HEAD COACH 1ST SEASON AT UWA SAM HOUSTON STATE
ASSISTANT COACH 1ST SEASON AT UWA UWA, 2009
Mike Newell enters his first season as head men’s basketball coach. Newell comes to UWA after serving in the same capacity at the University of Arkansas at Monticello for nine seasons.
Tyler Roden begins his first season as the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at the University of West Alabama after one season on the bench as Graduate Assistant for the women’s program.
Newell was hired at UAM in 2001 and his recruiting efforts brought in Billy McDaniel, who became a first-team All-American in 2003 for the Boll Weevils, the first in the school’s history and Nate Newell, his son, who earned first-team AllGSC honors in 2009. Newell built the Boll Weevils from the ground floor and led them to the Division II NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2006.
As a graduate assistant with the women’s program, Roden assisted in guiding the Tigers to an 18-9 record after an 8-19 record the previous season. During last season, he was responsible for mentoring the guards, including the program’s first NCAA All-American Mystee Dale.
Newell, who has tallied a 301-227 career record in 18 seasons, has posted seven, 20-win seasons as head coach. Newell is no stranger to winning as he won 113 games his first five seasons as a head coach, one more than the legendary John Wooden won in his first five years at Indiana State. He also guided the University of Arkansas at Little Rock to a historic upset of #10 Notre Dame in the 1986 NCAA Tournament. Newell’s first coaching stop came as an assistant at the University of Oklahoma under Billy Tubbs. While serving a brief stint as Interim Head Coach at OU, Newell guided the Sooners to a big win over UAB in the 1983 NCAA Tournament.
Prior to UWA, Roden spent a year at Buckhorn High School in Huntsville, Ala., as the assistant coach for the girls’ basketball and baseball teams. Roden is a 2009 graduate of UWA, where he earned his B.S. in Mathematics and minored in History. During his time as a student in Livingston, Roden spent a season as a member of the Tiger baseball program and two years on the men’s basketball team. Before transferring to UWA, he spent a season on the United States Naval Academy baseball team and a year at Naval Academy Prep School, where he led the team in scoring. Roden is the son of UWA women’s basketball head coach Craig Roden and Beverly Prince. He is engaged to Brandi Roe.
In Newell’s last season as an assistant at OU, the Sooners posted a 29-5 record and a No. 5 national ranking with a No. 2 seed in the West Region, along with a Big 8 Conference Championship. In 1984, he became the head coach at UALR and guided the Trojans to a 17-13 record in his first season. Newell’s teams qualified for five consecutive postseason bids, including three bids to the NCAA Tournament. His squads won three Trans-America Athletic Conference Championships and he was named TAAC Coach of the Year twice before leaving UALR for Lamar following the 1990 season. In 1990, Newell took the reigns at Lamar University and turned a seven-win team into a 16-game winner. Newell began his college playing career for Press Maravich (father of the legendary Pete Maravich) at Louisiana State. One year later, he transferred to Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Tex., where he led the 1973 Bearkats to a 28-0 record and the NAIA National Championship. In Newell’s three years as a starter at SHSU, the Bearkats were 76-13. Newell was inducted into the Bearkcat Hall of Honor in 1990. Newell received both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from Sam Houston State University.

WEST ALABAMA BASKETBALL 2011-12 Season Snapshot New Season, New Team When first-year head coach Mike Newell takes to the court for the first time in 2011, Tiger fans will not only see a new coach and staff, but UWA followers will have to quickly learn the new faces of the West Alabama roster. Simply put, it’s a new season and a new team for the Tigers heading into 2011. This will be the first year on the UWA sideline for Coach Newell, but its definitely not his first go round in college basketball. Entering his 19th season of coaching, Newell has won nearly 60 percent of his games with a 301-207 overall record. He has served on staffs at the University of Oklahoma, Arkansas-Little Rock, Lamar University, and Arkansas-Monticello. Add to his career record seven 20-win seasons and it is easy to see why fans are excited about Coach Newell and the upcoming season. “I am excited to be here at West Alabama,” Newell stated. “When you look at this season, we are going to be young and energetic, which is something I am personally excited about.” The Tigers return three players from last season in Drew Faile, Ryan Fitch and Kyle Belcher. Fitch finished last year second on the team, averaging 10.5 points per game and is likely to gain another starting role on this year’s squad.
Junior Ryan Fitch returns as the team’s leading scorer from a year ago.
“Our biggest weakness by far is experience. On the other hand, I think we have a very high talent level, and I think Ryan Fitch is a big part of that,” Newell said. UWA welcomes 10 newcomers to this year’s roster, including big names like Darrion Booker, Jared Woolfolk, Josh Spears, and Allen McGaha. These four players are likely to earn plenty of playing time this year as their coach has been impressed with their work ethic throughout the summer and early fall. “This kids have stayed on campus this summer and worked extremely hard,” said Newell. “Right now, we have six players that can run close to a five-minute mile, so they are in shape and have proved themsleves in workouts all summer.” UWA begins the season on Nov. 11, as the team travels to Niceville, Fla., to play Barry and Lynn Colleges, before taking part in the Legends Classic against teams like Oregon State, Morehead State, Princeton and Bucknell.
2011-12 UWA Legend of the Game M.K. Turk The year was 1962 in Livingston, Ala. – by any standards it was a trying time in this part of the country. At the height of civil rights battles across the South, the sleepy little town of Livingston needed something to keep its mind off of its surroundings – welcome to the stage M.K. Turk. “We did not have great teams back then, but I did have great teammates,” said the loyal Turk. After a couple of seasons playing at Copiah-Lincoln in Mississippi, Turk made his way west to play at Livingston State College, now known as the University of West Alabama. In his two-year career at LSC, Turk competed in the Alabama Collegiate Conference. According to Turk, competing in the ACC was not an easy task.
Turk dressed in LSC Red and White.
“We had some stiff competition during those days,” said Turk. “You take a look at those schools and some of them are now competing in Division I – teams like Jacksonville State and Troy.”
After several years in the coaching profession, Turk made his way to Memphis State as an assistant coach. It was his next stop at Southern Miss that would define his career. In 20 years, Turk compiled a 300-267 record, with his teams making two appearances in the NCAA Tournament, eight NIT appearances, including a 1987 NIT National Championship – probably Turk’s proudest moment as a coach. It was a defining moment in a career marked by success and competitive drive – a career that started at the University of West Alabama. “I owe a lot to that place. I will never forget my time there, and most importantly will never forget my teammates that mean so much to me.”
