LIFE

A

fter five years of watching (614) Magazine, our parent publication, have all the fun with its annual ColumBEST poll (AKA the biggest and best poll in the capital city) we decided to bring the love to campus. As Buckeyes, the only thing we love more than competition, is winning. So let the games begin. Here are the results of our first annual Best of Campus poll.

Written by Thailyr Scrivner, Emmy Wells and Chelsea Castle

the write-ins best professor Professor Robert Zellmer

This was certainly a close race, and proof that OSU has more beloved and respected teachers than one might originally think. It's also a little surprising, and perhaps a testament to his skills, that chemistry (you know, everyone's favorite subject ...) would be the cream the crop. Way to go, Zellmer! Tied for 2nd: Nicole Kraft (journalism) and Tom Stewart (communication) Tied for 3rd: Bruce Bellner (economics) and Jon Moe (English)

Best elective yoga

No surprise here – yoga was the only class I constantly battled a waitlist for when I was at OSU three years ago. It's hard to turn down credit hours to relax, stretch and learn to feel good all around. The runners up are badass classes, too. If you still have time, don't miss out on these! 2. History of Rock n' Roll 3. Chocolate Science

Best Hangover breakfast Hang over easy

This restaurant has definitely defined itself as a campus staple, providing diner-style breakfast foods available all day long. Along with an array of comfort foods, Hang Over Easy also has a lengthy beer selection to cure just about anything. 2. Buckeye Donuts 3. Waffle House

Best Coffee Shop Starbucks

The always seemingly long lines at the chain’s campus location are a pretty good indicator that students can’t seem to get enough. Dear Starbucks: OSU loves you a latte. 2. Brennen’s 3. Stauf’s

Best Pizza Adriaticos

The only thing better about New York than Columbus is their pizza, at least in the way Adriatico’s does it. Not to mention it will come with some of the biggest pepperonis you’ve ever seen in your life. 2. Catfish Biff’s 3. Hounddog’s

Best Food Truck Mikey’s Late Night Slice

Cheezus! Mikey sure knows what he’s doing. The only time the term “slut” is welcome with open arms is when referring to the famous slut sauce you want slathered on your late night slice. 2. The Gyro Guy 3. Thyme and Change

Best Asian Restaurant Tai’s

Even though it’s a little ways off campus, the generous portions are enough to make it worth it. The worst part is you might find yourself unable to decide between the noodles and sushi to which we say, both. 2. Panda Express 3. No.1 Chinese Food

Best Delivery Service OrderUp

It doesn’t matter what you want to eat. Whether it’s Mexican, Chinese or Tom+Chee (like the picture), OrderUp makes your dinner wishes come true, and you don’t even have to put pants on. Well, maybe you should when you answer the door. 2. GrubHub 3. Cafe Courier

Best Sweet Treats Buckeye Donuts

A campus icon, Buckeye Donuts has been serving up fresh donuts daily since 1969 with specialties like, well, the buckeye donut. Open 24/7 you can satisfy that craving for sweetness any time you want. 2. Insomnia Cookies 3. Jeni’s

Best Wings Wings Over

The trip down Lane, or delivery, will be well worth it when you’re devouring some of the larger wings and boneless wings you can find around, hand battered and smothered in sauces that pack various heat. 2. Buffalo Wild Wings 3. Roosters

Best Quick Lunch Jimmy John’s

Praise Jimmy John’s for its freaky fast delivery when that hangover strikes every Saturday and Sunday and you need that Giant Club NOW. With a good variety of both indulgent and diet-friendly options there’s a pretty good chance Jimmy John’s is a justifiable staple in the Ohio State diet. 2. Chipotle 3. Pita Pit

Best New Restaurant Blaze Pizza

Best Place for Late Night Eats Raising Cane’s

Stop into the campus Cane’s on any given weekend after 11p.m. and you’ll see the reason they call it the Caniac. People go crazy for this and will stop at nothing to get their hands on a perfectly buttered piece of Texas Toast and dip everything including their fingers into that secret Cane’s sauce. 2. Buckeye Donuts 3. Catfish Biff’s

(left) photo by allie misch

With a pizza assembly line, what’s not to love? Busy students have taken a liking to the fast-casual pizza, which can be ready for consumption in a matter of two minutes in the super hot pizza dome. 2. Tom and Chee 3. The Oxley Tavern & Grillery photo by emmy wells

Best Overall Restaurant Eddie George’s

A Heisman Trophy winner opens up a Heisman of a restaurant. Not a joke, just your own fact. This is one of the fewer places near campus with a cool, sit-down style restaurant with a ton of TV’s to catch up on all the games. 2. Mad Mex 3. Ethyl & Tank

Best Hidden Gem Restaurant Mama’s Pasta & Brew

Known as favorite little OSU’s secret, Mama’s Pasta & Brew is an experience unlike any other you’ll find at a campus restaurant. With competitive dart leagues, wacky fashioned decor and homemade lasagna like only mama can cook. 2. Katalina’s 3. PJ’s

Best Ice Cream Jeni’s

Jeni is one of the few, maybe the only, ladies who can throw ingredients together that make you first say WTF but you’re willing to give it a try because this girl knows her stuff. Jeni’s is a Columbus must-visit that bakes, mixes, chops, toasts and blends together some of the most uniquely crafted ice cream creations that just have a way of working out. 2. Graeters 3. Best Overall Bar Ethyl and Tank

It was a close call, but campus deemed Ethyl and Tank campus’ best bar. The location is prime, the food and drinks are delicious and hello – drink specials every day? Let’s not forget the Bloody Mary bar, upstairs arcade and café. You win, Ethyl and Tank. You win. 2. Too’s 3. 4th Street Bar & Grill

