Check Yes or No Here and Now with Nina Lovel

FIVE YEARS AGO, I sustained a sports injury (see past columns for my take on sports injuries) that fostered the proliferation of some nefarious gram positive bacilli and landed me in the hospital for three weeks. Turns out I had been less than 24 hours from slipping under the grass and had my son and my bestie not noticed I was sicker than I would admit, somebody else’s face would be on this column. I realized the gravity of my condition in the moment that I was asked if I could scoot from the stretcher to the bed. Not only could I not scoot, I didn’t even care if I made the trip. I remember that moment when my life energy was at an all-time low; it changed me forever. The happy ending is that excellent care (plus more IV antibiotics than I hope all of you ever see in a lifetime) saved my life, and here I am! I was on the mend, but I guess the hospital staff enjoyed my company because they kept wanting me to stick around. For two more weeks my entertainment was provided by my laptop and the hospital’s free WiFi. My online calendar delivered a merciless stream of reminders that I was missing out on some of my favorite things in life. Three Jazz Nights, a 5K and a paddle trip flowed merrily along without me. While I knew I was in the right place and doing what it took to get better, I hated not being present at my beloved events. It all became an epiphany though, as it dawned on me just how precious our time and energy are in this life. As my strength returned, I gradually reentered the world I had left behind. That world was different, though. It was brighter, more vivid and more precious than I had ever known it to be. I turned into an emotional flake every time I stepped back into things I had always taken for granted. I teared up when I turned the key in my car, got choked up the day I walked back into work and even felt a tug of gratitude walking into the grocery store. I just about lost it the first time I got back to Jazz Night. At the time of my confinement, a downtown eatery hosted a jazz quintet every Tuesday where gifted professional musicians (one of whom I had given birth to some years earlier) played for three hours. Our families and friends gathered each week to enjoy the tunes, and I’m happy to say that the guys are still playing in Downtown Rome every week! That first night I went back, tears sprang to my eyes at the very first downbeat. Emotion welled as I realized I was hearing something I thought I would never hear again. Live jazz resonates in the deepest part of my soul, that place that nothing else can touch and is as essential as air. SUMMER 2018 GRAND

Although a kayak had been responsible for my near-fatal sports injury, I still craved to be back on the water as quickly as possible. My beloved paddling friends put together a trip and helped carry my boat (so I wouldn’t end up back in the hospital) and wow- it happened again. The moment I dipped my paddle and looked at the flowing water ahead of me, my eyes welled with tears. I had thought I would never be on the water again. That illness sharpened my sense of what I’m here for. It showed me that it really does matter what we do with the gifts of life, time, energy and talents that we’ve been given. I promised myself to never waste another moment of my life. I even figured out how to make this happen;

It’s as simple as one, two, three: 1. Know your values and passions, and 2. Say no to the things that do not feed your values and passions, and 3. Say yes to the things that do. I am a busy person. It’s intentional; it’s the life I’ve chosen. I am blessed with health and energy, and I only say yes to things I care about. Friends and family will opine that I never say no, but actually, I say that plenty of times. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have room for all these things that I love. And yes, I do know how to relax; it just doesn’t involve lying on the couch with the TV on.

Here are some of my Yes’s: 1. My children and granddaughter. Watching them thrive, living into their gifts, contributing to the world in their own ways. It thrills me to see Jessica caring for others as a nurse and being a great mommy of her own, to hear the way that music flows out of Jedd’s heart and soul and to watch Maddie grow, learn and create. 2. Rivers. If you’ve been reading Grand a while, you know this already. My leadership role with Coosa River Basin Initiative 10

GRAND SUMMER 2018

is powered by love for God’s creation and worthy of my life energy. 3. Jazz. When I served on the original Rome-Floyd 2020 committee, one goal was for Rome to have an energetic vibe, with live music at least three nights a week. Baby, just look at us now! 4. Friends. I love you all. 5. Hoops. See December Grand. And my portrait in the new FBC Church Directory. Hey, the instructions said to bring a prop that you love, so I took a hoop. So it’s in my picture. So I’m the only one in the church who followed the directions. Go ahead, roll your eyes. 6. My work. Seriously. Don’t judge me; I mean it! I get to design, build, maintain and support web apps used by everybody who works at Georgia Northwestern Technical College. I get to figure out what an app needs to do, how it will do it, and then build it from a blank screen up. It’s like working 3D puzzles all day long. I am grateful for worthy work and yes, sometimes I dream in code. Grab a piece of paper and a pen and write down some of your Yes’s and No’s (If you don’t have any, it’s time to come up with some!).

