Banana Smoothie!

Make a banana smoothie! Don’t throw out those aging bananas. Add one banana to 1/2 cup yogurt. Mix till smooth in the blender. You can also add orange juice, blueberries or other fruits.

Read to me! When cooking, encourage your child to help. For example, if a recipe calls for 3 eggs, ask her to get 3 eggs from the fridge. She’ll feel like she’s helping and counting will help develop her math skills.

As parents of young children, we should all work to achieve the wonderful effects of reading aloud to children by reading to our children for at least 20 minutes a day. This 20 minutes of reading time can be broken up throughout the day – 10 minutes here, 10 minutes there.

Turn chores like laundry into learning activities. Ask your child to identify colors, help you separate lights and darks, or count the number of socks. These activities will help build math and cooperation skills.

Reading time should be one-on-one reading per child for several reasons : 1. The age difference of your children can make it difficult to read to them together in an enjoyable setting for ALL parties involved . . . 2. One-on-one reading provides the perfect environment to bond, connect, and communicate with each child in the family. 3. One-on-one reading is also the perfect informal teaching environment. All young children love to ask questions when they are read to because they all have curious little minds. Reading one-on-one provides children with the best opportunity to ask all the questions they want. Just 20 minutes makes a difference!

Painting to Music

T H E M O S T A D V A N C E D H E A LT H C A R E I S B A S E D O N T R U S T.

Different kinds of music make children have different feelings. Children often express themselves through creative activities, such as painting. Prepare an easel or table-top. Set-up a C.D. player nearby (waterproof, if possible!). Select a variety of music, such as classical, music from different countries, or lullabies to listen to while they are painting. Ask your child how the music makes them feel and how their painting shows these feelings.

Simon Says Preschool children are preparing for kindergarten and elementary school, a time when carefully listening and following directions is an important part of school success. Help children practice their listening skills with non-competitive games such as “Simon Says”. Ask your child to perform actions such as “touch your nose”, “reach for the ceiling”, “dance with me”. Encourage children to listen and follow the directions; take turns being Simon.

Toys! The best toys are inexpensive basics (think blocks) that promote learning and imagination. Think big. Larger than your child’s mouth to prevent choking.

Let Your Child Pick The Book!

Read labels. Make sure it is nontoxic and age-appropriate. Keep it clean. Wash toys with soap and water and let air dry. If your child has been sharing toys use bleach water. (1/4 cup to 1 quart of water) Are they furry? Put fuzzy toys away during play dates. They can be germ spreaders.

Let your Child Choose

Allowing your child to pick the activity and decide how it is played gives him confidence.

VPK prepares children to be ready for kindergarten and builds a foundation for future educational success!

The quickest way to kill the love of reading is to force kids to read books they do not like. Books are not just for school readiness and learning to read; they can and should be fun and enjoyable for a LIFETIME of learning. (Especially if you want kids to see them as an alternative to video games and TV!) How would you feel if you were forced to read books your boss picked out for you at your beach vacation?

“Reading aloud to children is one of the most effective and inexpensive activities parents and educators do to promote literacy.” -The Reading Aloud Handbook by Trelease
