Here & Now with Nina Lovel

So what is this single quote, one that is bathed in debate and scrutiny, doing in my Grand Magazine column? Well, the succinctness of “Plastics” has always intrigued me, and I sometimes amuse myself by defining one-word “amazements” in my own little world. I’ve said this before; I’m a nerd. If you can live with that, read on and I’ll share some things with you.

No Time Like Now

“Plastics” One, two, three, GO! Five seconds: name the year, name the movie, and name the star, the plot and the screenwriter (hint: there’s a Rome connection there!) If you can’t guess where this single word, quoted from an iconic movie released in the late sixties, was taken from, then here is your cheat sheet. 1967, “The Graduate”, Dustin Hoffman (Benjamin Craddock) was seduced by his true love’s mother but innocence, righteousness and young love ultimately prevailed. To this day I’m not sure why my parents let me go see it; I wasn’t even old enough to drive, but I haven’t won any “social awareness awards” in my life and it wasn’t until the seventies that I actually caught on to the story. I did love the soundtrack, though; Simon and Garfunkel totally rocked it. Perhaps our parents just wanted us to appreciate the talent of Rome’s native son Calder Willingham, who wrote the screenplay. In an early scene of the movie, at a party celebrating Ben’s graduation, neighbor Mr. McGuire gave that one word of advice to Ben, “plastics”, and it’s never mentioned again. While the meaning of the quote is widely debated online (I did not invest much energy in that research), I’ve always thought it to be career advice, an attempt to herald the next big growth industry in America.

The Good Old Days are gone. Good! To me, the best thing about the “Good Old Days” is that I survived them to get to now. I was born to live today! I am not trying to escape any bad memories of childhood; I grew up safe and loved as an adopted only child, moderately spoiled. Other than concern that we didn’t have a bomb shelter in the back yard, my childhood memories are happy ones. Memorable moments include those early summer days when I finally convinced my mother the ground was warm enough to go barefooted, and growing up in Maplewood with all-day summer bike rides with friends (but wait, I still do that). We built forts in the woods and gullies that now lie beneath Maplewood Village. We safely drifted among our homes, garnering snacks and drinks of water, and as soon as Brooke’s mom rang the dinner bell we all scattered home to our own parents and dinners. We never felt unsafe and fortunately, we never were. That’s all nice. Thanks for the memories, but enough of the Good Old Days. While I remain grateful that mine really were good and I wish the same for every child ever born, I was born to live TODAY! Here are a few of my one-word enigmas that explain why. “Adhesives” When I mention to friends how great today’s adhesives are, they say, “What?” Then they begin to plan for my long term care. They should be used to my nerdiness by now, but between you and me, I think they’re becoming forgetful. Stay with me here, I’m talking way beyond the coolness of Post-It Notes. They are so 20th century. I’m talking about contact paper. For integrity of source, I googled “inventor of contact paper” and besides a brand grand | 9

GRAND COLUMN named “Con-Tact Brand”, all results were either ads for a generic sticky-backed contact paper or blogs seeking to revile the paternity of the early stuff with the brand name. So I’m calling it contact paper here, and you know what I’m talking about. Might you have, way back in the ’60s or ’70s, sought to refresh your shelves with a layer of bright yellow and orange contact paper? If so, you may have sworn that it would be the first and last time you did so. Sworn is the key word here. I’m pretty sure that the most colorful aspects of my vocabulary may be traced to that first contact paper experience, updating a metal cabinet from my childhood home to adorn my first on-my-own apartment. If laying it down wasn’t enough to try your soul, removing the stuff two years later was…well…sorry, but I can’t bear to relive the day. Today I have renewed reason to be brave. I have learned that 21st century contact paper will actually stick to, and also let go of, itself if accidentally wrinkled while being laid on a shelf. Not only that, but it will even let go of the shelf itself a year later! I can get a roller with repositionable tacky stuff that is not only useful, it’s fun and forgives my scrapbooking mistakes, and I can get glue so strong that the label warnings outnumber the instructions. And it sticks anything to anything. For good. Ahhh, 2016 adhesives, I love you! I was born to live today. “Paint” I’ve always been a DIY girl, and that includes painting (of the walls, floors and doors variety). When in my pre-teens, my parents indulged my desire to change the colors in our Lake Allatoona cabin. I remember the trendy dark green that the walls became, but more than that I remember the cleanup involving dark green paint in endless jars of mineral spirits poured from a big glass jug. I remember the fumes, my green-stained hands and the way the brushes never were the same no matter what I did to clean them. While history states that latex paint was invented in the 1940s and in wide use by 1960, it took a lot longer to get to Lake Allatoona. And that was the early phase of paint hassle. Fast forward to young adulthood in the’70s, ambitious apartment and older-home-painting projects. Yes, latex paint was available by then. But the new challenge became getting it to stick to what were inevitably old layers of oil-based paint. Call me a slow learner, but I tried and failed at that more times than I care to admit. Welcome, sweet 21st century! Finally, someone else has dealt with the what-kind-of-paint-should-I-use-over-theother-paint issues in my house, releasing me to delight in the meditative task of changing my room colors whenever I want to. It’s so easy! I can paint any room in my house in 10 | grand

