UWA SOFTBALL THE GSC
Academic excellence, 43 National Championships and a leadership role in the NCAA’s Division II make the Gulf South Conference (GSC) something special. As a charter member of D-II, the league’s 14 universities in six southeastern states enters its 41st year of setting the standards nationally, always breaking new ground. In the summer of 1970, six college presidents met to talk about athletics; when the meeting ended, a new league emerged-the Mid-South Conference-started by, and to this day run by, the CEOs, the first in NCAA history. It is that CEO-control and involvement that makes the league work and its 14 championships (football; men’s & women’s cross country, men’s & women’s soccer; volleyball, men’s & women’s basketball, men’s & women’s tennis, men’s & women’s golf; softball and baseball) so bitterly contested in a collegial manner. From that point forward, the GSC has been giant steps ahead of the D-II pack. Dating back to 1997, the league has found neutral sites paying sizeable guarantees for most of its team championships. NCAA Conventions regularly feature GSC-proposed or inspired legislation. No one wins more regionals or earns more NCAA post-season bids. In 2004, the league purchased its own new construction office space. The crowning moment came in 2005-06 when the GSC debuted its highly successful “GSC-TV Live” package which included nine football games and its men’s & women’s basketball tournament finals. In 2009, the league became the first conference at any level to produce its own weekly radio show, “GSC-Radio Live.” Add to that its web-TV show, “GSC Sports Weekly,” and the broadbanding of its Volleyball, Basketball, Softball and Baseball championships, and you can see why the GSC is a Conference paving the way into the 21st century. We take pride in our 43 National Team Championships in 12 sports and more than 100 regional titles, especially because there is no sacrifice on the academic side, where GSC student-athletes regularly earn Academic All-America. Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State were the charter members. Scheduling problems for the 1970-71 academic year limited the GSC to football, won by Jacksonville State. In 1971, the addition of Southeast Louisiana (SELA) and Nichols State increased the membership to eight. The league opened an office in Hammond, LA, changed its name to the Gulf South Conference and began championships in nine men’s sports. Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) joined in 1972 and two years later, NELA left for Division I with SELA and Nicholls State following in 1979.
The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the CEOs admitted Valdosta State, followed by West Georgia (1983). In 1991, Tennessee-Martin and Troy State moved to Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members. An aggressive expansion under the guidance of new Commissioner Nate Salant resulted in 10 new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (199495); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State moved to Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College reclassified to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools entering the 1996-97 season. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season, decreasing the membership to 17. The Conference dropped to 15 teams in 2006-07 when Central Arkansas reclassified to Division I and Lincoln Memorial moved to the South Atlantic Conference. The GSC moved to its current 14-team membership in 2009-10 when Montevallo joined the Peach Belt Conference. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough brought the GSC office to Birmingham. Current Commissioner, Nate Salant began his tenure in October, 1992. He is assisted by Assistant Commissioner for Media and Public Affairs Michael Anderson and Assistant Sports Information Director Albert (A.A.) Moore and Senior Woman Administrator Andrea Anderson. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. William Cale (North Alabama). Joining him on the executive committee are Vice Chair Dr. Judy Bense (West Florida) and past-Chair Dr. Beheruz Sethna (West Georgia). The Supervisors of Officials are Jeff Roberson (Football), John Caldwell (Basketball-West Division) and Mike Murphy (Basketball-East Division).
UWA SOFTBALL WEST ALABAMA
The University of West Alabama is a fully accredited state institution with a nationwide reputation for its outstanding student body and faculty members. West Alabama is small enough that the students get to know almost everyone on campus, and guests are greeted with a friendly “Hello” from passing faculty and students. The University was founded in 1835 as a female academy, and during the late 19th and early 20th centuries was under the leadership of the colorful Miss Julia Tutwiler. Through the efforts of Miss Tutwiler, this institution became one of the most outstanding teacher colleges in the South. The University is located in Livingston, Alabama, the county seat of Sumter County, on United States Highway 11, Alabama Highway 28, and Interstate 20/59. It is 116 miles southwest of Birmingham, 130 miles west of Montgomery, and 37 miles east of Meridian, Mississippi. Although the original school site covered only seven acres, the facilities have grown, and today the campus sprawls over 574 acres, with beautiful rolling hills, woods, and a 54-acre lake. An old covered bridge, located near the George C. Wallace Union Building, reflects the mood and character of this easy, quiet, and friendly part of the state. The University of West Alabama is governed by a Board of Trustees appointed by the Governor of Alabama. While recognizing a special obligation to the educational, economic, and cultural life of the community and region where it is located, the University welcomes students from more distant locales.