Ethyl and Tank also won: Best Trivia Night, Best Happy Hour and Best Bar Food

Best Karaoke Night 4th Street Bar & Grill

Best Sports Bar Chumley’s

Whether you go for Schooner night or to watch the big game, Chumley’s is a long-time campus favorite. The food and booze options are seemingly endless, and when a bar is two-tiered, you know it’s going to be voted the best. 2. Eddie George’s 3. Buffalo Wild Wings

When it comes to belting out songs you absolutely can’t sing, campus agreed that 4th Street is the best place to do it. From their patio to their craft beer selection, Fourth Street is a definite campus favorite. 2. Woody’s Tavern 3. Oldfield’s

Best Dive Bar Too's

Too’s isn’t about class – we all know that. Too’s is, however, about a good time. Buried beneath the rest of the world, only the true bar flies wind up here. But if you’re just in it for the cheap drinks and a sloppy night, who cares about the rest? 2. Bier Stube 3. The Library

4th Street also won: Best Beer Selection 2. Chumley’s 3. Short North Pint House

Too’s also won: Best Bartending Crew 2. 4th Street 3. Ethyl & Tank

Best Drinking Patio The O

The O’s patio is a beloved Buckeye spot and decidedly the best on campus. You can’t beat the prices or the tendency to refer to it as “your” bar, and the temptation to spend every nice day there drinking on the patio is real. 2. Out-R-Inn 3. Chumley’s

The O also won: Best Game Day Bar 2. Chumley’s 3. Out-R-Inn

Best Alt. Transportation Uber

Finally, a solution to going out and drinking with your friends and getting home safely – with no drunk driving. For our nights out to the Short North, Park Street and the city beyond, the readers have spoken very clearly on this one: it's become obvious that when it comes to transportation, Uber is the way to go. 2. COTA 3. Car2Go

Best LGBTQ Bar Union Best Local Clothing Store Homage

If you don’t own the signature soft, vintage-looking, hipster-inspired shirt from Homage, do you actually live in Columbus? Homage is a longtime C-Bus favorite – where else can you get a shirt that tells the world how awesome our city is? Almost half of voters agreed that Homage is number one when it comes to the best local clothing shop. 2. Pitaya 3. Clothing Underground

Union Cafe provides the ultimate restaurant/bar experience. If you’re looking to get off the main drag of campus, Union is the perfect spot. With a patio overlooking the bustling sidewalks of The Short North and an impressive cocktail menu, it’s no wonder we voted Union the top LGBTQ bar. 2. Axis 3. Wall Street Nightclub photo by megan leigh barnard

Hottest Sport Team (Male) Football

Now officially the Undisputed Hottest Sport Team. Add that to the list of titles this team has won this past season, all while wearing those undeniably tight pants and tiny shirts. (Lookin’ at you, Ezekiel …) 2. Baseball 3. Soccer

Best Place to Nap The Oval

Best OSU SociaLite @OSUsophomore

That annoying girl in your stats class who drives you to consider vicious sub-tweeting? No worries, @OSUSophomore probably tweeted about her (or a representation of her) so you don’t have to worry about looking bad. The snarky yet relatable tweets raked in enough votes to earn the parody account the title of best campus socialite. 2. OSU Crush 3. Fake Lantern

Oh, sweet Oval Beach. While it’s good for so many things, most of us can agree that one of the best things to do there is take a nap. Whether you’re lying in the shade under a tree or soaking up some rays, The Oval is undoubtedly campus’ favorite spot to unwind. 2. Thompson Library 3. The Union

The Oval was also voted: Best Place to People Watch 2. The Union 3. Thompson Library

Favorite Overall OSU Celebrity Urban Meyer

Hottest Sport Team (Female) Volleyball

Urban’s contract was recently extended through 2020 (shocker), and we’ve yet to hear any complaints on that. He’s taken the football team to number one in the NCAA and, as the majority has stated, is number one in our hearts. 2. Brutus 3. Ezekiel Elliot

Spandex clearly help show off these ladies best (ass)sets. Not only do they look good, but their game this past season was pretty great too. 2. Gymnastics 3. Soccer

Best Tattoo Parlor Evolved Body Art

If you’re out and about in Columbus and see a really sick tattoo, there’s a good chance it was done by one of the artists at Evolved. Known for their unique designs and vibrant colors, they’ll create tattoos even your grandma will approve of. Well, don’t hold us to that. But between the tattoos, piercings and jewelry offered at Evolved, campus decided it’s by far the best tattoo parlor in town. 2. Short North Tattoo 3. Memento

Best RPAC Fitness Class Yoga

There’s just something about yoga. It’s challenging and if you’re impatient, it can make you want to punch a brick wall. But it’s also refreshing. It’s a low-key way to work out, and it’s the ultimate de-stresser. Plus, yoga has the tendency to make you feel much more cultured than you probably are, and that’s something we all love. 2. Circuit Cycling 3. Zumba

Best Liquor Store Campus State Liquors

Best Live Music Venue LC Pavilion

When our favorite band announces a Columbus show, we all hope it’s at the LC. Whether indoors or out, the LC won’t disappoint. There’s not a bad seat in the house, and the sound system is on point. 2. Newport 3. Skully’s

Whether you’ve got money to blow on top shelf booze or you’ve decided to forego paying utilities for that bottom shelf beauty, Campus State Liquors is there to sell you either. Its convenient location and all it has to offer students, regardless of their bank account, earned it the well-deserved title of best campus liquor store. 2. Kroger 3. Best OSU Tradition/ Best Yearly Event Mirror Lake Jump

OSU never feels more like home on nights like this, surrounded by thousands of your classmates all getting together for a common cause, that just happens to be in a questionably sanitary lake. But you don’t care; you will jump in that lake with pride for your school. You will take hypothermia head on for the sake of beating *ichigan. 2. *ichigan Rivalry 3. Oval Beach