less than a day (and trust me, this happens regularly). To add to the amazement, some of those paints that claim to contain primer and cover in one coat, actually DO! I was born to paint TODAY! Quickly, “Weather.” Here’s all I have to say about the weather. While it was exciting to wake up to surprise snowfall in the Good Old Days, it is so much cooler to see the stuff roll in on real-time radar, and my watch tells me when it’s going to rain. I’ve got the weather forecast on my wrist. Can’t beat that with a stick. I was born to get the weather TODAY! Last, but totally not least, “Music.” I’ve always loved it. At twelve, I was obsessed with Herman’s Hermits. I listened to “I’m Henry VIII, I Am” incessantly on our honkin’ big living room console that had a record player and a radio that didn’t actually receive any stations. It’s a testimony to survival that my father sat calmly and read the paper every evening while I played that 45 rpm record over and over and over, and I mean for weeks on end. I’ll never know how he had the patience to not throttle me; maybe he figured that since he and my mom had voluntarily adopted me at birth they were obligated to at least let me survive to my teens. By high school I had acquired a small portable record player with which I retreated to my room with The Beatles, The Platters, The Stones, The Doors, The Temptations, Otis Redding, Percy Sledge… (Okay enough, you know what I’m talking about). I was so happy with that little record player that the (lack of) sound quality didn’t bother me a bit, and I’m sure my mom and dad were thrilled to get their living room back. Today is just a music fest all day long. I get to listen to practically any song ever recorded, anytime, anywhere. My Napster subscription feeds me music to write code by at work and music to run, walk, hula hoop, and paint by while at play. The quality is always better than that plastic portable player, but I love them both the same. Most of all, though, my heart rejoices over all the reallife live music talent we now enjoy throughout Northwest Georgia. On any given night, chords drift from various Broad Street venues, and the music doesn’t stop at the county line; it’s everywhere. In the Good Old Days, you didn’t have this; we had to grow into it, and I’m so glad we did. I was born to love music TODAY! Adhesives, paint, weather, music… these are just some of mine. Planning Makes Perfect

Last will and Testament A will provides specific instructions for distributing your real estate, money and any other assets to family members or other beneficiaries you have chosen upon your death. Without a will or other documents, such as a trust to direct where your assets go, state law will determine who will inherit your estate. An attorney can customize a will to fit your needs, including naming guardians for minor children and creating trusts after you pass for beneficiaries who may need special protections. Examples of these particular 12 | grand

family members are minor children and relatives with special needs. When drafting your will, you appoint a personal representative. This person will be named your executor. The executor’s job is to probate the will. To probate a will is simply to prove the genuineness of the will. The duties of your executor are also to administer your estate by paying final expenses, any taxes that might be owed, creditors of the estate and distributing assets to your beneficiaries. A will must be filed in probate court following your death. Probate is the court procedure by which a will is proved to be the last will and testament of a decedent and it also generally refers to the legal process of administering a decedant’s estate. There are some special considerations that older clients need to keep in mind when making or updating a will. Let’s look at an example. Suppose John and Mary Smith, 81 and 80 years old, need a will. John is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. First of all, Mary probably does not want to appoint John as executor of her will. It is also a good idea to go ahead and transfer all assets to Mary’s name alone. In her will, Mary likely will not want to leave assets to John in the event that she dies before he does. John will need to qualify for Medicaid if he needs nursing home care and leave the assets to a trusted child or children. There are many other considerations that need to be addressed, and every situation and estate plan is different depending on your wishes, health, spouse’s help and the amount and type of assets you have.

