This issue was a doozey to try and put together. I don't think we've had an edition quite as jam-packed full of stuff as this one! Definitely a full month's worth of reading here, kids. First off, we'd just like to give a warm congratulations to Fraser, the winner of Gay Top Model. He's the perfect choice to represent Vancouver as we go into a new decade, and a pleasure to work with. Photographer Ian Sheh shot his winning cover for V-Rag as well as the spread featured on page 28. Lots of great talent in this issue including two New York legends, Sherry Vine and Joey Arias. The pair have been performing together for decades and Vancouver is lucky enough to host them both this month! Also, we managed to catch up with the one and only Andy Butler of Hercules & Love Affair. He gives all of you lucky readers a sneak peak at the brand new album and the inspiration behind it. May is a very busy month for events in Vancouver, and V-Rag is the place to get the scoop on all of them. The 2010 Vancouver International Burlesque Festival hits the Rickshaw Theatre May 6-9 and we've included a guide to all the goings-on. On the drag side of things, the annual Wiggle party turns Sweet Sixteen and the New Yorkinspired ball Opulence returns to Vancouver on May 5 at the Lotus. Oh wait, this is Cotton's job to tell you all this stuff! She rounds up our host of regular features (which seems to be growing by the month), and joins Joan-E's Rag, Terry Costa's Live On Stage, and Rob Easton's Wasted Thoughts. Yet another addition this month is Food:Notes, courtesy of PINQ.CA's Ryan Bazeley, where we review the best new restaurants in our fair city. Now dig in! V

ARIAS

by Michael Venus

J

oey Arias is a New York-based drag icon who came out of the pivotal eighties performance art scene. Gender bending and hanging out with Andy Warhol while performing alongside Klaus Nomi and David Bowie, he later re-invented himself into a Fantastical Fetish Diva who shocked audiences with his ability to “channel” Billie Holiday. Joey has dazzled the globe ever since and continues to perform and inspire. He is an accomplished and infamous living legend. Tell us about working with Klaus Nomi and David Bowie. Klaus was my best friend and we did everything together. When Bowie invited Klaus to work with him, Bowie asked if I could join them. That was a dream come true. I've always loved David. He was the funniest person I ever met. Just vibrating with excitement! Highlights while working on Zumanity? Working with Cirque duSoliel was just an amazing experience, especially with Manfred Thierry Mugler as Artistic Director of the personas to be presented. There are so many stories that I could write a book. For instance in the orgy scene, a 90-year-old woman took her tits out and started sucking them and wanted to suck cock on stage... She was a horny fuck, thank god. Sex is Beautiful. What are some of your career highlights?

6

I think a NYC highlight was to perform at Carnegie Hall channeling Billie Holiday. That blew me away.

Who are you current inspirations? My inspirations are anyone who has an open mind and wants to create... Like Basil Twist. He's a child and lover of dreams and magic. Working with Sherry Vine and her aspirations of searching for the ultimate show. And the of course Mr. Thierry Mugler who directs me and watches that I don't do anything stupid. And my future husband. What are you fave things about Vancouver? I love Vancouver and it’s really been so good to me... I've met so many wonderful people... Love the landscape from the bedroom window. Vancouver is so open-mined from the times I've been there, and the boys were lined up around the toilet waiting for a good conversation... And I saw some big conversations there. Upcoming projects? Upcoming, I'm working with Miss Vine in our new show... The film Arias With A Twist, the docu-fantasy that's opening many film festivals... and my new solo show presented by Earl Dax and directed by Manfred Thierry Mugler. It’s gonna be something very musical. Any words of wisdom? Words of wisdom... Let inspiration guide you and don’t be afraid of the dark... The only monster is you. Chase your nightmare because it will pay off! Joey Arias will perform with Sherry Vine for the Looking Back at the Future show at Five Sixty nightclub on May 2. www.joeyarias.com

