The things we are passionate about form who we are. Some people collect stamps or dolls. Some people take up a sport or hobbies like bird watching. We hike, we bike, we go to concerts…we all have something or some things that we aspire to do and see. We don’t always understand other people’s passions, but at the root, they are all the same. I have a lot of them. Music, sports, novels, just about anything pop culture. They dominate the space in my brain. While music and sports have jockeyed for top position throughout my life, college football stands firmly on my personal Mount Rushmore of things I love most. My mom and dad made the introduction, but I took it to the next level almost immediately. My father was well-versed in the history and lore of the sport and shared all kinds of wonderful stories, many of which made me love my teams more and grow to despise our bitter rivals. I couldn’t get enough. Magazines, books, radio, and television shows…I wanted information overload.

For a few years, we had season tickets to Georgia Tech games. Luckily one was during their 1990 national championship run and I remember always getting a program before every game. For those seasons, Mike Lester, a local cartoonist I’m sure many of you are familiar with, illustrated the covers. The theme was Buzz outsmarting the opposition's mascot in some hilarious way and I saved every one of them. Those programs were my introduction to the art and sculptures that so many college football fans collect. Some are recreations of historic moments on the field and others are hilarious caricatures of mischievous mascots, tailored to that fan base, of course, getting the better of their annual opponents. I have my fair share of memorabilia and an appreciation for the artists who create it. This edition of our SEC Preview is the 11th such issue we have published at V3. It’s something I look forward to every year and I’m extra excited about this edition in large part because of our cover. We were introduced to Noah Stokes through a feature on RocknShop in Cartersville as his artwork was for sale in the record shop. Athletes and musicians were his subjects, so I gravitated to his work right away. That led to us featuring him in our May edition and that’s when the idea of having Noah create something one-of-a-kind for the SEC issue hit me.

Mr. Stokes captured the playful nature of the cartoons I enjoyed growing up perfectly. As a gator fan, I sure wish my team was king of the hill this season, but the Dawgs earned their spot at the top and so UGA wears the crown. Alabama’s prominence remains the golden standard and everyone else fighting hard to take them down…except Vanderbilt, but you all know that. I’m even more excited to offer our readers and college football fans like myself the opportunity to own a limited-edition print (run of 100) by following the link at the bottom of this note. We will also auction off the original oil painting Noah created before digitizing the image for print. It truly is a snapshot of the conference as it stands today. With all the changes on the horizon for the sport, it will never be quite the same. I hope you all enjoy this issue as much as I enjoy putting it together. Happy football season!

Friendships are living, breathing things, constantly adapting to the ebb and flow of our lives. They can persevere as fortified refuges enduring a

lifetime or become fragile and brittle, crumbling over time. I don’t know the secret to lasting friendships. Still, I know that from casual acquaintances to my dearest close friends, these relationships are my connection to the world. They encourage my sense of belonging, strengthen my self-esteem, and have helped me navigate through life’s bitterest of trials.

By Tammy

A VIBRANT RISE AND FALL OF LAUGHTER AND GIGGLES cause me to glance over my shoulder. I am struck by the sight, seeing not a group of teenage girls as expected but rather a lively group of eight elderly women, strolling arm in arm down the boardwalk in 30A. Their slow and careful pace plays the most delightful juxtaposition to the frenetic energy of their five simultaneous conversations. I let them pass me on the sidewalk for a chance to watch them. They clung to each other, keeping one another steady on the uneven walkway while chattering about everything and nothing. “Girl’s trip,” one of them chirped as they shuffled into a beachside café.

