President Students’ Union Are you a Roper Voter? My name is Charlie Roper, and I’m standing to be your Students’ Union President. I came to UWE to study, but also to meet loads of new people. I’ve loved my experience at UWE, and I want to make sure that every one of you gets the best experience possible. I want to represent you and your interests to the highest possible standard, by doing the following:

Improve the quality of your education, for the fees you are paying! Flexible timetabling and inspirational classrooms!
Fees have risen to £9000+, and although I do not welcome this, I want to be realistic. I want to make sure the money you are paying for your education, whether it be the old or new fees, should be better invested in you. I do not want to see simple ‘read from the PowerPoint’ lectures anymore, and I want to address the reduction of contact hours on some courses. You need to be inspired in your classrooms and lectures, and feel empowered to learn! You need more! Make sure that you know what you are paying for! Hidden course costs are an issue that affects you. These range from materials for an art course; books for every module; travel

of UWE. Through the union offering a range of opportunities, we are able to ensure graduates leave equipped with the relevant skills, while also allowing them to develop as individuals!
1. I wish to promote UWE as an educational establishment which allows you to develop as an individual, while also shaping the future of your union. After all, future students are the most efficient marketing tool for the university and will allow for the reputation of the university to increase. Students should feel they have the ability to influence the union!

This is your future to shape, so start by shaping your union and therefore university. I would seek to understand the opinions of a variety of students and ensure their views are represented through a greater transparency in communication!
2. I would seek to enhance the student experience and ensure each student leaves with a variety of skills and very importantly, a positive experience
I will make you proud of your SU, whether you are involved in a sport, society, network or even if you are not. You will have your say! My door will always be open. UWESU campaigns and events should be big and varied enough for everyone to enjoy what the Student Union has to offer. Your student experience is very important to me. On one final note, I will personally relish the opportunity to confidently represent you on a local, national and international level.

Last year, I had such a great time running in the elections and getting to meet so many new people (especially the halls residents who insisted I have a large glass of their whisky before I told them my policies, you know who you are) that I’m running again! A big thank you to the 931 students who voted for me last year, with your help we came a close second by only 31 votes! Throughout my time at UWE, I’ve continually tried to represent and fight for students, as a student rep, as a PAL leader, by running in elections and by being involved in campaigns against cuts to funding and courses. Hello, I’m William Quick and for the I really love being a student and don’t past three years I’ve had the pleasure want to graduate this year so please of being a History student at UWE. help keep me at university by giving me your vote.

Naomi x x As fees go up and funding goes down, it’s becoming an increasingly difficult time for students, and that is why we need our SU. It’s the only tool we have to positively affect our ‘student experience’; so I implore you to support your SU by voting in these elections. The main issue I want to campaign on this year is the outrageous threat against the Politics and International Relations department, and I hope to use my campaign to raise awareness of this issue. After fees were trebled last year, applications to the department dropped by around 20-25%, as you’d expect after such an increase in cost. Instead of possibly reducing the size of the department in line with its new student size (the department
is still attracting over 50 students a year) and allowing application figures to stabilise, the administration has made moves to close the department, in line with its policy of ‘restructuring’ UWE around vocational courses. The course runs at a profit, has satisfaction ratings of over 90% and is the only opportunity to study politics that many students have. Our current President and VP for Education have done fantastic work in supporting students resisting this attack and if elected I will continue this work, and fight for all students and courses under threat! I have many other policies but have run out of space, please check out my facebook page or talk to me directly for more information.

Made from you: Representing you: Working for you!
Joshua Plume
My name is Joshua Plume, and I’m submitting my candidacy to be your Vice-President of Education during the next academic year. Over the last two years UWE has provided me with a stellar quality of education that I’m proud to have had the opportunity to partake in. As such, I want to ensure that this quality is maintained and improved across the whole university whilst retaining the qualities that make UWE great.
surrounding individual circumstances. This, paired with a varied circle of friends, makes me conscious of different situations students face regarding background, sexuality and gender identity, as well as disability and ethnicity. One issue that I will address is the late announcement of exam timetables, which has caused international students economic hardship through missing out on cheaper flights home, forcing some to stay in Bristol over summer. Recently there has been talk of closing the Politics and IR department. This is based on management’s business strategy to transition back to a vocational university, which is intended to help the university specialise in
review of UWE’s accommodation strategy and surcharges. Faculties will be asked to account for differing policies regarding free printing and materials across their departments; and the university will be asked to confirm that no course changes will force a student to go on a field trip or placement not originally specified. Ensure key course dates are provided with greater notice. The university currently has targets regarding turnaround of marked exams and coursework, but students are still not given sufficient notice regarding exam dates and (in some cases) hand-in dates. Some universities will have their final exam timetables released by the time you read this, which would give you much more notice for travel.
Improve lecturer awareness and use of BlackBoard. We all know some lecturers are better than others at uploading materials, and I will ensure that student surveys ask quite specifically which modules this applies to so that agreements can be reached.
certain subjects, however they seem to be overlooking the strong humanities departments that exist at UWE. Another issue is that besides Russell Group universities, UWE is the only institution to offer degrees in Politics in the South West; UWE has a socio-economic responsibility to allow students from less privileged backgrounds to study a subject which has a direct impact on them. Currently the subjects that are at risk of being closed are assessed by criteria which the senior management dictate, but this criterion is not made widely available, and lecturers are unaware of how to protect their subject. If elected, I will work to make management reassess their current strategy for university development, and create greater transparency. I will do
this by not only publishing the criteria by which subjects are assessed, but also making the current ranking of subjects available, so at-risk courses can act to rectify any issues. Another issue is the inconsistency in word count policy – this issue stems from limited interaction between lecturers in some departments. If elected, I will work to introduce a page of everybody’s module handbook which is standardised to give this information, as well as other general information for the course. This will include information like the 24 hour window after a deadline to submit an essay, which has not been advertised sufficiently, costing some students a pass grade.

