LIVE UNITED
™
HOW WE LIVE UNITED United Way is blessed to be part of a generous community. In what was one of the most challenging fundraising climates in years, we are fortunate that so many gracious donors contributed to the 2009 United Way Campaign. I would like to congratulate Campaign Chair Chris Colburn and his hard-working team of volunteers for a tremendous effort. While our donors so kindly opened their hearts and wallets during this economic downturn, United Way and many of its funded programs will still have fewer resources in 2010. Combined with significant cuts in New York State funds, many programs will experience serious funding problems in the coming year. United Way and our member agencies will work hard to continue to serve the people of our region to the best of our ability in this demanding time. United Way’s own community building programs (EITC tax preparation, Project Blueprint, Hispanic outreach/service navigation, and our WNY 211 call center) successfully continued services in 2009. Although we have reduced the size of our 211 call center, it is still available to serve the people of Chautauqua County. All of these United Way services are designed to bring community organizations together in partnerships which better serve all residents of our area. Throughout 2009 our United Way and the United Way of Northern Chautauqua County met to discuss whether or not our communities and donors would benefit by combining our two organizations into a countywide United Way. I was proud to serve on this work group with Steve Maggio, Mike Roberts, and Hadley Weinberg. After much discussion, and with input from many donors and volunteers, the two United Ways have entered formal negotiations to identify and evaluate key governance and operating issues, seek solutions, and develop a business model for a combined United Way. Our negotiating team, made up of board members Steve Maggio, Jon Scalise, Peter Stark, and Tad Wright, will recommend whether or not to move ahead with an actual consolidation. Special thanks go to them and to all of those from both Boards who worked together on the initial discussions in this process. I thank them all for their important service. Finally, I thank the entire community – our donors, agencies, and the children and families served by United Way-supported programs – for the opportunity to serve as your Board President during 2009. Our United Way is a very effective organization. We don’t just talk the talk – we actually get things done that make a difference for all of our people. All United Way volunteers, including our Board of Directors, and our partner agencies should be proud of United Way’s significant accomplishments in 2009, many of which are acknowledged in this annual report.

EDUCATION, INCOME AND HEALTH United Way is focused on Education, Income, and Health. With these ideals at the core of our work, we are establishing a solid framework for improving people’s lives here in our community. Our mission is to build a stronger community by meeting the most important human care needs of our children, families, adults, and neighborhoods. To do this, we involve, organize, and motivate individuals and community organizations to identify needs and create positive change. In 2009, United Way invested over $1.16-million in Southern Chautauqua County. United Way funds programs operated by member agencies, and its own direct service programs. All of these funds are donated by our community, for our community. Education programs funded by United Way include the Dropout Prevention Project of Family Service, which for the second year in a row is helping Jamestown Public Schools to reduce its high school dropout rate. Additional education programs include Chautauqua Striders Lighted Schoolhouse Program, Hispanic Outreach through Joint Neighborhood Project, and numerous programs provided by the Boys & Girls Club, the YMCA, the YWCA, and other agencies. Partners in providing programs that help families become financially stable and independent include financial assistance through the Salvation Army, disaster services through the American Red Cross, and home-delivered meals through Meals on Wheels. Vision screenings and rehab through the Chautauqua Blind Association, health and safety training through the American Red Cross, and alcohol prevention education through Chautauqua Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Council are among the many health-related programs funded by United Way. Here are a few additional highlights from 2009:
When a high school student gives birth to a child, her chances of graduating from high school drop dramatically. Two thirds of these young women never earn their high school diploma because the difficulties of their situation lead them to drop out. With the help of the United Way of Southern Chautauqua County, the YWCA’s and Jamestown Public Schools’ TEAM Program provides support services that make graduation a reality for teen moms in our area.
»
Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, United Way recruited and trained volunteers and established tax preparation sites, helping to return over $1,520,000 in state and federal refund dollars to local taxpayers.
»
Another 12 local residents were trained through Project Blueprint to become members of local boards and commissions.
»
Jamestown native Jackson Rohm donated his time to raise money and awareness for United Way during a special campaign kickoff concert at Southwestern Central School.
In June 2009, five seniors from Jamestown High School and four others from Southwestern Central High School walked across their respective stages in caps and gowns and received their high school diplomas. »
Support services including flexible scheduling, academic classes and help, on-site childcare, social work, motivational activities and transportation have all contributed to making dreams into reality for these young women. Many of TEAM’s participants have expressed how important the program has been to their being able to achieve their goals. One of them said, “Without the help of TEAM, I wouldn’t be in my senior year getting to start a new life.”
George Atallah of the NFL Players Association was guest speaker at the annual United Way Salute to Labor dinner.
»
Following the August floods in Silver Creek and Gowanda, United Way’s 2-1-1 information and referral service took over 500 calls from individuals seeking food, clothing, and shelter.
Beth Oakes, Executive Director YWCA of Jamestown
»
2-1-1 also helped to direct callers to flu shot clinics operated by the Chautauqua County Health Department.
When you or someone you know needs help finding a program or service, call 2-1-1 or toll-free 1-888-696-9211. For more information about United Way go to www.uwayscc.org.

