the tigers WILL ATKINSON HEAD COACH • FIFTH YEAR AT UWA LAMBUTH UNIVERSITY, 1999

for six seasons.

Will Atkinson, enters his fifth season as head coach of the Tigers and sixth overall associated with the UWA program. Atkinson comes to West Alabama from Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn., where he served as the head softball coach

In 2011, Atkinson led the Tigers to the NCAA Division II South 2 Super Regional, the first in school history. UWA finished the season with a 38-19 record, a South 2 Regional crown, five All-Gulf South Conference members, the East Division Player of the Year in Valisha FIncher, and a final national ranking of No. 14. The 38 wins is two straight of the Tigers’ skipper. Fincher was also named to the 2011 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II All-American Team. Off the diamond, the Tigers had seven named NFCA Scholar Athlete, a pair of GSC All-Academic members, 10 Honor Roll selections and 13 named to the UWA President’s and Dean’s List. In his fours seasons at the helm in Livingston, Atkinson has compiled 147 wins at West Alabama. Atkinson picked up his 100th victory with the Tigers on April 8 of last season in a 4-0 blanking of Delta State in the Gulf South Conference Crossover. The softball team saw four players named to the All-GSC – including the program’s fifth, three-time all-conference selection in Kelli Hartley. Stephanie Beahn joined Hartley on the first team, while outfielder Lindsey Skinner and designated player Lauren Mills were tabbed to the second team. The Tiger softball team excelled in the classroom. UWA landed three members on the league’s East All-Academic Team led by 2010 All-GSC second team selection Lauren Mills. Mills finished her two-year stint in Livingston as a two-time all-conference performer. Seniors Angela Hanna and Mary Wright were also tabbed to the softball academic squad. Katie Ford also earned academic success for the softball program as she was one of 13 UWA student-athletes to be named to the 2009-10 Division II Athletics Directors Association Academic Achievement Awards list. Ford, Hartley, Mills, Wright and Ashley Frost were all named National Fastpitch Coaches Association/ Girls Got Game All-American Scholar Athetes.

In 2009, Atkinson guided the Tigers to a record-shattering season after compiling a 42-17 overall mark and their first appearance in the Gulf South Conference Tournament since the 1997 season. The 42 wins by the 2009 squad tied a school record for wins in a season. In conference play, UWA claimed 12 wins, equaling the school mark for wins against league competition. At the plate, the Tigers turned in a school-record 80 home runs which ranked third in the GSC and sixth in the NCAA. The Red and White broke RBI (384), batting average (.336) and total bases (862) record. In 2009, UWA collected a plethora of post season awards as Kelli Hartley became the school’s first All-American after earning third team honors from Daktronics. A total of six Tigers were tabbed All-GSC East in 2009, headlined by first team selections – Hartley, Ashley Edgar and Valisha Fincher. On April 7, 2009 against Stillman College, Atkinson reached the 200-career wins plateau and was recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as a member of the Easton Victory Club for reaching this milestone. Atkinson currently has 243 career wins in nine seasons. Atkinson orchestrated a 29-29 record in his first season at UWA. The 29 wins posted by the Tigers were the most in the program’s laurels since the 1997 season. The Red and White concluded the 2008 season by knocking off No. 2 Alabama in Huntsville, 6-5 at the UWA Softball Complex in Livingston. Brittany McGee tossed UWA’s first perfect game in the history of UWA Softball. The Tigers placed seven players on the All-GSC East Team in 2008. Under Atkinson’s watch, ten players have been named to the GSC Spring Academic Honor Roll, including Laura Bagwell and Aubree Hudson’s selection to the 2009 GSC All-Academic squad. Bagwell and Hudson were also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team in 2009. Coach Atkinson earned Mid-South Conference Co-Coach of the Year honors in 2005 and was recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as a member of the Easton Victory Club for reaching the 100 career win milestone during the 2005 season.

Atkinson, who works extensively with catchers and infielders, coached 31 All Mid-South Conference players, 20 Academic All Mid-South Conference players, four NAIA All-Region XI players, three Lambuth University Female Athletes of the Year (2004, 2005, 2006), one Mid-South Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Year (2006), and three NFCA Academic All-Americans during his tenure as head coach. Following a third-place finish in the NAIA Region XI playoffs as a player for the Lambuth Eagles baseball team, the Madison, Ala. native made the transition from player to coach when he accepted the second assistant position on the Lambuth baseball staff in the fall of 1997. After serving as the second assistant for two years, Atkinson was named the first assistant in 1999. During that season, Atkinson helped guide the Eagles baseball team to the NAIA Region XI Finals, and upon completion of the 2000 season was named the head softball coach at Lambuth University. He also served as the Sports Information Director for 17 intercollegiate teams at Lambuth University from 1999-2005. A 1999 graduate of Lambuth University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English, Atkinson is married to the former April Collins of Jackson, Tenn., and they have one daughter, Neely (6).