GRAND COLUMN

Durable Power of Attorney Everyone, young or old, sick or healthy, needs a comprehensive and effective power of attorney document. A power of attorney is a document that will allow you to appoint someone called an agent to make decisions and manage affairs should you become incapacitated and unable to manage your own affairs. A durable power of attorney, continues to be effective if you become incapacitated through illness, accident or any other reason. All powers of attorney cease at the death of the grantor. It is common for someone to appoint a spouse or trusted adult child as an agent under a power of attorney but it can be anyone you choose. Keep in mind that you will be entrusting this person with managing personal and financial affairs for you should you become unable to do so. There are several things I believe everyone should have in their power of attorney document, but that can be especially important for older clients. In our example above, John may want to appoint Mary as his agent under his power of attorney with a trusted child or other person as a successor agent. However, due to John’s health, Mary would not want to appoint John. Most power of attorney documents we see in my office, whether they were prepared by an attorney or not, simply do not grant the agent adequate powers that may be needed. The agent should specifically be allowed to make gifts of the principle’s assets, including gifts to the agent if the agent is the principle’s spouse, and allow the agent to purchase, sell, or give away real estate. These powers are important planning techniques for asset protection for Medicaid and V.A. benefits. The power of attorney document also should allow the agent to create trusts on behalf of the principle, which can also be vitally important if the agent needs to qualify for Medicaid or V.A. benefits for long-term care. Most power of attorney documents I see will allow an agent to put a principle’s assets in an already existing trust but do not grant the agent authority to create a new trust, which can result in an inability to do effective planning for long-term care. Advance Healthcare Directive An advance healthcare directive, often referred to as a living will or a medical power of attorney, allows your agent to speak for you about medical decisions if you are unable to speak. The advance healthcare directive also allows you to make your wishes known ahead of time about life sustaining measures such as feeding tubes, ventilators and other life support, in the event that you have a terminal condition. Without a healthcare directive, medical personnel will do

everything within reason to sustain your life, whether or not recovery is likely. Trusts In my opinion, trusts are a very under-utilized estate planning tool for seniors. A trust can offer many advantages that a will alone cannot. There are many types of trusts used to accomplish different goals but all trusts created during the trust maker’s lifetime fall into two primary categories: revocable living trusts and irrevocable trusts. A revocable living trust allows you to transfer assets to the trust and maintain use and control of those assets. If you become incapacitated, there are provisions in the trust that allow your successor trustee to continue management of your affairs during your incapacity. You can provide for continued management of your assets after your death, even for generations to come, for the benefit of the people you choose. The assets in the trust avoid probate and the trust is not part of public record. An irrevocable trust is a very important planning tool that we use to protect assets in the event that you develop a long-term illness such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, a stroke, etc. and requires nursing home care. By pre-planning with a properly drafted irrevocable trust, any trust assets that were transferred to the trust, at least 60 months before the need for government benefits to pay for nursing home care arises, will not be counted as your assets and will not be available to the State for estate recovery upon your death. The key is to plan early. The goal is to place assets into a properly drafted irrevocable trust which minimizes loss of control of your assets while maximizing future eligibility for Medicaid and Veteran’s benefits should the need for long-term care arise. With careful planning and professional guidance, you are limiting the erosion of your estate’s assets, safeguarding them for you and your spouse’s future needs, and providing an inheritance for your beneficiaries.

