Academic excellence, 41 National Championships and a leadership role in the NCAA’s Division II make the Gulf South Conference (GSC) something special. As a charter member of D-II, the league’s 15 universities in six southeastern states enter the 37th year of setting the standards nationally, always breaking new ground. In the summer of 1970, six college presidents met to talk about athletics; when the meeting ended, a new league emerged—the Mid-South Conference—started by, and to this day run by, the CEOs, the first in NCAA history. To this day, it is that CEO-control and involvement that makes the league work and its 14 championships (football; men’s & women’s cross country and soccer; volleyball, men’s & women’s basketball, tennis and golf; softball and baseball) so bitterly contested. From that point forward, the Gulf South Conference has been giant steps ahead of the D-II pack. Dating back to 1997, the league has found neutral sites paying sizeable guarantees for most of its team championships. NCAA Conventions regularly feature GSC-proposed or -inspired legislation. No one wins more regionals or earns more NCAA post-season bids. In 2004, the league purchased its own new construction office space. But the crowning moment came last year, when the GSC debuted its highly successful “GSC-TV Live” package of nine football games and its basketball finals.
1971, the addition of Southeast Louisiana (SELA) and Nichols State increased the membership to eight. The league opened an office in Hammond, LA, changed its name to the Gulf South Conference and began championships in nine men’s sports. Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) joined in 1972 and two years later, NELA left for Division I with SELA and Nicholls State following in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the CEOs admitted Valdosta State, followed by West Georgia (1983). In 1991, Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the beginning of an expansion resulting in ten new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season, decreasing
Add to that its web-TV show, “GSC Sports Weekly,” and you can see why 2005-06 was so special and why 2006-07 should be even better. We take pride in our 41 National Team Championships in 12 sports and more than 100 regional titles, especially because there is no sacrifice on the academic side, where GSC student-athletes regularly earn Academic All-America. The Conference added one more National Title to its resume in 2005-06 when Valdosta State captured its first-ever NCAA Men’s Tennis Crown, marking the third consecutive GSC National Men’s Tennis Championship (West Florida “back-to-backed” in 2004 and 2005). Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State were the charter members who launched the league. Scheduling problems for the 1970-71 academic year limited the GSC to football, won by Jacksonville State. In
the membership to 17. The Conference decreased to 15 teams in 2006-07 when Central Arkansas moved to Division I and Lincoln Memorial moved to the South Atlantic Conference. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC office to Birmingham. The current Commissioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, has been in office since October, 1992.

The University of West Alabama is a fully accredited state institution with a nationwide reputation for its outstanding student body and faculty members. West Alabama is small enough that the students get to know almost everyone on campus, and guests are greeted with a friendly “Hello” from passing faculty and students. The University was founded in 1835 as a female academy, and during the late 19th and early 20th centuries was under the leadership of the colorful Miss Julia Tutwiler. Through the efforts of Miss Tutwiler, this institution became one of the most outstanding teacher colleges in the South. The University is located in Livingston, Alabama, the county seat of Sumter County, on United States Highway 11, Alabama Highway 28, and Interstate 20/59. It is 116 miles southwest of Birmingham, 130 miles west of Montgomery, and 37 miles east of Meridian, Mississippi. Although the original school site covered only seven acres, the facilities have grown, and today

Dr. e. j. brophy Director of Athletics • 5th Year at UWA UAB, 1995 (B.S), 1998 (M.A.), 2009 (Ph.D.) Progress. That’s the word that best describes the UWA department of athletics since Dr. E. J. Brophy’s arrival as Director of Athletics on June 1, 2006. At UWA, Brophy oversees the institution’s 10 NCAA Division II sports that compete in the Gulf South Conference, as well as Men’s and Women’s Rodeo. Brophy enters his fifth year as Director of Athletics at the Uni versity of West Alabama after serving as Assistant Athletic Director for External Affairs at the University of Alabama at Birmingham from March 2005 through May 2006. Brophy has led the charge in improving UWA’s athletics facilities, including renovations to Tiger Stadium, the UWA Football Practice Facility, the Tartt Baseball Complex, Pruitt Gymnasium and the UWA Softball Facility. These upgrades have included the erection of a new softball lockerroom, the creation of the Cross Country Clubhouse and upgrades to lockerrooms for several sports such as football, men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball. Brophy also supervised completion and final funding for the 41,000 square foot Dora Dahlberg Beard Indoor Practice Facility for baseball and softball. New synthetic turf was also installed in Tiger Stadium in the summer of 2010.
8
In the area of fundraising, Brophy enhanced the university’s booster club by giving it a new name – The Tiger Club – which along with a newly developed corporate sponsorship program has procured over $800,000 since its inception in 2006. Brophy also was instrumental in negotiating corporate partnerships with Coca-Cola and Adidas, as well as new radio broadcast agreements and expanding the visibility of the overall sports program. During Brophy’s tenure at UWA, the Tigers have won two Gulf South Conference East Division baseball titles (2007, 2009), participated in two NCAA baseball regionals (2008, 2009) and set the baseball season record for wins (45 - 2008). UWA baseball was also ranked in the final Top 20 polls for three straight seasons (2007, 2008, 2009). West Alabama also made the NCAA football playoffs for the first time in 34 years (2009), reached the program’s highest win total (8) since 1975 and defeated the number one football team in the country (UNA, 2009). The 2009 football Tigers also had a dramatic first round road playoff victory versus Albany State, and finished the 2009 campaign ranked 19th in the final Division II football poll. UWA made the NCAA men’s tennis tournament for the first two times in school history (2009, 2010) while setting the program record for wins 23 (2010), and also tied the school record for softball wins with 42 (2009). Additionally, the Tiger volleyball team was the last team in America to lose a match in 2007, after a stellar 18-0 start en route to a 27-6 final record and a Top 25 ranking. The 2009 volleyball squad won 30 matches, captured its first ever Gulf South Conference East Division crown and finished as the Gulf South Conference runner-up. Brophy also served as a member of the NCAA Division II Regional Baseball Committee from 2007-2010, and was a member of the NCAA Division II National Men’s Basketball Committee in 2009-2010. Brophy, who has more than 18 years of experience as a professional athlete, collegiate coach and university athletic administrator, joined the UAB athletic department in January 2003 as Assistant Director of Athletic Development. A Montgomery, Alabama, native, Brophy was responsible for athletic fundraising, day-to-day operations of the Blazer Club scholarship organization, game-day hospitality for donors at Blazer football and basketball games and various other duties. In March 2005 Brophy

