Sport Science Support School staff provide much of the sports science support for our teams and individual performers in the areas of coaching, fitness testing and monitoring, performance analysis, sports psychology and nutrition. This sports science support is carried out in BASES accredited laboratories. Individual staff are also BASES accredited, endorsing the fact that the university has high quality staff teaching and undertaking applied research in first class facilities. These physical and human resources allow staff, masters degree students and research students to be regularly involved in sports science projects with National Governing Bodies (NGB’s), clubs and other academic institutions. Staff also serve on BASES committees ensuring contemporary awareness of changes in BASES policy and good practice. Staff from the Centre for Performance Analysis support the preparation of National squads in rugby, soccer, hockey, lacrosse, netball and squash. Over the past five years the staff of the Centre have attended numerous European, World and Olympic events and established an international reputation for the services they provide. Our students have benefited from this work by having access to these staff, and to one of the best video archives in the world as a teaching/research resource base. The Performance Analysis Teaching Laboratory has 21 computer work stations with state of the art generic analysis software systems.
“A significant number of staff are actively involved with our elite teams and squads.”
Sports Development & Coaching Sport Wales (Sports Council for Wales) is based in Cardiff and very positive links have been developed between the School and the Council. Sports Coach UK, is a very influential body in British sport and Cardiff Met has had a high level of involvement since its inception. National Governing body awards and Sports Coach UK Workshops are run at the university in partnership with Cardiff Council Sports Development Team and Sport Cardiff. These recognised qualifications enhance students’ potential to gain part time and full time employment in the industry by engaging in applied sports work in the community.
Cardiff School of Sport Ethos The major aim of the Cardiff School of Sport is to create an environment that fosters the development of excellence: academic excellence, sporting excellence and professional excellence. Academic and professional excellence are determined primarily by course management and programme delivery, whilst sporting excellence is mainly achieved via staff and student involvement in extra-curricular activity.
Cardiff Met has always had a very good reputation for sporting excellence, but over the past five years the sporting profile has risen substantially across a broader range of sports. The major benefit to the students and staff is that they get direct experience of high quality competitive sport on their own campus. The sporting profile extends beyond BUCS, with many of our teams competing in National League and cup competitions. Academies have been established for gymnastics, swimming, soccer, netball, basketball, rugby, athletics and squash, which directly involve our students in delivering sports development programmes involving over 1000 children from all over the city. A significant number of staff are actively involved with our elite teams and squads and a record of our recent successes in sport is provided in the supporting documentation. Overall, Cardiff Met has a comprehensive offering in sport-related activity from HND programmes to PhD projects and from the “Playground to the Podium”.
