Make the most of your summer in the city with these watersports By THAILYR SCRIVNER @TYSCRIVNER a

I

s there a much more anticipated time than summer in Ohio? Instead of just getting outside for the sake of being outside, amp it up with some local water sports. Whether it’s a lazy paddle down the Olentangy or torching calories doing Standup Paddle Board, Columbus has it. There are a few places in Columbus that offer both kayak and canoe rentals. Decide whether you want to explore the Olentangy, Scioto, Big Darby Creek or Alum Creek State Park and paddle away. Olentangy Paddle offers two different launch sites along the Olentangy River and one along the Scioto River. With a launch just off campus at Tuttle Park, it’s easily the closest. They offer a paddle & pedal option for $6 which allows a bike rental at the end of your route to get back to your car, between 2.5-3.6 miles, totally walkable, too. $30 per person includes boat rental, life jacket, paddles and a short lesson. Trapper John’s Canoe Livery is just 20 minutes south in Grove City offering routes along Big Darby 8

UWEEKLY • June 24, 2015

Creek, ranging from one to six hours. Each route is different but features include a wildlife preserve and the Old Harrisburg Mill. $16 to $35 per person, depending on length, includes boat rental, paddles, life jackets and transportation to and from. Alum Creek Marina rents out kayaks and canoes for trips around scenic Alum Creek. $15 per hour for a kayak or $25 for a two-hour canoe ride and includes boat rental and all safety equipment. Or, if you’re looking to make a real-life episode of Bobby’s World, they have Aqua Cycle equipment to rent, essentially a giant water tricycle. $10 per hour. Standup Paddle Boards has become a fitness hit with many celebrities, but now you can try it too with SUP Columbus at either Alum Creek or Hoover Reservoir. $30 for one 90-minute session. SUP Columbus has also partnered with Yoga on High for Standup Paddleboard Yoga. $40 includes session and rental. If you want to fly on that board you’re standing on, check out flyboarding. Flyhio features a water uweekly.com

jetpack you wear while attached to a jet ski giving you the feeling of flying as water pressure increases to lift you up. If you’d prefer to stay on the water, Scioto Board in Hilliard has wakeboarding lessons where you’ll get on-the-water training around Griggs Reservoir. $55 for 30 min. Wakeopolis in Marysville also offers wakeboarding lessons but in a unique setting, a cable system. Be pulled across the 5-acre private lake by an electric overhead cable system which is said to be a faster way to learn. While the rest of your friends are riding, relax with a swim in the lake. $75 per hour weekdays, $90 per hour weekends. Something else to keep on your radar is Hero USA's Paddle in the City Happy Hour kayak tours, which will start and end at Woodlands Backyard. Enjoy kayaks, canoes and brews, Monday to Thursday, with launch times at 4:30, 5:30 and 6:30. Check out paddleinthecity.com and UWeekly.com/Paddle for more info!

Just keep swimming 4 places to dive into summer By @LAURENEVERY a

S

ummer has finally arrived, and with it comes the heat. In these seasonal temps, there are few things more appealing than floating around a pool with an ice-cold drink in your hand surrounded by friends. But, you might be at a loss as to where to reap such enjoyment when you’re campus bound. Have no fear; UWeekly has compiled some different destinations near campus where you can do just that.

Olentangy Commons 4765 Blairfield Dr Olentangy Commons is located about 15 minutes away from campus and is the ultimate summer day hangout for college kids. You don’t need a pass or any payment and you don’t need to know anyone who lives there. Just bring your friends and your favorite koozie and walk right in the gates to relaxation. But make sure you don’t bring glass drinks. The lifeguards aren’t big on broken glass and bare feet.

Zoombezi Bay 4850 W. Powell Road Be a kid for a day! Go down one of their 17 water slides, slosh around in the wave pool, or plop yourself on an inner tube and float down the lazy river. The only downfall is that a waterpark is bound to be buzzing with kids. But, if you’re really into people watching, that could potentially be a big plus. A day pass is $28.99 and alcohol is prohibited to bring in, but beer and cocktails are made available at a variety of food/drink shacks.

University Village - 505 Harley Dr University Village, like Olentangy Commons, is equipped with a free, open-to-the-public, pool. University Village is slightly closer to campus than Olentangy Commons but they both are sure to offer the same experience. BYOB.

