I have been newly elected into office by the students of UWE to ensure your student voice is heard loud and clear! Gail Wilson SRC Vice President Hi I’m Gail your Student Representative Council (SRC) Vice President for 2010/11. This is my 2nd year as a president after being reelected but before that I studied for 5 years at Hartpury College as an undergrad and postgrad student. My role alongside the other 3 presidents is to represent and support you as students here at UWE, and my focus is on academic issues, from assessment feedback to teaching quality. UWE is a great place to study and Bristol is a great place to live so get stuck in and enjoy it!
Nadia Harding Sports President Hey I’m Nads (AKA GO Nads), re-elected Sports President for 2010-2011. I am here to encourage the development of UWE Sport, and to increase participation in recreational activity for ALL students. I coordinate the Varsity Series where we play against our rivals Bristol University. I also coordinate, the monthly Sports Night, Sports Awards, Free Sport For Freshers’ Week and chair the Sports Council. This year I will also be part of a Relocation Board for our St Matts Campus. SU DEMOCRACY A core principle of UWESU is that it is run by students for students. This is not only achieved by the election of four students as Presidents of UWESU, but by various other means that put UWE students and their views at the heart of the Union. UWESU hold regular Council Meetings; these Councils are Sports, Activities and Student Representatives. To get involved contact any of the elected Presidents or just pop into your SU campus office.
Elections
There are many opportunities for you to get involved and influence the direction of your Union. You could stand for election and become a President. The main elections take place in March when you will have the joy of seeing hundreds of campaign posters plastered to every pin board, bus stop and window! You also have the opportunity to choose to vote for various part time and full time postions. Look out for further information in February.
Annual General Meeting
In November UWESU’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) is held. This is the highest-level policy and decision making forum, where all students can come and vote on what the Union does and what it stands for.
STUDENT REPS
WHAT?
Student Reps are your link to feeding back on your student experience to the University. Every course at every level should have at least one Student Rep. If you have an issue specifically about your course or the University in general you can take it to your Student Rep and they will be able to help. They are also the ones the University asks when they want student opinion so it’s important to tell them what you think. If you don’t know who your rep is, contact us at the email address below.
WHY?
Any student can put themselves forward to be a Student Rep; here are some reasons why you should: • Enhance your CV • Be a member of Students’ Union meetings, giving you a direct say on how the Union is run • Work on national student campaigns • Speak out, make changes and leave your mark • Meet lots of different people and make new friends • Sit on top University meetings • Attend the Annual Student Rep Awards • Receive a Student Rep Certificate • Attendance allowance of £6.58 per hour for time spent in meetings • Organise events and write articles for the Western Eye • You only have to attend 2 to 3 meetings a term as a minimum commitment so it’s easy to balance them with your studies and other commitments!

Reps for each course and level will be elected in your faculty in the first few weeks of term. If you don’t know who is arranging this, ask a module or programme leader, or contact us at the email address below. Once you have become a Student Rep you will receive training and support from the Students’ Union and will be able to get involved with lots of different aspects of the Union. So get in touch!

SPORT
UWESU offers a diverse range of sports, which we would urge you to get involved with. If you can’t find what you’re looking for then we will support you in establishing the club. Every single sports club is run for students by students. All our students are democratically elected to be on a committee – one day it could be you! Each club has a stall at the Freshers’ Fair, so you can find out all about them there. Make the most of UWESU and your time at University by enjoying what’s on offer! UWESU Sport provides you with free and subsidised training, trips, clothing, socials, courses etc … so there’s no excuse not to get involved!
BUCS
British Universities and College Sport (BUCS) is the governing body of University and College sport and you have the potential to represent the University in national competition. This year there will be 37 teams from Badminton to Water Polo, participating in league and knockout competition. Weekend tournaments provide opportunities for other sports from Athletics to Windsurf.

