COMMUNITY PARTNERS IN ACTION SENIOR LIFE MIDLAND Meals on Wheels

Did you know...across the nation, 1 in 6 seniors struggles with hunger? Each weekday, Senior Life volunteer drivers take one of 38 routes to deliver an average of 500 hot, healthy meals to the frail and home-bound throughout Midland. MIDLAND FAIR HAVENS

Chasidy came to MFH from Teen Challenge. She was awarded Deferred Adjudication for a felony arrest from 2015 which allowed her to participate in the Midland County Drug Court program.

Her desire was to get her 3 children back into her life and return to school. She was hesitant to do either of these things without the structure and support she had experienced while she was at Teen Challenge. In 7 months at MFH, she’s made amazing growth. She’s invested in personal healing through counseling, support groups and church attendance. She’s retained a job and was given a raise which has allowed her to build an emergency fund, start a savings, and retire debt. She’s started at MC and plans to transfer to UTPB this fall. Most importantly, she’s reestablished her role as mother to her 3 beautiful children. Chasidy recently stated, “I wasn’t ready to walk back into the world from which I’d fallen so many times and Midland Fair Havens has been a way for me to be successful.”

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF THE PB Core Club Programming

Yovanna is an energetic, talkative 11-year-old. She is in the fifth grade and has been going to the Taylor Park Boys & Girls Club since she was 6 years old. “It’s really fun. I actually do talk about the Boys and Girls Club a lot when I’m at school,” said Yovanna. The Club is often the last or only option for families in many disadvantaged areas—providing, among other opportunities, reading programs, field trips, organized sports, arts and crafts, and access to computers for homework.

“I would use the computers a lot last year because I had a Google classroom,” Yovanna explained. “I don’t have a computer at home, so I used the computers here to do my assignments and homework.”

Cindy has two young boys, both that had been sick for several days with no improvement. She is a single mom who had insurance through her employer until she was laid off due to COVID-19. She called her doctor’s office, but when they told her the basic fee would be $180, and tests needed would be additional, she was distraught. She knew she could not cover the cost of the visit, tests, and medication. In desperation, she contacted the school nurse, who referred her to Community Children’s Clinic. Dr. Case examined both boys and after running a few tests, they were diagnosed with strep throat.

When Cindy discovered the medication was included in the price of the visit, she was overjoyed. “I didn’t know what I was going to do.” They left with Tylenol, antibiotics, and toothbrushes. Everything they needed for a quick recovery.

COVID-19 RESPONSE SENIOR SUPPORT PROJECT

In collaboration with Senior Life of Midland, Casa de Amigos, the Area Agency on Aging, and the City of Midland, we worked together to ensure that the needs of seniors, those who are homebound, and other vulnerable populations were met. The Senior Support program included free services to staff a call center and provided follow up calls to those in need of assistance, obtain and deliver food for those who were homebound or could not get out, and provided transportation to the pharmacy or appointments.

HEB GIFTCARDS FOR MIDLAND MEMORIAL

We again want to thank Wells Fargo for the thoughtful and collaborative donation to United Way of Midland to support COVID-19 relief efforts. Because of their gift, we were able to purchase HEB gift cards to be distributed to all entry level employees at Midland Memorial Hospital.

COVID-19 ROADMAP

In collaboration with United Way of Odessa and funding from the Henry Foundation, we put together a COVID-19 Roadmap. As many people were needing help for the first time, this booklet served as a roadmap full of local resources to help navigate COVID-19.

EMPLOYEE CAMPAIGN COORDINATORS The Employee Campaign Coordinator (ECC) is a United Way of Midland advocate in the workplace who encourages co-workers to create a stronger community by planning, organizing, and giving to the Annual Campaign. An ECC is the foundation of the work United Way accomplishes in our community, as they are the gatekeeper to the companies and organizations who generously give to the bulk of United Way fundraising efforts. On top of their normal work duties, these ECCs go above and beyond in their volunteer roles with Campaign. We are thankful for all of their amazing work and contribution to our city!