Columbus City Pool 240 W. Oakland Ave.

uweekly.com

If you’re looking for a pool slightly closer, try out one of the Columbus City Pools located about five minutes from campus. City pools do always run the risk of a child ruining the waters, if you know what I mean. Which conveniently happened the one day I visited. True story. The pool doesn’t open until 1:30 p.m. each day because of swim classes for local children but the pool does offer leisure cards for $1 per day you visit. Four quarters for a day of sun and swim? It might be worth the risk.

people you meet on the oval By @JACOBGEERS a

hether it is covered by a picturesque coat of snow or the bodies of Buckeye sunbathers, the Oval is a place of wonderment at Ohio State. We walk through it on our way to classes, we relax in its soft grass, and we trudge our way through its snow when maintenance forgets to plow our favorite sidewalk. No matter what, though, we somehow always find these six types of people. 1. The Slowest Walker In the World – You are going to be just on time for class, you are walking at a nice brisk pace until WHAM this oval denizen cuts in front of you. This walker has all the time in the world and some to spare. They are taking

in the view, just obliviously strolling along as a crowd of people form behind them. These folks are a case study on why sidewalks need “fast lanes” and “slow lanes”, and they need to get in the slow lane. Pronto.

2. The Ridiculously Carefree Frisbee Players – Whenever we are going to our toughest, most boring class, the Frisbee players will be there to remind us what being free is like.

3. The Crazy Protesters / Hellfire Preachers – Some thoughts that go through your

mind when you realize you're heading toward this Oval personality: • Oh god, why did I come this way? • Is there another sidewalk I can take to avoid these guys?! No? Cool. • UGH, I’m going to have to walk past them …

I wonder why I am going to hell today ... QUICK I should get out my phone! Just look away ... • Oh wait, they have a giant television screen?? NOOOOO 4. The Loose Cannon Biker – You thought Ag campus was the no-holds-barred wild west of OSU, but you haven’t faced true terror until you are walking down a crowded Oval sidewalk and a speed demon on a bike comes barreling toward you. The Oval is supposed to be a “dismount zone”, and for good reason, but the lawless biker doesn’t give a flea’s fart. Get ready to dive bomb into the grass, because this guy is stopping for nothing. 5. The Guy Playing Bagpipes – Okay, technically he’s on the South Oval. But still. and guest ...

A plus-one survival guide for the modern day single person By @LAURENEVERY a

A

h, sweet summertime. The weather is warmer, the pools are wetter, the happy hours are happier, and the weddings are often. Opening some snail mail to reveal a beautiful wedding invitation can be an exciting occasion. However, when the invitation is addressed to your single self “and Guest” in fancy calligraphy, that excitement can turn to dread in .5 seconds flat. Take a deep breath. Now let’s explore the options.

maybe you’ve been on a date or two, maybe you just see them at the bar and hit it off on the dance floor and other places. But, asking them to a wedding can either: 1. Be a lot of fun and maybe even take your relationship to the next level. 2. Be a lot of fun and keep your relationship the same. 3. Be really awkward and ruin your relationship completely because they think this invitation was a sly way of saying you want to marry them. It really is a hit or miss.

Probably the first person that comes to mind is your best friend. You’re each other’s go-to person. You can be seen out together every weekend so why not invite them to an event with an open bar and free snacks all night? Sounds like a great idea. Another plus – a great wing woman/man. Unless your friend is the one always getting the girls/guys. Then they might steal the bridesmaid or groomsman you’ve had your eye on all night. Maybe consider bringing your number two best friend.

Ladies, if you’re unfamiliar with the wine bag phenomenon, let me enlighten you. There are several different varieties of wine bags. Option one, a normal purse with a special compartment at the bottom that is just the right size for a regular sized wine bottle. Option two, a nice leather bag complete with a nozzle on the side. Just fill ‘er up and pour her out. Option three is the award winning “bag in bag” purse design from Vernissage Wine. It looks like a cute checkered vintage purse and comes in three colors: “loneliness,” “single for life,” and “can I at least take some of this cake home with me.”

Your Best Friend

That one guy/girl you’ve been seeing

So, you’ve been seeing this person. You get along,

tragedy strikes

Take down the confederate flag over South Carolina

I

By JACK LYNCH

f you’ve been keeping one eye on the news recently or even no eyes on the news, you already know that America has been struck by yet another mass murder. June 18, a white gunman entered the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C. and opened fire on a Bible study, killing nine.