Relationships I made in my early adulthood shaped the person I am today, though I have lost touch with most of those people over the years. Going to college and moving away, changing jobs, and raising a family seemed to deprioritize friends in my life. Just now, as my children grow more independent, I feel like I am emerging from a cave and realize how isolated I have been. I yearn to reconnect with my friends. One day, I want to be one of those old women clinging together in a parade of joy, surrounded by people who share a lifetime’s worth of laughter and tears. Life in a small town is peculiar. It is a place where our stories are intertwined and woven together like an old sweater, weathered and torn in spots, its fibers worn soft over time. Unlike the anonymity I often basked in throughout my youth in the city, the intimacy of this place bears witnesses and testimony of my life, shoulder to shoulder with my friends and neighbors. In the city, I could go years without bumping into old faces, which was convenient in avoiding conversation about a wild night out or a messy breakup. Growing up, my parents never resolved conflicts with their friends and family. They simply cut them out of their life and moved on. The sprawling city promised you would never see them again. You just changed your hangouts, grocery store, or gym. That is an impossible scenario in this small southern town. Here, where everyone is connected by a mere one degree of separation- you can’t amputate a relationship so neatly. Everyone is related, coworkers, or churchmates. In acclimating to life here in Rome, I saw conflict resolution for the first time. It looked awkward and tricky, but it was mesmerizing to see friends carry on. Their friendship becomes a ledger of squabbles and secrets, laughter doors Barron

READV3.COM | AUGUST 2022 V 3 MAGAZINE 11 and heartbreak, daring escapades and embarrassing blunders. I had never seen relationships bear the weight of a Decadeslifetime.ago, shortly after moving here, my husband—then boyfriend—and I went out for drinks. We were with a large group of people—which is easy when everyone in town knows each other—and I saw my boyfriend chatting it up with his ex-girlfriend. I’m not one for jealousy, but I was shocked and agitated. When someone asked me why I was upset, and I explained, they told me, “To grow up.” You see, I had never seen people work out their problems and move on as friends. I had never practiced forgiveness before. I had never really seen it. It takes emotional maturity to accept the good and the bad of others, to see the humanity in them and love them for it. What I took for disrespect was really the act of friendship. I did have some growing up to do. My mind shifts to the friendships that have slipped away, those that didn’t evolve. They grew stagnant and withered. Those relationships were destined to fade into memory without mutual reciprocity of interests, trust, and admiration. Streaking across an overpass, braving wildlife encounters while camping, and oddball talent shows and field parties that carried on through the night, these school-aged rites of passage were so monumental. I would have sworn these moments would bond us for life. But people change. I’ve changed. Could I have done things differently to keep the connection strong and thriving? Like a classic Marilyn Monroe film, I heard that friendships have a seven-year timetable. In this span of time, our lives will shift significantly enough to strengthen or break most of our relationships. Seems a little morbid to consider the death of significance for those who are important to me, but I can see how the faces of my network have changed over the years. New faces have replaced old ones. I wonder where the old faces are and if they are happy. Now on the rare occasion that I do get out with friends, I appreciate how these relationships have shifted over their course. We have gotten married, started careers, and become parents. We may have been silent in each other’s lives for long periods, but we pick up right where we left off the last time we were together. I look at faces aged twenty years and realize how important they’ve been throughout the journey. Sometimes, a fear creeps into my psyche, a concern that I will be lonely when I get older if I don’t invest more time in my friendships now. Who will be my companions when my family is grown and moved on? But then I let that fear subside. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, it sounds effortless, “The only way to have a friend is to be one.” So, I’ll give what time I can and be understanding of the pressures that keep friends absent. Until we meet again- cheers to my homies.

In the west Jimbo Fischer, the first Saban assistant to beat his former boss has made plenty of noise on the recruiting trail and with his aforementioned victory over King Nick, but that hasn’t brought him a division title yet. Can he get over the hump this year or will he need a few more top recruiting classes to get there?

As for the rest of the West, the Brian Kelly era begins at LSU, Arkansas looks to build on a surprising season in 2021, and Lane Kiffin is always a wild card but moves forward without Matt Corral. It's hard to see anyone other than the Aggies challenging the Tide, but that’s why they play the games.

GRIFFIN | WEST:

While there is still hope those conferences can find a way to pick up additional teams and rebuild, the money, and thus decision-making power, will soon lie with the SEC and Big 10. Rumors are swirling of additional defections and while nothing is concrete, it’s safe to say anything is possible at this point.

As for the 2022 season, the questions remain much the same as in the last few years. Can anyone take down Georgia or Alabama?

