Frans Smeulders Managing Director FrieslandCampina Professional
Over 90 years of passion for milk
The origin of FrieslandCampina Professional dates back to 1920. Over the years, the company has changed shape a number of times, but two things have continued to be central: the passion for milk and the driving ambition to provide top quality.
• 1920 Jean Debije founds ‘Laiterie Debije’ in Saive, a village between Liège and Tienen in Belgium.
• 1960 ‘Laiterie Debije’ merges the company of Armand Schellens, who becomes managing director. • 1970 Armand Schellens founds ‘Zuivelfabriek Debic’ in Geldenaken. This is the first time the name ‘Debic’ appears. In fact, the founders agree to use ‘Debije’ as their future name, but due to an unfortunate transcription error by a public official ‘Debije’ becomes ‘Debic’. Only the first four letters still refer to the original founder of the company. Soon after its foundation, the new company starts exporting to the neighbouring countries, the Netherlands, France, and Germany. • 1972 Armand Schellens attends a trade fair where he discovers a revolutionary packing method: the aerosol canister. He works on a technology of packaging cream in the aerosol canister. Eventually he meets with success and Debic becomes the first company to market whipped cream in this form.
• 1975 - 1979 A new production factory is built in Lummen. At first, it is called ‘Zuivelfabriek Sint Hubertus producten Debic’ but later on the name is officially abbreviated to ‘Debic nv’. • 1986 The Dutch dairy cooperative Coberco acquires Debic. The name of the company changes to ‘Madibic’ while Debic continues to be the brand name for the food service market. Madibic stands for: ‘Maatschappij voor de Distributie van Debic Producten’ (Company for the distribution of Debic products). • 1997 In the Netherlands, there is a merger of four large dairy cooperatives: Coberco, Friesland Dairy Foods, Twee Provinciën and De Zuid-Oost-Hoek. The name of the new company is ‘Friesland Coberco Dairy Foods’. Our establishment in Lummen becomes known as ‘Friesland Madibic Food Service’. • 2005 The parent company is granted the title ‘Royal’ and the name changes to ‘Royal Friesland Foods’. Our establishment becomes ‘Friesland Foods Professional’. • 2009 Friesland Foods and Campina merge to form a single large dairy group: ‘Koninklijke FrieslandCampina’ (Royal Friesland Campina). The establishment in Lummen site becomes the main unit of ‘FrieslandCampina Professional’. Major investments are done in a production line for nutritional drinks. Sales & Marketing departments of Friesland Campina Cheese Benelux and Specialties move to the Lummen headquarters.
Strongly positioned in a global dairy group
FrieslandCampina Professional is an operating company of Royal FrieslandCampina. In 2009, the merger of the two milk cooperatives Friesland Foods and Campina created the fourth largest dairy group in the world.

Seamco
“Seamco and FrieslandCampina Professional: for many years a success story” The collaboration between FrieslandCampina Professional and Seamco dates from the early 1990s. The engineering and contracting company Seamco specialises in making filling and packaging machines for liquid products. “We work with a number of well-known manufacturers such as AROL, DIMAC, PE Labellers and GALDI,” tells Yves van Bavel, General Manager of Seamco. FrieslandCampina Professional in Lummen bought the first Arol capping machine from Seamco in 1991. Many other machines have followed. “In 2000, there was a change in the shareholdership of Seamco,” explains Yves van Bavel. “After that, our repeat ratio rose from 16 to 55 percent. This success is due, in part, to the many repeat orders of FrieslandCampina Professional for capping machines and shrink wrappers. Since 2003, FrieslandCampina Professional has engaged our services each year.”
Pillars of success The aspects of Seamco that form the strong pillars of this successful collaboration are efficient technology, competitive prices based on a long-term partnership, and the will and knowledge to put a perfect finish to a project. “The final decision to continue to work with us lies with the project managers,” tells Yves van Bavel. “We are proud of the fact that they have confidence in the abilities of Seamco and our subcontractors.” The excellent references FrieslandCampina Professional gave for Seamco projects resulted in a number of orders from other companies in the Benelux and from countries further afield.”
The future Seamco is anticipating a positive future collaboration. “We want to grow together with FrieslandCampina Professional. Not only by continuing our current service but also by supplying new machines such as cup fillers, gable top fillers and labelling machines. Our new machines tailor perfectly to the specific needs of the dairy industry,” concludes van Bavel.