This was not a murder without a motive. The shooter, who is now in custody, can be seen in photographs on the internet wearing a jacket with an Apartheid-era South African patch. The church he chose to terrorize has been a symbol of resilience and pride for the local African American community for over a hundred years, and was once burned to the ground because its worshipers supported ending slavery. There’s no doubt about it: this was a hate crime. Yet, there is a sense of complacency running throughout the American people, rather than shock and outrage. America is the only major nation in the world with such a high rate of mass shootings, and we are so used to them that the South Carolina incident seems nothing more than commonplace. When President Obama addressed the nation in the wake of the event, he said, “I’ve had to make statements like this too many times.” And he’s right-he’s had to speak under similar circumstances over a dozen times during his presidency. And, unbelievably, the Confederate flag still flies in front of South Carolina’s statehouse at full mast, while all the other statehouse flags are lowered to half mast. Streets in Charleston, S.C. take their names from Confederate generals. If there was ever a doubt of racism’s existence in modern America, let it be put to rest, because in Charleston, South Carolina, the experience of being black is utterly different than that of being white, on an institutional level. So, to our friends in South Carolina, for God’s sake, take down your stars and bars.

What topic of conversation should every American be discussing right now? By Mike huson

Jordan Ross

Lowering the nonsense violence. I feel like slowly but surely, we're tearing the world apart. Nine people just died at the church. That's insane. Nine people shouldn't be dying in a church shooting.

Amanda Sparks

Reevaluating the prevalence of racism right now. Racism is never going to go away, but people just like to dismiss it like it's not real.

Othneil Oswald

We have questions to ask ourselves: What are we going to give ourselves to in this generation? Are we going to give ourselves to becoming what we want to be, or what the world needs us to be? Are we going to change the world for people who aren't ourselves? Are we only going to make it better for us, or are we going to make it better for everyone?

Dan Zhang

Care of the people around you. Really care of the people around you. If you do not care, do not pretend to care. Use your heart. Do not fake.

Hannah Thek

Put a higher importance on people, and not things. I feel like we focus too much on attaining things. I think we should focus more on people and their well-being.

Amber Hussain

Failure to acknowledge the things that we say we stand for, like how we say we stand for equality but there clearly is a divide.

SPORTS

Athlete to watch: Doyle likely to lead OSU defense By RYAN MCGLADE @rmcglade24 a

W

ith it officially being summer now, Ohio State Athletics are on a hiatus until August. That said, the first installment of UWeekly’s 2015 athlete to watch for resides in the backfield of the OSU men’s soccer team. Liam Doyle (a@LiamDoyle07) heads into his senior year looking to aid the Buckeyes in reaching the NCAA Tournament for consecutive seasons for the first time since the 2009 and 2010 campaigns. In his first year with OSU last fall, Doyle started in all 22 games while registering five goals and two assists. Three of his five goals came during conference play, tying for third in the Big Ten. The Isle of Man, U.K. native was lethal on set plays, as two of his goals came on free kicks while the other three came on penalty kicks. Although he only netted five, he made them count by leading the team with three game-winners. Doyle’s efforts as the center back for the Scarlet and Gray earned him second team honors on the Midwest All-Region Team, announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The Midwest region includes Division I teams from Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. He also garnered a first team All-Big Ten selection, marking his first career All-Big Ten accolade. During the 2014 team banquet, Doyle was given the Newcomer of the Year Award. The senior is no stranger to receiving laurels throughout his collegiate career. Prior to coming to Columbus, Doyle spent his freshman and sophomore seasons playing at Cincinnati State. As a freshman, he notched eight goals and 10 assists and was named second team All-Region. His sophomore year at Cincinnati State was certainly a decorated one. He received two All-American honors and was named Athlete of the Year, MVP and to three different first teams. On the field, Doyle led the Surge in points (39) with 13 goals and 13 assists. With Doyle being one of two seniors on the Buckeye defense for the upcoming campaign, expect him to be relied upon as a leader for his younger teammates. The other senior joining him is Kyle Culbertson, who also transferred to OSU earlier in his collegiate career. A year of playing experience at OSU should only help Doyle this season. He should have a better understanding of the system, allowing him to play with even more confidence. Additionally, he should have stronger chemistry with his fellow defenders, as there are six returning from last season’s roster. And much like last year, Doyle will anchor this defense and try to make his goalkeeper’s job as easy as possible. Considering his adorned collegiate career along with postseason experience, Doyle should rise as the leader of the Buckeye backfield during the 2015 campaign.

