research at UWIC Using honey to combat MRSA An investigation into the use of manuka honey to combat MRSA is being led Professor Rose Cooper at the Cardiff School of Health Sciences, and is now in its second year. Professor Cooper has been studying the mode of action of manuka honey on antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria isolated from infected and chronic wounds since 1997. Honey is an ancient remedy that has recently been re-introduced into modern medicine for treating wounds. Despite the long history of the extensive medicinal use of honey, no resistance to its antibacterial action has ever been reported. In contrast, resistance to antibiotics was reported almost as soon as they were in common use. CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

Welcome

Welcome… Welcome to the first edition of Horizons, the newsletter for UWIC supporters. You are receiving this because you are part of a growing community of individuals that are making a difference to ensure that future generations can share in all that UWIC stands for.

The UWIC Foundation is committed to reducing the environmental impact of our activities. If you would prefer to receive this Newsletter by email, do let us know.

There may be many reasons that you have decided to give something back. For many, like me, it is because of the friendships we forged, the education we received, potential we realised when we studied here.

Horizons Newsletter yn Gymraeg: www.uwic.ac.uk/horizons

If you would like to get in touch with the UWIC Foundation you can email us at: uwicfoundation@uwic.ac.uk or call on 029 2020 1590. Alternatively, write to us at: UWIC Foundation, Cyncoed Campus, Cyncoed Road, Cardiff, CF23 6BN

Giving has never been more important. At a time when UWIC’s reputation is growing worldwide, as we expand and provide more opportunities, funding for education is under pressure like never before. We simply cannot rely on government funding for all that we must do. Today, no UK university can expect that kind of support. Moreover, as student fees rise, many of the talented young people whom we seek to recruit as students, will find it ever more difficult to come to university. We are so grateful to all our alumni, friends, staff and the organisations that support us. It is only through this support that we can continue our tradition of opportunity, achievement and innovation.

Recent News The UWIC Annual Fund The UWIC Annual Fund raises money throughout the year to support scholarships, research, new resources and the student experience. This academic year we have received over £7,000 so far, which will be distributed to various projects across the University toward the end of the year – We look forward to updating you soon! Student callers having a well earned break! (from L to R: Mike, Chrystal, Riyadh, Kieron, Lucy, Lindsey and Giorgia).

Cardiff’s Calling UWIC is celebrating the success of its first ever telephone fundraising campaign to raise money for the new UWIC Annual Fund. Over 4 weeks in October and November 2010, current students called over 1,000 UWIC alumni to re-connect and ask for their support. Over £30,000 was pledged over 5 years! This is a marvellous testament to the generosity of our alumni and this response gives us great confidence as we go forward. The callers have enjoyed learning about the history of the University from alumni and the campaign has given them the opportunity to talk with professionals already working in their chosen field of study. Many have received careers advice, tips and general life lessons from former students. They also got to tell our former students what it is like to be a student at the UWIC today. It has been a highly beneficial and enjoyable experience for both parties.

Making the most of the Match The Matched Funding Scheme being run by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) runs out in July 2011. They are still giving us and extra 50p for every £1 raised through donations so there has never been a better time to start giving. With Gift Aid, it means for every £100 donated, we actually receive £190.50.

Supporting the next generation of talent

Several of the recent Fairwood Scholars, all studying at the Cardiff School of Management

Celebrating the Fairwood Scholars Twenty five students from UWIC’s Cardiff School of Management have been selected to receive £1,000 per year for the duration of their three-year course following a significant donation from the Fairwood Trust. The Fairwood Trust’s main aim is to support individuals in South East Wales with talent, potential and ambition to develop, which in turn will provide benefits to their wider community. Recently, the successful students along with their family and friends met with the Trustees of the Fairwood Trust to celebrate their achievement. David Prichard, Dean of the Cardiff School of Management said: “As a university we are committed to the values underpinning Widening Access. So, it is a dream come true for us to be able to offer sizable bursaries to 25 enthusiastic students from those communities in South Wales currently facing a particularly tough time. We owe a huge vote of thanks to the business people behind the Fairwood Trust for making this possible.”