VINE

by Michael Venus

S

herry Vine has recently gained immense attention from her parody videos on YouTube, most notably her Lady Gaga spoofs, which have millions and millions of hits. Sherry came out of the New York City club scene in the early nineties, an original that continues to bring her bombshell charm while performing live. Recently, she has added television guest appearances to her list of credits. Sherry now lives in Berlin, honing her craft and gaining even more cabaret credibility. You have been getting so much attention for your fabulous video spoofs, especially The Lady Gaga "Bad Romance" one. How did you start making them, what is the process and have you met Gaga yet? I've been doing video spoofs for a few years just for fun and to generate some publicity on YouTube. But I never expected the success that came with the "Bad Romance" parody [Sherry's Version is titled "Shit My Pants"]. Who knew poo was so popular? The process is a dollar and a prayer. Haha! I'm blessed to be surrounded by so many talented people who are into helping out. I met Gaga once right before she exploded into superstardom. She was SOOOOOOO nice! Tell us a bit about your show here in Vancouver and what we can expect? Well Joey and I have been performing together all over the world for over 10 years but this will be our Vancouver premiere together! So we are going to turn it out with the "big hooker hits"! What are some of your career highlights?

I have so many highlights! I've been so lucky to have been making a living doing what I love so I give thanks every day. Who are you current inspirations? I am inspired certainly by Lady GaGa - I think she's the hottest thing since adult diapers. And anytime I need inspiration I look at videos or pictures of Debbie Harry! What are you fave things about Vancouver? My fave thing in Vancouver is Cotton of course! I was only there for a short time but I remember a lovely day strolling along the water. Upcoming projects? Right now I'm focused on the tour with Joey. I have a new video parody of "Telephone" coming out next week. And then I will be performing the Gay Pride circuit in Europe all summer. Any words of wisdom? Get The Money First! Sherry Vine will perform with Joey Arias for the Looking Back at the Future show at Five Sixty nightclub on May 2. sherryvine.com

"Sometimes I feel like there is a bullet pointed at me...""

A

ndy Butler is hyper today. Or it could be the jet-lag. Either way, the driving force behind Hercules & Love Affair, one of the most hyped musical endeavors to come out of New York City of late, is back in the beautiful city of Vienna after a quick jaunt to Tel Aviv. He has returned to the Austrian capital to finish remixing a song for a young English band, and then he’ll fly to Moscow for a one-night-only DJ gig. All this comes after Butler just put the final touches on Hercules & Love Affair’s second album, the highly anticipated follow-up to his 2008 debut Hercules & Love Affair. So it’s easy to pardon Butler for sounding a bit frazzled today — he pauses the interview as he walks into a Viennese shop to buy cigarettes — because he’s simply riding the wave. When Hercules’ first smash hit “Blind”, featuring Antony Hegarty of Antony and The Johnsons, was named Pitchfork Media’s number one song of 2008, media and fans started salivating at what the dapper redhead might come up with next. Judging his emotional involvement with the new yet-to-be-named album, it sounds

promising. The disco sensibility that gives the group its identity will remain, but an entirely new cast of musicians (sans Kim Ann Foxman) was brought in to give the band new energy. There’s a hint of relief in Butler’s voice as he talks about labouring through the little details of working on the record. “Some of these songs, I had written them a while ago and some of them were written years ago,” he says. “Now making these final decisions is like, it sounds strange, but it almost got to a point where the decisions don’t matter. I just want it to be finished.” Though “Blind” was released in 2008, it has almost been eight years since Butler and Hegarty collaborated on it. Now that he’s this close to releasing his next batch of songs to the world, the friendly frontman is as happy as a new mother. But he’s still wincing from the labour pains. “It’s not that I’m sick of [the songs], because they’re my songs, they’re the most precious things in the world to me other than the people I love,” he explains. “It’s just that, by the time it’s all happening, how do I explain this…” He trails off, the sound of somebody rushing somewhere still coming through the telephone. A door closes. Butler is ready to draw more parallels between releasing an album and giving birth. “This is such a trite analogy, and I have no experience with this and I never will,” he begins. “If you had a baby inside of you for nine months, there are times