Maybe next year... What must be done for the Cavs to win the championship in 2016? By @TheBradPierron a

A

s the sun sets on a fantastic NBA season, the Cleveland Cavaliers find themselves in an all too familiar position: placing hope in next year. After a great run through the Eastern Conference, the Cavaliers were eliminated last week by the talented Golden State Warriors, and the championship drought remains. The Cavaliers have been around since 1970, the year the Beatles disbanded and the New York City Marathon began. And in their 45-year existence, the two wins in the 2015 NBA Finals are the only two such wins in franchise history. As if this deficiency was not enough, the last professional sports championship for Cleveland belongs to the 1964 Browns. So, along with all of Ohio, we ask, “How can the Cavs get Cleveland over the ‘hump’ in 2016?” First, after LeBron James likely declines his player option (to extend his current contract) for next year, it’s important that the Cavaliers re-sign him to a deal that appeases him. After taking care of the most important piece, Cleveland has a lot of money to spend and a slew of moves to make. Coming off injury, Kyrie Irving and Anderson Varejao will step right into their contract extensions beginning next year. Kevin Love and J.R. Smith are in the identical position as James, and the Cavaliers should be quick to do the same with those two players. If all of the aforementioned moves come to fruition, here are the players under contract for next year: Joe Harris, Brendan Haywood, Irving, James, Love, Mike Miller (likely to accept player option), Timofey Mozgov, Smith and Varejao. Aside from these players, tough decisions need to be made, regarding Matthew Dellavedova, Iman SEE UWEEKLY.COM FOR THE REST OF THIS STORY.

the candidates

Who will represent Ohio MLB in the All-Star game? By JIMMY BLOOMFIELD @_JBloomfield a

PER CASE

e have reached the time of the year where baseball carries the sports world. With Cincinnati hosting the All-Star Game this year, Ohio sports fans have quite a bit to look forward to in the Midsummer Classic. The Cleveland Indians will not have any starters in this year’s All-Star Game. Jason Kipnis, however, is a sure-fire candidate for Cleveland. He should be starting the game, but is currently third in the voting for American League second basemen. Entering Tuesday, he leads all AL second basemen batting average, hits, on-base percentage, OPS, triples, walks and WAR, and is second in doubles, slugging percentage and stolen bases. Michael Brantley is another strong choice. Among AL outfielders, Brantley ranks in the top five in average while leading the league in doubles through Monday. I would be surprised if Brantley does not make the roster, but he is certainly not a lock. In the Senior Circuit, the Reds also have a player who should be starting but likely will not. Todd Frazier has been the best third basemen in baseball this season, blasting more than 20 home runs while leading all third basemen in a number of other categories. Frazier will likely be the captain of the Home Run Derby for the National League team as well. Joey Votto is a fine candidate, but has no chance to get in ahead of Paul Goldschmidt, Adrian Gonzalez and Anthony Rizzo. Votto will only make the team if it carries four first basemen or if he makes the “Final Vote.” He does have the homepark advantage on his side and could sneak on to the roster. legends live forever

Three deserving Buckeyes up for the College Football Hall of Fame By @GEOFFHAMMERSLEY a

W

hen the National Football Foundation sent out the ballots for college football media members, three Ohio State Buckeyes were on that list. Keith Byars, Tom Cousineau and Jim Otis had fantastic careers at Ohio State. Byars and Otis were running backs that pushed the envelope to what was possible for a rusher. Cousineau was a linebacker that shaped the mid-1970s – when Woody Hayes roamed the sideline. I wrestled in my mind at who should get the call to immortality at the College Football Hall of Fame. The likes of Brian Urlacher and Ray Lewis graced the electronic ballot. I took Urlacher and left Lewis off my final ballot. Should I pick the three Buckeyes? Were they good enough? As I poured through the “ESPN College Football Encyclopedia” and started to compare, all three absolutely deserved to be selected. And here’s why:

Keith Byars (1982-85) Byars had a monstrous junior year that saw him rush for 1,764 yards. Additionally in his junior year, Byars was a runner-up to the Heisman Trophy (losing to Boston College’s Doug Flutie) and reached consensus All-American status. Once Byars left OSU, he (at the time) led the Buckeyes with more than 2,000 all-purpose yards. If we are judging athletes at the time they played, then Byars was absolutely one of the best in his era.

