2024–25 SEASON
WELCOME
Our 2024-25 concert season kicks off in early October with a multimedia album release celebration by violinist Rachel Lee Priday (Oct. 8) and wraps up in early June with performances by our students performing winning concerto excerpts with the UW Symphony Orchestra (June 6). In between are dozens of additional performance and music-related events presented by our faculty, students, and guest artists.
Special guests joining us in 2024-25 include “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band (Oct. 30), making a third return appearance at the UW, School of Music alumnus Zhao-Rong “Peter” Chen, now on the faculty of several well-regarded institutions throughout China, returning to headline a Flute Celebration Day presented by the School of Music and the Seattle Flute Society (Nov. 10), and several guest ensembles, including Harmonia, performing concerto excerpts with UW Piano Students (Feb. 20), Seattle Modern Orchestra, performing a Joël-François Durand tribute concert (March 12), Eroica Trio (April 16), presenting an evening of chamber music, and Ekmeles Vocal Ensemble (May 22), performing new vocal works by UW faculty composers. Visiting Artist concerts in 2024-25 include Miguel Ballumbrosio (Afro-Peruvian Music and Dance) on Dec. 3, and Silvio Dos Reis (Afro-Brazilian Capoeira) on June 3. The artists are joined in these performances by their UW students and special guests.
Our faculty have a wide range of programming planned for the coming year. Soprano Carrie Shaw is joined by members of chamber group Dal Niente in a concert of modern works for voice and winds (Oct. 11), pianist Cristina Valdés performs works by Charles Ives and Arnold Schoenberg in observance of the 150th birthday of the composers (Oct. 23), organist Stephen Price is joined by violinist Rachel Lee Priday for a recital at Seattle’s Plymouth Church (Nov. 12), pianist Craig Sheppard is joined by colleagues in a concert of Fauré piano quartets (Nov. 18), violinist Tekla Cunningham performs solo works for Baroque violin (April 10), John-Carlos Perea presents a concert of jazz inspired works for cedar flute and other instruments (April 18), newly appointed professor of music Stephanie Richards, trumpet, is joined by UW colleagues in her debut Meany Hall performance (April 22), pianist Robin McCabe performs solo and with her UW students (April 24), violist Melia Watras and writer Sean Harvey premiere their latest new work, Broken Bell (May 5), and pianist Craig Sheppard returns to the Meany main stage for a solo performance of works by French composers (May 15).
At the heart of every concert season at the School of Music is a multitude of performances by our students, in large and small ensembles, small groups, solo, and sometimes on the podium as conductors of their own ensembles. ETHNOMUSICOLOGY VISITING ARTISTS
The School of Music and its Ethnomusicology Program continue a half-century tradition of bringing musicians from around the world to the UW campus. The artists are joined by their students and special guests in these end-of-quarter performances.

Miguel Ballumbrosio: Afro-Peruvian Music and Dance
Autumn Quarter Ethnomusicology Visiting Artist Miguel Ballumbrosio presents a performance of Afro-Peruvian dance and music traditions from the region of Chincha, where several generations of his family have been prominent culture bearers. He is accompanied by students from his classes in University of Washington Music and Dance.

Silvio Dos Reis: Afro-Brazilian Capoeira
Ethnomusicology Visiting Artist Silvio Dos Reis, known to his students as Mestre Silvinho, is a master of Capoeira Angola, an Afro-Brazilian martial art that integrates music, movement, and philosophy. In a culmination of his two-quarter residency at the UW, he and his UW students from Music and Dance present an end-of-quarter performance including music and movement of Capoeira Angola from Brazil.

America’s oldest professional musical organization, the Marine Band, has performed for every U.S. president since John Adams. This concert features a variety of patriotic favorites, concert band classics, and orchestral transcriptions.

The School of Music joins with the Seattle Flute Society (SFS) for its Flute Celebration Day, featuring Professor Zhao-Rong Peter Chen, School of Music alumnus and faculty member at China Conservatory of Music and other highly regarded institutions throughout China. His performance is followed by additional performances from the Seattle Flute Society Flute Choir and other SFS members.