The University is comprised of the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Education, the College of Business, the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the Division of Nursing, and the School of Graduate Studies. It offers the Associate in Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Education and Master of Science in Continuing Education degrees. Additionally, the University’s College of Education, College of Business, and Division of Nursing are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, The Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, and the National League of Nursing, respectively. The University’s accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools gives regional and national recognition to credits and degrees earned at the University. The student body of some 5,157 comes from Alabama and many other states. Of the teaching faculty, well over 50 percent hold earned doctorates and more than 65 percent have at least one year of education beyond the master’s degree.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to West Alabama’s regional state university. As a comprehensive state university, we offer a broad range of academic programs leading to the associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees, as well as support services to the business, government, and education communities. We also have students from throughout the United States and from many countries, creating a diverse and stimulating learning environment. There are very few universities left that can offer quality academic programs in a very personal setting at a reasonable cost. Our average class size is about twenty-three students, and our students receive advisement and counseling directly from the faculty in their major areas. Furthermore, we offer a small town setting with a secure environment, free from many of the distractions of larger cities. All of our academic colleges offer various forms of consulting and problem solving to diverse businesses and agencies within the region. Many of these programs provide our students with handson experience in the form of practica and internships, as well as providing valuable support to the community. As UWA’s president, I make it a priority to be visible on campus, and my door is always open to students. Indeed, at UWA, all employees pride themselves on placing students first. In 2002, Dr. Richard D. Holland became the tenth President of the University of West Alabama, founded in 1835. He earned his bachelor and master’s degree in Biology at the University of West Alabama and his Ph.D. in Botany at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Prior to becoming President, he served as a Professor of Biology and Dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at UWA. DR. J. BROPHY UWAE.SOFTBALL During Brophy’s tenure at UWA, the Tigers have won two Gulf South Conference East Division baseball titles (2007, 2009), participated in two NCAA baseball regionals (2008, 2009) and set the baseball season record for wins (45 - 2008). UWA baseball was also ranked in the final Top 20 polls for three straight seasons (2007, 2008, 2009). West Alabama also made the NCAA football playoffs for the first time in 34 years (2009), reached the program’s highest win total (8) since 1975 and defeated the number one football team in the country (UNA, 2009). The 2009 football Tigers also had a dramatic first round road playoff victory versus Albany State, and finished the 2009 campaign ranked 19th in the final Division II football poll. UWA made the NCAA men’s tennis tournament for the first two times in school history (2009, 2010) while setting the program record for wins 23 (2010), and also tied the school record for softball wins with 42 (2009). Additionally, the Tiger volleyball team was the last team in America to lose a match in 2007, after a stellar 18-0 start en route to a 27-6 final record and a Top 25 ranking. The 2009 volleyball squad won 30 matches, captured its first ever Gulf South Conference East Division crown and finished as the Gulf South Conference runner-up. Brophy also served as a member of the NCAA Division II Regional Baseball Committee from 2007-2010, and was a member of the NCAA Division II National Men’s Basketball Committee in 2009-2010. Brophy, who has more than 18 years of experience as a professional athlete, collegiate coach and university athletic administrator, joined the UAB athletic department in January 2003 as Assistant Director of Athletic Development. A Montgomery, Alabama, native, Brophy was responsible for athletic fundraising, day-to-day operations of the Blazer Club scholarship organization, game-day hospitality for donors at Blazer football and basketball games and various other duties. In March 2005 Brophy was named Assistant Athletic Director for External Affairs and continued heading the Blazer Club Scholarship Fund and all basketball and football priority seating.
