2008 United Way Board of Directors is our new call to action!

For the community, it means to give, advocate, and volunteer. For United Way, it means to focus on the issues of education, income, and health which affect the lives of local children, families, and seniors. Our vision is a community in which all of us, together, LIVE UNITED. In 2008 we partnered with 20 member agencies, school districts, faithbased and other community organizations that put LIVE UNITED into practice each day of the year. Collectively we and our partners helped thousands of area youth and families to improve their own lives. We thank all of our community partners for their extraordinary service. In 2009, the United Way will continue to provide leadership on key social issues in partnership with our outstanding member agencies and others. Over 150 volunteers donated their time and talents directly to the United Way in 2008. In addition, hundreds of volunteers in local companies coordinated their United Way campaigns and processed contributions. We appreciate all of our dedicated volunteers who LIVE UNITED for the betterment of their community through our local United Way. Thank you to the thousands of donors who give to the annual United Way campaign. Your generous contributions make these services possible. We are honored to work with all of you to make Southern Chautauqua County a better, more caring place to live for all of us and for our neighbors.

Advancing the COMMON GOOD In 2008, United Way put over $1.1-million in direct program funding back into the community to advance education, income, and health-related services through member agencies, and through United Way’s own programs. The Relief Zone in Frewsburg was added to our list of partner agencies that receive annual funding from the United Way. In addition, the Dropout Prevention Project of Family Service helped Jamestown Public Schools reduce its high school dropout rate. The United Way recruited five local business leaders who are volunteering to advocate in support of continued Universal Pre-Kindergarten funding for all local school districts in the 2009 New York State budget. They are Dan Berry, President and CEO of Ulrich Planfiling Equipment Corp.; Pierre Chagnon, Director of Human Resources for SKF Aeroengine NA; Michael Metzger, Chief Financial Officer for AcuRite Inc.; Vern Wetmore, President of SYSCO Food Services; and Kristy Zabrodsky, shareholder with Buffamante, Whipple, Buttafaro, PC. These local volunteers are part of a statewide network of UPK business advocates which is being organized by the United Way of New York State, the state association which represents local United Ways to the state government in Albany. Call volume to the 2-1-1 information and referral line grew by an extraordinary 59% in the past year, as the United Way partner site for the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus region improved its outreach and marketing efforts. The number of calls for 2008 totaled 1984 from the two-county area. The greatest number of requests for service is in the area of basic needs such as food, housing, and temporary financial assistance. In addition, callers frequently ask for assistance with justice, legal, and income tax programs, followed by health care, employment, and mental health counseling. Other callers to 2-1-1 ask for help to find program contact information. When you or someone you know needs help finding a program or service, call 2-1-1 or toll-free 1-888-696-9211. United Way is an integral part of the Chautauqua County Earned Income Tax Coalition – recruiting and training volunteers and establishing tax preparation sites to help hundreds of income-eligible taxpayers receive the refunds to which they are entitled. During the 2007 tax season, 47 trained volunteers helped to file 1,273 returns electronically for free in Chautauqua County. As a result, over $996,000 in state and federal refund dollars were returned to our local economy.

MY NAME IS BOB. I’m a delivery driver for Meals on Wheels of the Jamestown Area. I’ve been with Meals on Wheels for three years. Before that I helped out at CARTS for four years as an escort on the buses. I enjoy helping people out in the community. I’m 65 years old, and I’m not one for sitting home and doing nothing. When I was at CARTS, I helped with the dialysis runs, the grocery runs, and the Chautauqua Adult Day Care runs – wherever they needed me. At Meals on Wheels, I deliver hot, cold, and frozen meals to senior citizens five days a week. Sometimes, we drivers are the only ones these people see each day. It kind of brightens their day a bit. I just enjoy doing things for people. I feel like I’m really making a difference. That’s how I LIVE UNITED.