Tom Cousineau (1975-78)

When you are a two-time consensus All-American, the Hall of Fame must be calling. Cousineau set a school record in 1978 for most tackles with 211, and broke another school record for most tackles in a game with 29. After college, he was selected No. 1 overall in the 1979 NFL draft. When you get drafted No. 1, SEE UWEEKLY.COM FOR THE REST OF THIS STORY. keith byars

Rocking the Shoe

Buckeye Country Superfest excels with nostalgia, powerhouse lineup By @CAITLINESSIG a

B

lake Shelton summed up the essence of Buckeye Country Superfest when he told the crowd, “I don’t like when I go to a concert and artists play a whole bunch of new stuff that I don’t know.” The two-day festival in Ohio Stadium with a powerful lineup including Saturday headliners Shelton and Rascal Flatts and Sunday headliners Keith Urban and Kenny Chesney, featured mostly classic hits, which, as Shelton suggested, is ideal when seeing an artist live. Rascal Flatts is certainly a band that thrives on its older material. Hearing “Fast Cars and Freedom,” recorded more than 10 years ago, is enough reason alone to see the Columbus natives live. Classic tearjerkers “My Wish,” “Easy,” “God Bless The Broken Road” and “Here Comes Goodbye” took the audience back — and it’s those relatable, emotional songs that make you feel something that are so powerful to hear live. The band also lightened things up with “Summer Nights” and “Banjo” before landing on “Life Is A Highway” to close their set. Shelton brought a completely different vibe. He entered with “Neon Lights,” belting it out while playing the banjo. Shelton is an expert at working a crowd, and brings so much likable honesty to his near-every move. Raising a black solo cup, he told the crowd, “When I get nervous like I am right now, I tend to drink a little bit. Full disclosure.” Shelton is probably also the only artist who can call his fans “jackasses” and get away with it because he’s so charming. With the biggest smile on his face, Shelton sang “Doin’ What She Likes,” which felt like he was singing directly to his wife, country queen Miranda Lambert. Later, he mentioned stopping in Columbus almost 10 years ago with Rascal Flatts, and played music from that tour, including “Some Beach” and “Old Red.”

photos by david heasley/uw

Shelton is so wonderful live because he’s simple. He comes onstage with a certain amount of nonchalance, as if to say, “Listen to my music or don’t, I don’t care,” and he lets his talent take over. The crowd went wild shouting along to just about every word of his performance, from “Drink on It,” to “Who Are You When I’m Not Looking” and his latest hit, “Sangria.” Ohio Stadium never looked or sounded as beautiful as it did when Shelton sang his cover of Michael Bublé’s “Home,” with the lights off and the whole crowd lit up by cellphones. It was hard not to get chills. Sunday’s headliners were the perfect choices to kick off the first day of summer. Keith Urban launched into his set abruptly, taking the stage appropriately with “Long Hot Summer.” Urban’s hits tend to be the kind you can sing along to in the hot months with your car windows town, and that was the energy he brought to his set. He played everything a fan would want him to, from “Put You in a Song,” to “Somewhere in My Car,” “You Gonna Fly” and “Sweet Thing.” He worked the crowd with “You Look Good In My Shirt,” abandoning the stage to mingle with his fans. Urban also creates a rare experience for a fan at each tour stop, by holding auditions for someone to sing the female vocals on “We Were Us.” The Columbus-native who shared the spotlight with him was incredible, and it was a special moment to witness. cross from me at the bustling coffee shop sit Alex Harris and Alex Von Lehmden, the two 20-year-old guitarists of local band The Candescents, and beside me is bassist Cody Von Lehmden, who is still in high school at age 16. “I think when people see us live, what sets us apart is our youthful energy,” said Alex Von Lehmden said. “We’re all best friends, and I think you can really see that when we play live.” At first glance it might be easy to scoff at yet another young rock band in Columbus, but The Candescents have a certain underlying ferocity and drive that should not be underestimated. “I quit my job this summer. Cody moved in with me this summer. Everyone is full-force on songwriting,” Von Lehmden said. “I hope that when people see our band and they haven’t seen us before, they’re shocked. That’s our goal.” One of the band’s most memorable gigs was the legendary-yet-ultimately-doomed “Genderf*ck 2015,” a house party of epic proportions which encouraged attendees and performers to dress in drag, under the catchy slogan, “f--- gender roles and f--- you too.” “We were wondering how many audience members would be willing to cross-dress, but we were just blown away,” said Von Lehmden. Unfortunately, when too many people showed up, event organizers had to shut down the party, making The Candescents the only band to actually play that night. “As bad as I feel about the floor almost caving in, it was an incredible experience,” Von Lehmden said. Throughout my conversation with the band, Harris and Cody Von Lehmden were mostly soft spoken, only chiming in occasionally. However, Harris did note some of the band’s major influences. “Taylor Swift, unironically. The Strokes, I guess, The Beatles. Those are my top ones,” Harris said. Though The Candescents don’t have a show lined up until August, be sure to check out their new single “Back of Your Hand” for a taste of high-quality local rock.