vanragazine #11 when you fucking hate this baby, no matter who you are. It’s kicking, you’re barfing, you want to eat weird food, then the baby comes out and it’s the happiest thing in the world. That’s kind of how it was for me.” The new album features musicians as diverse as Berlin operatic singer Ayria Negrot, who according to Butler, possesses “the voice that can be as grandiose and big as a Grace Jones or Eartha Kitt, but delicate as the most delicate of singers, Kate Bush, you know. She’s amazing.” But the big name attached to the record this time is Kele Okereke, lead singer for the British indie band Bloc Party. Butler remains tight-lipped on whether the material the two recorded together will make its way onto the album, but it’s hard to imagine it wouldn’t — Okereke’s wailing vocals would tantalize stacked up against a smooth disco beat. “Kele and I did do some material that might end up on the record,” Butler says coyly. “He’s very cool and he offers a really different perspective to my usual kind of crew.” Whether or not Okereke makes an appearance, this Hercules & Love Affair album will likely face intense scrutiny from the oftfickle indie music media. Butler maintains that he wrote the last album for his mother (not Pitchfork), his loved ones, and for the sake of writing music. But he also readily admits feeling the weight of critic’s expectations heaped upon him. “There is a lot of pressure,” he says. “Sometimes I feel like there is a bullet pointed at me and the best that can happen is if I dodge it. “I feel proud of [the album] though. It’s like after I gave birth I couldn’t look at my child for days, it was in the protective incubator thing,” he says, not one to waste a good analogy. “And I leave it there because I’m not ready to see it, and then finally the nurse comes to me and says ‘You seem like a very negligent mother.’ So then I go to look at it, and it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.” Or in this case, heard. V Andy Butler performed a DJ set last month in Vancouver and is eager to return.

ueer Bash and SadMag starlet Crystal Precious is back as President of the 2010 Vancouver International Burlesque Festival! Which means glitzier costumes, more extravagant performances and bigger... personalities. This year's VIBFA is set to be the largest in their five year. If you don't follow the Vancouver burlesque scene, you really should. In a city where art and performance is sometimes hard to find, these girls (and occasionally boys) know how to get a crowd going. Popularity has definitely been increasing in the last few years, with weekly burlesque nights popping up in clubs and bars around the city. The Biltmore Cabaret, J Lounge, the Wise Hall and Maxine's Hideaway have all welcomed the burlesque scene with open arms. This year's VIBFA will take over the Rickshaw Theatre for 4 glittery nights from May 6 through to May 9. Legendary burlesque starlets Judith Stein (one of the greatest performers to come out of B.C.) and Tiffany Carter (Miss Nude Universe 1975) will headline the festival, along with NYC's godfather of boylesque Tigger. The latter, named 2009's Top Male Burlesque Performer, will appear every night of the festival.

t’s already starting to feel like summer here in the city of Vancouver. And like summer movie blockbusters, O.P.U.L.E.N.C.E.— one of the “parties to be at”—kicks off at the beginning of May; May 5th, to be exact. The Opulence Ball, as the name suggests, is a night of extreme fashion exhibitionism and killer dance moves. Opulence has it’s roots in the drag scene in New York City during the late 1980s; think Paris is Burning. It’s part runway showdown, part vogue-off, and a whole lot of fierce competition. And it’s going to be meticulously recreated at Lotus Sound Lounge for all your viewing pleasure. With so many diverse categories to compete in, from Butch Queen and Femme Realness, to High Fashion Parisian and Vegas Showgirl, anyone can enter to win “Legendary” status: boys and girls, kings and queens, or something in between. All that’s required is a flair for the dramatic and the ability to shake what you’ve got and then hold it when it’s hot. If you’re on the timid side, don’t fret. The House of Opulence welcomes and encourages voyeurs. Trust me, there will be plenty to see. Hosted by the opulent “Mother of the House” Conni Smudge, with performances by Joan-E, Carlotta Guuurl, Jenny Magenta, and Symone, this will be a night not soon forgotten. If you don’t already have your tickets (which you should) they are available at Little Sisters and Priape on Davie, and at Pulp Fiction Books on Main. And if you still need some convincing, visit houseofopulence.blogspot.com for more information and some great video clips for inspiration. Start the season in O.P.U.L.E.N.C.E. V

