Here and Now with Nina Lovel
Winter Moments welcome spring! THIS COLUMN ALMOST never got to press because my world went nuts for a minute in February. It’s not that I get depressed and need a happy-lamp in the winter; I just seem to make bad decisions when the year is young, and this year was no exception. Perhaps I’m in holiday-rebound or maybe I just want to get the new year under way, but the reason doesn’t matter because it’s not going to happen again: next year I’m not making any decisions until spring. You heard it here first: keep me accountable! By the time you read this the days will be longer, the sights, sounds and smells of spring will be chasing away a trying winter and my car will hopefully be out of the shop (more later). In the face of my February trials, I held tight to my beliefs that happiness is a choice and there’s something to be learned in every situation and, to be sure, I learned a lot. There were three moments that soothed the strife of my winter misadventures. Now, you may have heard me describe “glass dome moments”, those life-scenes so beautiful that you want to place a glass dome over them to keep forever. The winter moments in this column are not of that stripe. While they touched me deeply, I have no need to preserve them; I’ll just cling to the gratitude that they made me a better person. It was a real-estate decision and I had pondered it for months. I thought I wanted to make a move. I knew my desired location, had been hoping for it to come my way, and when it suddenly did, and the price and terms were easily negotiated and within my reach, I knew it was meant to be. The stars were aligned; the decision had practically made itself. A closing date was set and SPRING 2018 GRAND

I happily began preparing my house for sale and picking out paint colors. I did notice one issue with the property and questioned it a couple of times, but the answers I received were satisfactory. That is, until less than 24 hours before closing, when they suddenly weren’t. While the issue might be negligible to someone else, it was important to me and I opened one more conversation on it. Less than a minute into that chat, I experienced an epiphany so strong it nearly knocked me over. In a single moment, I realized that this was not a deal I needed to make. I knew I had to back out quickly, and I also knew that I would never regret doing so. In that fivesecond moment, months of hoping, weeks of anticipating and hours of planning fell away into a clarity and a peace unlike anything I’ve ever known. This was surprising, because I had not felt burdened with the decision until that moment. Immediately, I canceled the closing and reached out to make things right with the seller. It took a minute and cost a bit to get there, but the power in that moment of decision was a gift that I’ll never forget. While decisions on education, careers and child-raising are behind me, others lie ahead and I have no fear of them because God spoke clearly to me in one bright moment and saved me from living on a rocky road for the rest of my life. It will happen again if it needs to, and for this decision-moment of clarity I am eternally grateful. It wasn’t long before another kind of moment came my way. The day after I cancelled the closing, I was on my way downtown to jazz night when a lady ran a red light and crashed my car. Some might call it karma; I call it a dingbat not paying attention. (Don’t worry, she lives in
Virginia; she’ll never read this). Oh.How. FURIOUS.I.Was! Thankfully there were no injuries and of all convenient things, a state trooper saw the whole thing and was writing her a ticket by the time I stopped and got out to look at my car. I just stood there in the road staring at the smashed-
up front of my beloved car with new tires, getting madder by the minute. A car pulled up nearby, and the driver asked if I was okay. I assured her I was fine ( just mad) and she told me it wasn’t safe for me to be standing in the road like that. She said she was going to stay with me a few minutes in case I needed anything, and she had to tell me a couple more times to stop standing in the road. Once the emergency responders arrived, she bade me goodbye. This kind stranger had stopped to be present with me and for that I was grateful. I did get her name: thank you, Holly. Next, here came

my friend Kristie (who had been waiting for me at jazz night), to see me through. We sat in her car till the paperwork was done and the cars hauled off, and then she took me on to jazz night. Two moments of presence: one from a stranger, one from a friend; for these I am grateful. For the fact that no one was injured, I am grateful. For the accident itself, not so much. And it was only Tuesday! Stubbornly waiting for the atfault driver’s insurance company to contact me (they never did), I drove my big old loud truck for a few days. We are lucky to have that truck in the family, but it is old and loud and driving it added a fresh layer of overstimulation to my week. Leaving the grocery store on Friday, the cheerful demeanor I try hard to keep may or may not have been wearing thin. After I had loaded my bags into the big loud truck and turned to return my cart, a smiling lady reached out for my cart and said, “I’ll take this for you.” Sweet moment of kindness! This tiny gesture that any of us would do on any given day brought tears to my eyes when I didn’t even know I needed it. When was the last time you were graced with a kindness-moment like that? When was the last time you GAVE a kindness-moment like that? The crazy winter of 2018 brought me moments of decision, presence and kindness and I (I have to believe) am a better person for having survived it. I’m grateful for my fresh awareness that even the tiniest of moments can make a person’s day, or life. I’ll try to see more clearly into the needs of others and hope to never pass up another chance to pay these simple winter-borne gifts forward. May many kind moments be yours. Having said that, WELCOME, SPRING! It’s about time you got here; I’ve been waiting (not so) patiently…. SPRING 2018 GRAND