Gamers unite: best of the electronic entertainment expo By @ADAMAMBRO a

B

efore getting into the highlights of this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, better known as E3, I’d like to give myself a pat on the back for getting three of my four predictions correct. I correctly guessed a “Fallout 4” announcement, an Xbox One price cut (this was a technicality, as they reduced the 500GB model price) and a re-reveal of “The Last Guardian.” The only thing I missed was a “Battletoads” announcement; I guess I should have known that the series has no relevance anymore and no one cares about a “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” rip-off. To the matter at hand, though, this year’s E3 was jam-packed with exciting reveals so let’s get down to it.

Fallout 4: With the announcement that the long salivated-over game is not only real (after a couple years of fake leaks), but set to release on Nov. 10, Bethesda Game Studios sent fans into a fervor last week. This was by far the most exciting game to be shown at E3, as the level depth the game has to offer is quite something to behold. Game director Todd Howard’s previous works, “Skyrim” and “Fallout 3,” should give fans a good idea of what to expect here.

Final Fantasy 7 (remake): While not the best “Final Fantasy” game (that distinction belongs to either “Final Fantasy 4” or “Final Fantasy 6”), “Final Fantasy 7” is without question one of the most influential JRPGs ever released. For years, fans have yearned for a remake of the beloved game due to the severely outdated graphics of the “PlayStation” original, and this year they finally got their wish. The game is years away from release—2017 at the earliest—but knowing it’s actually happening is exciting nonetheless.

Just Cause 3: As a fan of “Just Cause 2,” it was nice knowing the next iteration game is coming Dec. 1 this year, but hardly merited a second thought, that is, until the in-game madness was demoed across the web and “Just Cause 3” became impossible to ignore. This might be the greatest game reimaging of a non-existent 1980s B-movie action adventure film. The sheer amount of chaos and destruction is so ridiculous and over the top that there’s no reason not to love what Avalanche Studios has done here.

The Last Guardian: Much like the announcement of “Final Fantasy 7,” the re-reveal of “The Last Guardian” was an emotional experience for fans of the Team Ico production. This game was originally revealed at the 2009 E3, but then got stuck in developmental hell and was subjected to constant cancellation rumors. It was a surreal moment to once again see the boy and his giant bird dog traverse a beautifully still and unnerving world, the signature of a Team Ico game. In short, the 2016 release date cannot come soon enough.

THE BILLION EFFECT Local startup seeks to change the crowdfunding game By @ADAMAMBRO a

U

sing crowdfunding for a potentially great idea can be a risky prospect. As the creator of said idea, you have to rely heavily on a stellar marketing campaign or get by on sheer luck. As a backer, you have to trust that the concept is going to actually come to fruition. Enter Columbus team Billion, a startup that came together just this past April after winning first place and $4000 in seed funding at GiveBackHack. But this isn’t just Kickstarter 2.0. Billion’s eponymous bracket tournament style crowdfunding site is aimed at giving back to the community. “The global community can choose who wins by donating to the movement of their choosing,” said CEO and Founder Eileen Guan. “Through each iteration, the movement with the most funds raised moves on. The funds from the losing movements are then reallocated to another movement of the donor’s choosing. We want to combine the power of competition and crowdfunding to make a huge impact on the globe.” But while Billion has its long-term eye set on global initiatives and solutions, its initial phase will focus solely on C-Bus. “Our first iteration of Billion will be Billion Columbus, so we are looking for any idea that will impact the Columbus community,” Guan said. “There’s something special about Columbus. I don’t think there’s a better place for Billion to grow.” A valid concern for some regarding this unique tournament style of crowdfunding is what happens to the monetary funds if the project that was initially backed doesn’t advance. “[Backers] will be given the choice to decide where their money can be reallocated to,” Guan said. “The donors stay involved from the beginning to the end. The idea is that from the beginning, you are contributing to the overall ‘Billion Fund’ that will end up going to some movement that impacts the most people.” In other words, as a backer your donation will

EMILY LEBSOCK

Necklace $20 Forever 21

Fifth-year photography student Emily Lebsock doesn’t let a college budget stop her from looking stylish every day. When she isn’t photographing what surrounds her, she’s blogging about the latest trends for College Fashionista, a website for fashion-conscious college students. Whether she’s sporting layers of color or an edgy, minimal outfit, she always makes sure that her ensemble is a reflection of her mood and a representation of her personality.