WIGGLE by Jeff Lawrence

ust off your glue guns, ladies and gentlemen. It’s time for another edition of Vancouver’s only wearable art and headpiece festival: Wiggle. V-Rag had the chance to catch up with Cotton Venus, the blonde bombshell of a whoa-man who birthed the annual event almost 15 years ago. This year Wiggle celebrates its 16th birthday at the all-new 560 Club and Miss Cotton, all six feet of her, talks animatedly about how long it has gone on for. “I always had the intent of doing it for 20 years,” she says, “even though I’m only 16.” She winks. “I was born pretty much when Wiggle was born.” She laughs when I mention she looks a little older than 16. “Hollywood North’s been rough,” she quips. For those who have never been to a Wiggle event in years past, Cotton sums it up: “It features unbelievable, out-of-this-world creations from Vancouver’s innovators in fashion, performance and art.” Anyone with an ounce of creative ability is able to submit their headpiece or extravagant wig into the show. “Some people do really design-inspired pieces that are very simplistic, and some people go extravagant and really glamourpuss. But there’s no limits on diverse creativity,” she says. Since the event began in Ontario, where Venus is from, Wiggle has spanned three different cities (Windsor, Detroit and Vancouver) and many star guests, including Lady Bunny and Lady Miss Kier. But the essence of Wiggle remains the same. “It’s grown in different ways with what’s going on in the world, but it’s always kind of remained the same." The reason behind it all is simple, Cotton explains. “Just getting in the spirit of creating these elaborate costumes and headpieces,” she says. “It’s very therapeutic to make these things and you end up with this beautiful, fucked-up thing that just comes from a pure creative place.” V

THIRD KIND by Justin Meisner

D

ating is a superficial endeavor; despite how amazing someone may be on the inside, dating is essentially window shopping and we base our initial decisions on the outside. And while I am the first to admit the significance of one's physical attraction to another, I've never quite understood how someone could instantly write someone else off just because of their height, or their race or a piercing. There isn't a specific "exterior package" I'm looking for; if all my exes were lined up you'd think you were looking at a Benneton ad. As comic Adele Givens so eloquently says, "You gon' fuck around and miss your man with that bullshit." But what about what the other people in our lives think about our potential mate's exterior packages and how much should (or does) it influence our own opinion? Is it right to write off a potential mate because of what our friends think? Last summer I dated this guy I was really into, only thing was, he was really into his friends. Everytime he and I hung out, he needed as many airbags as he could get; in the form of his high school buddies. At first I thought meeting them was a good sign, however I quickly realized his poor friends meet every fucking dude this dude is fucking. Airbag even told me one night that recently there was this one guy that he thought he liked until his friends pointed out some things about his exterior package. It was apparent that what Airbag's friends thought about his potential mates was almost more important than what he thought. But here I am being all high and mighty when just a couple months ago I was dating this awfully nice, yet painfully introverted student from Dublin. It was just a couple weeks in and while nothing was necessarily going well, nothing was going

16

the

wrong. So when time came for my birthday festivities I decided Dublin was going to get the invite. Now unlike Airbag, my friends are acutely aware when they're meeting someone I am dating because it doesn't happen often. I just don't bother wasting their time learning the names of someone I've only gone out with a few times, so clearly I must not care what they think, right? "Bloody hell, this guy is boring," quipped one of my friends who is also from Ireland and therefore should've already had a bias liking for him. The rest of the night I found myself unconsciously ignoring Dublin to the point where the poor bastard left early. And as soon as he was out the door there was a loud general consensus among my friends. But the next morning I was angry at myself; was I really going to let what my friends thought affect how I felt? Besides, my friends are all straight, what the hell do they know? The next night Dublin offered to come over and make me dinner. As we sat there watching Family Guy, the sound of my friends kept ringing in my head; if the evening had had a sound effect, it would have been that of a giant balloon deflating. I never called him again. To this day I can't decide whether I made this decision or if my friends made it for me? All I know is now when I look at the bottom of my potential mates, rather than staring at their ass I'm looking for the words "Warning: in the case of a dating emergency, airbags will deploy". I

've known many drag queens throughout my gay life, whether it's Alita Buffet, a stalwart in Victoria's gay community, or la grande reine du drag à Montréal, Mado. I think I've seen more than my fair share of shows. And if you're lucky enough (or perhaps unlucky), you've seen my transformation into the ambitious, power pumping queen Veronica Huston. In my travels as a lady, I've always felt Vancouver's drag lacks a certain production value. I know I know... I'm being sooo Vancouver by complaining about why someone else doesn't make the city better. We're young. We're pretty. We have nice scenery and a great nude beach. Plus everyone else wants to come here. We get some of the best performers from outside our city to join us here. Plus we can’t expect to have it all in Vancouver.