NINA LOVEL

GRAND COLUMN

Just for the record, here are some things I’ve said No to: 1. Cable TV 2. A three-year statewide volunteer position offer 3. Two committees that do not light my fire 4. A relationship that took way more from me than it gave back 5. Cutting my own grass (hey, something had to go)

Remember, every time you say No, you make room in your life for a more meaningful Yes. Where is your passion? Are you making room to nurture it? If not now, when?

COMFORCARE

Growing Gray in Georgia with ComForCare Home Care

O

NE OF THE THINGS I often get asked is, “What led you to open a home care company?” There were many different factors that went into my opening a homecare company, but one of my main thoughts at the time was the realization that my grandmother and father-in-law were both likely to need care in the coming years. My father-in-law had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease about a decade before and while at the time he was still able to be quite active, we knew that without a medical breakthrough he and my mother-in-law would need to have some help in order to stay in their home in the future. Also, my grandmother and her twin sister were both dealing with the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease. Looking back now, I remember several times where my grandmother had mentioned her appreciation for sitters. Her mother had been a nurse and she had grown up in a family that cared for other people. If someone in our family were hospitalized, my grandmother would always seem to know someone who knew someone who could be a sitter for that person if we didn’t have family that were able to stay. Shortly before my grandfather passed away from complications from cancer he told me he was concerned about my grandmother and the memory issues he was beginning to see, and asked me to look after her when he was gone. She stayed in her home for about a year after my grandfather passed before she made the decision to move into an assisted living community (this was prior to my opening ComForCare). Later she was joined by her twin sister at the same community. While my grandmother was very happy in the community, her sister was never really content. I think a big part of that was due to the fact that my grandmother made the choice to move herself, and her sister was moved in by her kids as she recovered from a fall. Eventually the community they were in opened a memory care unit and both of them ended up sharing a room again for the first time in over 80 years. The entire time my grandmother loved her living arrangements, but her sister would always have a complaint that it wasn’t her home. That experience always stuck with me and gave me an insight that I have found to be true in these past seven years that I’ve operated ComForCare Home Care. Even if someone can’t remember why they don’t

GRAND COLUMN

like something, they can still remember the feelings associated with that negative decision. Before my grandmother passed I was grateful to be able to provide her with some of my caregivers as she recovered from a hospitalization. In addition to meeting my grandmother’s physical needs such as help with toileting and transfers, her ComForCare caregiver was able to sing hymns with her, tell jokes and make a warm connection between the two of them. In the years since I started ComForCare, we have helped hundreds of clients be able to make the choice to stay independent in the place of their choosing. For most, that means providing care for them in their home. For some it’s as little as coming in three or four days a week for four or so hours to be sure that they stay clean, are getting good meals to eat, are reminded to take their medications, have some light housekeeping and laundry done or just get some help running errands. On the other end of the spectrum, we have had clients that we have been with 24/7 for years without ever missing a shift. While nothing could replace having my grandmother still alive to care for, I do get so much gratitude out of taking care of our clients because every day we get to take care of someone’s grandmother or grandfather. At ComForCare our mission to help our clients and families live their best life possible. We hold to certain unchanging core values and beliefs that drive all of our behaviors. We want to care like family. People come for the care, but they stay because we are family. We strive to serve passionately. Caregiving is a work of heart because it allows us to bring joy and compassion to those we serve. To us dignity matters. We respect and honor who our clients are, where they come from and how they want to be cared for. We are present and engaged. We show up every day ready to delight and inspire. We also want to have fun. We have fun every day by loving people and creating better days. If you or someone you know could benefit from having some help in their home, please give us a call today. We are happy to speak with you over the phone, or even come to your home for what we call a “sofa visit” where we talk with the client and their family about their unique concerns and start to craft a customized care plan to meet their needs. With ComForCare at your side, you can live your best life possible.

