Moving to university and living with people you don’t know is a big step and can be daunting. That’s why we’ve designed a Welcome programme to make the transition easier. This will give you a chance to meet people and start making new friends.

LIVING AT HOME? There are lots of students who choose to stay at home. The Welcome events are a great way to meet new people. Better still, you could start a Living at Home Society with our support.

TRAVEL You won’t walk more than a few steps without seeing a bus in Bristol and this is just one of the many ways of getting around. Check out our travel information at uwe.ac.uk/visitus.

THE STUDENTS’ UNION IS RUN BY STUDENTS, FOR STUDENTS. We exist to empower you and enhance your experience at UWE Bristol. We are here to embolden you with a range of services and support. We want to give you as many opportunities as possible during your time at university and help you to get the most out of your student experience.

JOIN IN University is a time to experience new things, and here at UWE Bristol, we want to make sure that everyone gets involved. With over 170 societies and sports clubs, you’ll have plenty of options. If you don’t find anything that takes your fancy, why not start a new group with our support.

SPEAK UP The collective student voice is powerful. In order to ensure that it is heard and acted upon, we work in partnership with UWE Bristol to represent your academic interests by empowering and supporting more than 1,000 Student Reps. In addition to Student Reps, students are also represented throughout the UWE Bristol governance structure ensuring that the student voice is a key part of every decision. You can make a difference by becoming a Student Rep for your course, getting involved with our new UWE Voice group or by joining in with one of our many campaigns.

BE MORE There are so many ways that you can engage with us and the local community. Whether you get involved with our Raising and Giving Team (RAG) or join the Green Team and support The Students’ Union’s drive to embed sustainability in everything that we do, you can make a difference. There is also the chance to build your skills by working for us in one of our bars, shops or offices. So, open yourself up to all new opportunities and get involved.

THE A TEAM

Each year, you get to vote in The Leadership Race and decide which current students will get paid to run The Students’ Union.

Here are your Presidents for 2019-20, you can pop in and chat to them anytime in The Students’ Union at Frenchay.

PRECIOUS ONYENEKWU TATAH PRESIDENT Studied: Accounting and Finance and a Master’s in Cyber Security. Precious previously held the position of the Founder and President of the Culture Fusion Society for two consecutive years. She has also been a Pal Leader, Yoga Society President, Creative Director of the Africa Week Dance Team, a Student Rep and a Student Ambassador. “I am here to champion your voice on all matters relating to students’ experience, while encouraging diversity and inclusivity in a real world university.”

My top tip for settling in at university is to make your mental health a priority and to look out for others. It can get tough, learn to survive on a budget. Also, be open to learning different cultures as UWE Bristol has a diverse student body.

JANE OJIAKO VP EDUCATION Studied: Business and Human Resource Management. Jane previously held the part time position of Women’s Officer in 2018/19. “I’m here to represent and listen to your voice and to ensure that your student experience beats your expectations.”

My best advice for settling in at university is to make the most of your first year and stay true to yourself.

UBONG JOSEPH ANTE VP COMMUNITY AND WELFARE Studied: Mechanical Engineering. Ubong has supported a number of welfare campaigns throughout his time at university. “You are all entitled to have a voice and leaders ready to serve. I am the voice which will ensure you have the best student experience.”

My top tips for settling in at UWE Bristol are don’t forget to live while you learn and keep an open mind to new experiences.

JOSH EDJE VP SPORTS AND HEALTH Studied: Aerospace Engineering. Josh has engaged in recreational sports throughout university. “I am here to bridge the gap between you and the University, while empowering you to have a fun, healthy UWE Bristol experience.”

EVAN BOTWOOD VP SOCIETIES AND COMMUNICATION Studied: Philosophy. Evan has been a committee member of three societies (one of every type) and one sports club, a student Rep, a PAL leader, a Student Ambassador and an active member of Student Council. “We have more than 100 varied societies here at UWE Bristol and I am here to support them all. I am also here to deliver on what students care about most.”

My best advice for settling in at university is to find a sports club that you truly love, as it will introduce you to lots of new people.

My top tips for starting university are make the most of it! Getting to know flatmates, trying Give It A Go sessions, and exploring the campus and societies will all make your experience much richer. There is no time like the present. Also, get to know people. Everyone is in the same boat as you. There will be some amazing people you could meet over these few weeks, so go find them!

CITY CAMPUS City Campus is home to UWE Bristol’s creative and cultural subjects, and after just a few minutes on the campus, we guarantee that you’ll be seriously inspired. City Campus is made up of a range of iconic locations including the Watershed, Arnolfini, Spike Island and Bower Ashton, all of which are just a short walk from Bristol city centre.

FRENCHAY CAMPUS

GLENSIDE CAMPUS

GLOUCESTER CAMPUS

With over 3,000 students living here, Frenchay Campus is more like a town. With a 24-hour library, the Centre for Sport, our shops and bar and The Students’ Union main office, it is a lively place. Whether you’re looking to study, relax or meet up with friends, Frenchay Campus has got it all.

Best known for its sense of community and friendly atmosphere, you’ll feel right at home as soon as you get to Glenside. The campus is set in beautiful historic grounds and is home to UWE Bristol’s healthcare students. Glenside Campus is a short ride from Frenchay and the city centre and has its own bar and shop.

Based in the historic Alexandra Warehouse at Gloucester Docks, Gloucester Campus is home to two nursing courses. With plenty of opportunities to get to know other students, you’ll be sure to make new friends. The campus is located on the stunning harbourside and is just a short walk from Gloucester city centre.

YOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO WELCOME EVENTS

LATE NIGHT DO IT RIGHT

Not all heroes wear capes, at UWE Bristol they wear yellow t-shirts. We want our students to have unforgettable (and safe) nights out, so we’ll be on hand at some Welcome events to help you remember them for all the right reasons. We’ll be giving out food and water, charging phones and providing information on how to get home. Check out thestudentsunion.co.uk/latenight.

The first few weeks of university are a chance to meet people and try new things. To help with this, we’ve been working on an exciting range of events and activities to help you settle in. With events happening both day and night, across the campuses and in the city centre, you’ll be sure to find something for you.

With the Welcome calendar packed full of events, buying a wristband could be one of the best investments that you will make. This is an all-access pass and gives you the flexibility to go to any ticketed night-time event, at any venue. If this isn’t enough to tempt you, a wristband will also allow you to queue jump and feel like a VIP!* Still not sure? Well, look no further than our fancy flow chart, which will help you to make your mind up.

Not sure?

Yes!

It’s too expensive.

I don’t know anyone.

It may sound like a lot, but buying a wristband could actually save you money, as some events will be more expensive on the night. You will also have access to exclusive discounts after Welcome.

With our Welcome programme, you will meet new people before you know it! Our HallsLife programme will also help you to build your UWE Bristol community in halls.

I’m not really a big drinker. That’s fine, many of our students choose to enjoy the night-time ticketed events without drinking. We’ve also got loads of alcohol-free activities to enjoy.

I’ll just buy one when I arrive.

You can, but with a limited number of wristbands available, you may find they sell out.

Amazing! We’ll see you at Welcome 2019. Okay I’m sold where do I get my wristband?

Surely they won’t all sell out? With more than 8,000 new students and only 500 wristbands, you could miss out. * some events will be on a first come, first serve basis, subject to capacity.

To get your wristband visit thestudentsunion.co.uk/welcome

Settle in with

University is the start of something very exciting, but it can also be unnerving. HallsLife is here to help you meet new people and become part of the UWE Bristol community. We hold events throughout the year to help you meet your neighbours. From film nights to Bring Your Own Bowl, HallsLife is sure to have you chatting to people in no time. We’ve also set up our own Halls League where you can earn points, and everyone knows points mean prizes. You can get points by taking part in events, volunteering, fundraising or by tagging us on social media #UWEHallsLife. The halls with the most points at the end of the year will receive a budget to host their own end of term party! If all of that sounds good and you want to get more involved in HallsLife, then why don’t you join our committees? We’ll be running our elections at the beginning of October – you can run to be the Chair, Sports Officer, Events Officer or Community and Campaigns Officer for your halls. Find out more about HallsLife online at thestudentsunion.co.uk/Hallslife. Join the official HallsLife Facebook groups, find yours at thestudentsunion.co.uk/hallslifefacebook.

FIVE WAYS YOU CAN GET INVOLVED IN DEMOCRACY AT THE STUDENTS’ UNION In order to represent your academic interests, The Students’ Union is run by students for students and every voice matters. Your VP Education, Jane Ojiako, discusses the ways that you can get involved with democracy at The Students’ Union.

1. Run in The Leadership Race The Leadership Race takes place every March and is an exciting time at The Students’ Union. The race sees students run for the five full-time paid sabbatical roles and a range of part-time voluntary roles. Elected students are responsible for inputting ideas, developing campaigns and leading the direction of The Students’ Union.

2. Take part in the By-Elections Every October, we hold elections for the UWE Bristol representatives to the NUS National Conferences. Alongside these, we also hold by-elections to fill any of the vacant part-time voluntary officer positions. This is your chance to represent students from UWE Bristol, both locally and nationally.

3. Share your ideas Your ideas shape what The Students’ Union does throughout the year and can be submitted any time via our website. Your ideas can and do influence the student experience of thousands of students at UWE Bristol. To submit your idea head to thestudentsunion.co.uk/ideas.

4. Sit on the Student Council Each year, 20 students are elected to sit on the Student Council. The Council meets three times a year to scrutinise ideas, create policy, discuss matters affecting the student experience, and hold the elected Presidents to account. Have your say on who leads The Students’ Union.

If you don’t fancy being one of the five Presidents who are paid for a year to run The Students’ Union, then you should make sure that the team you want is in post. Have your say in the October and March elections. For more information, visit thestudentsunion/representation.

THE MUSIC Bristol has a hugely diverse music scene and is home to some of the most iconic venues in the UK. The O2 Academy, Colston Hall and Motion are all known for hosting major artists and DJ’s. There are also many local venues that provide a whole range of artists.

THE ARTS AND CULTURE

DIVERSE COMMUNITY

THE NATURAL BEAUTY

Known as the home of Banksy, it’s no surprise that Bristol has a thriving street art scene. The streets are full of quirky, thought-provoking art, and you’ll be sure to see new artwork popping up. If this isn’t enough, the city also hosts the largest European street art festival, UpFest, which is back for 2020.

The streets of Bristol are known for their diversity, and with a welcoming and inclusive feel, you’ll feel at home in no time. From the vibrant Afro-Caribbean St. Pauls Carnival to Bristol Pride, this city will have you feeling the community spirit before you know it.

As well as offering the busy metropolitan city life, Bristol is also home to some fantastic outdoor spaces. Ashton Court is just a short walk from our City Campus and let’s not forget the glorious Clifton Downs.

THE FOOD If you like food, you’re in the right place! Known for its wide variety of independent restaurants, bars and cafes, including plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, Bristol is home to an array of award-winning establishments. You’ll be eating your way through the globe in no time, and with a range of eateries offering TOTUM (NUS) student discount, you may even save a few pounds in the process.

Psst, this is Dower House in Stoke Park, less than a five minute walk from the edge of Frenchay Campus!