Regarding courses specifically, I state very clearly that I will fight with my full capacity against the closure, ‘strategic adjustment’ or otherwise, of any course at this university which the students want to stay. Having sat for the past two years in various meetings and boards with members of senior management I have become concerned with the growing gap between their vision for the future of the university, and what is in the interest of students of the university. Their drive for innovation needs to come from the latter, and not the former.

As such, I have acquired a lot of experience of campus life during my time here. Diversity is my passion. I recognise the contributions our volunteers, a reinvigorated RAG and networks make to our Community and Welfare and will introduce an awards night celebrating our accomplishments.

Finally my experience of working and studying on two campuses has shown a lack of ‘community spirit.’ I am determined to unite the campuses, to enhance the UWE experience for all.

I also work as a Student Ambassador and represent my fellow course mates as a Student Rep. I am very passionate about equality, LGBT rights and mental health. Being an International student myself, I am also interested in representing the International student body within the Students’ Union. The SU already focuses on a good range of issues and I now want to be part of developing it even further. Here are my main points that I would do for you as the Community&Welfare Officer. Equality: UWE is an amazingly diverse university and as a female International student, I have always felt welcome here. However, I feel like even more attention needs to be paid for all students to feel equal within the SU and the University. As the Community&Welfare Officer I would:

Create training or guidelines. Create buddy programs to help home students to integrate with the International students to make the student body more culturally aware. This would also encourage more Erasmus studies. Review the need for an International officer at the Students’ Union.
Networks: The separation of societies and networks has not been entirely successful. Networks deserve the same recognition as other activities at UWESU. As the Community&Welfare Officer I would: Include networks into the clubs’ and societies’ training. Promote the club nights as a viable fundraising option. Mental Health: UWESU has done incredible job at breaking the silence of mental health discrimination. I want to keep up the good work, but also focus on a few more things. As the Community&Welfare Officer I would: Include mental wellbeing as a part of the Feel Good February events. Make mental health services more visible at the University.

Student activities bring the student community to life. Being involved in seven different societies in my three years at UWE has helped me to integrate into such a large and diverse community as well as personally develop my communication, problem solving and leadership skills. If elected I aim to work on communication between UWESU and the student body across all the UWE campuses to see more student engagement with activities. In my two years of leading society committees I feel we have benefited most from meetings with SU staff that are specifically focussed on the individual requirements of our society. I want to offer societies more opportunities to hold discussions and development meetings with the executive so that I may provide services specific to each individual society. Ensuring that new societies in particular receive the support they need is important. Having set up a new society from scratch this year I am aware of the challenges and want to offer the same level of support to all
UWESU has some great societies. It’s fantastic that students volunteer their time to be part of societies alongside other commitments. However in comparison to other universities, the number and variety of societies available is somewhat limited. I would like to encourage and support the initiation of societies to get more students involved and enhancing their student experience. I also believe that students and societies should be recognised for their achievements. In the tough graduate job market, a degree is not enough. Therefore, recognition of achievements could open more doors for UWE students. A major complaint is that students don’t know what the SU offers and what the elected presidents actually do. Vice President Societies & Communication Take on an engaging, fun and enthusiastic VP. Take On Ste!
Stephen Treacy
Oh hey there! I’m Stephen/Ste/Stacey/Tracey (Circle appropriate) and I’m delighted to be running for VP Societies & Communications this year! I’ve been on the committee for UWE Bar School for two years, including a current year as President, which
means I’ve had a lot of experience in how to manage and delegate a committee and I’ve learned about values that would be ideal for a Vice President. As part of a highly active and populous society, I’ve dealt with the stresses and issues faced with such a role. I’m very passionate about sharing what I’ve learned to develop the Union’s societies into the great social spaces that they should be. I am also proud to be one of your NUS Delegates for this years conference. If I’m fortunate enough to be elected, I shall: (It sounds obvious...but) Communicate! Make sure societies know - in advanced - where to find me at all times! Tell socieites my goals and ambitions for the year and get feedback. Be transparent with my roles and allow societies to shape their experience