What words would you use to describe your style? I would say funky, sometimes basic, easy and colorful. How does your style reflect your personality? I feel like my style is always based on my mood that day. So if I’m feeling really fun, I’ll layer on a bunch of colors. Or if I’m feeling more subdued or laid back, I’ll throw on something more neutral. I feel like whatever I wear always reflects how I feel. Do you have one consistent style, or does it change on a daily basis? It changes day to day. Sometimes I’ll be more into men’s wear and I’ll wear something like that. Or some days I’m like, ‘I just really want to wear dresses for a week.’ It just really varies. I don’t like to limit myself to one specific style.

watch $20 Target Bracelets Handmade

Why is fashion important to you? I feel like it’s the best way to express yourself, always. That’s how I’ve always felt about it. Because I mean, being in a creative field, you can express yourself through drawing or painting, but I feel like an outfit, it says more about me than anything else I’ve ever done because it’s on you. It’s how you reflect yourself.

Dress $14 Forever 21

Who, or what, inspires your style? That’s hard because a lot of things inspire me, like art or what I see in the world, or magazines … a lot of bloggers. I look to Victoria’s Secret models and a lot of fashion bloggers and just kind of the people around me. What are some of your favorite brands and places to shop? Forever 21, because it fits in my budget. I’ve been recently really into thrift stores a lot. I’ve found really good brand names for cheap. Like Rag O’ Rama, I really love right now. More boutiques, a lot, is what I‘ve been shopping. What style advice do you have for readers? Don’t be afraid to try new trends that seem scary. Always just try it and see how you like it, and see if you can make it work for yourself.

FOOD & DRINK

paradise city

Ginger juice:

5 drinks that will transport you to the beach

S

ummer time is often associated with going to the pool, hanging out with friends and just having a good time. Going to the beach is almost everyone’s favorite thing to do in the summer, however some of us college kids are stuck at or around Ohio State because of summer classes, internships and jobs and don’t have time to go to the beach. Fear not, fellow Buckeyes. There is a way to cure this beach-craving, summertime sadness! In fact, many bars that surround campus offers many drinks that will make Columbus seem like paradise. Try me. Cazuela’s Margarita – No summer is complete without a margarita, and Cazuela’s serves amazing margaritas right off of North Campus on High Street. It may not look like much, but this little Mexican restaurant serves up some delicious and affordable drinks. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very festive, yet laid back. While sipping on a margarita, whether it is a classic lime or strawberry, on the patio covered in colorful banners, you will immediately be taken away to the beautiful sandy beaches of Cancun, with a nice Columbus breeze and enchanting Hispanic music. Cantina’s “Pineapple Punch” – This fruity and colorful drink screams summer with infusions of pineapple vodka, orange juice, pineapple juice, and cranberry juice. By merely sampling this yellow and pink drink, the blended flavors will send you directly to tropical paradise with palm trees, blue water, and a warm sun. 24

Local Bar’s “Arnie Cocktail” – Local Bar does this classic drink right. Having only mango vodka, pineapple juice, and sprite, this simple concoction is the perfect drink for hot summer days with friends, whether it is a refresher after beach volleyball or just a cooling drink whilst lying in the hot, summer sun. Of course, there is no beach in Columbus, but this drink will definitely make you think of one. Curio and Harvest’s “Front Porch Tea” – This unique bar and Pizzeria in German Village knows how to make amazing cocktails. Curio and Harvest is the perfect place to hang out and relax with friends after school or work. Sit outside with a hot and cheesy pizza with a Front Porch Tea: a delicious cocktail made with Oyo stone- fruit vodka, lemonade, and iced tea. You can’t even taste the alcohol! So sit back, relax, and enjoy this marvelous cocktail and it will immediately remind you of summer. Pint House’s “Endless Summer” – Pint House is a hip and Modern bar in Short North that is a favorite for many college students because they are serious about their drinks! Endless Summer truly stands up to its name. This drink is made with ciroc vodka, muddled fresh pineapple, cilantro syrup, as well as coconut water. By drinking Endless Summer, images if golden Hawaiian beaches will pop in your head, making Columbus truly seem like paradise. -Ashley Wilkinson

I

t’s the time of the year to bathe in the sun and enjoy the pleasant land of Ohio. Pick your favorite book to burn with you in the heat. The weather is in the eighties and you can’t stop wearing those barelythere-clothes to expose your bare skin for the world to see. You’ve worked hard to maintain that body, and it’s time you let it show. But don’t be consumed by a high-calorie milkshake. Instead, hydrate with this iced skinny beverage. It’s ginger juice time.

Skinny Ginger Juice Recipe Grate a handful of ginger and soak it overnight in water. Make sure the ratio of the ginger to water is 1:8. Once you made that calculation, go do your thing and wake up the next morning. When you are up, add a cup full of sugar in the mixture. Let simmer for about an hour, strain it, and then chill it. After that, add a dash of vanilla extract, a few drops of lime if you may, and then mix it with ice. Finally, top the beverage with some seltzer (and/or lemon and lime) and enjoy the heat.

