. The University is comprised of the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Education, the College of Business, the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the Division of Nursing, and the School of Graduate Studies. It offers the Associate in Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master
of Arts in Teaching, Master of Education and Master of Science in Continuing Education degrees. Additionally, the University’s College of Education, College of Business, and Division of Nursing are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, The Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, and the National League of Nursing, respectively. The University’s accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools gives regional and national recognition to credits and degrees earned at the University. The student body of some 4,888 comes from Alabama and many other states. Of the teaching faculty, well over 50 percent hold earned doctorates and more than 65 percent have at least one year of education beyond the master’s degree.

Dr. E. J. Brophy Director of Athletics
Dr. E. J. Brophy enters his fourth year as Director of Athletics at
the University of West Alabama after serving as Assistant Athletic Director for External Affairs at the University of Alabama at Birmingham from March 2005 through May 2006. Brophy, who has nearly 17 years of experience as a professional athlete, collegiate coach and university athletic administrator, joined the UAB athletic department in January 2003 as Assistant Director of Athletic Development. A Montgomery, Ala., native, Brophy was responsible for athletic fund-raising, day-to-day operations of the Blazer Club scholarship organization, game-day hospitality for donors at Blazer football and basketball games and various other duties. In March, 2005, Brophy was named Assistant Athletic Director for External Affairs and continued coordinating the Blazer Club scholarship fund and all basketball and football priority seating. After an all-conference baseball career at UAB from 1989-1992, Brophy was drafted as a 37th-round selection by the Philadelphia Phillies and spent four seasons in their minor league system, reaching the Triple-A level in 1995. At the conclusion of his playing career, Brophy was named assistant baseball coach at Samford University in 1996 and held the same post at the University of Montevallo in 1998. He was the head baseball coach at Wallace Community College in Selma, Ala., from August 1998 until January 2003. In recognition of gaining his 100th collegiate coaching victory in 2002, he was named to the Alabama and American Baseball Coaches Century Club. Brophy graduated from UAB in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education, and also earned a Master of Arts degree in Physical Education from UAB in 1998. He received a PhD from UAB in Educational Leadership in August 2009.
Brophy has led the charge in improving UWA’s athletics facilities, including renovations to Tiger Football Stadium, the UWA Football Practice Facility, the Tartt Baseball Complex, Pruitt Gymnasium and the UWA Softball Facility. These upgrades have included the erection of a new softball lockerroom, the creation of the Cross Country Clubhouse and upgrades to lockerrooms for several sports such as football, men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball. Brophy also supervised the completion and final funding for the 41,000 square foot Dora Dahlberg Beard Indoor Practice Facility for baseball and softball. In the area of fundraising, Brophy enhanced the university’s booster club by giving it a new name – The Tiger Club – which along with a newly developed corporate sponsorship program has procured over $750,000 since its inception in 2006. Brophy also was instrumental in negotiating corporate partnerships with Coca-Cola and Adidas, as well as new radio broadcast agreements and expanding the visibility of the overall sports program. During Brophy’s tenure at UWA, the Tigers have won two Gulf South East Division baseball titles (2007, 2009), participated in two NCAA baseball regionals (2008, 2009), made the NCAA men’s tennis tournament for the first time in school history (2009) and tied the school record for softball wins (2009). Brophy has served as a member of the NCAA Division II Regional Baseball Committee since 2007, and was recently named to the NCAA Division II Basketball Committee. Brophy was also recently named to the Papa Johns.Com Bowl Committee in Birmingham, Ala. for 2009-10. Brophy is married to the former Cindy Wooten of Birmingham, Ala. They have two children: son Brooks, 10, and daughter Bailey, 7.

UWA Volleyball Participates In The Susan G. Komen Dig For The Cure
The Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to
events like the Komen Race for the Cure and Dig for the Cure, the foundation has invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill the promise of becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. The Dig for the Cure program was established in 2003 by Lisa Marston, the head volleyball coach of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Marston’s mother is a breast cancer survivor and one of many from around the world that Marston hopes to honor through the program.
UWA has designated its home match with instate rival North Alabama on Oct. 6, as the Susan G. Komen Dig For The Cure Match.
