2023–24 SEASON

A new concert season at the School of Music sets forth a schedule of performances tied to the academic calendar and the fruition of faculty research oftentimes years in the making. Our 2023-24 season sees the return of longtime favorites, end-of-quarter student ensemble concerts, new projects, collaborations, esteemed guests, and more faculty concerts than ever before.
The first of those features our Brass Studio Faculty —all members of the Seattle Symphony— kicking off our season with a brass quintet concert on Oct. 2 at Meany Hall. Soon after, percussionist Bonnie Whiting performs experimental music for speaking percussionist (Oct. 8), guitarist Michael Partington celebrates his 11th album release (Oct. 20), and Jazz Studies Professor Marc Seales presents the first of three performances set for the coming year (Oct. 13, Jan. 19, May 17). October ends with the return of an old favorite—the Halloween Organ Concert—hosted by Stephen Price, our inaugural Paul B. Fritts Fellow in Organ Performance (Oct. 30). In November we present a duo recital by cellist Sarah Rommel and pianist Craig Sheppard (Nov. 6) and Melia Watras and guests Atar Arad and Flora Cummings explore their viola family tree (Nov. 30). In early 2024, drummer Ted Poor makes his solo debut at Meany Hall (Jan. 9), violinist Tekla Cunningham and friends perform chamber music by Mozart and others on period instruments (Jan. 12), chamber group Frequency explores the musical form of themes and variations (Jan. 22), and violinist Rachel Lee Priday and pianist Craig Sheppard perform music by Bartók, Fauré, Pärt, and Schubert (Jan. 30). In February, Cuong Vu and Cristina Valdés premiere new works for piano and trumpet (Feb. 12) and soprano Carrie Shaw and trio mates in uluuul stage explorations in vocal timbre (Feb. 23). In April, faculty pianists Robin McCabe, Craig Sheppard, and Cristina Valdés, joined by Rachelle McCabe, present “Piano Power,” a program for two pianos, eight hands (April 30).
Special guests this season include acclaimed pianist Garrick Ohlsson, joining us for three days of master classes and a panel discussion (Nov. 28-30), the Mivos Quartet , performing music by UW faculty composers (March 29), Northwest Sinfonietta, performing with UW piano students (April 12), and the Seattle Modern Orchestra, joining our UW Modern Music Ensemble for a concert of works by UW student composers (May 3).
Ethnomusicology Visiting Artist concerts in 2023-24 include Otoqui Reyes (Puerto Rican Bomba) on Dec. 5, Shoji Kameda (Taiko drumming) on March 5 and Aboubacar “Boka” Kouyaté (West African music) on May 16. The artists are joined in these performances by their UW students and special guests.
And that is just a start! As you will hear, we have a lot to offer this season. We appreciate your support!
