The Univer sity of West Alabama is a fully accredited s t a te i n s t i t u t i o n w i t h a nationwide reputation for its outstanding student body and faculty members. West Alabama is small enough that the students get to know almost everyone on campus, and guests are greeted with a friendly “Hello” from passing faculty and students. The University was founded in 1835 as a female academy, and during the late 19th and early 20th centuries was under the leadership of the colorful Miss Julia Tutwiler. Through the efforts of Miss Tutwiler, this institution became one of the most outstanding teacher colleges in the South. The University is located in Livingston, Alabama, the county seat of Sumter County, on United States Highway 11, Alabama Highway 28, and Interstate 20/59. It is 116 miles southwest of Birmingham, 130 miles west of Montgomery, and 37 miles east of Meridian, Mississippi. Although the original school site covered only seven acres, the facilities have grown, and today the campus sprawls over 574 acres, with beautiful rolling hills, woods, and a 54-acre lake. An old covered bridge, located near the George C. Wallace Union Building, reflects the mood and character of this easy, quiet, and friendly part of the state. The University of West Alabama is governed by a Board of Trustees appointed by the Governor of Alabama. While recognizing a special obligation to the educational, economic, and cultural life of the community and region where it is located, the University welcomes students from more distant locales.
The University is comprised of the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Education, the College of Business, the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the Division of Nursing, and the School of Graduate Studies. It offers the Associate in Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Education and Master of Science in Continuing Education degrees. Additionally, the University’s College of Education, College of Business, and Division of Nursing are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, The Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, and the National League of Nursing, respectively. The University’s accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools gives regional and national recognition to credits and degrees earned at the University. The student body of some 5,157 comes from Alabama and many other states. Of the teaching faculty, well over 50 percent hold earned doctorates and more than 65 percent have at least one year of education beyond the master’s degree.

At UWA, Brophy oversees the institution’s 10 NCAA Division II sports that compete in the Gulf South Conference, as well as Men’s and Women’s Rodeo. Brophy enters his fourth year as Director of Athletics at the University of West Alabama after serving as Assistant Athletic Director for External Affairs at the University of Alabama at Birmingham from March 2005 through May 2006. Brophy has led the charge in improving UWA’s athletics facilities, including renovations to Tiger Football Stadium, the UWA Football Practice Facility, the Tartt Baseball Complex, Pruitt Gymnasium and the UWA Softball Facility. These upgrades have included the erection of a new softball lockerroom, the creation of the Cross Country Clubhouse and upgrades to lockerrooms for several sports such as football, men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball. Brophy also supervised completion and final funding for the 41,000 square foot Dora Dahlberg Beard Indoor Practice Facility for baseball and softball. In the area of fundraising, Brophy enhanced the university’s booster club by giving it a new name – The Tiger Club – which along with a newly developed corporate sponsorship program has procured over $750,000 since its inception in 2006. Brophy also was instrumental in negotiating corporate partnerships with Coca-Cola and Adidas, as well as new radio broadcast agreements and expanding the visibility of the overall sports program. During Brophy’s tenure at UWA, the Tigers have won two Gulf South Conference East Division baseball titles (2007, 2009), participated in two NCAA baseball regionals (2008, 2009) and tied the baseball season record for wins (45 - 2008). UWA baseball has also been ranked in the final Top 20 polls each of the past three seasons (2007, 2008, 2009). West Alabama also made the NCAA football playoffs for the first time in 34 years (2009), reached the program’s highest win total (8) since 1975 and defeated the number one football team in the country (UNA, 2009). The 2009 football Tigers also had a dramatic first round road playoff victory versus Albany State, and finished the 2009 campaign ranked 19th in the final Division II football poll. UWA made the NCAA men’s tennis tournament for the first time in school history (2009) while setting the program record for wins (18), and also tied the school record for softball wins (2009). Additionally, the Tiger volleyball team was the last team in America to lose a match in 2007, after a stellar 18-0 start en route to a 27-6 final record and a Top 25 ranking. The 2009 volleyball squad won 30 matches, captured the Gulf South Conference East Division crown and finished as the Gulf South Conference runner-up.