Where The Heart Is with Renaissance Marquis

Helping Hands “There is a tremendous burden on the families of loved ones who have Alzheimer’s and other dementias,” says Dr. Jay Schecter. “The patient usually has little to no insight that he or she has any problems with their cognitive functioning. In fact, a new neurologic sign has just been shown to be fairly specific for Alzheimer’s as opposed to other forms of dementia and this is known as the ‘head turning sign.’ This is when the patient turns his or her head to their spouse to answer the question.” Dr. Schecter, Medical Director of Renaissance Marquis and a neurologist at Harbin since 1988, has diagnosed and treated thousands of patients with dementia over the past 28 years. He has also had personal experiences with dementia that affected both of his parents and his mother-in-law who 14 | grand

spent the last few years of her life at The Harbor, the 24 bed memory unit at the Renaissance Marquis. “I have been so impressed with the staff at The Harbor,” says Dr. Schecter. “They really put their hearts in their work and take excellent care of the residents. It is very challenging work, as you can imagine, but it is such a relief for the families of the residents to know that they are being cared for physically, emotionally and even spiritually. My mother-in-law had moderately advanced dementia which progressed while she was at The Harbor, but she maintained her physical health, nutritional status and emotional well being due to the caring staff.” Alzheimer’s dementia is the most common form of dementia, and currently affects about 48 million people worldwide and over 5 million Americans. Other common forms of dementia include vascular dementia, which is due to multiple strokes, Lewy body dementia and frontotemporal dementia. The diagnosis of the different forms of dementia may not be easy and often presents a diagnostic dilemma for the treating neurologist. The cause of Alzheimer’s dementia is still not known, but there are abnormal proteins that

GRAND COLUMN accumulate within the brain of patients with the disease, eventually causing the nerve cells in the brain to stop functioning normally. A patient with Alzheimer’s dementia progresses through several stages of the disease with initial mild forgetfulness involving short-term memory. The later stages are characterized by personality changes which may include apathy, defiance, paranoia, delusions or hallucinations, difficulty with language function and problems performing daily activities such as bathing, grooming, or dressing. When the person starts to become unable to care for him or herself it is much more demanding on the family. According to Dr. Schecter, this is when he discusses alternative living arrangements with the family and recommends considering either constant care from family members or assisted living or nursing home placement, depending on the individual circumstances. “Unfortunately,” Dr. Schecter states, “sometimes it is too late when the patient’s family inquires about placing their loved one in an assisted living center and it becomes more difficult to do at that point.”

Dr. Schecter often tries to anticipate when the family will need help and starts the discussion at that stage of the disease. “In both my professional and personal experience, it is a very tough decision to make. But when the family does finally agree to alternative living arrangements there is a real sense of relief. When you have as caring a staff and pleasant a living environment like The Harbor at Renaissance Marquis, that decision is much easier to make.”

Gordon Haney GOING FOR

GOLD by Corinna Underwood

M

ajor League Baseball pitcher Warren Spahn once said: “hitting is timing. Pitching is upsetting timing.” That’s nothing new to veteran softball pitcher Gordon Haney, who has upset plenty of hitters during his time. The 91-year-old Coosa resident has been involved in Senior League softball hosted by the Rome Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority for 26 years, though he first began playing in the early 60s. Nowadays, he pitches for Rome’s Right at Home senior team and he has been voted MVP nine times. Gordon enjoys sharing one of his favorite softball moments. “I’d developed a curve ball. We went down to Marietta and were playing in a tournament down there and the wind blew the ball right. I curved it and it really curved. A bunch of people sitting in the stands behind home plate

said, ‘did you see that?’ When I came off the field someone asked, ‘how do you do that?’ I said, ‘trade secret.’” Softball prowess is far from Gordon’s only sporting accomplishment. In 2003 he began playing shuffleboard. Prior to that time he’d never even seen the game. One day, in a small town just outside Warner Robins while playing horseshoes, he spotted a shuffleboard court. Two men were already setting up at one end, so Gordon jumped in with his friend Dalton to play them. After watching their opponents for some time, Gordon noticed that after each shot, they would switch sides of the table. “I said ‘they’re changing sides,’ and Dalton said, ‘well, we can do that,’ and he got over on his side to do it the same way. We came very close to beating them.” Deciding to take a new challenge the following year, Gordon competed again and won the gold medal. Since

