OUR MISSION:

Mobilize the community to improve people’s lives.

1

UNITED WAY OF CENTRAL MARYLAND

Dear United Way Supporter, What an amazing year! Harnessing the collective impact of so many donors, volunteers and partners during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012, United Way of Central Maryland (UWCM) was able to: •

Prevent family homelessness and reduce student mobility (thanks to a grant from the Siemer Institute for Family Stability), as well as stabilize the lives of the homeless and near homeless with emergency shelter, transitional housing and supportive services, enabling people to obtain and remain in housing – a first step in the path out of poverty.

Make individuals and families in our community healthier via the Access to Healthy Food Initiative, a multi-year, multi-partner program aimed at increasing the affordability and accessibility of healthy food for central Marylanders in need. Targeting the many food deserts across our region, United Way raised more than 2.8 million pounds of healthy food in the initiative’s first year alone.

Educate at-risk children through school-readiness programs, quality child care, tutoring and other out-of-school time activities, improving literacy and academic skills.

Connect people in desperate situations with help 24/7 via our 2-1-1 Maryland at United Way of Central Maryland call center, which answered more than 96,000 calls last year from local people in need of housing, financial or utility assistance, food, and more.

Mobilize volunteers from workplaces, families, schools and other groups like Emerging Leaders United (our young professionals society) to donate their time and talents to improving our community – whether harvesting produce on a farm, serving meals to the homeless, beautifying nonprofit centers or scheduling free tax prep appointments for low-income earners.

Looking ahead, we are continuing our work with results-oriented programs that lift central Marylanders out of poverty and move them toward self-sufficient, high-quality lives – and are sharpening that focus to ensure that the youngest members of our community are not left behind. Our new Family Stability Initiative is tackling the problem of family homelessness, which can have long-lasting implications for the academic success of children. And another new program, READ LEARN SUCCEED, is aimed at helping children from low-income families learn to read so they can succeed in school and beyond. Thank you for supporting this important work that touches lives every day in our community. Best wishes for an even brighter future,

Mark Furst John Cammack President and CEO Chair, Board of Directors United Way of Central Maryland United Way of Central Maryland

OUR IMPACT IN FY2012

We operate on the belief that education, income and health are the building blocks of a successful life. By focusing our work in these three areas, local people facing poverty can get out of crisis, stabilize their lives and ultimately, achieve self-sufficiency. Below is a sample of the outcomes-oriented community work that UWCM supported this year in Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties – ensuring that a network of services exists for people overcoming poverty.

2-1-1 Maryland at United Way of Central Maryland

Did You Know? Across the nation, someone dials 2-1-1 every two seconds. UWCM’s 2-1-1 call center answered more than 96,000 calls for help from people in need of utility assistance, health care, housing, food and more.

More than 300,000 More than 1 out of every 10 central Marylanders lives in poverty. UWCM funded services for nearly 54,000 central Marylanders facing poverty, including housing, healthy food, school-readiness and financial literacy.

3

UNITED WAY OF CENTRAL MARYLAND

central Marylanders are food insecure. UWCM’s Access to Healthy Food Initiative expanded access to healthy food by more than 2.8 million pounds in the first year of the program through growing more, improving distribution, and increasing availability and affordability.

LIVES IMPACTED Fresh Produce Leads to a Fresh Start Esther from Anne Arundel County knew that an important part of her dialysis treatment was eating healthy, but had to rely on whatever was available at her local food pantry where healthy options were often limited. Thanks to UWCM’s Access to Healthy Food Initiative (in partnership with FoodLink), Esther started eating fresh produce regularly. Funding from UWCM enabled the organization to make foods like sweet potatoes, tomatoes, kale, peppers and apples available to its clients, many of whom experienced health issues. Esther’s health improved dramatically, and now she volunteers to deliver food to others in need.

Home Again in Harford County Jan and her four children’s lives changed suddenly one day after a terrible car accident, which caused Jan to be hospitalized for several weeks, her bills left unpaid. Before long, the family became homeless. It could happen to almost anyone. Fortunately, a UWCM funded partner, The Arc Northern Chesapeake Region, was there to help. The UWCM funding enabled Jan to pay the security deposit on a new apartment and a portion of the first month’s rent. She also secured donated furniture and had help moving. Thanks to UWCM funding, Jan found a full-time job that she enjoys, and her family is on its way to self-sufficiency.