Brophy, who has more than 17 years of experience as a professional athlete, collegiate coach and university athletic administrator, joined the UAB athletic department in January 2003 as Assistant Director of Athletic Development. A Montgomery, Alabama, native, Brophy was responsible for athletic fundraising, day-to-day operations of the Blazer Club scholarship organization, game-day hospitality for donors at Blazer football and basketball games and various other duties. In March 2005 Brophy was named Assistant Athletic Director for External Affairs and continued heading the Blazer Club Scholarship Fund and all basketball and football priority seating. After an all-conference baseball career at UAB from 1989-1992, Brophy was drafted as a 37th-round selection by the Philadelphia Phillies and spent four seasons in their minor league system, reaching the Triple-A level in 1995. At the conclusion of his playing career, Brophy was named assistant baseball coach at Samford University in 1996 and held the same post at the University of Montevallo in 1998. He was the head baseball coach at Wallace Community College in Selma, Alabama, from August 1998 until January 2003. In recognition of his 100th collegiate coaching victory in 2002, he was named to the Alabama and American Baseball Coaches Century Clubs. Brophy graduated from UAB in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. He earned his Master of Arts degree in Physical Education from UAB in 1998. He received a PhD from UAB in Educational Leadership in August 2009. Brophy is married to the former Cindy Wooten of Birmingham, Alabama. They have two children. Son Brooks, 10, and daughter Bailey, 8.

THE WILL ATKINSON FILE PERSONAL Birthdate:
Head Coach 3rd Season • Lambuth, 1999
Hometown:
Will Atkinson, enters his third season as head coach of the Tigers and fourth overall associated with the UWA program. Atkinson comes to West Alabama from Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn., where he served as the head softball coach for six seasons. In 2009, Atkinson guided the Tigers to a record-shattering season after compiling a 42-17 overall mark and their first appearance in the Gulf South Conference Tournament since the 1997 season. The 42 wins by the 2009 squad tied a school record for wins in a season. In conference play, UWA claimed 12 wins, equaling the school mark for wins against league competition. At the plate, the Tigers turned in a school-record 80 home runs which ranked third in the GSC and sixth in the NCAA. The Red and White broke RBI (384), batting average (.336) and total bases (862) record. In 2009, UWA collected a plethora of post season awards as Kelli Hartley became the school’s first All-American after earning Third Team honors from Daktronics. A total of six Tigers were tabbed All-GSC East in 2009, headlined by First Team selections – Hartley, Ashley Edgar and Valisha Fincher. On April 7, 2009 against Stillman College, Atkinson reached the 200-career wins plateau and was recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as a member of the Easton Victory Club for reaching this milestone. Atkinson orchestrated a 29-29 record in his first season at UWA. The 29 wins posted by the Tigers were the most in the program’s laurels since the 1997 season. The Red and White concluded the 2008 season by knocking off No. 2 Alabama in Huntsville, 6-5 at the UWA Softball Complex in Livingston. Brittany McGee tossed UWA’s first perfect game in the history of UWA Softball. The Tigers placed seven players on the All-GSC East Team in 2008. Under Atkinson’s watch, ten players have been named to the GSC Spring Academic Honor Roll, including Laura Bagwell and Aubree Hudson’s selection to the 2009 GSC All-Academic squad. Bagwell and Hudson were also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team in 2009. Coach Atkinson earned Mid-South Conference Co-Coach of the Year honors in 2005 and was recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as a member of the Easton Victory Club for reaching the 100 career win milestone during the 2005 season. Atkinson, who works extensively with catchers and infielders, coached 31 All Mid-South Conference players, 20 Academic All MidSouth Conference players, four NAIA All-Region XI players, three Lambuth University Female Athletes of the Year (2004, 2005, 2006), one Mid-South Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Year (2006), and three NFCA Academic All-Americans during his tenure as head coach. Following a third-place finish in the NAIA Region XI playoffs as a player for the Lambuth Eagles baseball team, the Madison, Ala. native made the transition from player to coach when he accepted the second assistant position on the Lambuth baseball staff in the fall of 1997. After serving as the second assistant for two years, Atkinson was named the first assistant in 1999. During that season, Atkinson helped guide the Eagles baseball team to the NAIA Region XI Finals, and upon completion of the 2000 season was named the head softball coach at Lambuth University. He also served as the Sports Information Director for 17 intercollegiate teams at Lambuth University from 1999-2005. A 1999 graduate of Lambuth University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English, Atkinson is married to the former April Collins of Jackson, Tenn., and they have one daughter, Neely (4).