Best OSU Landmark The Shoe

Best Student Musician/Band TBDBITL

It’s where undisputed champions play, where memories are made and where we truly became Buckeyes. The iconic stadium is recognizable whether you’re driving past it on the highway or watching college football on T.V. It’s without question that The Shoe is the best landmark on OSU’s campus. 2. The Oval 3. Mirror Lake

When you give yourself a name like The Best, you come to expect nothing less. What other university has national coverage of their band almost every year? During most events halftime is a time to load up on snacks but here fans wouldn’t dare miss TBDBITL’s performance. 2. The Ohio State of Mind 3. Buck That! photo by david heasley/uw

Alpha Phi cornered this competition the same way they do 15th and Indianola with their beast of a beautiful, historic house. “The one to be” ladies can be seen hosting events servicing women’s heart health and the Alpha Phi Foundation. 2. Alpha Chi Omega 3. Alpha Gamma Delta

The brothers of OSU’s Asian American Cultural Fraternity might find it a little easier to spread their word of cultural awareness while holding the No. 1 spot. Is it possible for dragons to breathe both excellence and fire? 2. Sigma Epsilon Phi 3. Delta Xi Phi Multicultural Sorority, Inc.

Two years is all it took for the brothers of Delta Sigma Phi to make a mark after being inactive for more than a decade. things to never say in an interview

e’re often given advice as to what to say during a job interview. Very rarely are we advised against what not to say. However, there are many phrases and answers you could be using that are actually shooting yourself in the foot. Wonder why after multiple interviews you still don’t have a job? It might be because you used one or more of these interview answer pitfalls.

First Impressions:

“I’m really nervous.” Even if you’re shaking and feeling sick to your stomach, don’t tell them. More than likely they’ll be able to tell if you are anyway. But confirming that fact is also confirming your lack of confidence; a big negative to most employers. “I love your top!” Complementing the interviewer might seem like a good idea, but it can come off as inappropriate or just plain creepy. “I really need this job.” When asked why you would like the job, don’t come off as desperate. Just like with dating, employers don’t see desperation as a good thing. They want to feel special, like your only goal in life is to get a job at their company.

Answering the tough questions:

With any question, don’t fill it with industry jargon. You may think the interviewer will be impressed, but not all jargon is the same in every company and the likelihood you’ll sound like an idiot is really high. Plus, you’ll come off as arrogant assuming they understand you completely. “I don’t have much experience but…” Stop, while this might be true and while you might want to come off as truthful there are other ways to relay the same message and not come off as viewing yourself negatively. Take what experience you do have and discuss how you can transfer that experience to this job.

Leaving them wanting more?:

“I hated my old job, here’s why…” Don’t. Bad mouth. Anyone. Just don’t. Even if you had the world’s worst boss and had a horrible experience, try and spin it as neutral as possible. “No.” While negative answers should be avoided at all cost, when the interviewer asks if you have any questions and you simply reply no, it comes off bad. It shows you didn’t do any research about the company, and might even come off as arrogant.

“I try too hard.” “I’m a perfectionist.” Employers know you’re full of it if you answer “What’s your biggest weakness” with any form of this answer.

I

most meaningful careers

f we lived in a perfect world, all the jobs that were the most meaningful and helped the most would be paid the most. Sadly, we do not live in that world. Forbes using the site Payscale has created a list of the most and least meaningful jobs. Both lists have a mix of high and low paying jobs, but arguably those on the most meaningful list did not choose their career for the financial benefits. Stay tuned to next week's issue where we'll share the least meaningful jobs. 20

Second impressions matter, too Mastering the "Thank You" note

M

any believe that the ‘Thank You’ note is fading away into the past, something that people used to do before computers and cellphones. Don't trick yourself into thinking that. They're the perfect way to make a good second impression and set you apart (particularly from those who think they don't need to write thank you notes). The best judge of when to write a thank you note is to think, "Did I take up a professionals time?" if the answer is yes, write one. After asking someone to write a letter of recommendation, it's expected to thank them, but should you actually receive the scholarship, grant, internship etc. that you were applying for, sending them a thank you note leaves a good lasting impression. Writing a thank you note after completing an internship falls into this same category. You never know when you might need that person again. The instance that people don't take advantage enough is the post interview thank you note. Writing a thank you note after an interview is a very good second impression, it makes the employee remember you just a moment more than they would have, it'll help you stand out from the others, and shows professionalism and respect. You'll want to send this as soon as you can. And don't worry. While a hand written card shows another level of commitment, an emailed thank you note shows at least more thoughtfulness than none at all.

Sara Mitchell Communications & engagement manager

The Women's Fund of Central Ohio Part 2 of 2

B

e bold. – Keyholder opened my eyes to a community of courageous, powerful women I never knew existed. One that I wanted to join. So I e-mailed the President and CEO and asked her to get coffee. Looking back, I'm not sure what gave me the confidence to email this woman who so boldly stood in front of 2,500 people on a shared stage with Goldie Hawn and ask her to Cup O Joe, but I did. And so began the most unexpected and extraordinary mentorship. Key takeaway: Don’t let fear hold you back. Move out of your own way, take risks and go after the things you want, no matter how scary they may seem. Believe in the results. I never would have guessed that four years after attending my first Keyholder event, I would be wearing the headset and running the show’s production. My seat in the theatre might be a little different now, but whether front of house or backstage the energy remains the same. Key takeaway: Don’t give up if an opportunity doesn’t present itself right away. You may not see the outcome immediately after attending an event, but you never know how it make affect you down the road. Jump in with both feet and see where it takes you. Sara Mitchell was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. After graduating from Emerson College in Boston with a BFA in Writing, Literature, and Publishing, Sara returned to Columbus to start a career in communications. Now the Communications & Engagement Manager at the Women’s Fund of Central Ohio, she is working towards building the organizations capacity and reach for social change, and raising awareness around issues affecting women and girls both globally and locally. Litter bugs: They really bug me

I

By Ty anderson

n honor of Earth Day, I thought it would be appropriate to use this week to discuss a topic that is very near and dear to my heart. A topic that lights a fire in my soul and sends me swirling into a raging inferno of unsubstantiated rage and overwhelming loathing. It is an act so repulsive, so unforgivably disgusting, that I find difficulty in simply discussing it. That topic, of course, is littering.

