Grand column
Here and Now with Nina Lovel
R
eally? Really?? REALLY??? That was going to be the name of my book, but these days I pretty much do and don’t do what I do and don’t want to do, and I don’t want to write any more books. Used copies of my first volume, Nadine Says: You’re Over the Hill, Honey! are commanding $4.95 on Amazon, and it doesn’t get much better than that. When Oliver called to ask if I would consider writing a column for a new V3 publication for Active Senior Adults, my first reaction was, “Really? Why me? I’m active, for sure, but this senior adult thing, I’m not that. What makes Oliver think I could write anything meaningful for active senior adults?” Then it hit me: those nice, bright young people at V3 must think I AM one of those… REALLY? I love Oliver. He is one of my son’s dearest friends who sealed the bro-friend pact last year by standing in for said son and driving me 125 miles to retrieve my truck. I owe him bigtime and could never tell him no, so I said yes and here we go! First, let’s tease a few things apart. I’m thinking the magazine was originally targeted to “active senior citizens” and Oliver changed “citizens” to “adults” just to get me to say yes and write the quarterly column. What is a senior adult, anyway? Is it someone over 40 years old? 50? 60? 85?
Hard to say, since age can be a number, or age can be a mindset, or age can even time-bend, as in “60 is the new 40” (which makes me only 43, so once again, why me?) Let’s just say that a senior adult is one who is lucky enough to have survived the career-climbing and child-rearing years with (hopefully) enough energy left to enjoy and contribute for years to come. On to “active”. Now, this is a seriously broad term. Are you active if you walk a mile every day? Three? Ten? What if you ski in Colorado several times a year, or take those week-long road bike odysseys? (Definitely yes to these.) What if you’re nursing an injury, or managing a chronic illness—could that be being active? I think so, as long as you are doing everything in your power to make the most of what you have in life to live. Does babysitting your grandchildren three days a week make you active? (Whoa! absolutely! That’s an energy-burner if ever there was one, and what a blessing as well!) Is an active senior adult someone who is retired and has the time and resources to visit big cities and see great shows, or is it someone who so loves her work that she has no desire to retire? All of these answers are, “Yes!” An active senior adult is one who realizes that the third trimester of life can, on many levels, be the best one yet and is determined to make it so! grand | 9
Grand column If Oliver can change “senior citizens” to “senior adults”, I’ll take license myself to change it again, to “grown-ups”. It is great to be a grown-up! We are finally at that stage of life where we’re no longer focused on careers, children are either in college (stressful but has an end in sight) or grown and out on their own (for the most part anyway), and for the first time in many years we’re not obligated to all that much. Describe it as you will; being a grown-up adds up to More. Time. For. Ourselves…Really! Way back when I was 57 year old, I had stopped playing tennis due to a shoulder injury. I got so, um, “curvy” (okay, fat) and out of shape that the day I got winded carrying my one year old granddaughter Maddie across the room I had an epiphany: Unless I made some serious changes towards being healthy, I might not live to see her get married. Or even start pre-school. It was that bad, really. So I put Couch to 5K on my iPhone and joined dear friends Denise and Denise for the 2010 Gary Tillman Clocktower 5K. When I told people I had just run my first 5K, some would politely say, “Really?” (As in, “That’s nice, now can we talk about something interesting to the rest of us?”) Next, I entered a contest and was selected for the 2011 CNN Fit Nation triathlon team. My friends said “Really???” (As in, “We always thought you were crazy; now you’ve removed all doubt!”) New acquaintances said, “Really???” (As in, “You’re nuts and I don’t want to be near you right now; it might rub off on me.”) Then I trained hard, swam a mile in the Hudson River, rode my bike 28 miles on the NYC Upper West Side Highway, ran a 10K through Central Park, and embraced my two children and 11 dear friends who greeted me at the finish line. At 58 years old I was healthier than I had been in my whole life. I was also famous, but just for a minute. Because CNN had shared my team’s journey on the Sanjay Gupta MD show and posted our blogs on cnn.com/health, complete strangers came up to me in NYC and said, “You’re Nina! I’ve been following you online and you’ve inspired me! Good luck!” My turn: REALLY? The best “Reallys” of all came after I finished the tri. They sounded like this: “REALLY??!!??” With these you could see big bright thought balloons as plain as day that said, “Wow, if chunky old elderly Nina can do all that, maybe I need to get moving myself!” Today I see friends every week who jumped off the couch and got into shape because (they say anyway) I inspired them to do so. It warms my heart to no end. My goal for this column is to inspire and encourage you to go find some “Really-Really-Reallys” of your own. Do something you’ve always wanted to do and never made time for. Do it even if it scares you a little bit.