COMFORCARE
Growing Gray in Georgia with ComForCare Home Care AS THE OWNER of ComForCare Home Care for the past seven years, I have learned a great deal from working with seniors and their families, including the importance of hiring good folks who have a heart for caring for others and the importance of building a solid reputation. As I have grown from these lessons, I have also become aware that there are things I need to do better for the good of my company, the clients we serve and the caregivers we employ. One of these is the fact that I don’t do an adequate job of sharing the successes that ComForCare has achieved, so I’ll work to improve that right here and now. Recently ComForCare Home Care of Northwest Georgia has received three national awards recognizing the quality of care we provide to our clients and the atmosphere we create for our employees.
s Caring
Star of 2018 s
After receiving a five-star (highest possible) consumer rating from family caregivers and cognitively healthy older adults in the past year, ComForCare Home Care of Northwest Georgia was selected by Caring.com as a Caring Star of 2018 for in-home care service excellence. There are only four Caring Star 2018 agencies in Georgia, and just 253 across the nation! In addition to the high volume of positive reviews, our locally-owned home care provider excelled in added criteria that led to qualifying for the national honor. According to multiple Caring.com research studies, the majority of family caregivers turn to the Internet and consumer reviews when seeking local home care agencies and rely on them as much as or more than in-person recommendations from geriatric professionals or medical personnel. As we enter our seventh year, ComForCare’s Caring Star award places us at the top of home care agency listings, where consumers will learn that it was input from families just like theirs that gave us this top rating. Some of the positive feedback contributing to our 2018 Caring Star Award includes: “ComForCare does really well; they have people coming here every day and do what needs to be done.” “ComForCare provides the best care in Northwest Ga. ComForCare is a very reliable and dependable company!” “I would tell a friend that ComForCare provides the best help for me that I have ever had.”

ROME HEALTH AND REHAB
Where Amazing Things Happen with Rome Health and Rehab
Ready for Spring WARMER WEATHER, flowers blooming, birds chirping, bees buzzing, the smell of fresh cut grass……ahhhh, SPRING! After a cold and dreary winter and months of being closed indoors, there’s no denying that spring is one of the most welcoming seasons and the reason why everyone gets a little more pep in their step. From outdoor walks, exercising, gardening or starting the indoor/outdoor spring cleaning to-do list, almost everyone has some sort of agenda in mind. Being outdoors or a good spring cleaning works wonders, not just for your living environment but for your mind, body and soul. However, they are not entirely risk-free. Unfortunately, the renewed burst of spring activity also brings more risk of accidents and injuries. From falls, trips, scrapes, cuts and muscle injuries, everyone is at a greater risk of injury but especially the aging, elderly, and vulnerable population. While spring can certainly lift our spirits and get us going, we must be mindful of our surroundings and risk.
Following these safety tips can help minimize your risk for injury: Keep a first aid kit in your home and emergency medical numbers and family/friends numbers posted near your phone. Know your limits. If you already have back or knee problems, do not put any unnecessary strain on them. Bob Moore 14

Do not rush because you are tired or in a hurry. Take breaks, drink a glass of water, and sit in a cool area. Rest instead of being unsafe! Break tasks down. Don’t try to do it all at once. Don’t ignore pain. If you feel your muscle(s) tensing up, stop. Try to do some simple stretches but don’t push-on if something hurts. If you are in a lot of pain or the pain does not subside, do not hesitate to seek medical attention. Enlist help if you can. People generally love to help others so now would be a good time to enlist some willing helpers especially family or some friendly neighbors. Lift with caution! Be mindful of continuous lifting….repeated lifting over your head can cause shoulder injuries. Always bend your knees when lifting and lift through your legs, not your back. If a box feels too heavy to lift, separate the items in the box into 2-3 boxes. Always be mindful when moving furniture or appliances. Two people (sometimes even 3 or 4) are always better than one when it comes to heavy lifting! Use caution with ladders! Always have someone to hold the ladder and never step on wet rungs and always wear nonskid shoes. Do not lean/stretch too far to either side. A good rule of thumb is that your belly button should not go beyond the sides of the ladder. Always follow cleaning products and outdoor chemicals per the product label safety instructions and recommendations. Never mix chemicals, wear gloves and/or a mask, and keep the area you are working in well ventilated. Be careful on wet surfaces both inside and outside. A wet floor is a VERY high risk for slips, trips and falls!
Lisa Thomas, Denise Champagne, Jennifer Haislip-Lynn
Keep walkways, stairs, and landings free from bags, boxes and clutter. Never carry too much stuff especially on stairs. Always have one hand free to hold the railing. Even with no stairs or steps, make sure you can always see over the load you are carrying to prevent trips or falls. If you suffer from allergies, wear a mask when dusting and when outdoors. Don’t lift yard waste that is too heavy; use a dolly or wheelbarrow. Store water hoses and extension cords properly to avoid tripping. Lay ladders on their sides and rakes with the tines down. When working in the yard or even going for a walk, keep your cell phone on you at all times in the event you need to call for help. Don’t walk on slippery or even surfaces such as muddy embankment or area with steps when carrying yard waste or operating equipment.