was named Assistant Athletic Director for External Affairs and continued heading the Blazer Club Scholarship Fund and all basketball and football priority seating. After an all-conference baseball career at UAB from 19891992, Brophy was drafted as a 37th-round selection by the Philadelphia Phillies and spent four seasons in their minor league system, reaching the Triple-A level in 1995. At the conclusion of his playing career, Brophy was named assistant baseball coach at Samford University in 1996 and held the same post at the University of Montevallo in 1998. He was the head baseball coach at Wallace Community College in Selma, Alabama, from August 1998 until January 2003. In recognition of his 100th collegiate coaching victory in 2002, he was named to the Alabama and American Baseball Coaches Century Club. Brophy graduated from UAB in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. He earned his Master of Arts degree in Physical Education from UAB in 1998. He received a PhD from UAB in Educational Leadership in August 2009. Brophy is married to the former Cindy Wooten of Birmingham, Alabama. They have two children. tabitha turner Head Coach • Second Year Campbell, 2007
Second-year head coach Tabitha Turner took the University of West Alabama volleyball program to new heights in just one year in charge of the program. Turner guided the Tigers to a share of the Gulf South Conference East Division Championship after posting an 8-2 mark in the division. After being declared co-champions with West Florida, UWA made a valiant run in the GSC Tournament in Searcy, Ark., before falling in the championship match to GSC East nemesis UWF. The Red and White ousted Arkansas Tech in a five-set marathon and reached the championship match with a blanking of hostHarding. Turner’s Tigers concluded the 2009 campaign with a 30-8 overall mark. Turner was voted by her peers in the GSC East as Co-Coach of the Year in 2009. She shared the honor with North Alabama’s Stephanie Radecki. After storming on to the coaching scene in 2009, Turner was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Thirty Under 30 List this past February. The award was created in 2009 to honor thirty of the up-and-coming volleyball coaches under 30 years old in the sport at all levels of the game. A nomination period was held last fall, with the requirement that the nominee had to be younger than 30 years old in 2010. Of the thirty recipients, 19 are assistant coaches and 11 are head coaches. Nine are NCAA

Division II women’s coaches, eight are NCAA Division I women’s coaches, three are NCAA Division III women’s coaches, three coach NCAA Division I-II men, two are from Two-Year Colleges, two are club coaches and one is a high school girl’s coach. Under Turner’s watch in 2009, four Tigers were tabbed All-GSC East Division as seniors Jessica Crook, Jordan Kent and Ana Gabriela Pedrosa were named All-GSC East First Team. Sophomore Alexis McHale earned All-GSC East Second Team status. Pedrosa, Cook and McHale also excelled in the classroom, as members of the GSC Academic Honor Roll last Fall. UWA did not have to look far for a new coach after the 2008 season. Turner served as assistant coach in 2008 under Nathan Baker. In 2008, Turner was instrumental in UWA’s 22-11 season and second-straight trip to the Gulf South Conference Tournament. Turner came to the Livingston campus after serving as an assistant volleyball coach at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, N.C. The Sea Devils finished 18-5 overall and 16-4 in the Carolinas Junior College Conference in 2007. The Wilmington, N.C.-native was on the United States of America All Armed Forces women’s volleyball staff in the summer of 2008, as the USA squad competed in the 29th World Military Championships in Warendorf, Germany. The Red, White and Blue topped Canada and also stretched The Netherlands to five games. Additionally, Turner has served as a camp counselor and instructor at various volleyball camps in the state of North Carolina. Turner played collegiate volleyball career at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C., from 2003-2006. She played in 107 matches for the Orange and Black, and as a dual position player Turner tabulated over 1,000 kills in her four seasons at CU. During her sophomore campaign, Turner was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Conference Team after leading the squad in kills (421), kills per game (3.97), service aces (44) and total blocks (490.0). She received conference player of the week honors in October of 2004 and was tabbed to the North Carolina A&T Classic and Virginia Tech Classic All-Tournament Teams. She recorded double-digit kills on 20 different occasions and carded seven doubledoubles in 2004. Turner also turned in a career-best performance against Stetson with 29 kills. For her efforts as a sophomore, she was voted CU’s Most Valuable Player in 2004 and was chosen

as the Campbell University Women’s Strength and Conditioning Award recipient. Turner earned her bachelors degree from Campbell in mass communication in 2007. She is the daughter of Roy Turner, Jr., and Rhonda Turner and has one brother, Todd.