10 | grand
Make room for it by getting your life in order first: file your will and advance directives, put your meds on auto-refill, your bills on auto-pay and tidy up your house. Trust me, your kids do not want to go through all that stuff. Get moving with a lifetime sport (swimming, biking, walking), or fall in love with our rivers from a kayak-on-the-water point of view. No desire to move that much? Our communities are rich with talent; show up for music, art and theatrical performances. Get to know the artists and support them. Take a class; opportunities are everywhere! Volunteer: you have a lifetime of experience to share! Go somewhere you’ve never been and take somebody with you. Hang glide, zip-line… whatever bends your mind. I’m not saying be reckless. Our bodies have some wear and tear, but I swear to you, those aches and pains lessen when you move around. Stave off injuries by gradually increasing activity and then hope that if you ever do get an injury it’s while doing something fun. That way, it becomes a Sports Injury. Sports Injuries are cooler than old-age-out-of-shape injuries. Google your past. You won’t believe the memories that will bubble up. Be open to re-connecting if there’s room in your life for that. Be adventurous and mischievous; it’s not like something you do at this point will affect your career, right? (Caveat: be prudent online so you don’t embarrass the grandkids. Wait, on second thought, post whatever you want and give them something to worry about!) Fellow Grown-Ups, I challenge you to go find your own “Really-Really-Reallys.” These can be the best years of our lives… Wait for it…REALLY!!! Tell me about your “Reallys”: ninalovel@gmail.com

A Peace of Mind with Lee Treadaway
M
y name is Lee Treadaway, and as an Elder Law attorney, I am very happy to bring relevant legal topics and information to Northwest Georgia’s senior population and their families. There are a myriad of legal issues that are of particular concern to seniors and I hope that I can give you helpful information each quarter that you can use. A little about me‌ I am a life-long resident of Floyd County. I grew up in the Sherwood Forest subdivision and attended Model High School. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia in 1991 and my law degree from the Cumberland School of Law, Samford University. I am married to Kristy Cordle Treadaway and we have four children, ranging in ages from 14 months to eight years old. My parents, also life-long residents of Floyd County, are now 72 and 75 years old, so issues facing those who are aging are important to me personally and impact my family as well. After finishing law school in 2004, I began my law practice here in Rome with Fuller & McKay, PC. I spent about a year in general practice followed by several years of consumer bankruptcy practice with Fuller & McKay. In 2011, I left Fuller & McKay and joined Smith, Lewis & Haley, LLP, later to become Smith, Treadaway and Joffe, LLP. My practice was primarily in estate planning, probate, adult guardianships and the like. Over the last three years or so, I have focused my practice in the area of Elder Law. As of January of this year, I am also a solo practitioner. I am a member 12 | grand
of Elder Counsel and the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys, both national organizations made up of attorneys who practice in Elder Law and special needs law. So, what is Elder Law? Elder Law attorneys specialize in areas that are of particular concern to older clients, people with disabilities and their families. Traditional estate planning has focused primarily on what happens to our assets when we die. Estate planning is certainly a large part of what we do, but Elder Law covers much more. Elder Law attorneys first try to understand your values and concerns. We look for ways to use your assets for the purpose of preserving your dignity, quality of life and independence as you age. We help people plan in advance for a potential long-term health issues that might hinder their ability to manage their own care and affairs, and we help to make sure their wishes are followed as closely as possible. We assist clients in planning now so that they may qualify for public benefits without first becoming impoverished, should they ever need long-term care in a nursing facility. We assist families who care for loved ones with special needs with care planning. One of the most important things an Elder Law attorney can do is help clients and their families who are already facing a healthcare crisis and are looking at the possibility of a nursing home or other long term care situation.
Common Questions • I f I ever have to go in a nursing home, will I have to spend everything I have? Will they take my house and who are “they” anyway? • H ow can I preserve an inheritance for my children if I should have a long-term illness? • M om or Dad can no longer manage their own healthcare and finances. What do we do? • I am a veteran that served during a war-time period. Is there assistance available to me if I need additional help at home or need to go to assisted living?
A qualified Elder Law attorney can help you with these questions and many more. If you think you need help concerning problems in any of these areas, make sure you seek an attorney who specializes in Elder Law. I am happy to consult with any of my neighbors and friends, or their families, about any questions they may have. Please feel free to contact my office directly at any time.