The Best is Yet to Come Why be still after retirement, when this community offers the opportunity to make these years the best yet. Photography Contributed by The Spires at Berry College
Text Greg Howard
THE GREAT American poet and philosopher, Henry David Thoreau, once told us to “go confidently in the direction of your dreams, and live the life you’ve imagined.” If you have ever imagined retiring in a community where your continued care and independence is a priority, located on what has been called the most beautiful campus in the world, The Spires at Berry College may just have the answer. Years in the making, The Spires at Berry College will open in 2020 alongside the pristine Eagle Lake on the boundlessly beautiful campus of Berry College in Rome Georgia. This Continuing Care Retirement Community boasts that it will include everything you can imagine in a retirement community, from spacious apartment homes and cottages, an elegant dining center serving chef-made cuisine, a sparkling new wellness and fitness center, all along with having the security in knowing that a full complement of healthcare services are available at your convenience. plus the surrounding 27,000 The Lodge acres of beautiful North lobby at The Spires Georgia countryside that make up Berry College, and the youthful hum of its campus, will be just beyond your doorstep of The Spires. Your golden years should not take away your independence. That is why more and more seniors are including in their retirement plans, a planned move to a Continuing Care Retirement Community. A Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), sometimes called a Life Care or Life Plan Community, is a residential community which offers residents the opportunity to age in a place with a full continuum of living services on a single campus. Individuals can choose to live independently in an apartment or cottage of their choosing, all with the assurance that if and when needs should change, they have the benefit of a full spectrum of care options. Studies show that typically 83 percent of help for older adults is provided by friends or family members. However, it is now becoming more prevalent with better options for retirement, such as a CCRC, that seniors are taking their retirement and continued health care into their own hands. In a community such as the one of The Spires, residents can take advantage of a full range of care options, from assisted living, rehabilitation and skilled nursing, to memory care services close at hand, and in many cases, included in the cost of their residence agreement. In addition to the unique care facilities of The Spires, what makes this CCRC truly unique is the close relationship residents will have with the Berry College Community as a whole. Residents of The Spires will be able to take full advantage of the campus facilities - from attending campus events, using the dining facilities, to sitting in on lectures. Really, it’s all the joys of the college life, without the requirements. Buster Wright, the chairman of the real estate committee for the Berry College Board of Trustees, as well as the founder of the Berry College Center for Integrity 20

in Leadership believes that The Spires will bring wonderful opportunities for not only the residents of the retirement community, but the students of the campus as well. “We will have a number of (CCRC) residents who have been successful in all walks of life, who will come to live adjacent to the Berry College campus, that will have a unique opportunity to be potential mentors in career development and personal growth for the students,” says Wright. “Not to mention the career opportunities that the CCRC will bring. The Spires will bring opportunities for our nursing school, for internships in marketing and business, as well as opportunities for students who work on the landscaping crew.”

Melody Dreyer, a Berry College Nursing Major who will be graduating this year, is very excited to see the project come to fruition and witness what the new retirement community will bring to the campus. “I think The Spires is an awesome idea - so many people love this campus and its beauty, and I believe it will be very beneficial for those who are retired to be able to be part of our community,” says Dreyer. “I know from personal experience with my own great grandmother, that assisted living homes can be very isolating and not central to anything, so I think having Berry as the center for this type of development will really bring some youthful energy into the lives of the residents.” Morgan Lamphere, the vice president of Marketing for Greenbrier, a consulting agency working alongside The Spires, agrees to the fact that this development stands as both a wonderful opportunity to both retired residents and students. “We not only look at this as an opportunity for the residents of The Spires to have a vibrant retirement setting and enjoy all the wonderful things the campus has to offer, but it is also an opportunity to continue what Berry College presents to its students, which is lifelong learning,” says Lamphere. “And what better way to continue learning outside the classroom, than from people who have a lifetime of experience?” Most of us would agree that a retirement spent at The Spires sounds wonderful, but is it financially practical? What is truly surprising is how affordable a CCRC like The Spires can be, especially considering how all inclusive the life a resident of a CCRC will find it to be. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, seniors over the age of 65 spend nearly double the percentage of their income on health care as compared to adults ages 55-64, and nearly three times the percentage of adults age 45-54. On top of those statistics over 40% of seniors report household- related expenses to be their biggest expenses in retirement. When taking into consideration the amount
these residents would normally spend on not only continued health care, but just general living expenses, most residents will find it makes the most financial sense to be a member of a CCRC Community. Take it from a future resident, Phyllis Dasher, who is excited to move into her lakefront apartment home at The Spires. “If we could look into a mirror and see our entire life reflected back at us, what would we see? Would we be content with our actions or would we see missed opportunities to make changes at important junctures,” asks Dasher “When my husband Ron and I made the choice to reserve a lakefront apartment home at The Spires at Berry College a few months ago, it was with that question in mind. I
feel certain that being back in that setting, surrounded by bright young people, will keep us young. Just as important to us is the proximity to Rome, our home town, with its fine shops and restaurants, friendly neighbors and world-class healthcare facilities. In this late season of our lives, Ron and I feel extremely fortunate to have found a place where we know we’ll feel at home.” And that is exactly what a Continuing Care Retirement Community such as The Spires at Berry College will become for its residents - home.