So, this is it. With Texas and Oklahoma looking to start SEC play in 2024 and the Los Angeles duo of USC and UCLA joining the Big 10 that same year, these next two seasons will be the curtain call for many of college football’s traditions and rivalries. It’s not all doom and gloom. We’ve been down this road before, but not quite to this extent, so trying to predict what it will look like when the dust settles is a tough task. For now, when it comes to the SEC, we know the Longhorns and Sooners are coming, and that will dramatically change the conference where it just means more. Divisions may be done away with for a rotational schedule like the ACC will put in place next season. Annual rivalries will go by the wayside no matter how they decide to handle it, so I suppose my grand message here, is for everyone to soak it all up this year and get ready to adjust to the new normal in 2024.

The East seems even more predetermined. With the Dan Mullen era over and the Billy Napier era set to begin, the Gators have gone from nipping at the bulldog's heels to staring at Uga’s backside from a distance. Josh Huepel has some momentum at Tennessee, but that’s been the story for two decades in Knoxville. While I think he may actually get them back to competing for the division, they aren’t ready to dethrone the Dawgs this year. That leaves Kentucky, South Carolina, Missouri, and Vandy…and I’m not buying anyone selling those teams to be in Atlanta come December.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL AS WE KNOW IT IS COMING TO AN END. EAST:

So, as we brace for change to our beloved sport, we can likely expect more of the same in 2022. But hey…anything is possible. IAN JIM

THAT IS A FACT, not fiction as conference realignment is underway and the SEC and Big 10 are poised to become the Power 2, leaving the Big 12, ACC, and Pac-12 in their wake.

ALRED

2022 PROJECTION:

Defense: This side of the ball returns six starters and plenty of guys that got playing time last year. Ventrell Miller is back for a sixth year of eligibility as a middle linebacker and should be a difference maker. Brenton Cox Jr. is a beast on the edge and Gervon Dexter is a future NFL starter at defensive tackle. The depth on the middle of the d line is paper thin though, so some of the young guns will have to step up for the Gators' D to stay fresh when things matter in the 4th quarter.

The secondary lost Kaiir Elam, but Trey Dean and company should still be the strength of a defense that must improve on the only 12 turnovers they forced last season if they are to exceed expectations in the win/loss column.

Final Thoughts: The schedule is brutal with defending Pac-12 Champ, Utah to open the season, road trips to Tennessee and Texas A&M, and the Dawgs in Jacksonville, it's hard to envision anything above 6 or 7 wins in Napier’s first season

Special Teams: Jeremy Crawshaw returns after a great first season as punter and Adam Mihalek and Trey Smack are battling it out for the placekicking duties, but either should be capable.

2021 RESULTS:

GATORSFLORIDA 6-7, 2-6 (SEC) 7-5, 5-3 (SEC) Overview: After three straight New Year’s Six bowl appearances and an SEC East Championship it seemed like the Gators had found their man in Dan Mullen, but the warts were beginning to show with a lack of discipline (shoe throwing included) and subpar recruiting during his tenure. Then the wheels fell off in a 2-6 conference campaign and so starts the Billy Napier era in Gainesville. Napier is a detail-oriented guy who has shot straight with the gator nation, but his biggest obstacle may be gaining their patience for a rebuild more so than the daunting schedule that awaits in 2022.

Offense: The Emory Jones project failed last year, and the fans now get what they wanted so badly last season. Anthony Richardson is the starting quarterback. Richardson has had brilliant flashes but whether or not his potential can turn into stardom remains to be seen. They have experience on the line, but little depth. The backfield has plenty of talent, but little experience. And the wide receiver room is filled with good possession guys but is still looking for a guy that can take the top off the defense. Napier did well in the transfer portal, but there are a lot of questions and concerns that we won’t get the answer to until they take the field against Utah in September.

defensive line and coach Smart looks for Zion Logue and Nazir Stackhouse to be big contributors on the d-line as well. Linebacker may have been hit hardest, but Nolan Smith returning for his senior season gives a talented bunch of replacements the leadership to avoid a drop-off. The secondary showed some chinks in the armor in the SEC Championship Game last year and will need some young guys to step up, but should be a better unit in 2022. They may not be quite as nasty as last season, but don’t be surprised if they are close.