Contact LEE TREADAWAY by calling 706-291-0040 or visit his office at 901 North Broad Street Suite 350, Rome for a consultation. Also find him on Facebook at “Law Office of H. Lee Treadaway”
• I have a child with special needs. How can I use my assets to help my child without stopping important healthcare benefits my child is entitled to? How can I protect my special needs loved one after I am gone? grand | 13

Where the Heart Is with Renaissance Marquis
I
t’s never too early to choose an assisted living facility and finding the right one for you takes time and effort. There are a lot of options, but the most important factor is a staff and community who make you feel at home. In most cases, seniors making this transition are leaving behind their family home. While losing the burdens that come with maintaining that home may be a welcome change, it is hard to pack away the memories built over the course of a lifetime. That is why it is imperative that you select a place where new friends and memories can carry you into the future. Renaissance Marquis specializes in making this move an anticipation of what is to come and not a longing for the past. In order to help you on this journey we have provided the top five reasons to choose assisted living sooner than later. First, getting established in a community can make a world of difference. Waiting until the burden of maintaining a home becomes too much can lead to financial loss, increased health issues and unnecessary stress for both you and your family members. Independent or assisted living facilities are designed to serve seniors who require extra care, as well as, those who are still completely independent. By finding the right facility at a younger age, you can form long-lasting friendships, and spend time with family and friends instead of worrying about the day-to-day chores that come with owning a home. Next, daily fitness and physical therapy are important components in keeping bothersome aches and pains at bay. Exercise is vital for a healthy lifestyle, and for those who require physical therapy, receiving it in the comfort of your home setting is an excellent option that most assisted living facilities provide. The opportunities for an active lifestyle are far greater for seniors in this setting as activity coordinators 14 | grand
provide a wide variety of things to keep residents on the go. From yoga to gardening, there is always something to do and people to share those experiences with. One of the most important aspects of a senior community is the security provided by professionals, 24 hours a day. In many cases, seniors making this transition already require in-home care of some sort. These services - along with home improvement costs - can be extremely expensive. One of the biggest rewards of choosing a senior living facility is the peaceof-mind that comes with the safety and security. You will have all the needed amenities to make your way around the property and staff members are always on hand to help those in need. Furthermore, the peace-of-mind your family members will have is invaluable during an often vulnerable time in life. Fourth on the list is a benefit that everyone can appreciate. Worry-free living is the best way to spend your most exciting years, so live it up. Cooking, cleaning and yard work are gone. At this stage in your life you have worked hard enough. It’s time to enjoy yourself. By eliminating the stress associated with planning meals and house cleaning, you are free to concentrate on the hobbies, activities and people that bring joy to your life. Last, but certainly not least, is the ability to maintain proper nutrition and daily social interaction. Supervising and maintaining a healthy diet and social schedule can be hard for seniors living at home. In fact, many seniors suffer from malnutrition, causing their health and well-being to decline, despite family members trying their best to keep them healthy. In the right facility seniors are served three meals a day that are tailored to their medical needs, ensuring that they get the vitamins and nutrients necessary for them to maintain a healthy diet. Loneliness and isolation are detrimental to efforts in decreasing depression, and assisted living allows seniors to
become part of a community with endless opportunities to interact, engage and enjoy the golden years with other seniors. Peace of mind, security, living well, social interaction and a healthy lifestyle are some of the benefits you will find when choosing to join a senior living community. Thinking about the future can be hard. At Renaissance Marquis, we understand the pressures associated with taking such a large step and we are prepared to make the transition as seamless as possible. Being ready is essential in ensuring your retirement is full of new things to appreciate. When it’s time to decide, we’d love to help.
Visit renaissancemarquis.com or drop by the facility at 3126 Cedartown Hwy. SW, Rome. Or, call ahead for an appointment at 706-295-0014.

We Are Rome Charles Parker A Senior Profile by Corinna Underwood

18 | grand
W
hen it comes to improvements in the Rome over the past 40 years, resident Charles Parker has not only seen plenty, he has also assisted in creating the infrastructure we see today. In his role as County Commissioner for three consecutive terms beginning in 1980, Parker has participated in community improvements as wide-ranging as the building of a bridge over the railroad tracks at Redmond Circle, to construction of the first of two bridges across the Coosa River. Parker has also seen the addition of a number of fire stations and community recreation parks. Being focused on the safety of his family and friends, he was also committed to ensuring that the Floyd County Police and Sheriff’s departments were adequately funded, and were able to secure the equipment needed to operate. Parker was also part of the Floyd County Commission who started the Fund Balance; this program has saved Floyd County millions of dollars over the years without having to pay interest on tax anticipation notes. One of Parker’s favorite community roles was as chairman of the Rome/Floyd County Bicentennial Constitution Celebration Committee. In 1976, Romans joined Americans throughout the country in the celebration of the nation’s 200th birthday. “Myself, along with the committee, worked on compiling a lot of information regarding that project,” Parker recalls. “We had a parade down Broad Street. We asked all the elected officials to come for the parade wearing sashes across their chests saying they were a judge or a commissioner, or whatever position they held. We had scout troops march alongside 13 floats representing the 13 original colonies. We were able to obtain flags from each of the original colonies, like New York and Connecticut, by writing letters to each state; they sent us the flags we used in the parade. As a remembrance of this great celebration of American history, those flags are on display at our library.” During his time serving as a member of the Floyd County Commission, Parker was part of the committee who oversaw the building of the Sara Hightower Library, that found a home on Riverside Parkway. Set on the banks of the Oostanaula River, the new library replaced the Carnegie Library in 1988 and was named after Sara Hightower, one of the most influential librarians in Rome’s history. Another project that Parker was involved in during his terms in office was the creation of Rome’s 34,300- square-foot Forum. “We built the Forum with money that was in the 1988 SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax),” he says.