Delicious eats on the cheap

A

s hard-working and poor college students, summer is especially hard on us. All we want to do is have fun, travel, enjoy the great food and drinks that Columbus has to offer us – unfortunately, we’re still college students with empty pockets. Low and behold the ultimate list of places to enjoy with specials that are $5 and under. Yes, you read that right. Read on and eat well (for cheap), my friends. Bodega – Located on 1044 N High St, Bodega serves a $1 grill cheese every Monday night. Not only is the grilled cheese delicious, you can add a tomato on your sandwich with a side of tomato soup for a total bill of $4.75. Bar Louie – Located in the Short North on 504 N Park St., Bar Louie serves a $1 burger every Tuesday night. It’s an ideal spot to watch a hockey game, enjoy a few drinks and indulge on those “almost priceless” burgers. You can add toppings on your burger for 50c per topping to make it even more scrumptious. Press Grill – Also located at the Short North on 741 N High St, Press Grill has $1.50 tacos every Wednesdays. It’s a cost effective meal to have 3 tacos for $4.50 and be quite satisfied. I hear their cuatro tacos are the real deal. Buffalo Wild Wings – Located right by campus on 2151 N High St, Buffalo Wild Wings (AKA B Dubs) is a great spot to gorge on some wings and enjoy a football game. Every Thursday, boneless wings are 55 cents per wing. That means you can fill your tummy with 9 boneless wings and still not make it to $5. Figlio – Last but not the least, Figlio, located on 1369 Grandview Ave, has happy hour Monday-Saturday between 5-6 p.m. So if your Friday isn’t quite complete, get here and enjoy renowned wood-fired pizzas at this quaint, but cozy modern Italian restaurant. I highly recommend their truffle mushroom pizzas. So now that you know this, what are you waiting for? Get out there and socialize. And for the love of god, don’t forget to tip your waiter.

What bar, club, growler spot, etc. do you want to know more about? #TellUWeekly and it could end up here!

FROM STELLA WITH LOVE

Did you say sex without orgasm?

S

urprise then shock were what I felt when my best friend told me she had never had an orgasm. She isn’t new to sex and has had several sexual partners, so how has she not had at least one orgasm? Though, supposedly, not experiencing the intense and pleasurable climax during sex is common among girls. This is such a tragedy, like what’s point of sex?! Of course there are many reasons why females have sex that range from personal issues to boredom to looking for the princes that’ll make them orgasm. Though, ladies, know that you aren’t alone. Help is here! I know exactly how you can finally experience an orgasm, because you deserve it. Don’t let these boys have all the fun!

Many of you are only looking for a good time, but don’t sacrifice your own pleasure. It’s time you treat yourself like a queen--in bed!

In order to put yourself first, figure out your own body. Explore where your G-spot is. You can do this by touching yourself or paying attention to what feels good the next time you’re fingered. Direct your guy and tell him where to move. This’ll help you understand your body better, which you’ll need in order to bring out your inner sex goddess. Next time you’re in bed, take control. That sounds scary but sleeping with someone is not the time for insecurities. Get on top, get him in and start moving. You’ll feel it and you’re gonna love it. If he refuses to let you on top, then find a new dude. He sucks. If he’s into it, he’ll move with your body 34

and with every push and pull, you’ll get closer to coming. Position matters a lot. My best friend told me her favorite position was doggy style, which is a difficult way to have an orgasm. It gives you the strongest sensations, but Cowgirl and Face Off are the easiest ways to come. Anyone worth your time will appreciate a strong female in bed. This’ll also show just how good you are at sex and word spreads fast. Being amazing in bed is never a bad thing, girls. Though, you may be missing out on orgasms because of the guys you’re sleeping with. If he’s a d-bag just wanting to nut off and doesn’t wait for his lady to come first, kick his ass to curb. There are other guys out there wishing to give you euphoria—and, no, you don’t need to make love for sex to feel euphoric. Find the right chemistry with someone. Mutual attraction will lead to sexual tension and voilà! Sex is tens times better because of the apparent chemistry. Don’t be afraid to tell guys they suck in the sack! They need to hear it more often so they’ll finally discover that sex isn’t just about them. It takes two and both parties should walk away (or wake up) satisfied. Next time you’re sleeping with someone, go after what you deserve! There’s no shame in wanting instant gratification too. Have fun, ladies. Love, Stella