Overview: The wait is over. The Georgia Bulldogs are the reigning National Champions, and they will look to repeat that feat in 2022. They lost a lot of star power on defense especially, but Kirby Smart has BENNETT, JORDAN DAVIS

Special Teams: Jake Carmarda is gone after what seems like two decades at punter, but Aussie Brett Thorson looked good in the spring and should do just fine. Jack Podlesny is back at placekicker after converting on 22-25 attempts last season, and Kearis Jackson is as scary a return man as there is in college football.

Final Thoughts: The schedule sets up beautifully for another undefeated regular season in Athens. Auburn and Mississippi State are the crossover games and Kentucky looks to be the toughest road test they will face all season. The opener against Oregon is a bit of a wild card because the Ducks can be pretty solid, but it is in Atlanta, so that favors the Bulldogs. In the end, Georgia will win the East and have their chance to repeat as National Champions.

READV3.COM | AUGUST 2022 V 3 MAGAZINE 19

Offense: Stetson Bennett could have ridden off into the sunset with his championship ring, but NIL and the opportunity to wear the red and black for one more season were too much to turn down. It's crazy to say this about a returning national champion starting quarterback, but he will have to fend off Brock Vandagriff, Carson Beck, and Gunner Stockton to have the fairytale ending he got last season. The o-line is stacked and though they must replace Zamir White and James Cook, running backs have never been an issue at Georgia. The tight ends may be the best in the country, and they return plenty of talent and experience at receiver. No matter who takes the snaps, the Dawgs shouldn’t have any problem scoring points.

Defense: Losing eight starters to the NFL draft and five of those going in the first round has to hurt, right? Most would say absolutely, but that may not be the case for this junkyard bunch. Jalen Carter and his 6-3 310lb frame return to solidify the middle of the

rusher in the conference, Chris Rodriguez Jr., who racked up 1,134 yards last season. The offensive line replaces three starters, so that will be something to keep an eye on, but the Cats are starting the season with more confidence on offense than any other season during Stoops tenor.

Offense: The aforementioned Levis will be the heart and soul of this offense. He tossed 24 touchdowns to 13 interceptions last season, so he will look to improve his accuracy and will have to do so without the services of the oh-so-slippery Wan’Dale Robinson. He will have some weapons and another Robinson to throw to in Virginia Tech transfer Tayvion Robinson that has a similar skill set to Wan’Dale. He also has the luxury of handing the ball off to the top returning

CHRIS RODRUGUEZ JR.

Final Thoughts: The schedule sets up well and if they can take down Florida at the Swamp for a third victory in three years against the Gators, this season could be another 10win campaign. The trip to Oxford in week five will be pivotal, as will the game in Knoxville a few weeks later. Georgia is simply three cuts above everyone in the East, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kentucky finish second if the ball bounces their way.

20 V 3 MAGAZINE AUGUST 2022 | READV3.COM

Overview: The Cats are coming off a 10-3 campaign in which they finished 18th in the AP Poll and capped off the season with a 20-17 Citrus Bowl win over Iowa. Mark Stoops is set to surpass Bear Bryant as the winningest head coach in Kentucky history, he is one short of the record with a 59-53 record over 9 years. He has built the program to be a tough-out and consistent middle-of-the-pack SEC East finisher. Will Levis returns at quarterback and though the defense has to replace a lot of production from 2021 they have the pieces to be as good as last year's unit.

Defense: Mark Stoops always has a salty defense, and this year will be no different. They did suffer big losses in every position group, on Josh Paschal, Yusul Corker, and Marquan McCall, but even with those departures, they may have more depth than ever. They have plenty of beef in the middle of Brad White’s 3-4 scheme, led by former five-star recruit Justin Rogers and Octavious Oxendine, who looked like an absolute beast before a season-ending leg injury. They have three seniors returning in the linebacker corps and plenty of leadership in the secondary. Though it's hard to imagine them improving without those three stars from 2021, the Cats should be better on the defensive side of the ball in 2022.

Special Teams: Mat Ruffolo decided to use his 5th year of eligibility and will return to serve as placekicker after hitting 26-32 attempts last season. Wilson Berry will handle the punting duties after a redshirt season in 2021 and senior Chance Poor will return kicks, so the cats should be solid on special teams.