Active in three markets FrieslandCampina Professional is active in three markets. For each target group, we have developed a business model that meets the specific customer expectations.
1. Food service business FrieslandCampina Professional develops a complete range of innovative dairy products for the professional market. Our professional clients – bakers, domestic caterers, large kitchens, restaurants, hotels, fast-food chains, quick service restaurants etc. – are served via wholesalers, Cash & Carry and direct delivery.
private label aerosol canisters for European retailers. The pillars of our success, today and tomorrow, are sound direct customer relations, cost-efficient production, optimal deliveries and customer service and, last but not least, innovation. In cases in which a local fine distribution is required, the local presence of our associate companies provides the necessary added value. Following the merger of FrieslandCampina, we have a market share of more than 40% and are the absolute leader in the supply of whipped cream aerosol canisters in Europe. We stand out with our state-of-the-art production equipment that complies with the requirements of our European customers.
3. Industrial business 2. Consumer business For the consumer market, FrieslandCampina Professional produces whipped cream in aerosol canisters and other consumer products in small consumer packaging. A single dedicated sales organisation is centrally responsible for the commercialisation of all whipped cream in aerosol canisters for consumers. In addition to our own important brand positions (for example Campina in the Netherlands), we fill the brand aerosol canisters of our strategic B2B partners, as well as
The food industry considers FrieslandCampina Professional a reliable partner for a range of dairy products, such as cream and butter. This product range comprises the traditional products as well as offering innovations such as cream that can be kept longer and tastes better. The strong growth within this segment is achieved, in particular, by meeting specific client wishes. Examples of this are the semi-manufactures for industrial bakers (cream patisseries) or for potato processors (instead of only the cream, we can now deliver ready-made gratin sauce).
Products with added value for each target group Within the three market segments – food service, retail, and industry – FrieslandCampina Professional has developed a range of quality dairy products with high added value: cream bases, cream specialities, cream alternatives, sweetened and non-sweetened whipped cream with different fat percentages and sugar contents, whipped cream in aerosol canisters, fillings, butter for pastries and cakes, butter concentrates, ready-to-use liquid butter, creamy ice-cream and shake mixes and dairy drinks in consumer packaging. All this comes in a wide range of packaging.
Production: nothing left to chance Our production processes operate in hygienic and controlled circumstances. The constant renewal and modernisation of facilities ensure that the highest standards are upheld. During the production process, the dairy products undergo a specific UHT treatment that – not only ensures that the products are bacteriologically sterilised and long lasting but also that the product characteristics and fresh taste are maintained better than in the case of conventional sterilisation.
Hermans Algemene Technieken of Lummen
“Extension of the in-house technical department” Hermans Algemene Technieken – abbreviated to HAT – has been collaborating closely with FrieslandCampina Professional since 2000. This family firm is the expansion of the one-man business established by Paul Hermans (father of Gert) in 1986. “We function as a flexible extension of the in-house technical department of FrieslandCampina,” explains Gert Hermans. Also my sister, Katleen Hermans, is in the firm. “We take on not only all the welding work – large and small – on the factory site but we are also often called in for other technical projects and mechanical maintenance by not only the technical department but also the production department, the laboratory and engineering” continues Gert Hermans. “Our greatest strength is that we work closely with the internal project leaders and have short lines of communication. A phone call and we are immediately on the spot. We do our utmost to ensure that the planning and time schedules are maintained.”
Technical total service Almost every day, the HAT technicians are to be found at FrieslandCampina Professional in Lummen. “We know the factory inside out” tells Hermans. “We are well aware that we are working in a controlled environment where hygiene and food safety are of vital importance.” HAT likes to work also with other clients on a long-term basis. “Thanks to our extensive technical experience, we are able to operate in any industrial environment. We offer a total service in the field of mechanics and maintenance, transport systems, assembly and machine building and electricity. Any company – ranging from a one-man business up to an established small or medium enterprise – can call on our services. In order to guarantee speedy service, we focus our activities on the provinces of Antwerp, Limburg and Flemish Brabant. With our centrally located establishment in Lummen, we can reach all our clients quickly.” More info: www.h-a-t.be

3. Audits In addition, we have the confirmation of all our clients who conduct their own audits or are supported by specialised groups, including national authorities.
Opting for corporate social responsibility FrieslandCampina attaches great importance to socially responsible and sustainable business practices. These themes form an integral part of all segments of the business operations. Without sacrificing economic yield, FrieslandCampina interprets these challenges, practically and concretely, in all manner of ways. FrieslandCampina is in close contact with its staff members, consumers, clients, business partners, social organisations and the local communities where the business establishments are located. The ISO 26000 guideline forms the framework within which FrieslandCampina wishes to conduct its business operations in a socially responsible manner. FrieslandCampina has identified four main areas for achieving this goal: food and health, environmental care, sustainable agriculture and a dynamic staff.

Four main themes
In order to conduct its business operations in a socially responsable manner, FrieslandCampina has identified four main areas for achieving this goal:
1. Food & health Important areas of attention within this area: healthy products, helping combat overweight, helping reduce underfeeding and hunger, food safety and quality control.
2. Environmental care At all the production sites, FrieslandCampina is engaged in achieving optimal energy efficiency, reducing air pollution and cutting back CO2 emissions. In addition, FrieslandCampina is aiming for efficient water consumption, a reduction of water pollution and cutting down on the weight and volume of all packaging.
3. Sustainable agriculture FrieslandCampina is an integral part of the dairy chain. The long-term goal is a complete dairy chain that is self sufficient in its energy supply with the use of wind, solar and biomass energy. Other aspects of the sustainable agriculture policy of FrieslandCampina are to stimulate grazing and use socially responsible soy as a component of fodder.
4. Dynamic staff FrieslandCampina respects its employees and encourages them to give the best of themselves. In this regard, a lot of attention is paid to education and training, remuneration systems, and performance-related management, as well as safety on the work floor and employee health.