UWEEKLY • April 22, 2015

I remember learning at a very young age that the standard fine for littering in Ohio was as much as $500, and I remember wishing at a very young age that it was more. I wished that it was more, because the threat of a $500 fine doesn’t even begin to intimidate offenders. It doesn’t even begin to make people think twice about flicking a cigarette butt out of their car window and onto an abandoned interstate highway, or about taking the last gulp of their Diet Dr. Pepper before tossing the crumpled can onto a nearby curb. Litter makes our planet ugly. It turns our streets into trash bins and our parks into landfills. Sure, a forlorn candy wrapper or empty water bottle is easy enough to remove. Some saintly volunteer might pick it up and transfer it to a more appropriate receptacle, but that’s not really my issue with littering. The aesthetic aspect is annoying, but I can live with a few pieces of trash dotting the lawns of my otherwise glorious Mother Earth. What bothers me most, rather, is the attitude. The thought process that justifies wadding up a used tissue and releasing it into the rippling breeze. It is a precursor for more serious acts of ecological crime, and it signals a deeper disrespect for this single, exhaustible planet upon which we all live. The home that we all share. A lack of respect for the severity of littering hints at a lack of respect for deforestation. For oil spills, melting icecaps and dying species. Failure to see that is simply hypocrisy. Our ecological situation becomes more and more dire each and every year, and yet people fail to see it. If we are going to tolerate lesser violations such as littering, then I don’t see how we can even begin to convince people to concern themselves with the bigger picture. Whether you believe in Global Warming or Climate Change, whether or not you mind the littered streets and sidewalks, and whether or not you care about the safety and comfort of future generations—you should care about the quality of the Earth right now. You should care that our water sources are contaminated, and that our once pristine and untouched rainforests are now barren fields of nothingness. We are all made from this Earth, and we will someday return to it. If the Earth is contaminated, then so are we. If our resources are being depleted, then we too, are being depleted. So please, not that the vibrancy and beauty of our world is vanishing, and do your part to stop it. Please do not contribute to the problem by flinging your used condom onto a University District back alley or spitting chewed up gum onto the Oval walkways. Thank you.

qb situation a hot topic, even at the white house By @KyleRowland a

W

ASHINGTON – Ohio State’s quarterback derby is even being discussed at the White House. During the Buckeyes’ national championship celebration on Monday, President Obama made sure to identify the unlikely 15-game run that included three different quarterbacks. “First they lost Braxton Miller, a Heisman contender, before the season even started,” Obama said. “Then J.T. Barrett, Big Ten quarterback of the year steps in, and has an extraordinary run. But then he breaks his ankle against a certain ‘Team Up North.’” The reference to archrival Michigan drew a hearty round of applause from the approximate 300 people in attendance – players, coaches, senators, congressmen and other dignitaries. Obama continued: “And then we learned Car-

dale Jones is not your average third-string quarterback. Anybody with a nickname like ‘12 Gauge’ has to be taken seriously.” Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said he was having an Oval Office meeting with the president following the ceremony to discuss the Buckeyes’ quarterback quandary.

“I’m going to ask him some questions,” Meyer said smiling.

It’s long been a tradition for the president to invite national champions to the White House. For Meyer, who made his third trip after winning multiple titles at Florida, it’s become old hat. Meyer’s annual visit to Washington isn’t dissimilar from the annual White House Easter egg roll. Just as an Obama visit to Ohio seemed like a daily routine during his two successful campaigns for the presidency. He didn’t forget the way to

Ohioans’ hearts, entering the East Room with a boisterous “O-H!” The attendees giddily reciprocated, responding with an “I-O!” Obama singled out Miller, Barrett, Jones, Joey Bosa, Evan Spencer and Ezekiel Elliott for their work ethic, perseverance and outstanding performance. Spencer was still all smiles a half hour after the ceremony ended. “It meant the world,” he said.” All of us, we work so hard all offseason. For him to point me out, and I did do really well, and I did work my butt off, especially being from the President of the United States, it felt really good.” “You have to soak in everything. This entire experience has been amazing. It’s a present for all of our hard work throughout the season.”

takeaways from OSU Spring Game By @RMCGLADE24 a

T

hree months later and Ohio State football is right back at it. Although Saturday's spring game was only a scrimmage, the number of fans in attendance made for the appearance of a regular season game. The defending national champions played in front of 99,391 fans — a national record for a spring game. While many were in awe by that figure, the team still had a game to play. Here are three takeaways from Saturday's scrimmage.

1.) No shortage of ammunition for 12 Gauge – Quarterback Cardale Jones continued

where he left off last season in not being afraid to throw the deep ball. Eleven of Jones’ 42 pass attempts went for 15 yards or farther with only four of them being completed. Two of said completions, however, went for touchdown passes of 58 yards and 37 yards to Corey Smith each time. Following the game, Jones explained why it was enjoyable to play in Saturday’s contest. “… And for me to be able to have all the warm reps with the guys who I think are going to be able to make plays for us in the fall, I mean, it was pretty fun,” Jones said after the game. “And I hope I can carry it over to the fall.”