Offense: Finding a starting quarterback is priority number one in Columbia. Brady Cook looked good in the bowl game against Army and followed that up with a solid spring, but the battle remains open between him and Tyler Macon for the starting job. Drinkwitz hasn’t ruled out using the transfer portal to find a signal caller, but after missing on several, the Tigers have yet to sign another gunslinger. The winner of the job has plenty of experience to throw to, with five guys that were a part of the rotation last year. They must replace the SEC’s leading rusher, Tyler Baddie, and may do so by committee, while all three tight ends that saw playing time last year are no longer with the team. The line returns four starters, but will have to break in a new center, which can be tricky, so to say there are a lot of unknowns on offense would be an understatement.

TRAJAN JEFFCOAT

Overview: After two straight .500 regular season finishes, Eliah Drinkwitz is looking to get his Missouri Tigers over the hump. They want to compete for the Eastern Division, and currently, second place is truly there for the taking, but everyone is looking way up to the Georgia Bulldogs. The Tigers have finished in the top 20 in recruiting the last two years and managed to bring in a lot of help via the transfer portal on defense in the off-season. To overachieve in 2022, they will need some of those young players and transfers to step up big time and with the departure of Connor Bazelak, a leader under center will need to emerge as well.

Special Teams:

The Tigers return a first-team All-American candidate to handle the place-kicking duties in Harrison Mevis and have an experienced punter and slew of shifty return men. There really aren’t any chinks in the armor on the Tigers' special teams units.

Final Thoughts:

Defense: Missouri will have its third defensive coordinator in as many years with Blake Baker taking the reins in 2022. He runs a 4-2-5 scheme, which matches up with his predecessor, Steve Wilks's philosophy, so they won’t have to reinvent the wheel, but Tiger fans are hoping this coordinator sticks. The Tigers finished near the bottom of the league in every statistical category on the defensive side of the ball but did improve late in the season. They have two anchors on the line in Isiah McGuire and Trajan Jeffcoat, so the tradition of strong play up front will continue this season. The linebacker room is led by Chad Bailey and should be a strength while the secondary has a surplus of safeties and plenty of healthy competition at corner. With the experience returning and transfers added, this should be a much-improved unit from 2021.

The defense should be better, but with an unproven starter at quarterback, it's hard to see the Tigers lighting up the scoreboard in 2022. They will likely lean on the running game and try to win games with a gritty, grind-it-out strategy. There are a lot of winnable games on the schedule, but outside of the three gimmies, they all could be losable as well. A bowl game would be a win as Drinkwitz continues to try and build a contender.

Overview: What Shane Beamer did in year one with what was left in the cupboard at South Carolina was nothing short of remarkable. It wasn’t pretty, especially on offense, but they beat the brakes off Florida and scored a win over Auburn just a few weeks later. That’s a good season in Columbia regardless of the rest of the results, but they went on to beat North Carolina 38-21 in the

Final Thoughts: With all the praise showered in the paragraphs above, the projected record might seem surprising, but the schedule is tough with crossover games at Arkansas and Texas A&M coming to Columbia and the East is Georgia light years ahead of everyone at the top and Vandy light years below everyone at the bottom. The two through six spots are a crap shoot and Spencer Rattler’s play is the wild card. If he delivers on the hype, it could be a much better season than 6-6, but either way, I’m going out on a limb and predicting they bust their losing streak to Clemson to end the regular season. I’ll probably regret that, but we shall see.

Defense: Though the defense managed to improve when it came to points per game, they were 11th in rushing yards allowed in 2021 and that stat must improve to contend in 2022. Zacch Pickens gives stability and star power to a defensive front that has experience,

depth, and for the first time in any of their tenure, the same defensive line coach returning. They are thin at linebacker and safety, but the ones are solid.

Depth is an issue everywhere but the defensive line so injuries and stamina could cause problems as the season stretches into October and November.