But I think it’s time some of us woke up to the idea of pushing drag forward. Take someone like Vera Way. She’s unique and artful. Last night I saw her perform a series of tableaux in front of a screaming crowd, her show telling you a story. Most of her pieces are made by paper. “It’s almost like South Park meets drag but it’s a music video.” When talking about drag, she says we miss a lot of interesting visual input in Vancouver. “I think 30 or 40 years ago, seeing a man in a dress was a bigger deal. But now I see men in dresses on Davie street in the middle of the day.” And she agrees that Vancouver drag needs to go in a new direction. “I think the scene has fallen into a bit of a rut. Don't get me wrong, there are some poeple doing some wonderful things.” So here’s the thing. The people paying for this stuff need to take notice. It’s great to see Vera out and about. But really, I’d love some of our queens to get together and really push the envelope of the scene. Why not do something in a theatre space or perhaps something on the main stage at pride? Let's shock Vancouver back into loving drag for its amazing performance value. One day… one day… V

uddy: The Buddy Holly Story is the world’s most successful rock’n roll musical. Arts Club Theatre is the largest and most successful theatre company in British Columbia. Denis Simpson is one of the most accomplished and successful stage performers living in Vancouver. Bring them all together and we have the upcoming, soon to be major hit production of Buddy at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage. The stage life of this talented performer began with the musical Oklahoma when he was in high school. As an immigrant kid from Jamaica, watching Dennis The Menace on TV really lit his fire to pursue a career as a performer; playing Sidney Poitier’s son (in any movie) was his dream. It was after his major breakthrough in the original Canadian Mirvish production of Hair that Denis Simpson knew there was no turning back and his life would be spent on stage. High school drama, piano lessons, being the class clown, even though he admits he was “a shy guy”, were only a few of the first steps before hitting the bright lights of musical theatre and lavish productions across the country and later in life, becoming a BC Hall of Fame inductee. Ain’t Misbehavin’, Angels in America, Master Harold and the Boys, Wang Dang Doodle and being a founding member and singer of the acapella group The Nylons, are only some of the amazing moments Denis created for the stage. His Jessie Award-winning solo show Denis Anyone? also rates quite high in the list of favourites, and one cannot forget the various Broadway productions, including Jesus Christ Superstar and Toronto’s premiere of Indigo. He never got to play Poitier’s son, but an incredible list of roles for the camera overwhelm any fan. The one where he gets most recognized for continues to be the longrun television children series Polka Dot Door. After a production of Buddy at Saskatoon’s Persephone Theatre, Denis is happy to return to the show in a completely new production with the Arts Club Theatre. He believes there are always new frontiers to conquer; maybe the number one reason why we will see him live on stage for a much longer time. He admits it is “nothing compared to life off stage,” yet, it lets him “live it as everyone!” V Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story is at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage from May 13 to July 11 www.artsclub.com

FILM:notes Paris Is Burning: 20th Anniversary D: Jennie Livingston

The Back-up Plan D: Alan Poul

If Wigstock was the defining gay film of the 1990s, Paris Is Burning without a doubt summed up the 80s. From the opening credits, the feeling of late 80s New York City hits you like a ton of brown bricks. The style, the fashion, the music and of course the poverty. Outsider Jennie Livingston decided to examine the world of ballroom competitions, a fascinating mixture of runway walking, drag performance, social commentary and ultimately seeing who's the "realest". The film created such a buzz that it brought underground concepts such as houses, throwing shade, reading and mopping into the mainstream. Madonna was even inspired by the dance form featured in it, voguing, and made it a household term. To say Paris Is Burning influenced an entire generation would be no exaggeration. Now, twenty years after its theatrical release, Paris Is Burning is getting a full special edition release on BluRay and DVD. Relive the ballroom legends like Pepper LaBeija, Venus Xtravaganza, Octavia St. Laurent, Dorian Corey and Willi Ninja, in all their glory days. This is the true old school, a magical time that has thankfully been captured on film. Special features are set to include numerous remastered interviews and scenes never included in the original. So whether you're a newcomer to Paris or a seasoned veteran, this new edition is sure to have something for everyone. Learn it. And learn it well.