ROME HEALTH AND REHAB

Where Amazing Things Happen with Rome Health and Rehab

Hot Fun in the Summertime FOR MOST PEOPLE, summer is usually a time of fun, rest and relaxation. But for our seniors, the sun and blazing heat can be extremely dangerous. Our body has an internal temperature and it works every minute to maintain a normal temperature. As heat rises, so does your internal body temperature and excessive heat can force your body to work harder than normal, which is often the root cause of heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Essentially the heat forces your body to work beyond its limits, making it more complicated for seniors as our bodies are not as efficient at regulating its own temperature. Seniors do not sweat as much as they once did, which is one of the body’s most essential ways to regulate its internal temperature, and a senior’s body stores fat very differently which complicates the body’s self-regulating temperature even more. This is why heat and sun exposure can be extremely dangerous to anyone over 65 years old and is why seniors suffer more from heat strokes than younger people throughout the summer. From 1999-2009, roughly 40 percent of all heat-related deaths in the U.S were adults over 65 years old.

Stay Hydrated. Seniors are more susceptible to dehydration, and they can also become less aware of their thirst. Remember to drink water often even if not thirsty. A good rule of thumb is to drink water with every meal and one to two hours in between. Keep Your Cool. Stay cool! Even small increases in temperature can be very serious for seniors especially those with chronic medical conditions. This doesn’t mean stay locked indoors, you still need to get out and be active, but you can find alternate cool ways to get out. Shopping malls/centers, movie theaters, restaurants, museums, senior centers and libraries provide welcome, cool spaces. Bob Moore 14

GRAND COLUMN

Headache Heavy breathing or a rapid pulse Not sweating, even if it's hot out Fainting

If you or someone you know start to feel any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately and take action…get out of the heat, lie down and cool your body off with any means you have nearby…. cold bath or shower, water hose, sponge with cold water, place ice packs or cold wet towels on the body especially on the neck, head, armpits and groin area.

Exercise Smart. If you enjoy outdoor activities such as walking or gardening, make sure to wear the proper clothing and keep track of time. Don't stay out for long periods and make sure to drink even more water than usual when exercising. Also, consider outdoor exercising earlier in the morning or later in the evening when the sun is not at its peak. Wear the Right Stuff. Wear light-colored, loose fitting clothing, hats and SUNSCREEN! Sunscreen is essential for everyone; from infants to seniors, it is a must in protecting our skin from UV rays and preventing sunburn and other complications as serious as skin cancer. Many medications make one more prone to sunburn so wearing sunscreen and hats (especially those with a distant memory of a full head of hair) is even more important! Know the Risks of Hyperthermia. During the summer, be particularly cautious about abnormally high body temperatures — a condition known as hyperthermia. Heat stroke is an advanced form of hyperthermia that can be very serious, sometimes life threatening, and requires immediate medical attention. Seniors sometimes have a harder time knowing when they are dehydrated and their bodies have more difficulty regulating their temperatures and are more prone to heat stroke. Untreated heatstroke can damage your brain, heart, kidneys, and muscles. Make sure to know the warning signs and get medical attention immediately if you or anyone you know (senior or not) is experiencing these symptoms:

Stay in Touch and Meet the Neighbors. Communicate! Let friends and family know if you’ll be spending an extended period of time outdoors, even if only gardening. Do you know your neighbors? See if a younger neighbor, perhaps even one of their kids, can do yard work for you or, at least come by and check on you occasionally. If you’re a neighbor of a senior, ask what you can do to help and pay special attention to your neighbor and call immediately if you see anything out of their normal routine. For everyone involved, the extra company and friendship is just an added bonus! Know Who to Call. Prepare a list of emergency contact numbers and place them in a highly visible area (on the refrigerator, by a phone, etc.) These numbers will not only come in handy to you in an emergency situation, but also a loved one, neighbor or friend. Rome Health and Rehab has been serving and caring for the Rome and surrounding communities for nearly 50 years and is ranked a Five-Star facility by the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services. With a management team that has over a combined 150 years of service, a highly respected 24-hour skilled nursing team, a renowned physical, occupational and speech therapy services, and a physician team led by Medical Director Dr. Charles Betz with two full-time Nurse Practitioners, wound and pain management physicians, there is no doubt Rome Health and Rehab has been and will remain fully committed and dedicated in caring for our Rome community.

