PARENT RESOURCE GUIDE ◆ SUCCESS BY 6 ◆ Sunday, Sunday, July 13, 2008 ◆ A PRODUCT OF LEDGER ADVERTISING
What is Success By 6? United Way Success By 6 is the nation’s largest network of early childhood coalitions focused on improving school readiness through community change. Since 1995 United Way of Central Florida’s Success By 6 has focused on early literacy to help children enter school ready to succeed. If we don’t take action now, we will continue to create a permanent segment of society who cannot participate fully in community life. We will all face higher taxes to support programs for people who are dependent, an increase in crime and a decline in America’s ability to compete in the world’s economy. If children don’t develop properly when they are young, they are more likely to drop out of school, go to jail, become a teen parent and require governmental assistance.
Help children get the right start! • Read with a child. • Volunteer at a childcare center. • Sponsor a Parent Lending Library. • Ask elected officials to support legislation that helps families and children.
• Support United Way and its partners. • Log onto bornlearning.org for more ideas.
• Volunteer with Success By 6.
For more information about Success By 6, Family Fundamentals or Born Learning contact Jodi Tucker at 863-648-1500 ext. 265.
Fun ways to help get your child ready for kindergarten: • Go water-bottle bowling in the hall. • Put colored ice cubes in a baggie and watch them melt. • Save junk mail for your child to “read” and examine.
Tape record your baby babbling. Play the sounds of the tape and see how the baby responds. Does she get excited? Does she try to talk back at the recorder? Try other recordings like nature sounds. Stimulating surroundings assure good language skill in the future!
• Read! Read! Read to your child and let him see you reading. • Talk! Talk! Talk to and with your child any and every chance you get.
Get your child ready for school and for life! All children who turn 4 years old on or before September 1, 2008 are eligible for FREE Voluntary Pre-K (VPK) in a 2008-2009 School Year Program. Go to http://www.elcpolk.org for more information.

Hands-On Snack Involving your child in the preparation of a new food is fun and encourages him to try it. Have your child peel a hard-boiled egg and put it in a zip-lock bag. Ask him to add 1 tablespoon of fat-free mayo. Zip the bag and let him smash it. Cut off one corner of the bag and let him squeeze the “egg salad” onto crackers. YUM! What you will need: hard boiled egg, fatfree mayonnaise, tablespoon and crackers. Your child will be working on these skills: following oral directions, measuring, understanding transformation, trying new things.

Smile Inside The sound of your voice When you gently talk,

The look on your face when towards me you walk. Sweet smell of your hair when it touches my face, Your smile, your laughter that I can’t replace. Your words of caring I cherish so dear, My soul fills with joy whenever you’re near. The breath of an angel fills my chest with pride. Because thinking of you makes me smile inside. -Walter Brown

Modeling- Someone once said “Good behavior is caught, not taught”. Children watch us all the time. How do we react to disappointment, stress, anger? How do we sound when we talk to our children? Are the people who are in their lives appropriate models? Our children do what we do and say what we say. You can count on that!

Pay attention when your child is speaking to you. Turn off the TV, put down the newspaper, look him in the eyes and listen. Let him know you care what he says. Don’t be surprised if your child starts doing the same with you!.