2.) Stephen Collier getting his feet wet – Sophomore quarterback Stephen Collier

was the signal caller for the Scarlet Team Saturday. Collier had rough patches in the first half, but seemed to get settled in during the second. On the final drive of the first half, the Georgia native overthrew receivers Jeff Greene and Terry McLaurin. He bounced back, though, and hit a well-guarded McLaurin for a 35-yard touchdown reception to end the half. In the second half, he led the Scarlet squad on a 14-play, 60-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown. During the drive, he completed all seven of his SEE UWEEKLY.COM FOR THE REST OF THIS STORY.

is this the year? Lebron acknowledges Cavs still need to improve to win By @_JBLOOMFIELD a

A

s if the last four seasons in the NBA did not exist, LeBron James is back in the playoffs with his Cavaliers hosting a first-round playoff series for the sixth time since 2006. The overarching question for this season’s playoff run: What are the expectations for this team? The letter in which James announced he was returning to Cleveland touched on this subject. In

UWEEKLY • April 22, 2015

“I'm Coming Home,” James said: “I’m not promising a championship … We’re not ready right now. Of course I want to win next year, but I’m realistic.” This was before the acquisition of Kevin Love. This was before the Cavs acquired Timofey Mozgov, Iman Shumpert and J.R. Smith. This was before the Cavs finished the regular season with a record of 34-9 dating back to Jan. 15. That mark was the best record in the NBA over that span. So, LeBron, are the Cavs ready yet? April 7, James said, “We’re a championship contender, but we’re not there yet. We have the talent, we’ve had the process so far, but we still have some time left.” The season is over, but the Cavs still have some margin for error considering their first-round

matchup with the Boston Celtics. The Celtics are simply thrilled to be in the playoffs and finished the season with a below-.500 record. While on the rise, the Celtics are at least a year or two away from being a legitimate threat. Frankly, the Chicago Bulls present a tougher potential matchup than the Atlanta Hawks. The Bulls would meet the Cavs in the conference semifinals. So if Cleveland gets past Chicago, it is logical to say a loss to Atlanta in the conference finals would be just as disappointing. A loss to any team other than Chicago or Atlanta is out of the question. If Cleveland advances to the NBA Finals, it will face a battle-tested team from the Western Conference. Cleveland would likely be an underdog in that situation, but will have the advantage of an easier path to the final. A well-rested Cavs team could give any team in the NBA a run for their money. There is nothing wrong with being ahead of schedule.

Crew SC wins home match after 2-game road trip

A

By @ben_ferree a

fter a long road trip, a strange early season schedule and a multitude of suspensions and injuries, Columbus Crew SC finally had a home game on a standard time this Saturday against MLS newcomers Orlando City SC. It was the first official meeting between the two clubs, and also featured just the second time in history a former world player of the year played in Columbus. Kaka may have been the spotlight before the game started, but once things began, he was silenced and kept in check as Crew SC players dominated the stage. It began in the 32nd minute when Federico Higuain (a @FHiguain33) scored his first goal of the season off a pass from Ethan Finlay (a @EthanFinlay13). It was an incredible no look back heel flick that somehow found the net and will surely be up for goal of the week honors. Then, a mere two minutes later, a melee erupted when Rafael Ramos tackled Waylon Francis (a @WaylonFrancis90) recklessly in the leg. Francis was no longer in possession of the ball, and Ramos’s slide tackle was knee-level. It was an easy decision for the referee to give Ramos a red card.

Even though he had been punished by the official, Crew SC players were still irate, getting into a large shoving match with Orlando as Ramos casually strolled by the Crew SC bench on his way out of the stadium. Order was eventually restored, but it is possible both teams could hear from the league this week. Columbus head coach Gregg Berhalter holds no ill will over the play. “The boy’s a good player, he’s a really good player,” Berhalter said. “It was a careless challenge. I’m sure he’d like to have it back right now. But I don’t think he went in to really harm the player, it was just a bad tackle. I had no problem with him walking in front of our bench.” Up a goal and up a man, Crew SC cruised to victory from there, adding two more goals in the second half for a final score of 3-0. It was an impressive performance all around, but the team is still focused on improving. “We are extremely excited, but obviously, there is still a lot of work to be done,” Finlay said. “Fortunately for us, some of the results in MLS went our way [Saturday night] ... we’re just focused on the next task and that’s Philly next weekend.” photo by david heasley/uw

Big Sean blesses sold-out Columbus show By @ALEXANTONETZ a

onned in all-white—until the shirt was ditched, at least—Kanye West-protege Big Sean shook the Lifestyle Communities Pavilion Sunday with about 75 raucous minutes of bangers just hours before announcing his breakup with Ariana Grande. Though the venue was bumping for the duration of the show, the highlight may have been “Guap,” when what appeared to be one of the costumed creatures from the music video danced around on stage. It was a small-but-nice touch for a show in a venue where big-time production value is hard to pull off. “I Don’t F--- With You,” Sean’s biggest hit from this year’s album “Dark Sky Paradise,” was the show’s rambunctious closer before a brief encore. “All Your Fault,” also from “Paradise,” opened. He also ran through his slew of hits, including cuts from the G.O.O.D. Music compilations “Mercy,”

“Clique,” and “Don’t Like,” as well as solo joints “Ass,” “Blessings” and “Marvin & Chardonnay.” Mixtape tracks like “Higher” and “Mula” also featured, as well as some slower selections, like “My Last,” which were welcome breathers between his radio hits.