grand | 19
A dedicated and public-spirited gentleman, Parker was also a trustee of the Hospital Authority of Floyd County from 19811990. “We completely remodeled the Emergency Care Center, and added a couple of stories on the corner down by Turner McCall Boulevard. The county also provided $50,000 for the development of a new morgue at Floyd Medical Center.” Parker is a soft-spoken gentleman who smiles with pride when he talks about how everyone in Rome’s community pulled together when it came to developing and furnishing the Etowah Senior Center, which was renamed the Charles C. Parker Center for Active Adults. “The senior center was built 30 years ago, in 1986. The very first day we started on the project, I drove out there and they were piling dirt to raise the floor because the sewer line was five feet higher than the floor level. The contractor said they were going to have to raise the floor.” Charles explains. He was adamant about this not happening because it was a senior facility and they didn’t want to have steps leading into the building. When Charles asked the contractor for an alternative solution he was told they would need a sewer lift station. “Back in those days there was a company…called Battey Machinery and I knew one of the owners, Mr. Cummings,” he continues. “I called him and asked him how we could go about getting a sewer lift station. We talked about it for a little while and he decided to help us make the request a reality. During the course of the conversation, he asked if we needed a hot water heater, too. So, that started the generous hands that all of our partners had in making the senior center great.” Parker also tells of how many other Roman companies stepped up to help. Frank Barron donated the Coca-Cola lights over the pool table and others donated lumber, kitchen appliances, a television and furniture for the senior center. Martha Fricks volunteered to help with the interior decorations and Mrs. Ayers at First Baptist Church helped design the kitchen layout. One of Parker’s greatest pleasures is to go to the center on Wednesday and see over 100 people enjoying the music, playing guitars, singing and dancing. “I am, and have been, totally blessed to be there and join in with the group. I am proud to have been a part of this senior center,” says Parker. He continues to be an active supporter of the senior center and is a member of the Georgia Mountain Music Club, which meets there every Wednesday. After the meeting is done, they all sing “Amazing Grace”, a true testament to the citizenship he has shown the Roman community over the years.

In his leisure time he enjoys camping as a life member of the Good Sam’s Club. Golf and photography are also ways in which he likes to unwind and reflect on his time in Rome. A keen enthusiast of boating, Parker was also a past Commander of the Rome Power Squadron, during which time he made many trips on the Tennessee River. He is also past president of the Rome Chapter of the Sons of American Revolution, a Kentucky Colonel, and a former member of the 4th Rifle Co. of the USMCR in Rome, Ga.
in 2009 and has been deemed “Realtor Emeritus” by the National Association of Realtors.
Parker also proposed tearing down the terminal building at the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport. “We were able to build a new terminal building replacing the very old building of the past, equipped with—at that time—the latest technology and a lounge for the pilots to relax as they were waiting on their next flight,” he explains.
You can find the Charles C. Parker Center at 1325 Kingston Hwy, Rome, GA 30161. Ongoing activities include 60 and over softball, art classes, dance classes, karaoke, gospel singing and line dancing. A more recent addition to the program is the Silver Sneakers Fitness Classes, which are designed especially for adults aged 55 and over. Classes run on Monday from 9-10 a.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:15-10:15 a.m. The fitness groups are free for Silver Sneakers Fitness members and $2 for nonmembers, though many health insurance plans cover the cost. For more information contact Program Coordinator Tammy Bryant at 706-234-0383 or bryantt@floydcountyga.org.
Among his many other accomplishments, Parker has been an associate broker with Hardy Realty since 1993. He specializes in the commercial field, selling convenience stores, hotels and commercial properties. He was instrumental in bringing Sonny’s BBQ to Rome. The Shorter College Alumna has served as President of the Rome Board of Realtors since 1964. He was elected to the Hall of Fame of the Greater Rome Board of Realtors