2010 tiger softball
We have joined institutions across 22 conferences and independents in committing to safe, fun, and entertaining sporting experiences on Division II campuses. We have signed the pledge to create and continue family-friendly experiences for everyone.
NCAA Division II presidents and chancellors affirm that athletics events should reflect the values of higher education and the mission of each institution. Division II emphasizes learning and development in a personal setting. As chancellors and presidents, we are concerned about the uncivil behavior exhibited at college athletics contests and thereby pledge to work together to make respectful, family-friendly events a standard of the Division II experience.

UWA Softball Facilities
2010 tiger softball Dora Dahlberg Beard Indoor Practice Facility What started as a dream has now become reality. On April 19, 2008 the state-of-the-art, 41,000 square foot training center located at UWA’s Tartt Baseball Field was named the Dora Dahlberg Beard Indoor Practice Facility. The naming opportunity was made possible through kind contributions to the university by Mrs. Beard’s family. “We greatly appreciate Anthony Beard (son) and Paul Beard (husband) for their kind contributions and for allowing us to honor Mrs. Beard in such a special way” said UWA Director of Athletics Dr. E. J. Brophy. “She had a very special place in her heart for our university and Tiger Athletics, and we take great pride in having her name adorn the best indoor practice facility for baseball and softball in the state of Alabama”. The type of facility looked upon with envy by even the largest Division I schools, the Dora Dahlberg Beard Indoor Practice Facility provides world class training opportunities for all UWA baseball and softball student-athletes, as well as exterior concession and restroom facilities for Tiger baseball fans enjoying UWA’s famous “outfield decks” on gamedays. The late Mrs. Beard’s affinity with UWA included the fact that her daughter, Stephanie Beard Tesney, is a graduate of the university. Her nephew, Rob Dahlberg, was a standout baseball player for the Tigers and her niece, Kate Dahlberg, is a junior at the university this fall.
UWA Softball Facilities Nestled neatly on the “UWA Loop” in the heart of West Alabama’s spacious campus, the UWA softball complex has served as the perfect setting for Tiger softball since 1998. With four softball diamonds, two multipurpose athletic fields and a brand new, state-of-the-art field lighting system, UWA’s beacon of softball is among the most accommodating Division II facilities in the South today. It’s groundwork was laid in 1997, just in time for its dedication and inagural softball game in the spring of 1998. Since then, the Complex has blossomed with numerous improvements and modifications including a centrally located press box, home locker room and concession facilities, a full-size batting cage and underground sprinklers. Signs honoring UWA’s championship teams line the outfield wall. Today, the UWA Softball Complex hosts countless intramural athletic events in addition to its annual slate of top-notch NCAA softball. With its fan-friendly atmosphere and convenient location, Tiger softball’s”home field” is sure to remain a key part of campus life for years to come. An addition to the UWA Softball Complex was completed prior to the start of the 2007 campaign was a locker room for the Tigers. The 600-square foot facility is adjacent to the UWA dugout on the first base side of the complex. The clubhouse features lockers for each player and coaches along with a team area with couches and a flat screen television and entertainment center Flags representing the GSC East were added prior to the 2008 season.