Twelve local residents graduated from the United Way’s Project Blueprint leadership development program in the past year. Project Blueprint is designed to develop leadership for community organizations, promote voluntarism on boards and committees of the United Way, its member agencies, local governments, and other community organizations, with a special emphasis on the increased representation of people of color. Seven of the Project Blueprint graduates were placed on local boards of directors.

United Way worked closely with the Hispanic Outreach Coalition throughout 2008 to develop a plan to better educate Spanish speaking families about support services available in Jamestown and Chautauqua County, and to make referrals to the most appropriate organizations. The United Way Board of Directors approved funding for a service navigator – someone who will work through Joint Neighborhood Project, and in conjunction with staff already operating through other non-proﬁt organizations and Jamestown Public Schools. The project will get underway in 2009.

I was proud to chair the 2008 United Way Campaign, because I believe so strongly that giving to our community is important. Without contributions to the annual Campaign, United Way programs and services would not be possible. It is a privilege to have worked with so many dedicated volunteers, and to be able to announce that we raised $1,380,996 - more than our $1,370,000 goal! Thank you, to the entire community, for making the 2008 Campaign a success and for helping to provide so many important services for local people. Giving back to our community. That’s how we all LIVE UNITED.

MY NAME IS LIZ. I am a volunteer with CASAC’s Awareness Theatre. Why? I get to help people, but it’s a lot more than that. I volunteer because I know that it is the right thing to do, and I’m not just helping people, I’m helping save lives, and helping prevent problems, and I get to do all of this through something that I love to do. I mean, before this I never used my acting skills at all, and now instead of using them for my own publicity and my own selfish wants, I’m using it for other peoples needs. Acting for the good of others. That’s how I LIVE UNITED.

MY NAME IS BERK. I am a volunteer with the Court Appointed Special Advocate program. I work with children who, through no fault of their own, find themselves living with people other than their parents. I have the opportunity, in some small way, to improve the lives of these children, and I have the privilege of being a part of the complex and well designed system of federal, state, and county agencies that exists to help and protect them.

VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR United Way chose three women as its Volunteers of the Year in 2008, Patricia and Dolores Rewers and their mother, Valeria Rewers. The sisters began volunteering in the community after their retirement, and a short time later got their mother involved as well. While they started as volunteers with the Sports Hall of Fame, they have since volunteered through RSVP at any community organizations including the YMCA, Chautauqua Striders, and Lutheran Social Services. When United Way changed the way it packages materials for campaign last year, they sought volunteers who would be thorough and efficiently handle detailed work. RSVP sent in the Rewers’. United Way Volunteer Coordinator Kelley Manno said, “We have always been pleased with their work. When we need people who are organized and detail-oriented, we call the Rewers’ now. We know they will do a thorough job and they are such nice people to have in the office.” “We like to help with mailings and clerical work, since it lets us use our old office skills. We enjoy working together, and as we talk while we work we have met so many nice people,” Dolores said. Patricia added, “Anywhere a volunteer goes, it helps. If more people volunteered, they would find out what a great place this is to live!” Volunteering is how the Rewers’ LIVE UNITED.

JOSEPH H. MASON AWARD Jack C. Rudy received the United Way of Southern Chautauqua County’s 2008 Joseph H. Mason Community Service Award. He is a member of CSEA Local 903 and is President of the Jamestown Area Labor Council, AFL-CIO. Mr. Rudy is a delivery volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and past chairman of “Take Kids Ice Fishing”, in association with Chautauqua County Cooperative Extension. He is a past member of the Fluvanna Fire Department, and former EMT certification trainer. Mr. Rudy is a U.S. Navy Veteran, a retired employee of Chautauqua County and was a member and past president of CSEA Unit 6500. He is a charter member, officer, and executive board member of the Western New York Area Labor Federation, and a member of the Workforce Development Center of Western New York. He is a life member and past president of the Chautauqua Lake Fishing Association, and a life member of VFW Post 557, Amvets Post 1996, and War Vets Rec. The award was presented by Charles DeAngelo, son-in-law of the late Joseph Mason, and United Way Executive Director Mike Moots. Labor involvement in the community is part of how we LIVE UNITED.