RENAISSANCE MARQUIS

Where the Heart Is with Renaissance Marquis

Helping Hands Dr. Jay Schecter, Medical Director of Renaissance Marquis and a neurologist at Harbin since 1988, has diagnosed and treated thousands of patients with dementia over the past 28 years. He has also had personal experiences with dementia that affected both of his parents and his mother-in-law who spent the last few years of her life at The Harbor, the 24-bed memory unit at Renaissance Marquis. Dr. Jay Schecter “There is a tremendous burden on the families of loved ones who have Alzheimer’s and other dementias,” says Dr. Schecter. “The patient usually has little to no insight that he or she has any problems with their cognitive functioning. In fact, a new neurologic sign has just been shown to be fairly specific for Alzheimer’s as opposed to other forms of dementia and this is known as the ‘head turning sign.’ This is when the patient turns his or her head to their spouse to answer the question.” Alzheimer’s dementia is the most common form of dementia, and currently affects about 48 million people worldwide and over five million Americans. Other common forms of dementia include vascular dementia, which is due to multiple strokes, Lewy body dementia and frontotemporal dementia. The diagnosis of the different forms of dementia may not be easy and often presents a diagnostic dilemma for the treating neurologist. The cause of Alzheimer’s dementia is still not known, but there are abnormal proteins that accumulate within the brain of patients with the disease, eventually causing the nerve cells in the brain to stop functioning normally. A patient with Alzheimer’s dementia progresses through several stages of the disease with initial mild forgetfulness

GRAND COLUMN

involving short-term memory. The later stages are characterized by personality changes which may include apathy, defiance, paranoia, delusions or hallucinations, difficulty with language function and problems performing daily activities such as bathing, grooming or dressing. When the person starts to become unable to care for him or herself it is much more demanding on the family. According to Dr. Schecter, this is when he discusses alternative living arrangements with the family and recommends considering either constant care from family members or assisted living or nursing home placement, depending on the individual circumstances. “Unfortunately,” says Dr. Schecter, “sometimes it is too late when the patient’s family inquires about placing their loved one in an assisted living center and it becomes more difficult to do at that point.” Dr. Schecter often tries to anticipate when the family will need help and starts the discussion at that stage of the disease. “In both my professional and personal experience, it is a very tough decision to make. But when the family does finally agree to alternative living arrangements there is a real sense of relief. When you have a caring a staff and a pleasant living environment like The Harbor at Renaissance Marquis, that decision is much easier to make,” said Dr. Schecter. “I have been so impressed with the staff at The Harbor,” says Dr. Schecter. “They really put their hearts in their work and take excellent care of the residents. It is very challenging work, as you can imagine, but it is such a relief for the families of the residents to know that they are being cared for physically, emotionally and even spiritually. My mother-in-law had moderately advanced dementia which progressed while she was at The Harbor, but she maintained her physical health, nutritional status and emotional well-being due to the caring staff.”

GRAND FEATURE s PRESTON CA SH

PRESTON CASH was born and raised in Summerville, Georgia and is a 1978 graduate of Chattooga High School. Straight out of high school, Cash signed a baseball scholarship with Shorter College, which is what would eventually bring him to Rome for over 31 years. “I played baseball with Shorter for three years, from 1979 until 1982. After my junior year of college, I was drafted by the Pulaski Braves [a minor league extension of the Atlanta Braves Organization formerly located in Pulaski, Virginia] and moved to Pulaski, Virginia where I would participate in the minor leagues until 1984,” says Cash. Although Cash loved his short stint with the Pulaski Braves, he knew Rome was where he wanted to be, and that included finishing his degree at Shorter. He graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor’s Degree in recreation management, with a certificate to teach. From there, he ventured back to Chattooga County and completed his first three years teaching at his alma mater. In 1990, Cash moved back to Rome for good, as he spent the next 28 years teaching in the Floyd County School System. He spent 10 years at Coosa Middle School, seven years at Coosa High School, and another seven years teaching at Armuchee High School before ending his career back at Coosa Middle in 2016. This career educator finally retired in 2016 from teaching, until he picked up assisting the restoration of the Trion Golf Course in Chattooga County. “I found out about the golf course after reconnecting with owner Randy Henderson. I had watched him play golf at Shorter a long time ago, so to hear from him that he was re-opening a course in Trion was astounding, and I knew then that I wanted to be a part of it,” remembers Cash. The Trion Golf Course (TGC) has been around Chattooga County since 1933, when the local cotton mill, Riegel, now Mount Vernon Mills, built the nine-hole course for its employees. Local Trion resident, Randy Henderson, bought the course out of foreclosure in May of 2015, after watching people cut hay off the course for two years.

