Research Driven The theme for the Calendar this year is Research Driven. In it we highlight our Research Students, both past and present, men and women of courage and endurance who have plunged headlong into the exciting world of research and discovery. They are driven by a thirst for knowledge and a desire to make a significant impact in their various spheres of study. Undaunted in their quest, we wish to recognize and applaud their work and attainment. They stand here representing every student at our University. To those who have moved on we say “Well done”. To those still in the trenches we say “Press on. The prize is for those who will endure to the end.”

Let us remember that: “True education means more than the pursual of a certain course of study. It means more than a preparation for the life that now is. It has to do with the whole being, and with the whole period of existence possible to man. It is the harmonious development of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual powers. It prepares the student for the joy of service in this world and for the higher joy of wider service in the world to come. – {Ed 13.1}

My journey at the University of the West Indies (UWI) was an growth and development. Though challenges and tribulations were encountered, these did not hinder me from achieving my ultimate goal of pursuing the PhD degree. I was fortunate to have obtained a scholarship from the Sir Arthur Lewis of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) where I was a research associate assigned to a climate change allowed me the opportunity to traverse with expertise in the areas of Geomatics Engineering, Urban Planning and Sociology. I was also given the opportunity to attend conferences, training programmes, and workshops locally, regionally and internationally – all of which were funded by the UWI. As such, being in the MPhil/PhD programme has the perks of allowing students to travel and partake in events as well as

Upon entering the program, it is therefore necessary to have measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound. This is essential in ensuring that the course of study is completed within the allocated time-frame, and prospective challenges are mitigated.

“At the turn of the 21st century, International engineering bodies came to the realisation that a void existed within the graduates to address the current and future challenges faced by the construction industry. These graduates were to become future leaders within the industry, however, leadership skills were non-existent. This led to a call for leadership skills to be more explicitly included in our educational programmes. My PhD study puts forward the design of an innovative capstone course intended to assess the demonstrated leadership skills of postgraduate construction management and civil engineering students. Using project-based learning and the incorporation of Engineering, and Project Management, the students were better prepared for the ‘real world’. The study has provided engineering educators with a reliable measure of the leadership skills demonstrated by their students. This incorporated the use of self-assessment, peer-assessment, and teacher assessment through various strategies.”

training I received as a Cultural Studies student. I utilized a critical ethnographic lens to explore the Jamaican rock music scene. As an area of study, the rock music community supplied me with fresh experiences on nationhood, popular music and glocal citizenship. My research assessed Jamaican music as subject to a prejudicial division of socio-cultural and socio-economic capital based on conventional standards of Blackness inherited during colonialism. As a result, the musicians, deejays and performers of local rock music experienced hardships because of the perceived “foreign nature of the genre. I am proud to have undertaken this work as it adds to Caribbean scholarship on popular music and brings awareness to the

Importance of Anthropometry Research at The UWI, St. Augustine Campus This research project was fraught with trials, ranging from obtaining international training to having a limited sample size. It challenged my motivation daily. Fortunately, combined perseverance, determined action expressed in popularizing anthropometry and its importance in our society. Anthropometric data (precise bodily measurements) is the only source from which thorough and accurate knowledge of dimensions and physical characteristics of the human body can be attained. Hence, its application and spatial requirements of the human body. Trinidad and Tobago has no current anthropometric data; therefore the extent of physical variability in this ethnically diverse population is unknown. This research is pivotal in determining which international anthropometric protocol may be best suited for developing an anthropometric database industrial engineering, occupational health and safety, bio-engineering, ergonimics, medical and nutritional assessment.

The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago proposes to introduce inclusive education. This constructivist grounded theory inquiry explored stakeholders’ perspectives on Tobago’s readiness for this educational change using a symbolic interactionist conceptual framework. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with principals, teachers, parents and students of two special schools and three primary schools in Tobago.

Data revealed that participants possessed an eclectic model of disability that included elements of the medical, social and religious models. Inclusive education was being introduced within a survivalist matrix of exclusionary beliefs and practices which threatened its success. The matrix maps the Tobago’s context, history and traditions of exclusion in schools and society and the desired ideal of a social justice idea of inclusive education consistent with the principles enshrined in international, regional and local documents

interactionism as stakeholders interact and interpret those interactions and how they react to those meanings. Exclusion and social justice are incompatible but eliminating deeply embedded cultures, beliefs and practices is challenging. Recommendations for successful implementation and eradicating the survivalist matrix of exclusionary practices and beliefs included providing adequate supports and changing stakeholders’ attitudes to persons with disabilities. The results of this study could assist policymakers in developing an major educational change.

For me, Research is something I do everyday. Did she just say everyday? We all know that research requires daily inspiration, constant dedication and planning. While these are some of the requirements for research to be carried out, being persistent, that is, ‘hitting at it everyday’ is key to getting the work done for me. Also, I found myself constantly talking my research with my Supervisors, colleagues, friends, family members and of course to the evolution and development of my research. As such, thus coals in Trinidad. Yes, coals! This work has been able to recreate past depositional environments, peak temperatures and in situ transformation processes not only for Trinidad coals but for tropical coals worldwide. Hence, this gives us a better geological understanding of the Erin Formation, Trinidad which contains the coals studied.