I shall collaborate more with independent companies, venues and bars that are more concerned with the student experience. Work to bridge campuses and further inclusion of students, regardless of where they study! Recognise that societies are run by volunteers and reward such wonderful dedication! Push for society space in the new building that isn’t hindered by bar opening hours and trade. Also work to create venues in other areas, such as the city centre, to reduce long commutes for members. Interact with societies! I can’t magic

Wessex Red bus services may be alright for 9-5 students, but for those studying Health and Social care courses on placement; they are completely inadequate. I will do whatever I can to improve this. I would like Glenside to work more closely with the other satellite campuses, to stand united in representing non-Frenchay students and working together to provide an acceptable student experience for the smaller campuses. I also plan to implement improvements at Glenside Student Centre to attract more students, both at lunchtime and in the evening,
such as a greater variety of deals on food and drinks. With sports societies I want to increase the number of intercampus sports events at Glenside.

Oliver wants more... for you. The experience of being a student on Glenside is very important to me. Sadly it is not important to the Student’s Union executive committee, who seem to think Frenchay is the only campus. While Frenchay Students will soon have a £4.5 million new Student Centre, Glenside’s Student Centre is crippled by severely reduced opening hours. Glenside is overlooked for events, and events that we do put on are poorly publicised.

viding improved social life and better support! I want you to feel that you have a voice! We are secluded at Hartpury from other campuses and I believe that you need more. I will ensure that our campus is not forgotten and UWE Bristol engages you. I want you to feel fairly represented! There should be an improved social life at Hartpury, by organizing transport to events in Bristol. Improved student communication around campus! I want to improve and establish clear communications throughout Hartpury. I don’t want you to miss out on any opportunity available whilst studying here. I will encourage social activities and events, making sure that you are all happy with what is being provided.
Following this, I will ensure that suitable and direct communication channels are open for your access so that you can receive the best possible answers to questions you may have. Better and affordable transport to and from campus. A car-parking pass at Hartpury costs £50 and recently there has been a reduction in spaces available, with an increase in yellow lines. I believe, although promoting sustainability, we should not be reducing access to campus. Parking should be affordable and plenty of transport links should be available. Improved services on campus! The careers service at Hartpury only have links in specific areas such as farming, but very little in areas such as science, busi-
ness and finance. I believe that UWE should improve these services to give you the best possible chance at getting employment after graduating. Our support from the Library needs to be improved. I want to be able to make it clear how you at Hartpury are able to get books from other campuses. You have access to thousands of books, but many do not know where to start. Improved library services from wider campuses are key for you to study and achieve higher whilst here, and I will make sure those services are there for your easy access.

views of current students are expressed clearly. I have previously been a student representative and so hope I can use the skills gained from this to help communicating with UWE staff.
UWE has great services, however most based in Bristol, I want to further improve the availability of these to Hartpury students, and raise awareness of the services Bristol has to offer.
I know that many HE students at Hartpury struggle with transport to and from Gloucester and campus as the buses which run are usually for FE students. I want to try and improve the services available for this, especially at weekends.
I am keen to listen to Student views, and want to be easily contactable for everyone, so that I can try and help in anyway I can - from just questions on where to get journals to setting up a society at Hartpury.
If I am elected for this role, I want to improve Hartpurys University experience, by encouraging more societies to form, and try and get some of the great UWE Bristol socities to come here more or for us to get better transport to any events held in Bristol. Good communication is needed to ensure that we, as students, get a great experience whilst at university this can be done by increasing the amount of socials held, and ensuring
I want you to feel supported and represented in the issues that matter to you as a student at UWE.
Getting information out about student events is currently done mainly by social networking sites, I want to see whether we can link with UWE Hub Radio and get a Hartpury Broadcast out, as well as furthering the Student Mag.
Campus Officer St Matthias Spreading jam on the toast of St Matt’s. Hello! I’m Josie and I am a second year English student, and hi I’m Sam and I am a second year Drama student. We want to run for St Matt’s Campus Officer because we both spend all our time here and really think we could play a positive role in improving life on campus. If you made us campus officers we would:
Josie Alford & Samantha Benson
Work with the university to improve and increase the recycling facilities across campus
Increase Student involvement in the running of the campus by installing a campus committee with students from all facets of St Matt’s life, improving and expanding our social networking to reach more people and continuing to improve the campus newsletter. Improve events run on St Matt’s including more daytime events and having a volunteer photographer at each event to promote and publicise St Matt’s. Continue the popular St Matt’s fun day and summer ball and help towards its continuation in the coming years. If you vote for us we promise to listen to what you have to say and to work as hard as we can alongside you to make St Matt’s all that it can be.