was a bit of a bummer, but it was still high-energy throughout. A video board about one Big Sean tall and three Big Seans wide displayed video of eyes, foul weather and so on, which were almost certainly packaged by Kanye’s creative agency Donda. And what would a Big Sean show be without his trademark ad libs “oh gawd” and “lil’ bitch”? It would be nothing. There’s been no shortage of criticism of Big Sean; that his albums have been letdowns for someone with a Kanye West cosign. Whether that’s true or not— it isn’t; “Dark Sky Paradise” is great—didn’t matter Sunday. He put on a fantastic show and is one of the few big-time rappers that at least seems genuine when he says he’s thankful to his fans for his success. “Columbus, I feel blessed,” he said.

ways to make the most of music fests & not break the bank

By @ARIANNAURBAN a

M

usic is my one true love. If it were a thing I could marry, I would do it. One of my favorite things about summer is being able to hit up outdoor venues around Columbus, and even adventure elsewhere to see some of my favorite bands. I know that being on a college budget as most of us are, it can be hard to imagine throwing down some serious cash not only for a concert ticket, but gas, food, somewhere to sleep, and, of course, booze. The concert tickets will almost always be the most expensive part of this adventure. So, here is how to make it a little easier: Where should you stay? Hotels can be hella expensive. First of all, if you decide that you want a hotel, I recommend cramming as many people into one room as possible and split the cost. Unless you want to stay at the Bed Bug Inn, you want to stick to hotel chains that are familiar. My go-to is camping. I made a trip to Pennsylvania for a concert last year and camped out for two nights. Total cost: $60.

Pack a cooler and any supplies you will need. Fast food works just as well, but do

you really want to survive on McDonald’s for your entire trip? Pack all the beer and anything that can last in a cooler for a few days, more beer, and water. Take water everywhere, especially if you are going to Bonaroo, Jamboree in the Hills, or any other outdoor all-day event. Also, freezing water bottles rather than buying ice continually helps out a lot.

Figure out whose car gets the best gas mileage and pitch in for gas. Don’t be that

guy that doesn’t take a turn driving or at least put $10 in for gas. Also, take parking into consideration. Split all costs evenly. Volunteer! A friend of mine volunteers every year at Coachella, so guess what she gets to do? Go to Coachella virtually for free every year. If you’re short on cash for a ticket, this is the best option. cross from me at the bar sat Sammy Dodge and Jack Dodge, two of the three brothers that comprise Columbus rock ‘n’ roll band The Up All Nights. I said to them, “It seems like you guys miss the days when rock was dangerous ...” but my question hung unfinished as Sammy Dodge jumped in. “We are those days,” Sammy Dodge said with gusto. Onstage, lead singer and guitarist Sammy Dodge’s quick wit and devil-may-care attitude instantly draw the audience into The Up All Nights’ spectacle of loud guitar, flailing hair and pounding drums. “Our mom always had us involved with dance, and that definitely made an influence on our stage show,” said bassist Jack Dodge. “The crowd’s not going to move unless you move.” Though The Up All Nights are influenced by classic rock and blues rock bands, the way the brothers’ personalities come out on stage is what sets them apart from other groups. “We’re way more into the dream of rock n’ roll as it once was, and will be again,” said Sammy Dodge prophetically. “Hard rock is cool, and we like a lot of hard rock, but I think that rock ‘n’ roll means that you’re trying to break some sort of rule.” The show comes first for The Up All Nights, but after being together for four years, the rock lifestyle has caught up with them. “We have some guys who don’t like us and some venues that don’t like us, but we’re very amicable,” Sammy Dodge said. “We aim to please. We never mean to mess anything up, but we also won’t sacrifice the moment for keeping it clean. That’s not what we do.” The Up All Nights’ next show is at Double Happiness May 1. Also keep an eye out for The Up All Nights at local music festivals like ComFest and Park Street Fest this summer if you want a glimpse of the Dodge brothers’ rock ‘n’ roll with soul.

retty much grew up reading ALL the classics and that list started and ended with US Weekly. Literally. And shockingly, I correctly used “literally” in the previous sentence. It is like honestly seriously like FOR REAL an honor for like the No. 1 magazine in the WORLD to name me “best socialite” at Ohio State. I could not attend the awards ceremony thrown in my honor over the weekend. So like I didn’t want to tweet much because I had just met this guy IN A BAND. Three bands played and his band played first which obviously means they are the best. If you’re not first, you’re WORST. I have a T-shirt that says that. It’s like literally our sorority’s motto. We have pretty much been texting non-stop. I am positive he doesn’t do this often. Probably never meets other girls backstage on tour and tells them how much he misses them and how much he wants them to come see him on tour. I am FOR SURE the only filly in his stable. *All the heart and heart-centric emojis.* If my boyfriend ever cheated on me, I would legit be crushed and devastated. But luckily, when you’re a hot girl, the rules do not apply. That’s just common knowledge. Karma doesn’t affect women who look like me. So I didn’t hear about the “best socialite” honor until just now. I had to delete my Facebook on Saturday so the band guy couldn’t creep me and see my boyfriend pics and then I had to make my Insta and Twitter private because I didn’t want him to see my tweets about my boyfriend and Instas with my boyfriend. Couldn’t delete Insta entirely though because I wasn’t losing all those pics with 500-plus likes. It’s likely why I won this most prestigious award. *Editor's note: Just in case you missed the joke, @OSUSophomore is actually referring UWeekly when she says US Weekly. #vapid

