2020 ANNUAL REPORT
L ET T E R FR OM TH E PRES ID EN T AND T HE BOARD CHAIR
GREETINGS FROM NEW MEXICO, First and foremost, we hope that you receive our 2019-2020 Annual Report healthy, happy, and managing the COVID crisis. Last year started out like any other year: Students from 94 countries joined us with the usual and invigorating sense of optimism and potential to engage in the UWCUSA experience. Our rigorous IB academic coursework, our robust experiential programming (in wilderness, constructive engagement of conflict, sustainability, and arts and culture), and our residential programming focused on exploring our common humanity and the differences that we believe are causes for celebration rather than division. By March, the year wasn’t like any other in our history. Putting students’ health and safety first, we made the difficult decision to transition to remote learning and get our students back home. With courses completed online, a virtual graduation, and alumni and friends pitching in to host students who suddenly needed homes, the year ended with as many of the traditions intact as we could muster. It also ended with an outpouring of support from our community. And while we started planning for their return the day after they left campus, we kept working to strengthen our foundation for the long-term health of our school. continued on next page

As a result of the enormous dedication of everyone from our trustees, to our leadership team, to our staff, students, alumni and friends, we managed to: n
complete our robust, inclusive strategic planning process to strengthen our foundation;
n
begin implementation of our strategic plan with initiatives focused on • attracting and retaining mission-driven people, • providing mission-aligned, place-based signature programming, • implementing integrated systems to support decision-making as well as the student and employee experience, • creating a safe and sustainable campus, • developing a sustainable financial model—including cost cutting and new and enhanced sources of revenue— to put UWC-USA in the best position possible to fulfill our mission;
n
implement a distributed leadership model that better reflects our status as the only U.S. campus of the UWC movement as well as our commitment to cultivating excellent citizenship and leadership in our students and employees;
n
transition to online teaching and learning across all of our programming;
n
step up as an anchor institution in Las Vegas and San Miguel County, providing food from our farm and toys and books to support the disrupted education of our community’s children;
n
and end the fiscal year with a surplus and no layoffs due to the COVID crisis.
The pandemic didn’t make any of our work easy, but we did it for our students. And while our staff rose to the occasion, we never took them for granted. We are grateful as well to the alumni and friends of UWC-USA who supported our efforts. We want you to know that while we worked diligently to minimize the impact of the pandemic on our global students and on the employees who rely on us for their livelihoods, simultaneously doing the work to take our school forward, we were grateful that you were with us every step of the way. Together we rose to the challenges of the 2019-2020 fiscal year, thriving when so many institutions were struggling. Please know we value you and appreciate your support during this extraordinary time.

The Dwan Light Sanctuary serves the UWC-USA campus and the public as a refuge from the pace, conicts, and anxieties of daily living. The site was selected to capitalize upon the spectacular northern New Mexico light. The orientation and geometry of the building are derived from its alignment to the sun, moon, and stars. Projecting from a circular core are two apses each containing six large prisms mounted in sloping windows to capture light rays from sunrise to sunset.

We are enormously grateful to our alumni who gave back to UWC-USA during 2019-2020 and thrilled to report a participation rate of 29%. Alumni support allows us to ensure the same transformational experience for today's students and generations of UWCers to come. We also thank the many alumni who assist the school, especially our Annual Fund volunteers, Reunion Committee members, internship providers, National Committee volunteers, events organizers and hosts, campus speakers, Alumni-In-Residence Fellows, and others who give of their time and talent to enrich UWC-USA. WAYS TO G I VE
Donors who support UWC-USA and the students recognize the importance of the UWC mission and believe in the ways our students and alumni work to make education a force to unite people around the world. The students are deeply grateful for the support we receive each year – we recognize that our community is strong because of the generosity of so many alumni and friends. If you wish to make a donation to support scholarships or any other aspect of the UWC-USA program, please go to uwc-usa.org/give.