“Although I did not start playing at the Trion Golf Course until a little bit later in my life, I have still watched it descend through several ownerships. When I was presented the opportunity to help cultivate a new beginning for this course, it was as if life had handed me a golden ticket. Every single day I am able to watch people enjoy the course that we have worked so hard for, and that is all the payment that I need… well, that and free golf, of course,” laughs Cash. Doing as the Romans do, Cash gives his all to everything that he sets out to accomplish, which hasn’t changed one bit over the years as he spends every single day, including holidays and weekends, at the Trion Golf Course.

“Preston is an incredible asset to our team. When I reached out to him, there was no hesitation in his voice, just ‘when can I start?’ We are extremely grateful for everything that he does up here, and he does it without any unwillingness, and without any pay,” says Henderson. Some of the tasks Cash fulfills on a daily basis in order to maintain the TGC are things like mowing fairways and greens, operating heavy equipment, cleaning the clubhouse and preserving anything that needs to be updated on the land. “One of my favorite things about the TGC is that it is so accommodating to the local residents here in Chattooga County. Our oldest golfer is, in fact, 93 years old. The course is not very long by most golf course standards, and it’s just a real neat nine-hole course where you can be competitive from any tee box that you hit from. I think it’s one of the hidden jewels in Northwest Georgia, as far as nine-hole courses go,” says Cash. Growing up in Chattooga County gave him the compassion to want to give back to the people he was raised around, and that did not change when he moved to Rome, as the morals are very similar in both counties. “I’ve played on many courses before,” says Cash, “but there is just something about the TGC that made me want to contribute more. This course is the only one in the surrounding county where everyone has fun while they’re here. You can see that we try to develop more of a family atmosphere here at the TGC, because it’s not all about the golf, it’s about the camaraderie.”

SENIOR LIFESTYLE

HOT WHEELS Fixing up and showing off these classic gems of history.

L

ongtime Rome native Wright Bagby and his wife of 54 years, Pat Bagby, live everything but a “simplistic” life as every year, the two set out on a road trip in one of their four atypical Austin Healey’s. As a part of the Austin Healey Club of America, the Bagbys have driven cross country to Alaska, and just this past year, traveled all the way up the West Coast, migrating back home through numerous National Parks.

AUSTIN HEALEY

“Instead of taking clothes, we have to take spare car parts just in case we need to fix something while on the road. It’s definitely an adventure, but we enjoy it completely,” says Mr. Bagby. Wright Bagby has owned an Austin Healey as long as Pat has known him; “Wright actually owned an Austin Healey when we first met in college about 51 years ago. Cultivating and refining these cars has been a growing hobby of ours, which we are fortunate enough to say that we still enjoy,” says Pat.

Austin Healey is a British made vehicle that was only in production for 14 years, from 1953 to 1967. There are around 6,000 members in the Austin Healey Club of America, including Mr. and Mrs. Bagby, who annually commemorate the production of these classic cars. Romans can be on the lookout for the Bagbys around town, as they continue to cruise up and down Broad Street in their Austin Healey’s.

OUT AND ABOUT IN ROME

Life is Grand

You have to get up early in the morning to beat these Etowah Park walkers to a workout.

Showcasing moments that make senior living in Rome delightful. Text Nina Lovel

T

hey call themselves “The Four-Mile Walking Club,” but for this group of friends who have met and walked together for years, four miles is a pretty low bar. At least five mornings a week they can be spotted along the trails, sidewalks and parking lots at Etowah Park, often accompanied by Max, a neighborhood dog that shows up for the treats that may or may not be hidden in Arch’s pocket. They climb the hill to the driving range, and then continue around the perimeter of the range field, then it’s back down the hill and around the trail again. Their dedication is clear: when

asked if they walk all year long, the answer is “yes” and when asked if they walk in the rain, the answer is “yes, unless there’s lightning.” And Etowah Park is not their only fitness venue; Ola Caldwell just completed her third Peachtree Road Race! The 4-Milers talk, laugh and share stories while keeping fit in the fresh morning air. They brighten the early mornings at Etowah Park and inspire all who meet them. There is plenty of room for others to walk at Etowah, and a group of very nice people who will welcome you there.