TECH

C

local startup changes the healthcare and tech scene

hrossChx, Inc., created in 2012 by CEO Sean Lane and President Brad Mascho, has recently raised $15 million. That means the local tech venture will not be uprooting from Central Ohio for the greener pastures of Silicon Valley. The money raised, which now sends the company’s accumulated growth north of $20 million, came after the Series B funding round for the company that focuses on what it calls “global patient identification.” The company’s product, “SafeChx,” works like this, as described on its website: “SafeChx instantly verifies a patient’s identity, linking them to their medical record and benefits so no one else can use them. The four components of the SafeChx identity solution come together seamlessly in the SafeChx interface. The SafeChx software works with your EHR system to enable your staff to efficiently register patients and verify identities. This system updates daily, ensuring pa-

tient information is always available and up to date.” In simpler terms, it links a patient’s medical records to a single log-in ID, reducing and then fixing the number of potential errors that can occur when visiting multiple doctors and filling out various forms. Take for instance someone’s social security number. If a single form is filled out incorrectly and a patient’s medical history is tied to an incorrect SS number that could lead to myriad issues. The goal of SafeChx is to verify a patient’s identity and then find and fix these sorts of filing errors. The company currently has 15 million patients in its system and is looking to get up to 50 million by year’s end. There is also talk of another round of funding the company could take part in, but that would be still awhile in the future. According to TechCrunch, “CrossChx says it’s deployed in more than 100 hospitals across eight states, and it has verified more than 2 million pa-

tient visits. With the new funding, it plans to build mobile tools, grow the team from about 35 to 100 and expand nationally.” But while the company is set to expand its brand nationally, that doesn’t mean it’s going to abandon its Central Ohio beginnings. Speaking with the Business Journals, Lane said, “[Co-founder] Brad [Mascho] and I didn’t go into this with any inclination we were going to move the company. That’s an issue with a lot of investors in Silicon Valley. We didn’t really give on that.” That’s not to say that the company won’t expand its offices to Silicon Valley or other parts of the country at some point. But the fact that a tech startup has had so much success coming from Columbus is certainly an exciting prospect for other local entrepreneurs.

netflix rides high with originals

W

ith the successful launches of critically praised series “Daredevil” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” Netflix is riding high and so are its subscription numbers. In a report last Wed., Netflix announced a record number of people signed up for the service, more than 40 million subscribers in America and 20 million internationally. According to CNET, this announcement pushed the company’s shares up to an all-time high, with its numbers up 13 percent to $537.24 in one day last Wed. Overall, the stock has risen a staggering 37 percent in the last year alone. The good news came days after HBO Now launched to much fanfare alongside the fifth season premiere of the uber-popular “Game of Thrones,” but Netflix never saw this new service as competition. Netflix said in a letter to shareholders that the two “are not substitutes for one another given differing content” and that, "We think both will continue to be successful in the marketplace, as illustrated by the fact that HBO has continued to grow globally and domestically as we have rapidly grown over the past five years." Looking ahead, Netflix is eager to focus on more international growth. Over the first fiscal

quarter, the service added 2.6 million international members, which was better than the 2.25 million originally projected. Next quarter, Netflix hopes to add 600,000 more American members and 1.9 internationally. This growth in numbers is good for multiple reasons but none more so than that it shows Netflix is playing the long game with its service. The company is actually losing money this year producing the amount of original content it has been and CFO David Wells acknowledged that this trend should continue. “We’ve said we are committed to running the business at global breakeven and we have ambitious plans for international growth,” Wells said. “We’ll have some bigger launches, and we’ve described them as meaningful and significant investments in back half of this year. So you should expect those losses to trend upward and into ’16, and then improve from there.” Of course, this just means that the company is investing so much in original content now so that it can lure away viewers of traditional TV in order to survive the long term. It’s a very savvy business strategy and one the company hopes will produce bigger net gains in 2016.

nappy casual second-year Kamari Wright is a great dresser with even greater ambitions. Eventually getting a degree in computer science and engineering, Wright hopes to own a business in computer science—for now he exercises his talents by creating innovative phone apps and being a disc jockey in his spare time. He hails from Atlanta and brings a bit of eclectic fashion to these streets. Read on to find out a little bit more about this overachiever’s style!

SHIRT $25 LEVI'S

How would you describe your style? My style is eclectic. It’s more about what I like than what’s considered ‘cool.’ So for me, I’m a fan of plaid shirts and button ups, so I’ll grab one of those and try to find a hat to match. Usually, when it’s not snowing outside, I’ll pick the craziest pair of sneakers I have—I collect sneakers. I always dress myself to how I feel that day. So for example, yesterday I wore a button-up golf t-shirt with golf balls and tees on them. Just something different. The day before I wore a shirt with deer and trees on them. It kind of fits my major but kind of doesn’t at the same time. Do you let your shoes be your standout piece? Yeah. They’re usually colorful and very bright. They are the biggest part of my outfit. I like to be very plain on top, and then let my shoes be different. I focus my outfits on my sneakers. Today, I had to wear boots, but I decided to wear them a little bit different—cause everyone wears boots the same way. I have about 30 pairs here with me, and another 30-40 at home in Atlanta. Where do you find inspiration? I look at certain brands, like Billionaire Boys Club, Supreme, Levi’s for jeans and now I’m getting into higher-end stuff. I also find that I look through magazines and kind of pick and choose what I like, or think would be cool to wear. Another place of inspiration for me is thrift stores, actually. I don’t like to stay in one box!