Offense: Other than Florida making them look like worldbeaters, the Gamecocks offense was putrid in 2021. They had some bright spots but struggled to put points on the board, thanks largely to poor quarterback play. Spencer Rattler lost his job at Oklahoma, but he was a heck of a player that had an even better talent behind him, and he brings that chip on his shoulder to Columbia. He has the experience to throw to Josh Vann and Dekereon Joyner. Add in a potential breakout star in the SEC with tight end Jaheim Bell and the Cocks could go from imploding to explosive on offense. They lost their top two rushers from last season, but MarShawn Lloyd had a great spring and looks ready to carry the load and he will run behind a line that returns all five starters. That helps chemistry and continuity, but none of the five projects to play in the NFL and haven’t wowed on film so they will need to step up their game in 2022.

Special Teams:

Parker White left Columbia as the program's alltime leading scorer. Those are big kicking shoes to fill, but Mitch Jeter had a great spring and shouldn’t be much of a drop-off from White. Left-footed Kai Kroeger will handle the punting duties and the spin southpaws can generate haunt returner’s dreams.

Dukes Mayo Bowl to finish with a winning record without a quality quarterback. That’s good coaching. Now Beamer gets last year’s preseason front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, Spencer Rattler to work with. This could be interesting.

Josh Vann and Juju McDowell return to handle punt and kickoff duties.

Offense: If you never watched Heupel’s Central Florida teams, it is hard to fathom how quickly they played. With a year’s experience in the system, this Vols team will look a lot more like his UCF squad and I promise you it almost seems unfair to opposing defenses. Hooker should thrive in the system this season and he has his favorite target, Cedric Tillman returning after posting 64 catches for 1,081 yards in 2021. They need some other secondary receivers to step up and that will have to come from the young guns like Caleb Webb, Chas Nimrod, and a few others. The line returns four starters but must replace a stalwart at right tackle in Cade Mays. They struggled in short distance last year and that is a big focus for the line in the off-season.

Special Teams: Chase McGrath and Paxton Brooks both return after strong 2021 campaigns to form a reliable kicking duo. Velus Jones Jr., who led the SEC in punt returns last season is gone and at the time of publishing, no primary return men had been identified.

HENDON HOOKER yards to five opponents last year. You just can’t do that and ascend in the SEC. The secondary was torched repeatedly last season and there isn’t much depth to speak of. If they can improve at all the win total should go up, but this side of the ball could be what holds Tennessee back from a potential second-place finish in the East.

Defense: This unit has a ton of concerns, and the only con of an up-tempo offense is how much the defense will have to be on the field, so that exacerbates the problem. They couldn’t get to the quarterback and gave up 500

Overview: Josh Heupel delivered his fast-paced offense to the Vol faithful and managed to do more with less in his first campaign in Knoxville. The Vols have been a running joke for years now. Always seeming to be on the cusp of restoring glory to a once proud program only to fall apart all over again. Bringing in AD Danny White and settling for Heupel may finally get them over the hump. Hendon Hooker should be one of the best signal callers in the SEC, but the defense will have to improve a great deal or Tennessee will have to win shootouts every Saturday.

Final Thoughts: Sometimes the best defense is a ball control offense, but that isn’t the way Josh Heupel rolls. They are going to go Ricky Bobby fast when they have the ball, and the defense is going to have to deal with it. With better recruiting, they can catch up on that side of the ball, but it is the only thing that can stop Tennessee from getting to nine wins this season as the schedule sets up well for the Vols and their reward could be as good as an NYE Bowl game if things go their way.

Final Thoughts: There are three winnable games on the schedule for Vanderbilt this season. Anything else can be considered an upset. I’m not saying it won’t happen, but it’s highly unlikely and another winless conference campaign seems to be in the cards for the Nashville faithful.

Offense: Dual-threat Mike Wright will steer the offense, but Ken Seals has plenty of experience slinging the ball around the yard as well, so if there is one steady position, it's quarterback. Steady is good, but neither guy has the wow factor either. They have experience on a line that struggled last year, so they will hope to show the improvement that should come with a season of playing side by side. Running back Re’Mahn Davis was lost to injury most of last season but looked good during spring, while Will Sheppard returns after leading the team in catches and yards at the receiver positions. One player to watch will be tight end Ben Bresnahan. He showed flashes last season and should get more opportunities in 2022.