In what I can only imagine is an attempt to capitalize on the comedy of the modern, antinuclear family, The Back-Up Plan has absolutely nothing modern going for it. The hilarity of a single working woman wanting to start a family even though Mr. Right is nowhere in sight? Not to mention the plethora of pregnancy and medical humor that basically writes itself once you throw in the added hijinks of in vitro fertilization? No, I've never, ever seen anything that even remotely resembles that... well with Jennifer Lopez and her ass at least. Emmy-Award winning director Alan Poul (which is why I imagine this movie feels like a far too long sitcom pilot that shouldn't have been picked up) does his best to direct an on-point Jennifer Lopez and a poor Alex O'Loughlin who you just can't help but feel sorry for. Lopez plays a woman named Zoe (doesn't this already sound like a film school, first screenplay) who decides to have kids on her own and then immediately meets Mr. Right after she gets pregnant. It's all so unbelievably cookie cutter I am not even going to insult you by attempting to describe the plot in any greater detail, mostly because you've already seen this movie, even if you haven't. And for the record, when I say Jennifer Lopez is "on point" I say that like when Sandra Bullock or Sarah Jessica Parker or Jennifer Aniston are on point, the kind of women who do what they do best (romantic comedy) and can't do much else. And no, that doesn't necessarily mean she was any good.

Rufus Wainwright all days are nights

Glee Cast power of madonna

MGMT selfish

God damn, Rufus Wainwright is good. The last time I could listen to a full album featuring only a singer trading melodies with a piano was Regina Spektor's Songs. While All Days Are Nights isn't quite up to Spektor's level of catchiness, it's a grandiose, beautiful collection of heartfelt tracks that could only come from the esteemed Wainwright, whose DNA dictated long ago he would be a star. Right from the get-go, on the first track "Who Are You New York?", Wainwright stretches his impressive vocals over piano chords like a satin bedsheet over the most comfortable kingsize bed in the world. Not one ounce of drama is lost on this record. You feel for Wainwright on songs like "Martha", addressed to his famous musician sister, about the kids' mother losing her battle with cancer earlier this year. All Days Are Nights might lack some of the panache of Wainwright's contemporaries, but it's a gorgeous album perfect for a rainy day, a bubble bath, or even just gently weeping into your pillow over all the beauty in the world. Seriously.

No matter your opinion of her, Madonna's impact on popular culture is undeniable and over the past year the impact of Glee on popular culture has been remarkable, if not at times a little self-inflated (kind of like Madonna). This collection of classic Madonna numbers performed by the cast of the most talked about network series since Lost (albeit talked about by entirely different people) is a fairly safe, sometimes boring trip down memory lane. Rather than attempt to break new territory, Ryan Murphy and company play it safe by basically recreating Madonna's body of work, rather than reinventing it. However, heartfelt renditions of "Open Your Heart" and "Like A Prayer" validate the potential to one day turn the Material Mom's catalogue into a stage musical, it's the addition of a marching band that elevates the otherwise trainwreck of "4 Minutes" into the clear standout on this 'take it or leave it' collection.

Just so you all know how much I’ve been anticipating MGMT’s new release, I’m writing this as the album is downloading. So far, so good. I’ll admit it: I was a tiny bit worried. The teaser track, "Flash Delirium", wasn’t anything special. But the rest of the album is fantastically 60s pop. The hipsters have been simmering this decade for awhile now, but MGMT has brought it to a full boil. I won’t pretend to be an expert on the time period, but I’m hearing a little Beach Boys, a little Monkees, a little Simon & Garfunkel; an American Invasion, if you will. I’ve just about finished listening to the album, and I have to say my favourite tracks include "It’s Working", "Someone’s Missing", and title track, "Congratulations". While there may not be any smashing club hits on this record, with Congratulations MGMT have established themselves as a versatile band, and this will definitely be the porch party album of Summer 2010.

around town!

M

ay Day! It has been such a whirlwind of excitement that brings us Vancouverite’s to full-on Spring this fantabuliscial month of MAY! Newness is everywhere and it is time to embrace change and grow with the times of 2010! Things really kick off in a huge cultural way with two of the world’s biggest Drag Legends… Sherry Vine and Joey Arias! The two icons will perform for one night only at the all-new Five Sixty on Sunday May 2nd at 9pm. The dynamic duo bring their internationally adored show to the stage singing live, as they are “Looking Back At The Future”. The glamour keeps on pouring at the mixed hotspot as the infamous wigfest Wiggle returns to celebrate the wearable art/performance art extravaganza in its 16th Year! This pinnacle year will be a celebration of art and creativity with many of Vancities artists, stylists and designers submitting out of these world creations. The annual event will also host some of the city's top performing sensations like hostess Joan-E, Pussy Willow, Robyn Graves, Carlotta Gurl and Conni Smudge to name a few. If you're more a fan of the real girls and un-stuffed bras, then the 2010 Vancouver International Burlesque Festival, May 6-9, is for you. One of my favourite Vancouver performers, Jenny Magenta, heads up the strip-a-thon at the Rickshaw Theatre. And speaking of realness, things get very fancy at they long awaited return of The Opulence Ball at the Lotus Sound Lounge on Wednesday May 5th. Tons of decadence and glamour is in store for the vogue and costume party xtravaganza! Work it out children! xo V Check ou the all new House of Venus website www.houseofvenus.com

JOAN-E'S RAG: HERE I GO AGAIN!

