20222023SEASON
In addition to our traditional line-up of dozens of student ensemble performances, we have invited numerous guest artists to join us this season. The Quince Ensemble, a contemporary treble vocal ensemble featuring faculty soprano Carrie Shaw, presents its subversive and provocative programming on November 7 at Meany’s Gerlich Theater. The city’s premiere new music group, the Seattle Modern Orchestra, performs works by UW composers on Feb. 7 and local chamber orchestra Philharmonia Northwest returns to the UW on Feb. 24 for a program of concerto movements with students from the UW Piano Program. The world-renowned Ensemble Dal Niente takes to the Meany stage on April 14 to present works by UW Composition faculty, a performance originally scheduled for spring of 2020. The group is joined by faculty violist Melia Watras, who presents her own recital of original and commissioned works on May 4. Our faculty performance series in the coming season also includes recitals by violinist Rachel Lee Priday, with guest pianist Bryan Wallick (Oct. 18), pianist Cristina Valdés (Nov. 1), violinist Tekla Cunningham (Jan. 25), pianist Robin McCabe, joined by her sister, pianist Rachelle McCabe (April 6), soprano Carrie Shaw, joined by faculty colleagues Bonnie Whiting and Cristina Valdés (April 7), and pianist Craig Sheppard (May 8), presenting a program of the complete Chopin Nocturnes. Sheppard also performs on Feb. 27 with faculty colleagues Rachel Lee Priday, Benjamin Lulich, and Sarah Rommel (joining our faculty this fall as an artist-in-residence in cello performance) in a presentation of Olivier Messiaen’s renowned Quartet for the End of Time Visiting artist concerts hosted by our Ethnomusicology Program this season include Miguel Ballumbrosio (Afro-Peruvian music and dance) on Dec. 7, Jeffrey Busch (Brazilian percussion) on March 7 and Srivani Jade (Music from North India) on May 18. The artists are joined in these performances by their UW students and special guests.

Messiaen: Quartet for the End of Time
The Quartet for the End of Time is one of Messiaen’s signature works, composed during his detention in a prisoner-of-war camp in Poland in 1940-41. As a devout Catholic, Messiaen was inspired by portions of the tenth chapter of the Book of Revelation, when the mighty angel descends from the heavens, surrounded by the rainbow, the sun and the fire.
Selected from 689 applicants from 44 countries, composer Chris Trapani was awarded the Barlow commission for a new song cycle to be premiered by an elite quartet of sopranos, including UW’s own Carrie Shaw. Hear the premiere of this major contribution to American art song, alongside works by living composers from around the world in her program The Weight of Sweetness: Songs for All the Senses. Shaw is joined onstage by faculty colleagues Bonnie Whiting, percussion; and Cristina Valdés, piano.

Vocalist Carrie Henneman Shaw and violinist Michael Jinsoo Lim join Watras onstage.
Robin and Rachelle McCabe: Double Play Pianists Robin and Rachelle McCabe return to the Meany stage to perform Brahms’ magisterial two piano arrangement of his F minor quintet as well as music by Ravel and others in this spirited display of sisterly chemistry.
