HOW WE LIVE UNITED In many ways 2010 will be remembered as a significant year for United Way. This year’s campaign was conducted in a difficult economic environment, and with several other community appeals underway. With known losses from the previous year expected to reach $100,000, the challenge for the 2010 campaign team was particularly great. Campaign Chair Tom Schmidt and his volunteers rose to the challenge and raised $1,320,479, or 104% of their goal! What an accomplishment for Tom, his entire team, and for all of the companies and individuals who stepped up and gave. Their contributions will help our member agencies and the United Way deliver important human services throughout our Southern Chautauqua community. Despite the wonderful success of our Campaign, the fact is the United Way will distribute fewer resources to its community partners in the coming year. Be assured, the United Way Board and staff are committed to managing expenses and investing program resources in ways that will produce the best possible results for the community at the most reasonable cost. During the past year the United Way Board ended merger negotiations with the United Way of Northern Chautauqua County. Representatives of both United Ways worked diligently for nearly two years to evaluate the possibility of consolidation. We express our sincere thanks to the volunteers of both United Ways for their good-faith efforts in the best interests of both communities. For our United Way, this period of time following the merger discussions has become a time for renewal. We have developed a new series of strategic objectives for the next three years, and welcome several new members to the Board of Directors. We particularly express our deep appreciation and sincere thanks to the long-time members who are retiring now from our Board. They gave of themselves “beyond the call of duty” in order to provide knowledgeable and wise guidance during these recent years, and we are grateful to them for their service. As the United Way begins its transition to new leadership in 2011, we thank the community for the opportunity to serve in these past years. The United Way is blessed to have a great Board of Directors, incredible volunteers, a veteran professional staff, fine member agencies, and thousands of long-time donors who support the campaign generously each year. The children and families of Southern Chautauqua County will be served well by the United Way and its community partners for many years to come.

GIVE. ADVOCATE. VOLUNTEER. Throughout the year, United Way provides opportunities for people to be involved – to give, advocate, and volunteer. These are United Way’s calls to action for our community. Through giving, we make a difference for thousands of local children, families, and adults. In 2010, United Way donors invested over $1.12-million in Southern Chautauqua County. For many years, United Way has been providing funds not only to programs operated by member agencies, but also to its own human service programs that create a better quality of life in our community. In 2010, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program returned just under $2-million to the local economy in the form of tax refunds to low-income working people. The VITA program has grown for the past several years, recruiting more volunteers and serving even more families. Last spring, over 40 United Way volunteers reviewed applications for funding and met with local human service agencies to discuss their programs. Recommendations from those volunteers were ultimately approved by the Board of Directors. As a result, United Way is currently funding 45 programs at 18 partner agencies. Throughout the year, United Way staffed the WNY 2-1-1 partner site which served Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties. Over 3,200 callers sought help finding programs and services that meet basic needs, and provide legal services, health care, mental health counseling, and more. Due to funding cuts, United Way was forced to discontinue its 2-1-1 partner site at the end of the year. Fortunately, the entire region still has access to the telephone information and referral service through the Western New York regional office. You can still dial 2-1-1 to find help. As you review this report, we hope you will consider the importance of United Ways links between people and programs. It is these connections that continue to make United Way a vital part of our community, with a focus on making a difference in education, income, and health. Thank you for being a part of United Way. For more information about our work, visit our web site at www.uwayscc.org.
Matched in a mentoring partnership while he was still in middle school, Joe and Kim have become like family over the years. When he leaves high school in the spring, Kim will be there to cheer him on and help him transition into higher education. “She never had to get involved in my life,” Joe says. “But she has helped me become a better person, and now I have goals and a plan for after high school.”

THANK YOU Chairing the 2010 United Way Campaign has been a very rewarding experience and one I will never forget. As I write this message, the campaign total has reached $1,320,479! A huge THANK YOU goes to all of the donors and volunteers who helped us surpass our $1.275-million goal. It was my privilege and honor to work with an amazing group of volunteers. Their dedication and commitment was inspiring. Their resolve, combined with the knowledge and hard work of the United Way staff, was a formula for success. Thanks to our donors, we are addressing many community needs. The support of all of these people and organizations will allow dozens of vital services to continue right here in Southern Chautauqua County, and you can be assured that the funds we raised will go to the programs which will have the greatest positive impact in our community. As you read through these pages, please look at our list of donors – companies, employee groups, foundations, labor unions, and Leadership Circle givers. Also take some time to review the volunteer list. As you meet these people in our community in the coming months, will you take a moment to thank them for their generosity? All these people working together have made this area we call home an even greater place to live. They have made a tremendous difference in our lives through the way they give, advocate, and volunteer. This is how we all LIVE UNITED. With sincere thanks,
Pacesetters

The Board of Directors at Joint Neighborhood Project works to address the needs of the neighborhood it serves. While JNP provides for emergency and basic needs, it also goes deeper to see that families can become contributing members of the community. Dave says, “When we hold our Live and Learn English graduation, the families get dressed to the nines. They are so proud of their mothers, sisters, fathers, and uncles, and the looks on their faces are worth all the work we do. We work with Hispanic families, black families, and poor white families, with everyone in the neighborhood, really. We work with them so that they become someone who gives back to the community.”

VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR
JOSEPH H. MASON AWARD
United Way recognized two long-time volunteers with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program as its Volunteers of the Year. United Way Director of Community Building P. Richard Fleurant said Martha Grilla and Charles Heinz have been dedicated to the program and the people it serves. “People who are returning to get their taxes done will often request Martha or Charlie as their tax preparer. They have come to know them and trust them,” Mr. Fleurant said. “They are willing to help whenever they can, and both have said that they like volunteering to do taxes because they really get to see the benefits of helping those who need it.” Volunteers honored by United Way agencies in 2010 were: Allegheny Highlands Boy Scouts................................... Jeff Aiken of the Carpenters Union with Donna Peterson, accepting the Joseph H. Mason Community Service Award on behalf of her late husband.
Robert L. Peterson was honored posthumously in August with the United Way of Southern Chautauqua County’s Joseph H. Mason Community Service Award for 2010. Mr. Peterson passed away in March. He was a member of Carpenters Local 66, serving on its executive board for six years. As a member of the Carpenters Union, he built wooden toys for the Salvation Army to distribute to children at Christmas. He was also active in the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he made and donated wooden items for fundraisers, and packed and delivered Christmas boxes for veterans in nursing homes and hospitals. He was a member of the firing squads for the veterans organizations, and was past Commander of the DAV and chairman of the DAV Forget-Me-Not Drive. Mr. Peterson was a former allocation panel member for the United Way and also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, and was a member of Lakewood Rod & Gun Club, Carroll Lodge, and the Jamestown Consistory. The award was accepted by his widow, Donna. In nominating Mr. Peterson, past Mason Award winner Jeff Aiken of the Carpenters Union said, “Bob truly deserves this award. He did so much for the veterans of our community. This is a fitting tribute in memory of Bob.”