Lots of local companies are also supporting the next generation of graduates through scholarships. The Willmott Dixon MSc Management Scholarship is in its second year with 2 students benefiting from £1,500 each. A new scholarship in hospitality has also been made possible thanks to SA Brains. The first recipient is first-year student Lauren Roberts who is currently studying towards a BA (Hons) Hospitality Management. The School of Sport is also delighted that Spire Healthcare will be supporting several talented athletes with a Sports Scholarship this year. If you think your Company or Organisation would like to support a scholarship at UWIC or would like to provide a work placement opportunity, please contact Andrew Walker, Director of Development for a discussion on 029 2020 1590 or awalker@uwic.ac.uk

Technology applications respond to clapping, percussion and movement

Sensory Design Wendy Keay-Bright is a Reader in Inclusive Design at the Cardiff School of Art and Design. Her research focuses on the playfulness of children with severe Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC) as they interact expressively with technology. Wendy has already won numerous awards for her work developing ReacTickles – an interactive creativity tool for children with ASC. Now thanks to a £10,000 donation from the Rayne Foundation, she is able to develop her work with a project involving children at the Ashgrove School in Penarth. This project will lead to new technology applications, designed with the children to help improve their selfconfidence and creativity. Children with ASC are often disenfranchised when it comes to the co-creation and application of new technologies. This design process intends to be exemplar so the end-users of such products are not excluded in the future. The resulting applications could be used in clinical, educational and recreational contexts.

CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE... Honey is a complex substance made up of over 200 components and it has been found that it acts against pathogens via more than one mechanism. It is unusual for an antimicrobial agent such as honey to have different modes of action on different bacteria. This has led Professor Cooper and her team to determine the precise target sites of manuka honey in an antibiotic-resistant strain of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which is a particularly difficult organism to manage clinically. Preliminary data in this study revealed that manuka honey interrupts division and separation of cells that normally occurs when MRSA is increasing in number. Professor Cooper’s work has been recognised internationally and it could lead to new treatments for patients with MRSA. Without their support, this work would not be able to go ahead. The project is being generously funded by the Waterloo Foundation and the Sir Halley Stewart Trust.

New partnership for the UWIC Food Industry Centre The Food Industry Centre (FIC) at UWIC is delighted to announce a new partnership with Lock Inspection Systems Ltd, who are a leading supplier of industrial metal detection equipment. They have generously donated and installed a new metal detector in the Centre, which will be used for training staff and students. Metal detection is anvital part of food manufacturing as it is used to detect contamination. Helen Taylor, Operations and Technical Manager at the Food Industry Centre said:

Simon Taylor of Lock Inspection Systems with Helen Taylor of the FIC with the new metal detector

“The food industry is a highly competitive sector and the demands on processors are increasing, particularly in aspects of product safety and customer expectations. Confidence in food safety is crucial to the reputation of the industry. We at the Zero2five Food Industry Centre are fortunate to be working with the long established global metal detection specialists Lock Inspections Systems, this partnership will enrich the education and expertise of undergraduate and postgraduate students currently studying at UWIC and graduates working in food companies.”

Fundraising News round-up

Fundraising News round-up UWIC Dance A donation of £250 from the Oakdale Trust helped the Dance Department purchase costumes for their end of year performance. Sally Varrall, the BA (Hons) Dance degree Programme Director “The students were very appreciative of this financial support that contributed to enhancing and realising the production of the new work [made by Viivi Keskinen]. The costumes contributed to the sense of unity that was a central theme of the dance”.

Wales Sports Centre for the Disabled The Wales Sports Centre for the Disabled (WSCD) at the Cyncoed Campus owes its existence to the commitment and support of paralympian John Harris and Chris Hallam MBE. 17 years ago they completed a 400 mile wheelchair push around the perimeter of Wales raising £250,000 which funded its creation.

Library developments Over £5,000 has been donated in support of UWIC Libraries since we started fundraising in January 2009. Having recently opened a brand new extension to the existing building in Llandaff, this could not have come at a better time. Alongside purchasing high demand books and e-resources, UWIC libraries are delighted with a new piece of equipment they were able to purchase due to the kind support from staff and alumni. The new desktop projector and the portable screen will be of great benefit to students by raising their awareness of resources that can support their learning and research, for example demonstrating new electronic databases. This will be done through displays or tailored training sessions. We are really grateful to a number of staff and alumni who have committed to a regular monthly donation to UWIC Libraries. This will play a huge role in improving resources for current students.

After many years of the facility being used to its full potential, much of the equipment needs to be replaced. We began fundraising in 2009 to purchase the most heavily used items of equipment and over £13,000 has been raised! This has enabled the purchase of a new Dual Adjustable Pulley machine, a bicep curl machine, a leg press machine and a seated elliptical machine for cardiovascular workout.

“This new equipment is excellent and has really improved my workout overall. Finding a gym that is fully accessible as a wheelchair user, with specialized equipment is surprisingly difficult, so the Wales Sports Centre for the Disabled at UWIC is really important to me. I’ve been coming here since it opened!” Mark, WSCD user