Domestic Violence Survivor Rebuilds Her Life Annie, the mother of a three-year old daughter and five-year old son with Down syndrome, fled a domestic violence situation and had nowhere for her family to live. After a stay in a shelter, she moved into transitional housing provided by Bridges to Housing Stability, a UWCM funded partner in Howard County. Thanks to support from Bridges, Annie enrolled in and passed training programs to become a nursing assistant. With her new job, Annie had the financial means to afford housing for her family – as well as newfound confidence and independence.

Single Mom Finds Care – and Hope – for Special Needs Daughter Sarah’s income was in jeopardy as she struggled to keep her retail job while ensuring that her daughter, Mia, received the necessary care for her behavioral and mental health challenges. Affordable, high-quality child care can be difficult for anyone to find, but particularly so for a child with special needs. The Carroll County resident enrolled in United Way funded partner Carroll Child Care Center’s Sliding Scale program, where Mia receives behavioral analysis from local mental health professionals. This program, underwritten by UWCM, allows Sarah to maintain her self-sufficiency by retaining her job and providing Mia with the appropriate treatment, education and care all in one location. *Names have been changed for confidentiality reasons.

Looking Ahead At our core, United Way is an organization dedicated to strengthening local communities by focusing on the building blocks of a good life: education, income and health. In addition to our Access to Healthy Food Initiative and other programs that address basic needs, healthy food and community resources, our new Family Stability Initiative and READ LEARN SUCCEED are helping families with housing, financial security and education. By continuing to convene private, public and nonprofit partners, we can and will create long-term solutions to our community’s greatest issues.

SPECIAL PARTNERSHIPS AND EVENTS

Day of Action Hundreds of volunteers mobilized on October 20, 2011 to complete projects at 30 nonprofits throughout the region, and did so again throughout the spring for our Days of Action.

Emerging Leaders United Conference 150 young leaders attended our 1st annual Live United Young Professionals Conference, organized by our Emerging Leaders United (ELU) group. The day-long conference included sessions about building your personal brand, social media, public speaking and other topics relevant to today’s young leaders.

Days of Action Events fall and spring

The speakers were great and the sessions were very applicable to the issues young professionals face in our career development. In fact, I had trouble deciding which session to attend. It was also so beneficial to meet other professionals like me outside of my normal network and I am looking forward to more ELU events to come. - Feedback from one of the 2012 ELU conference attendees

Youth Ventures Students from Edgewood High School in Harford County and Benjamin Franklin High School in Baltimore City presented proposals for community projects and received grants to execute them in this year’s Youth Ventures program, made possible through funding from SimplexGrinnell and Tyco.

Student United Way Alternative Spring Break College students from five local universities gave up a day of their spring break to make a difference volunteering at Mosaic Community Services as part of Student United Way of Central Maryland’s Alternative Spring Break.

UWCM PROGRAMS 2-1-1 Maryland at United Way of Central Maryland In addition to answering more than 96,000 calls for health and human service help 24/7, 2-1-1 MD at UWCM engaged in several special initiatives to expand our impact.

Harvest of Plenty

Helping Baltimore children stay engaged and nourished while school is out in partnership with Baltimore City Super Summer.

Connecting uninsured individuals and families with health care in partnership with HealthCare Access Maryland.

Scheduling tax assistance appointments for low- and moderate-income central Marylanders to help them move toward financial stability in partnership with Baltimore CASH Campaign.

Pictured above: Walter called 2-1-1 for the first time to participate in Harvest of Plenty. His wife had passed away earlier in the year, and since then he had been struggling to provide for their six children. A stoic man, his voice trembled when he talked about his gratitude for this meal, “It means a lot.”

Ensuring that 2,500 local families in need would not go without a Thanksgiving meal, 2-1-1 MD at UWCM ran its 19th Annual Harvest of Plenty holiday meal program.

Access to Healthy Food Initiative In its first year, the initiative expanded access to healthy food by 2.8 million pounds for food insecure central Maryland residents.

Access to Healthy Food Initiative Launch - October 10, 2011 Harvest Helpers Gleaning crops on the farm to donate to local food pantries, volunteers joined in the Access to Healthy Food Initiative and often made it a family affair.

Families Living United Stone Soup at Our Daily Bread - November 19, 2011 “Stone Soup” UWCM’s Families Living United volunteer group participated in two sold-out “Stone Soup” gatherings, where each family brought an ingredient and together, assembled healthy meals for local families in need.

Calvert School Healthy Food Drive - October 24-28, 2011 Healthy Food Drives 89 organizations contributed to our Access to Healthy Food Initiative by running healthy food drives, a twist on the traditional food drive that encourages thoughtful donations of nutritious items.