“I got healed from that. The older I get, the better my health is."

then, he has competed across the nation from Florida to Vermont, and North Carolina to Michigan, winning many shuffleboard medals along the way. The Georgia Golden Olympics (GGO) is an annual statewide event held in Warner Robins. Each year, hundreds of Georgians over 50 meet to participate in the amateur sports competition, make new friends and share fun times. Gordon has been competing since 2003 and has championed the fields of horseshoes, billiards, shuffleboard and table tennis. To date, he has accrued more than 50 gold medals at the GGO. During his younger years, life threw Gordon plenty of curveballs in the form of life-threatening illnesses. He joined the military in 1943, and while stationed in New Guinea he was bitten by a bug which infected him with scrub typhus. “It works on the nervous system like a coral snake bite. I came out of the jungle, went into the hospital, and I went out of my head while I was there. I don’t know how long I was out,” says Gordon. In spite of having only a 50 percent chance of surviving, Gordon made it through. During the rest of his time in the army, he also contracted

malaria three times. After arriving back on home soil, the young soldier was keen to return to the military, but his doctor told him he would not be able to, due to the fact that he was suffering from advanced tuberculosis. After being hospitalized for 16 months, Gordon finally recovered. “I got healed from that. The older I get the better my health is,” he says with a smile. No longer able to do the manual work he had so long been used to, Gordon spent 13 months studying at Carroll Lynn Business College, on Broad Street. Upon graduating, he began working at Horton Hardware and Stock on Shorter Avenue, and worked there for 62 years, until his recent retirement. Gordon is still going strong, playing the sports he loves and being an active member of Rome’s Charles C. Parker Senior Center. He remains an inspiration to seniors and young people alike.

CALENDAR | PICKLEBALL

A Pick-up Pickleball Game

With a peculiar name like pickleball, some may find it surprising that the sport has garnered such a large following locally, but the sport that combines tennis, badminton and ping pong is actually one of the fastest growing sports nationwide. Pickleball is a favorite among seniors seeking to partake in a fun, active sport that’s easier on the knees and joints than tennis. It’s easy to learn even without prior experience in sports, and is a delightfully addictive game. In Floyd County, pickleball is played weekly at both the Gilbreath and Thornton Recreation Centers. Played with a paddle smaller than a tennis racquet, but larger than a ping-pong paddle, a convenience of the sport is that rather than needing a special court, pickleball can be played on altered indoor or outdoor tennis and badminton courts.

!

Benefits of pickleball extend to its inexpensive nature and the ease of exercise without straining muscles or having to run across the court as much as other sports. Seniors who have heart complications or joint replacements are encouraged to maintain an active lifestyle by playing this non-competitive sport.

CALENDAR | RESOURCES

Resources: The Community Incontinence Closet What is the closet? The community incontinence closet is a free resource for community members in need of incontinence supplies for adults. These items are costly and not covered by insurance. Many in our community already make the difficult choice between groceries and medication. The closet helps maintain the dignity of those with incontinence needs. Who do we serve? The closet primarily serves residents of Floyd County, although, consumers from surrounding counties are never turned away. The closet provides supplies for primarily elderly and those who are at or below poverty level. Since the closet opened in 2015, residents of 9 counties in NWGA have been served averaging more than 49 individuals per month. What do I do if I need supplies? Come to the closet located inside the Northwest Georgia Center for Independent Living located at 242 North Fifth Avenue, Rome, 30165 between 9am-4pm, Monday- Friday. You will sign up as a consumer on your first visit then you will be eligible for items on a monthly basis. How can you contribute to the closet? Simply bring unopened pull-ups, diapers or wipes to the NWGACIL during normal business hours. Our primary needs are adult pull-ups in all sizes. Monetary contributions made payable to NWGACIL with community closet in the memo will be utilized to purchase irregular or high demand sizes throughout the year. This is a joint effort of the RFPRA Senior Promotions Council and the Northwest Georgia Center for Independent Living. Contact the NWGACIL at 706-314-0008 with questions.