Seattle Modern Orchestra: Tribute: Joël-François Durand
Seattle Modern Orchestra (SMO) completes its third annual residency at the UW with a celebration of UW Composition Professor and School of Music Director Joël-François Durand’s 70th birthday. In addition to new works by UW graduate student composers the concert also includes a group of seven instrumentalists presenting the world premiere of several short tribute pieces by Durand’s former students, including longtime SMO contributors Jérémy Jolley, Jeff Bowen, and Yiğit Kolat alongside Eric Flesher and Ryan Hare, plus new poetry for the occasion by Helena Tibocha.

Artist-in-residence Tekla Cunningham plays works for solo baroque violin by Pisendel, Telemann, and a newly commissioned work by Melia Watras in this recital combining music for solo baroque violin with the stunning choreography of Anna Mansbridge. See, hear and feel the heartbreak and solace of Bach’s iconic Ciaccona as embodied on the Meany Hall stage by dancers Tshedzom Tingke and Alejandro Frederickson in new choreography by Mansbridge in this collaboration between the School of Music and the newly minted Seattle Bach Festival.

John-Carlos Perea
John-Carlos Perea and guests perform “Improvising Home” for jazz ensemble. Originally commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission and composed by Perea in 2016, this performance revisits and reinterprets the score following Perea’s 2023 arrival at the UW, where he serves as Ethnomusicology associate professor and adjunct associate professor of American Indian Studies.

Around Robin
Professor Robin McCabe brings pianistic virtuosity to the Meany mainstage, performing solo works of Ravel and Fauré in the first half of her program. In the second half, she is joined by groups of her students in rousing transcriptions for two pianos, eight hands, including arrangements of Bizet’s “Carmen Fantasy,” a Mozart opera overture, and a barn-burning version of “Stars and Stripes Forever.”

Violist/composer Melia Watras and writer Sean Harvey unveil their latest collaboration, Broken Bell, a mashup of a concert and a play. Your Season Pass to UW Music
The School of Music Notecard is a season pass to ticketed performances on the School of Music concert season. Notecards in 2024-25 are $90 ($75 for seniors, students, UWAA, and UW employee/retiree) and are valid for admission to nearly all ticketed events on our season.*
* Notecard not valid for the Oct. 30 concert by the U.S. Marine Band. Notecard patrons advised to arrange tickets in advance for IMPFEST performances (April 25, 26) as seating capacity is limited.

PARKING
Parking for performances in Meany Theater, Meany Studio Theatre, and Walker-Ames Room
Underground parking
Parking is available in the Central Plaza Garage (CPG) underneath Meany Hall. Enter the CPG at the corner of 15th Ave NE and NE 41st Street, on the west side of campus. A $13.50 non-refundable flat rate is charged for evening events (4 pm or after).
Above-ground parking
Enter the UW campus at NE 45th Street and 17th Avenue NE, near the Burke Museum. The evening rate is $6.75. Lot N01 is the closest above-ground parking lot to Meany Hall.
Parking for events in the School of Music’s Brechemin Auditorium
Enter the north end of campus (NE 45th Street and 17th Avenue NE), near the Burke Museum or enter on the east side of campus (Pend Oreille Road, off 25th Avenue NE). The evening rate is $6.75. The Padelford Parking Garage (N 20, 21) is the closest visitor parking to the Music Building. Disability parking is available at Lot N22 north of the Husky Union Building.

Music Free for All
The School of Music is committed to increasing access to live musical performances for all who wish to attend. For audience members of limited income and in the interest of removing barriers to attendance at our concerts, the School of Music reserves 20 free tickets for each of its ticketed Gerlich Theater performances at Meany Hall and 10 free tickets to its Meany Studio Theater performances for release to the public one hour before show time.* Patrons may request up to two tickets on a first come, first served basis. Just ask for “Free for All” tickets at the venue box office, and you and your companion will be admitted at no charge, subject to availability.