Defense: Much of Vanderbilt’s struggles on defense last season were a result of not sustaining drives on offense. They are very solid at the linebacker position and while the defensive line lacks depth the ones are reliable. The secondary is short on experience and depth. The one exception to that is safety Max Worship, who started every game for the Dore’s last season. That unit did produce 13 interceptions last season, which will be tough to match, and they did it with a pass rush that only managed 9 sacks on the season. The defense should be better fundamentally in 2022, but they simply lack the depth and talent to stop SEC opponents consistently.

Overview: Things went as expected for the Dores in 2021. For the second straight year, they didn’t win a single conference game. The only difference was the man wearing the headset. Clark Lea was left with a talent gap too big to overcome after Derek Mason’s departure. They lack the team speed needed to keep up with the rest of the conference on both sides of the ball and what James Franklin built is now just ashes.

Special Teams: Joseph Bulovas was a little shaky at times but also delivered game-winners in both the Commodores victories last year at the placekicker position. FAU transfer, Matt Hayball will take over the punting duties, while the return game should be in good hands with Jayden McGowan and Alan “Taco” Wright.

2022 PROJECTION:

Offense: Offensively, Alabama is a mixed bag of returners. Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Young comes back, but he loses two of his three offensive linemen from a unit that had some issues at times. Most of Young’s offensive weapons have departed with tight end Cameron Latu being one of the big returners. Running back transfer Jahmyr Gibbs could prove to be yet another stud in a long line of great Bama running backs. All told, while the line has some questions and the receivers lack experience, Young should be more than good enough to keep the Tide’s offense churning along. 13-2, 7-1 (SEC) 12-0, 8-0 (SEC)

Defense: While Alabama’s offense has been stealing headlines the past couple of years, the Tide’s defense returns a ridiculous amount of talent for 2022. Most pundits have Alabama’s defensive backfield rated as one of the tops in the country. Add to that Anderson and Henry Too Too at linebacker and a solid defensive line group coming back and Alabama could sport one of the top defenses in the entire country. There are even some pundits wondering if Anderson could be a factor in the Heisman Trophy voting this year. Honestly, if he stays injury free, it’s not outside the realm of possibility.

Alabama losing to conference rival Georgia in the national championship game after beating the Bulldogs a few weeks earlier in the SEC Championship game meant the 2021 season ended on a sour note. While Alabama has to replace some top-notch departed talent, they might have the best offensive and defensive returners in the nation with quarterback Bryce Young and linebacker Will Anderson.

Final Thoughts: Alabama almost always has a tough non-conference foe in their schedule and this year they travel to Austin to play Texas the second week of the season. While Texas hasn’t been great the Longhorns are never easy to beat at home. Most Alabama fans will circle the Tide’s Oct. 8 contest at home against Texas A&M after the Aggies upset the Tide last year in College Station. Alabama has to travel to Baton Rouge to face LSU in November but draws Auburn at home to the end season. Saban’s teams have made a habit of coming back after what they consider letdowns the year before, and with the defense, the Tide has combined with Young at quarterback Alabama should be back in the conversation for not only a spot in the college football playoff but also another national title.

CRIMSONALABAMATIDE 2021 RESULTS:

Overview: It’s tough to figure out what to think about Auburn and second-year coach Bryan Harsin. After starting last season 6-2, the Tigers lost their final five games including four-straight losses where they held the lead in the second half and collapsed. After a tumultuous offseason with some player defections, including four-year quarterback starter Bo Nix, a total review of the program, and Harsin firing his offensive and defensive coordinators, all eyes turn to Auburn to see if Harsin has any prayer of righting the ship and keeping his job.

Returning quarterback starter TJ Finley has been unimpressive and faces challenges from Texas A&M transfer Zach Calzada and Oregon transfer Robby Ashford along with a couple of others. The Tigers should be set at running back where Tank Bigsby returns. If Bigsby can stay healthy and get some blocking, he will get a lot of yards this season.