Activities at UWESU include societies, student media, entertainments and volunteering. Getting involved in these activities is a great way to meet people with similar interests and are a perfect way to learn new skills. Employers today are looking for more than just a degree, so getting involved in Union activities is a great way to boost your job prospects. UWESU offers a diverse range of societies providing something for everyone including many cultural, music, interest, religious, political and performance societies. All of the societites listed opposite will be at Frenchay’s Freshers’ Fair so come and see what they get up to. If none of the societies on offer take your fancy it is very easy to set up your own, just visit the SU website.
Volunteering
Raise and Give (RAG)
Raise and Give is your one-stop shop for fun, frolics and fundraising, all in the name of charity. Last year RAG raised over £14,000 which included the first ever running of Jailbreak, which saw over 60 teams try and get as far as possible away from UWE without spending any money - the winners got to New York! In February they host the awe-inspiring RAG Week with events to include Cabaret, Speed Dating, Comedy Nights and the Bristol Mega Raid where we join with RAGs from across the country to descend on Bristol to raise money for local charities. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved throughout the year so if you think you’d like to get involved in something fun for a good cause look no further than RAG. If you’d rather leave the organisation to someone else, then just have a great time knowing that you’re helping local and national charities.
Get involved with volunteering while you’re a student at UWE and stand out from the crowd. Whether you want to learn a new skill or share an existing one, meet new people or enhance your employability... there is something just for you. UWESU volunteering specialises in offering you the opportunity to set up your own projects, campaigns and events to benefit the local community. As long as it is led by you we will help you along the way, and even give you the opportunity to apply for up to £100 to kick-start your idea. We also run one-off volunteering days in the local community including the Big Beach Clean and other conservation projects. Whatever you’re interested in, your Volunteer Support Officer Helen Seacombe can help you find a volunteering project that is right for you.

Whether you live in private accommodation, at home or are studying on another campus you are welcome to join any of the events, activities or performances over Welcome Weekend. Monday 13th to Friday 17th September We look forward to welcoming students from all over the globe to the Orientation sessions. These five days of activities and events will give you important information about UWE and the Bristol community and are a great opportunity to meet other new students and make friends. A quiz night, barn dance and dinner at a venue of your choice are just some of the welcome events on offer to all students during the Orientation week
Saturday 18th September In between your university tours and meeting the staff and academics from your Department you will be welcomed in style by the Vice-Chancellor of the University and your UWESU Presidents. Entertainment will also be provided by the brilliant UniSmart team who offer advice on university life in their own unique style - a real hit with Freshers! From 10:00 listen out for the samba band leading the way from the Student Village to the Welcome talks and UniSmart performances in the UWE Exhibition and Conference Centre. Welcome & UniSmart performance times: 10:30 | 13:00 | 15:30 Each session will last approximately one hour. There will be live music, entertainment, food and the last opportunity to try out free sport for all, so it is not to be missed!
Campus Fairs
Bower Ashton, a combined Glenside and St Matt’s and a Hartpury fair are all taking place as well as the large Frenchay Fair. These mini-fairs on each campus give you an introduction to sports and societies as well as campus based activities, local and more specialist course focused stalls. These fairs are also a great way to get to know your campus and be introduced to loads of people who know exactly what being at uni is all about.

Well, it’s a mix of all things exciting. It’s the time your Students’ Union spends letting you know what’s out there. Freshers’ Week is actually a tad longer than just the standard seven days and it has some amazing entertainment, activities and opportunities. Not only will we be showing you how to have a good time (like you don’t know!) but also keeping you up to speed with what we can offer you throughout the year. The JobShop is based at Frenchay, alongside the Print & Ticket Shop and the Advice Centre. It can also be accessed from the campus offices. It advertises jobs on campus and around the Bristol area - about 4000 a year in total. There are jobs on campus such as shop and bar staff, whilst those jobs outside the University span a vast range of different opportunities such as office work, care work, retail, manual, call centres and lots more. Welcome! It’s a huge honour to be able to write to you as the new President of the National Union of Students. As the representative voice for students across the UK, NUS has a proud history of standing up for the rights of students, and fighting to ensure you can gain access to a world-class education system. NUS has played a critical role defending your rights and winning campaigns to make student life better. In the last two years we have clawed back millions of pounds for students to fight for interestfree student overdrafts, won a national tenancy deposit scheme to make sure you get your money back and conducted ground breaking research into the student experience to ensure your academic and welfare issues are prioritised within your university or college. The year ahead promises to be both exciting and challenging. NUS will be leading the fight to oppose any increase in tuition fees, whilst fighting for a fairer alternative altogether. NUS will be working with SUs to support them in their efforts, and will also be holding a National Demonstration later this year to show our opposition. Watch this space! But we won’t just be fighting on fees. The UWESU Advice Centre offers independent and confidential advice, support and representation on issues including academic, accommodation, employment, funding and more. Some helpful tips from UWESU’s Advice Centre / Things to do before you get here:
1. Sort out your paperwork - birth certificate, medical
card, LA award letter, UWE acceptance letter and National Insurance No.
2.
Make an appointment with your doctor to get vaccinated against Meningitis C. Everyone who hasn’t been vaccinated needs to do this, regardless of age and it will be easier to do through your own doctor.
3.
Get a medical kit - all the student essentials paracetamol, glucose tablets for energy, vitamin C cold treatment to ward off the usual bout of ‘Freshers’ Flu’.
Money
Managing your money at University can be difficult. Living and studying can be a very expensive experience. Be prepared to have a blow out during Freshers! If possible try and save some money during the summer, as you may be spending quite a bit during the first few weeks with the possibility of moving into new accommodation, buying books, partying etc.