PANTS $35 LEVI'S

Would you say your style is going through a transition? Yes, I’m starting to get more interested in dressing up. I’ve been wearing more button-ups and watches—I’m actually planning on getting a really nice watch here pretty soon. When I came here, I was doing the whole t-shirt thing, but now it’s starting to move to something different. Now, I think about dressing for my age and for the career field that I’m about to enter. What are fashion no-nos that you see around campus? I hate when people let their pants drag. When they’re covering the back of the shoes, I get frustrated. Another one: I know Uggs are expensive, but those are annoying. Also, there was a girl one time who was wearing a purple shirt, orange tights and black shoes. If you’re going to be wild, make sure it goes together. You know, you try your best to respect people and their personal fashion, but sometimes it’s like—just don’t let your pants drag!

often call up the memory of my first pair of Converse All-Star shoes. I was 12, and after seeing them donned by Daniel Radcliffe (who I was crushing on hard), I begged my parents for months for my own pair. This seemed a fruitless effort; I knew my parents didn’t have that kind of money to throw around. However, one evening my mother came in carrying a Converse shoebox—I’m pretty sure I cried. I wore and adored those suckers till the seams ripped and the color faded to gray. They now reside in the original box in my closet. When I recall these shoes, I always get this question in my head: why are they so popular? My dad loved his pairs of Converse growing up in the 1960s and 1970s. Why has this fad lasted for so many years? It all began in 1917. The Converse Rubber Company designed an athletic shoe. Sales weren’t stellar that first year. But popularity skyrocketed after the company signed a deal with athlete Charles (Chuck) Taylor in likely the first shoe endorsement agreement. Then, in the early 1920s Taylor suggested changes in the design. Those changes were made, which created the modern-day Converse we all know and love. This is unprecedented; to only slightly change your design and branding in 100 years is quite a feat. What’s given the trend of the Converse shoe its strength is probably something not even a computer algorithm could determine. From soldiers in World War II, to athletes on a court, to students at OSU, many have enjoyed the Converse shoe. In a world full of constant evolution, it’s comforting to see one thing that will always remain unchanged.

EFFORTLESS STYLE UPGRADES

W

hen I’m on campus interviewing students, the number one fashion pet peeve I hear about is the classic Ugg boot, legging and oversized sweatshirt trend. It’s an outfit we constantly witness, and it’s an outfit we love to hate. For those who would like to get out of this fashion rut, there are simple upgrades to save your college wardrobe. Firstly, the oversized ragged sweater must go. Instead, stock up on tapered crewneck sweatshirts—they’re more flattering to your body and they’re just as comfortable. Secondly, we all know this crucial legging rule: they are not pants. Wear actual pants instead! Jeggings or treggings are a great replacement. They’re made of stretch material so they’re still cozy, but they won’t creep up into certain crevices. Lastly, and unfortunately, those Uggs were so 2007. I know they’re warm and fuzzy, but a riding boot has more coverage and makes you look like you actually tried to look good. Upgrade your style and upgrade your life!

She’ll be so drawn to you and all your European glory – a positive ending will be inevitable! A pair of shoes with swagger I hope you didn’t think those ragged Converse from high school would do for this date. We women pay close attention to what you’re wearing – we always put our looks together carefully for dates. So if you don’t make an attempt at putting a little thought in, consider the date a flop! Shoes with swagger will catch her attention and make you look like that much more of a man. Lips for smoochin’ Make yourself look kissable! I don’t know about you, but peeling lips aren’t attractive to me. Chap stick is not only smart for this time of year, but the light gloss will make your lips a little more noticeable.

FROM RUBY WITH LOVE

I see your true colors, & they're the color of bullsh*t

Y

ou know sometimes, you just have to learn the hard way. One of my favorite songs has a line that says: “fate is an elegant cold hearted whore, she loves salting my wounds …” I’d say that about covers how I have been feeling. It’s cool. I’m not bitter. I made the mistake of getting involved with someone that I knew I should have stayed far far far far (far far far, you get it,) away from. Not only was this person someone that I work with, huge red flag number one, but he was also caught up on his ex, ginormous red flag number two. That is not typically a shit storm I throw myself into without serious yellow rubber rain attire, but apparently I felt like playing in the rain without so much as a bikini on. Did I say I wasn’t bitter? So, this dude, we’ll call him Will. Will and I got to flirting once upon a time and I’m a little dense when it comes to the whole ‘hey I’m hitting on you thing,’ so someone else brought it to my attention. Finally I called him out on it, turns out, I’m pretty good at flirting … and sexting. Who knew? Things were super awesome for about a month, we hung out, and by hung out, I mean naked, pretending to watch some movie I couldn’t even tell you the title of. No big deal, I was feeling all giddy about the prospect of this potential boyfriend, but then he started to be all weird. Whatever, I’m a grown up, you wanted to sleep with me I wanted to sleep with you, it happens. He then tells me that he still wants to be with his ex, blah blah blah, we’ve heard this one before. I, being the mature person that I am (most days) was like cool you know I wish you the best. Right? Because it’s always that simple. Ha. Just kidding.

He and I continue to do this whole back and forth thing, then he tells me that they’re getting back together. Again I was all cool, good luck. Long story short-ish, they didn’t get back together, and we did that whole hanging out naked thing. My mistake. The point I’m trying to make is the whole time all these things were happening I was honest about having feelings for him, but I was always the bad guy. Nothing I ever did was the right thing. I was wrong for sticking up for myself, and deciding that I wasn’t going to let him use me. I was wrong for telling him how I was feeling, I was wrong for wanting him to decide whether he wanted a thing with me, or if he really wanted to be with her. You know what? F*ck that, and f*ck him, I am not wrong. Apologizing for the way you feel is wrong. You have the right to feel any damn way you please. Not only that but if you feel like you are being disrespected in any way, in any situation, you are allowed to speak up and say so. I finally saw all the things that he said when he was deciding not to be a jerk for what it was, bullshit. Yeah, I can say that he isn’t a terrible person, and I’m an adult (most of the time) and put myself into the situation, but it was a shitty situation. I tried to clear the air with him the other day and let him know that the only relationship we can have is a professional one, and he responded with some lame, “no you’re right I’m a terrible person,” no you’re a manipulative person, and I’m over it. Bye Felicia. Feeling pretty stellar, Ruby
