What is Let’s Grow?
“Let’s Grow - every child. every chance.” is a community initiative with a single calling: to plant the seeds of success for all children. Let’s Grow community partners include educators, researchers, community members, and business leaders. All have joined together to declare in one voice that all children deserve a chance for success in school and life. This community project is rooted in a single truth: Children who enter school ready to read SUCCEED! The goal of Let’s Grow is to eliminate the gap in early literacy between children from low and middle/high income levels. All children should have the same opportunity to bloom to their fullest potential. To do so, we must plant the four seeds for school success: 1. Access to good healthcare 2. Family involvement 3. Community awareness 4. Quality childcare
Are your children uninsured? Florida KidCare is the state’s children’s health insurance program for uninsured children ages birth through 18. Applications are being accepted throughout the year. Eligibility for Florida KidCare is based on the household size and family income. Most families pay $15 or $20 per month, or nothing at all. Some families may not be eligible for this reduced price premium and may be offered a full pay option under MediKids or Healthy Kids. For more information or for an application call 1-888-540-5437 or go to http://www.floridakidcare.org/. No child should be uninsured! Children who have access to good healthcare are more likely to succeed in school.
There are currently three communities where Let’s Grow is sowing the seeds of “ready for school” success – Fort Meade, Lake Wales and Crystal Lake. In these neighborhoods, Let’s Grow partners are offering good healthcare, encouraging families to get involved, spreading the word to increase awareness, and working to make quality childcare available to all. Let’s Grow embraces a holistic approach that takes advantage of a variety of tools and programs, such as Success By 6 resources, speech and hearing screenings, training for childcare providers, family literacy programs, summer literacy camps, parent education, Florida KidCare, and much more. Working hand-in hand, Let’s Grow community partners are making a real and visible difference in our community. Please join us as we encourage young minds to soar, and all children to flourish.
For more information contact Jodi Tucker at jodi.tucker@uwcf.org or 863.648.1500 ext. 265. LET’S GROW. every child. every chance. Another United Way community initiative.
If your child is 5 years old or older and shows any of the following behavior you should let your doctor know, according to the Academy of Pediatrics. • • • • • •
Very fearful, timid or extremely aggressive behavior. Unable to concentrate on one activity for more than five minutes. Little interest in playing with other children. General unhappiness or sadness much of the time. Trouble eating, sleeping or using the toilet. Can’t tell the difference between fantasy and reality.
A child must be healthy emotionally and physically to be prepared to learn!
In 2008 the idea for a local Children’s Cabinet emerged from a United Way Success By 6 meeting, recognizing the need for an increased local public policy effort and an inclusive and unified voice for children’s issues. The 10th Circuit Children’s Cabinet’s mission is to mobilize and align resources and advocate for public policy that supports the empowerment of children, youth, and families in becoming productive members of our community, that all children, youth and families are afforded diverse and abundant opportunities that promote the achievement of their full potential. The 10th Circuit Children’s Cabinet is United for Children. Please join us the 3rd Thursday of each month at 2:00pm at the DCF office located at 1055 Highway 17 in Bartow. For more information please contact Teri Saunders at 863-519-8900, ext. 200, or tsaunder@heartlandforchildren.org. Community Awareness of childhood needs is one of the four seeds to success for children to reach their full potential!
No matter how hard you try to teach your children good behavior, they’ll still follow your example. -Charlie Tweddle

Learning begins at birth. Your child at just two months has been learning a lot! He is already able to smile at you and tell you by crying if he’s hungry, cold or scared. At this stage, the most important factors in his healthy development are loving relationships with warm, responsive and dependable adult caregivers. It’s essential to make the most of this critical period in his growth by spending lots of time holding, cuddling, playing and reading with your child Communication involves more than just words!

Are you baby smart?
True or False?
1) Watching TV stimulates your child’s development similar to your own talking. False. The “talking” from a TV does not give your baby the same benefits as the sound of your voice since the TV cannot respond to your baby’s attempts to interact with you. Also, when you talk, sing and read it is the sound of your voice, not just any voice, that helps your baby bond with you and feel the love and affection that she needs to grow and develop. 2) Babies who are content and comfortable are better learners. True. A baby’s ability to learn is influenced by her emotional well being. By giving your child a lot of warm and affectionate experiences, you encourage her to learn more. 3) You should start talking to your baby as soon as he begins to make sounds at you. False. From the time your baby is born, well before he can make sounds or form words, you should talk, sing and read to your baby as much as possible. Sounds are the foundation for speech and language. It doesn’t matter that he cannot understand what you say or answer you.
Bedtime should follow a consistent schedule. For example, bath, teeth brushing, bedtime story, nightlight, kiss good night and sleep. A consistent routine helps children learn to go to sleep by themselves.
4) The care you provide your baby will effect the development of his brain. True. Just as a baby’s body depends on parents for food to grow, his brain depends on experiences to grow and develop. At birth, a baby’s brain is pretty well formed, but the connections or “the wiring” in the brain is just getting started. Stimulation through a variety of experiences helps the connections to develop. Most of your baby’s experiences involve interaction with you, so the care you provide plays a critical role in forming these connections.
Reading to kids, even babies, helps them succeed in school!