Choosing the right student-friendly bank account is a big decision, so shop around for the best deals and free goodies.
5.
Perhaps the best advice is to have a think about budgeting and work out what your expenses will be.
Stock up on food for a week or two - to make sure you don’t spend valuable settling-in time wandering the aisles of Tesco! Grab a cookbook and basic cookery equipment whatever is provided in your house / flat is never enough.

Read your accommodation contract before you sign it! If in doubt contact the Students’ Union Advice Centre on 0117 32 82676.

Fill out the inventory for your accommodation accurately - if you tell the landlord it’s broken before you move in, they won’t be able to charge you when you leave. The main SU Advice Centre office is located on the 2F patio, next to the JobShop, at Frenchay and is staffed by two experienced advisers. We also have a third experienced adviser based at Glenside on a Monday and Wednesday, and at Bower on a Tuesday, during term time.
CAMPUSES FRENCHAY Frenchay Campus is the place where most students are based and thus where most of the activity happens. So during Freshers’ Week this is where all the major events take place; from the big Welcome Party, to the celebrated Freshers’ Fair. Frenchay is home to most of UWESU’s services and in the UWESU building (F Block) you can find the Presidents, the Advice Centre, the JobShop, the Media Centre (home to the student newspaper, Western Eye, and the Hub radio station) and the Sports and Activities Centre (which caters for all sports and societies). If you feel like a drink or something to eat then UWESU offers two bars, Escape and Red Bar, and if you need to grab a snack or pick up a newspaper then there is the Union shop. If entertainment or relaxation is needed the UWESU bars are open in the evening so join in the quiz nights, watch live football, play pool, see live bands or party the night away at the weekly events. The University has its bars, coffee shops, a refectory, 24 hour library, reception and IT labs.

You will find the Glenside Student Centre Bar the friendliest bar around, where all the action takes place. This is a student run bar with regular events ranging from quizzes, comedy nights, live bands and everything in between. Gside has Wi-fi access, 4 PC’s for student use only, pool tables, plasma screens and a great garden. The bar is renowned for its great food so come and try one of our specials for breakfast or lunch, cheaper than Traders! With no on site cash machine, our bar offers cashback. We also have a shop in the Centre to purchase that sweet fix you might need, stationery items or clothing. The UWESU Campus Office at Glenside is here for your personal, academic and welfare needs. Whether you have a question about accommodation, uniforms or the nearest bus route to placement, the staff there are always happy to help out in any way they can. Glenside is well known for its sense of community and friendship, with an active student Campus Committee, aka Glenside Angels, who play a vital part in putting on an unforgettable Welcome Weekend and Freshers’. There are plenty of ways to become involved and get more out of your time at UWE than just a degree. Glenside students tend to work hard, but play even harder.

ST MATT’S
Small and perfect, St Matt’s is a beautiful old campus with a traditional English sunken lawn surrounded by fantastic 19th Century buildings. Close to the city, Frenchay and Glenside, St Matt’s is a hub of activity with a bar, shop, UWESU office and a number of St Matt’s based sports clubs and societies. Small enough for people to get to know each other, St Matt’s supports a lively social scene. The bar hosts regular events including live music, quiz and open mic nights and has the reputation of being the most fun UWESU bar across the campuses! If you just want to chill between lectures, check out our plush sofas, big screen, baked potatoes, toasties, and the best coffee anywhere in UWE. Come and find the UWESU office and get involved in the Campus Committee or become a Student Rep. We also offer an independent advice service, so whatever your question or problem, if we don’t know the answer we can find someone who does. Our shop sells fresh sandwiches daily. Bower Ashton is the smallest of UWE’s campuses, so if it’s an intimate friendly atmosphere you’re after you won’t find it better anywhere else. It is home to the School of Creative Arts and is an eclectic and colourful community of more than 1,600 students and a close network of staff. It is situated on the edge of the beautiful parkland of the Ashton Court Estate and is close to Bristol’s city centre. The Students’ Union at Bower Ashton provides a café/bar, a shop where you’ll find everything you could need on campus, as well as access to all other union services through the SU office. We offer an independent advice service, a Job Shop and access to all sports clubs and societies, along with a diverse range of entertainment, so opportunities to get involved are broad. Come and join us in FoCA bAR and experience the chilled out vibe of Bower while sampling our freshly ground coffee or something off the locally sourced wholesome menu.
