We hope you find United Way’s 2011 Volunteer Guide a useful resource to find meaningful volunteer opportunities in the health and human services sector across central Maryland. Whether you are seeking something for yourself, your family, or a group - on a one time basis or longterm - the guide can lead you to many great causes and organizations that will welcome you with open arms. ASK “WHAT DO YOU NEED?” Visit the websites of agencies you’re interested in. Make sure their work is something you are passionate about and that you have the skills required to make the most impact. Call the agency directly to learn about what they need and what you have to offer. BE OPEN TO ALL FORMS OF VOLUNTEERISM INCLUDING SKILLS-BASED AND DONATION DRIVES Days of Action are a great way to volunteer on-site at an agency, but there are many ways to give back to your community. Ideas include coordinating donation drives or using one of your professional skills to help fill an agency need, like finance, marketing and communications, or legal assistance. CONSIDER A LONG-TERM COMMITMENT Trained, ongoing volunteers can be the most valuable. PLAN AHEAD & BE FLEXIBLE Agencies work with many volunteers to ensure they meet their mission. Plan ahead for the best chance of getting your first choice of date or time. If your first choice of date or time isn’t available, try to coordinate another time with the agency. PLAN APPROPRIATE ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN Due to safety and liability reasons, some agencies are unable to accommodate young children. If you are unable to bring your child to a volunteering event, there are many other ways to introduce children to the important concept of giving back to their community. LIMIT YOUR GROUP SIZE Due to safety and liability reasons or space limitations, some agencies are unable to accommodate large groups. If you are a member of a large group, consider splitting up into smaller groups on different days. HONOR YOUR COMMITMENT Once you’ve committed to serving on a specific day, make every attempt to honor your commitment. The agency most likely turned down other offers of help in order to welcome you, and its counting on your help! FOLLOW ALL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES SET BY THE AGENCY HAVE FUN! REFLECT Take time to reflect on your experience. What did you learn? How did the experience change your perspective? Would you do it again? SPREAD THE WORD There are many ways to give back in your community. Encourage your friends, family members and colleagues to do the same!

January Recognize National Mentoring Month and pledge to be a volunteer reader, tutor or mentor to help children succeed in school – and in life. Visit liveunited.org/LUWvolunteer. Honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by serving your community on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Contact your local Volunteer Center for ideas. February Blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter months. Coordinate a blood drive or donate blood at your local Red Cross donation center. Visit redcross-cmd.org. March It’s Read Across America month. Participate in UWCM’s Virtual Book Drive to donate books to kids in need. April National Volunteer Week encourages all Americans to commit to volunteering in their community and also celebrates the invaluable services volunteers do every day. Contact your local Volunteer Center for volunteer opportunities year-round. May Celebrate Mother’s Day by coordinating a Community Baby Shower to provide a new Mom in need with the supplies necessary to take care of her new bundle of joy. June June 21st is the longest day of the year. Celebrate by participating in United Way’s annual National Day of Action. July Food Banks often run dry during the summer months. Join UWCM’s Access to Healthy Food Initiative by coordinating a healthy food drive or volunteering to serve a meal or sort food donations. August Gear up for Back to School by contributing school supplies to a family in need. September Honor victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks on America by participating in the National Day of Service and Remembrance. October Participate in UWCM’s Day of Action and join hundreds of other UWCM supporters across the region on a single day of volunteerism and unity. November Recognize National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week by contributing to Harvest of Plenty so a family in need can enjoy a hearty Thanksgiving dinner. Volunteering is a great way for families to spend quality time together. Honor National Family Volunteer Day by committing your family to volunteering several times a year. December Give a family Hope for the Holidays by providing gifts and other holiday needs through United Way’s annual drive. Observe United Way Worldwide Day of Action on December 5th by coordinating a donation drive to supply United Way agencies with much-needed supplies. Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County www.bgcharfordco.org After-school, weekend and summer educational, recreational and social programs with an emphasis on at-risk youth, ages 6 to 18. Volunteer Opportunities: One-one-on volunteers play a valuable role in transforming the lives of Club members. As little as one hour per week can make a positive impact on a child’s life.