United Way has been a part of my life for many years. My father chaired this United Way Campaign in 1984, and I am proud to follow in his footsteps 25 years later in 2009. Having previously served as an allocation volunteer for United Way, I understand the importance of funding essential programs that benefit local children, families, and seniors. It has been a privilege to work throughout the year on this campaign with so many dedicated volunteers. They have worked hard to spread our message to individuals, companies, and organizations to ensure the success of the campaign. I am proud to announce that we have raised $1,350,000 this year, which would not have been possible without the personal dedication of each campaign volunteer. Year after year each campaign volunteer relies on the tireless efforts of our United Way staff. They provide support and resources to volunteers regardless of the timing and content of our requests. We are fortunate to have this group of dedicated community advocates. Most significantly, the funds that you, our donors, have so generously given will help local people in the coming year. We will continue to provide as many services as possible in 2010.

From CPR and First Aid to Water Safety Instruction and Life Guard training programs the local Red Cross has seen a significant increase in the demand for classes. Whether in community classes, community centers, workplace training rooms, or in our schools, over 9,500 citizens received the skills necessary to save lives and respond to injuries and sudden illness. Especially noteworthy this year has been the high demand for lifeguard training enabling young adults to secure good jobs at area lakes, pools, and community centers. Only through United Way funding support are we able to keep the costs of our classes low in order to better serve our local communities.

Jamestown’s Mary Lou Servis has been teaching music in the community for more than 30 years. Now, her community is helping her by delivering essential hot meals each day to her apartment through Meals on Wheels. The home-delivered meals have helped her to remain independent, and allowed her to still teach music privately to individuals in the Jamestown area. “I love them,” Mrs. Servis said. “I don’t have to worry what I’m going to have for supper, and the meals are so delicious.” But the meal itself is not the only reason she likes the service. “I really appreciate the people who spend the time to deliver meals each day,” she said. Each weekday, Meals on Wheels delivers hundreds of hot and cold meals to senior citizens in southern Chautauqua County. Many of those seniors receive their meals thanks to funding from United Way and its contributors. VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR United Way recognized the employees of SYSCO Food Services of Jamestown as its Volunteers of the Year. Executive Director Mike Moots said, “Our staff and volunteers have been so proud to work with this dedicated group of employees over the years. They have consistently done a tremendous job of fund raising for United Way, including running a number of special events at SYSCO. Their results are directly related to the time and effort their employee committee has contributed. Their employees have also served United Way in our allocations process, and on our Board of Directors.” “With the closing of the local SYSCO warehouse, we felt it was important to recognize the contributions of employees to United Way. As many of them relocate, we feel as though we are losing good friends,” he added. United Way and many of its member agencies pay tribute each year to volunteers during National Volunteer Week in April. Volunteers of the Year from United Way and its member agencies.
JOSEPH H. MASON AWARD William J. Servis received the United Way of Southern Chautauqua County’s Joseph H. Mason Community Service Award. He was a journeyman for the Road Sprinkler Fitters union.
