Coming to university is a daunting but exciting experience. Aside from your degree, it’s that extra-curricular activity that is becoming more and more important, and this is where UWE Students’ Union is here to help! This guide will show you all the different ways you can get involved in university life from the first few weeks at UWE and beyond. We are here to represent you on a range of issues, and we want to give you opportunities to develop extra skills and talents on top of your degree. We offer a huge variety of societies, sports and networks, all of which give you the chance to get involved in something fun and different. You are part of an ever-growing student community that we are proud to work for and represent. We work hard to promote the diversity of this community by being inclusive for all. We look forward to providing more for you this coming year, through the development and construction of our brand new £9.2 million Students’ Union building. Our job as elected officers is to be here for you. No matter what you study or what campus you are on, the Students’ Union represents you. If you left university with just a piece of paper, we would not be doing you justice. We wish you the best possible experience for the years ahead and look forward to seeing many of your faces throughout your time here!

Sports & Health “Getting involved with a Sports Club whilst at university is the best decision you can make” Chris White, VP Sports & Health
From my personal experience, getting involved with a Sports Club whilst at university is the best decision you can make. Whether you have been involved in sports all your life or wish to try one of our 38 sports for the very first time, we cater for all. Our sports accommodate all athletes, whether you are just trying to exercise for a few hours a week, or you are looking to represent UWE in the British Universities and College Sports (BUCS) league. Sport Clubs at UWE will not only give you a great opportunity to blow off steam whilst at university but will significantly increase the number of friends you make and the different types of people you will meet. This year my role incorporates a focus on health, so we will keep you informed on a range of health issues whether it be the importance of regular exercise or providing recipes for healthy and affordable meals. The Students’ Union also runs a successful Sports Night to help you celebrate your inevitable sporting successes. We are dedicated to providing you with great opportunities at UWE, so take the first step, give it a go and enjoy every experience!

Societies “Doing something you love whilst developing personal skills and experiences Hannah Khan, VP Societies & Communication
I am here to represent the interests of all of the societies that students are currently running and participating in. That means supporting the extra- curricular activities that students want to do and guiding students who want to set up a new society to explore their own interests, whatever they may be! Your involvement in a society will enable you not only to meet new friends doing something you love, but to develop personal skills and experiences that will make you stand out to future employers. Both of these things are invaluable to your university experience. So whether you are pursuing a passion or giving something a go for the first time, make sure you check out at least one of the many societies we have to offer and get involved! Remember I am here all year to support your interests and ideas, so make sure you get in touch with me.

Community & Networks “Empowering students, campaigning for change”
/VPCommunityandWelfare twitter.com/VPCommWelfare VPCommWelfare@uwe.ac.uk
Tom Renhard, VP Community & Welfare
I’ll be working with Rachael, our Community and Welfare Officer, to support the diverse array of communities we have here at the university. We will do this through lobbying and campaigning for change, as well as facilitating a variety of different activities and opportunities that anyone can get involved in. Some of the campaigns we have been involved in have included Mental Health Awareness, Sexual Health and empowering students with greater knowledge on their rights and responsibilities as tenants. Your experience at university is important to us as it can be a journey of self-discovery for many, and we want to be a part of that with you.
As a Students’ Union, we embrace our diverse student membership, which is why we have made it one of our central goals to ensure that you get the most out of your time at university. So whether you are getting involved with one of our Student Networks, the Halls Rep system or through one of the campus officers, the Students’ Union is here to get your voice heard.
We are extremely proud of our diverse communities here and can’t wait to meet you! Rachael Shine, Community & Welfare Officer
Halls Reps For students choosing to live in halls of residence we facilitate Halls Reps to ensure you give feedback on your living experiences. If you are interesting in being a Halls Rep for the next academic year, watch out for us in your accommodation talks or contact us at 13

Embracing your Culture Our student Networks give you an opportunity to meet other like-minded people who share similar identities and beliefs through fun and inclusive social events. You may be interested in exploring something new through joining a Network, or be keen to seek out similar people, but whatever your motivations you can always get involved. 14
Volunteering
RAG
Volunteering at UWESU is friendly, fun, active and sometimes messy!
Raise and Give (RAG) is UWESU’s fundraising arm- last year students just like you managed to raise an astounding £17,000 through various events and initiatives.
Whether you want to pick up new skills, travel the world, meet new people, discover Bristol, enhance your employability or just have fun, UWESU volunteering is bound to have something for you. From local Action Days taking you into community projects for a few hours, to year-long projects which will help you to develop skills in time management, events experience and promotions- whether you have minutes or months, you can volunteer! 15
We love helping students to raise money for a cause they believe in. We can help you plan events, contact the right people, run fundraising stalls on campus and liaise with charities to raise money for great causes- we’ll even lend you the fundraising buckets!

Student Reps “The vital link between students, the University and the Students’ Union” Megan Edmunds, VP Education
Student Reps sit at every level throughout the university and Students’ Union; they are the vital link between students, the university and the Students’ Union. They actively seek the views and opinions of students on their course, making sure you have the best student experience possible. Student Reps create small changes which make a big difference on their course; they also get involved in the big changes and decisions about the university and Students’ Union. Anyone can put themselves forward to be a Student Rep! Student Reps are democratically elected in the first few weeks of term to represent students on their course. So look out for UWE Staff asking for people to nominate themselves! Don’t worry if you haven’t done anything like this before… the Students’ Union provides all the support and guidance you will need! We’re here to ensure that your feedback can create real change. We support Student Reps in their role and work to enhance your educational experiences while you are a student. If you want to give feedback, make sure you contact either one of us or your Student Rep.

USE YOUR VOTE Have Your Say Every year we ask you to vote for the students that you think should be elected as our full-time Presidents and part-time officers. These elected students then work on the issues that are affecting you, responding to your feedback and bringing about positive changes at UWE. You can also nominate yourself for election! It’s a fun experience and a great opportunity to develop your leadership and communication skills. The main SU elections will take place in March. There are lots of other opportunities for you to have your say throughout the year, such as becoming a Student Rep (see page 16), joining a committee, attending the SU’s Annual General Meeting or taking part in student feedback surveys.
Want to Get Involved? We currently have five volunteer positions available that we will be holding elections for in October. These elections are for the Campus Officers at Bower Ashton & Gloucester, Sports & Health Officer, Societies & Communications Officer & Chair of Meetings.