O

nce more, I have embarked on "The Spring diet/good nutrition/ attempt to drop weight plan". How much weight would I like to lose you ask? The equivalent of a Peter Breeze backup dancer. I know, I know, you are saying "she's tried this before", and "this can't be good for her, all this yo-yo-ing". You might even be saying "But I like her all big, round and majestic like the Rocky Mountains (if it's the latter, then God bless ya!). What will be different this time you ask? The last time I did this was last fall. I was doing really well (even behaved for MOST of Christmas) and then an ankle injury ruined it all. I stopped doing cardio, (and yes I know I could have tried swimming but I am not going topless in any public pool in this city with all you judging bitches running amok), and then I started eating. Oh and eat I did!! I don't really need sugar or chocolate. My foods of pleasure are burgers, pizza, dumplings, hotdogs, anything Mexican, anything Ukrainian, anything Italian, deep fried chicken, and potatoes. The potatoes can be baked, fried, scalloped, totted, or even boiled!! Oh, and there needs to be melted cheese on everything (including the napkin)! Also, did anyone else find that the only thing the Olympics inspired them to do was drink, eat and sit watching the games on TV? No more! This time must be different!! Goodbye tater tot, hello chicken breast on greens!! On June 2nd, I turn forty!! There, I've said it!! Every fitness trainer, nutrition-

ist and doctor I have ever consulted has told me that I must conquer my weight battle before I enter my fourth decade or it will become near impossible. And lets face it, I want to feel and look fantastic and maybe, just maybe, buy a tank top again at Boysco instead of an "easy fit" XXXL pullover from the fat and fabulous rack at Winners. I have even given up beer so you must know that I am not messing about! When you are reading this I will be over one month into this project and hopefully will be seeing results. If I look smaller, then tell me so!! The rules are as follows: It is ALWAYS okay to tell someone that they look like they have lost weight (unless they are a Sumo wrestler or are ill). It is NEVER alright to tell someone that they look heavier unless they are recuperating or are pregnant (even then tread carefully). Oh, and if by some bad turn you see me walking up Davie Street eating a piece of pizza? Then knock it right out of my hand... and then run like hell! V For more essential gay intelligence, check out www.pinq.ca

dj mumbles There have been rumblings of DJ Mumbles for some time now but it's only recently that he seems to be everywhere - he is all over 1181 and landed himself the hottest residency at Five Sixty in the "Bathroom Bar". Mumbles is a huge music enthusiast and has been producing music and DJing for some time now, gaining skills, props and mad exposure. First DJ gig? I started developing my own sound on Sundays at 1181. My first real gig was for the Whoosh! parties up in Whistler. Favorite Gig(s)? Easily I would have to say that my favourite gigs are my two residencies. Fridays at 1181 are always packed and Saturdays at Five Sixty has a great energy. Having that room packed with people dancing and hollering is a real thrill. What kind of music do you play? I try to mix some good tried-and-true 80's/90's classics and blasts from the past with some hot, fresh electronic sub-genres that not many clubs in Vancouver are playing. Career Highlights?

38

TOP TEN

Q&A

Well I'm still relatively new at this so I'm sure my real highlights as a DJ are still to come. Rock Star moments?

Writing 'Mumbles Wuz Here' on a girl's boobies with lipstick. DJ Nightmare? The look of absolute horror and disgust on a gay boy's face when I tell him that I don't have any Britney Spears. Musical Inspirations? Calvin Harris, Chew Lips, Miike Snow, Hot Chip, Hey Champ, Monarchy, Goldfrapp, millions more. Hobbies? Well I'm also a songwriter and musician. I was doing this much more actively in my twenties, but I have been working away on a new project of all new original material which will be my first album in about 5 years. Future Plans? My plans are to keep doing exactly what I've been doing. V