Progress. That’s the word that best describes the UWA department of athletics since Dr. E. J. Brophy’s arrival as Director of Athletics on June 1, 2006. At UWA, Brophy oversees the institution’s 10 NCAA Division II sports that compete in the Gulf South Conference, as well as Men’s and Women’s Rodeo. Brophy enters his fifth year as Director of Athletics at the University of West Alabama after serving as Assistant Athletic Director for External Affairs at the University of Alabama at Birmingham from March 2005 through May 2006. Brophy has led the charge in improving UWA’s athletics facilities, including renovations to Tiger Stadium, the UWA Football Practice Facility, the Tartt Baseball Complex, Pruitt Gymnasium and the UWA Softball Facility. These upgrades have included the erection of a new softball lockerroom, the creation of the Cross Country Clubhouse and upgrades to lockerrooms for several sports such as football, men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball. Brophy also supervised completion and final funding for the 41,000 square foot Dora Dahlberg Beard Indoor Practice Facility for baseball and softball. New synthetic turf was also installed in Tiger Stadium in the summer of 2010. In the area of fundraising, Brophy enhanced the university’s booster club by giving it a new name – The Tiger Club – which along with a newly developed corporate sponsorship program has procured over $800,000 since its inception in 2006. Brophy also was instrumental in negotiating corporate partnerships with Coca-Cola and Adidas, as well as new radio broadcast agreements and expanding the visibility of the overall sports program.
After an all-conference baseball career at UAB from 1989-1992, Brophy was drafted as a 37th-round selection by the Philadelphia Phillies and spent four seasons in their minor league system, reaching the Triple-A level in 1995. At the conclusion of his playing career, Brophy was named assistant baseball coach at Samford University in 1996 and held the same post at the University of Montevallo in 1998. He was the head baseball coach at Wallace Community College in Selma, Alabama, from August 1998 until January 2003. In recognition of his 100th collegiate coaching victory in 2002, he was named to the Alabama and American Baseball Coaches Century Club. Brophy graduated from UAB in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. He earned his Master of Arts degree in Physical Education from UAB in 1998. He received a PhD from UAB in Educational Leadership in August 2009. Brophy is married to the former Cindy Wooten of Birmingham, Alabama. They have two children. Son Brooks, 11, and daughter Bailey, 8.

Student-athletes at UWA are first and foremost students and as such are expected to fulfill certain expectations. Among these are the following: • Earning a degree is the primary goal. • Class attendance is expected and required. • Complying with all NCAA and Gulf South Conference rules is the student-athlete’s responsibility. • Actively participating in all aspects of campus life enriches the personal development and educational experience of each student-athlete. • Academic and athletic integrity is expected. • Student-athletes are ambassadors for the University of West Alabama, the Department of Athletics, and their team. Student-athletes will be judged and received more scrutiny than other UWA students, simply because more is expected of them. Faculty, University administrators and staff know who the student-athletes are and expect them to act like reasonable and responsible people. If student-athletes cut classes, neglect assignments, are inactive in class or perform poorly on exams, they will receive special notice-because they are an athlete. The student-athlete at UWA -- by demonstrating character, intelligence, and athletic ability -- has established a tradition, which is one of the university’s greatest assets. All student-athletes are a very important part of this successful tradition and it is up to each one to carry and pass on the tradition. Student-athletes are urged to participate in campus organizations as well as student-athletic organizations. The following organizations are particularly suitable for student-athletes and all are encouraged to participate in one or more: • Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA); advisors, Gary Rundles • Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC); advisor, Janet Montgomery TIGER CLUB
JUNIOR TIGER KIDS CLUB
The success of the Tiger athletics program depends on the collective loyalty, generosity and support of UWA alumni and friends.
The purpose of the UWA Junior Tiger Kids Club is to provide enjoyment for children ages 4-12 at UWA Athletic events. The $10 membership per child includes:
The Tiger Club was established to enhance UWA’s athletic programs by providing opportunities to more than 250 studentathletes in 12 intercollegiate sports. Contributions to the Tiger Club are used to provide support to UWA’s student-athletes and give them the highest standard of training facilities and learning opportunities. Tiger Club members enjoy many benefits and privileges, but they are far outweighed by the satisfaction of supporting the educational and athletic efforts of UWA’s student-athletes.

first team selections – Hartley, Ashley Edgar and Valisha Fincher. On April 7, 2009 against Stillman College, Atkinson reached the 200-career wins plateau and was recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as a member of the Easton Victory Club for reaching this milestone. Atkinson currently has 243 career wins in nine seasons.
After serving as the second assistant for two years, Atkinson was named the first assistant in 1999. During that season, Atkinson helped guide the Eagles baseball team to the NAIA Region XI Finals, and upon completion of the 2000 season was named the head softball coach at Lambuth University. He also served as the Sports Information Director for 17 intercollegiate teams at Lambuth University from 1999-2005.
for six seasons. In his three seasons at the helm in Livingston, Atkinson has compiled 109 wins at West Alabama – including 38 wins during the 2010 campaign. Atkinson picked up his 100th victory with the Tigers on April 8 of last season in a 4-0 blanking of Delta State in the Gulf South Conference Crossover. The softball team saw four players named to the All-GSC – including the program’s fifth, three-time all-conference selection in Kelli Hartley. Stephanie Beahn joined Hartley on the first team, while outfielder Lindsey Skinner and designated player Lauren Mills were tabbed to the second team. The Tiger softball team excelled in the classroom. UWA landed three members on the league’s East All-Academic Team led by 2010 All-GSC second team selection Lauren Mills. Mills finished her two-year stint in Livingston as a two-time all-conference performer. Seniors Angela Hanna and Mary Wright were also tabbed to the softball academic squad. Katie Ford also earned academic success for the softball program as she was one of 13 UWA student-athletes to be named to the 2009-10 Division II Athletics Directors Association Academic Achievement Awards list. Ford, Hartley, Mills, Wright and Ashley Frost were all named National Fastpitch Coaches Association/ Girls Got Game All-American Scholar Athetes. In 2009, Atkinson guided the Tigers to a record-shattering season after compiling a 42-17 overall mark and their first appearance in the Gulf South Conference Tournament since the 1997 season. The 42 wins by the 2009 squad tied a school record for wins in a season. In conference play, UWA claimed 12 wins, equaling the school mark for wins against league competition. At the plate, the Tigers turned in a school-record 80 home runs which ranked third in the GSC and sixth in the NCAA. The Red and White broke RBI (384), batting average (.336) and total bases (862) record. In 2009, UWA collected a plethora of post season awards as Kelli Hartley became the school’s first All-American after earning third team honors from Daktronics. A total of six Tigers were tabbed All-GSC East in 2009, headlined by
Atkinson orchestrated a 29-29 record in his first season at UWA. The 29 wins posted by the Tigers were the most in the program’s laurels since the 1997 season. The Red and White concluded the 2008 season by knocking off No. 2 Alabama in Huntsville, 6-5 at the UWA Softball Complex in Livingston. Brittany McGee tossed UWA’s first perfect game in the history of UWA Softball. The Tigers placed seven players on the All-GSC East Team in 2008. Under Atkinson’s watch, ten players have been named to the GSC Spring Academic Honor Roll, including Laura Bagwell and Aubree Hudson’s selection to the 2009 GSC All-Academic squad. Bagwell and Hudson were also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team in 2009. Coach Atkinson earned Mid-South Conference Co-Coach of the Year honors in 2005 and was recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as a member of the Easton Victory Club for reaching the 100 career win milestone during the 2005 season.
A 1999 graduate of Lambuth University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English, Atkinson is married to the former April Collins of Jackson, Tenn., and they have one daughter, Neely (5).