Defense: Defensively, Auburn has some solid players returning along the line, at linebacker, and in the secondary, but their depth is questionable. Perhaps the biggest key for the Tigers comes at linebacker with senior Owen Pappoe. The defender missed most of 2021 with a leg injury and the defense suffered at times without his presence. If he can stay healthy and the Tigers don’t get hurt by their depth, they could be a solid unit.

Final Thoughts: The schedule isn’t terrible, but Auburn does draw the unfortunate privilege of playing Georgia and Alabama, last year’s participants in the college football championship game, on the road this year. If Auburn can gel in time for their Sept. 17 date against Penn State at Jordan Hare Stadium, things could get interesting. As always, the Tigers play in the SEC West and boast one of the toughest schedules in the nation, so even a 7-5 record which looks bad might not be considering the talent level they face. In the end, the big question with the Tigers is how long will the administration let Harsin stay? Hiring him from Boise State wasn't the most popular choice, and if Auburn stumbles down the backstretch again in 2022 there is a strong possibility the Tigers could be shopping for a new head coach for 2023.

BRIAN KELLY

Overview: Two years removed from quite possibly the greatest team to ever take the field for LSU, the Tigers face an uncertain future with new coach Brian Kelly. No one doubts Kelly’s coaching acumen having taken his former school, Notre Dame, to the college football playoff twice. But many pundits wonder if Kelly and his style of coaching can translate to the pressure cooker better known as the SEC West.

Kelly’s first road SEC West game. That is followed by contests against Tennessee, Florida, Ole Miss, and then Alabama, so that stretch in October until early November will prove how good LSU can be in 2022. The other elephant in the room is Kelly. He proved he could win at Notre Dame but his teams got throttled by good teams in the playoffs both times they advanced. The Irish also tend to play a much easier schedule than what LSU plays every year, so the verdict is still out on how good a coach Kelley is and whether he can handle the task at hand. Remember, Ed Orgeron won a national championship and was fired two years later.

Final Thoughts: LSU’s schedule is a bit of an enigma. The Tigers open with a Florida State team that has underperformed for a few years but will be looking to get a statement win. If LSU can get past them and handle what is going to be a tough Mississippi State team on Sept. 17, they could be 4-0 when they head to Auburn on Oct. 1 for 6-7, 3-5 (SEC) 6-6, 3-5

Offense: Offensively, LSU has two huge questions to answer - who is going to be the starting quarterback, and can the offensive line play get better? Kelly noted before spring practice that he was concerned about the offensive line. LSU’s offensive front made running the ball almost impossible against some opponents last season.Asforthe quarterback spot, Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels and Myles Brennan, who suffered a freak arm injury last year, will compete along with a couple of others for signal caller duties. If Brennan or Daniels win the job, they both have tons of experience and will have some weapons to work with.

2022 PROJECTION:

Defense: Defensively, LSU has solid starters at the interior defensive line positions but questions on the outside of the line. The Tigers have a lot of talent at linebacker and defensive secondary including a couple of transfers, but they don’t have a ton of experience. Most importantly, LSU’s defense needs to be able to force turnovers, disrupt the passing pocket, and limit the opponent’s scoring opportunities. If LSU’s defense can gel and develop some key playmakers, it will be a huge benefit for the 2022 season.

TIGERSLSU 2021 RESULTS:

the SEC West schedule starts. If Ole Miss can handle its first six opponents with Kentucky looking to be the toughest, they might be undefeated when Auburn comes calling on October 15. From that point on however the Rebels face LSU, Texas A&M, Alabama, and Arkansas, so the bulk of how well their season goes will be determined from mid-October on. As with all SEC West teams, the Rebels are chasing Alabama and trying to figure out a way to supplant the Tide. Kiffen has proved more than capable of developing a great offense. His talents will be needed this year with a lack of starting experience at all of the offensive skill positions. If Kiffen can plug and play and keep the offense churning, the Rebels will be just as dangerous in 2022 as they were in 2021. If the Rebels can grow and take advantage of an easier early slate of games, they could grow into a capable team in time to face the bulk of the schedule in October. If that happens, Ole Miss could find itself right back in the thick of the conversation for an SEC West title.

Defense: The bulk of Ole Miss’ returning depth on defense comes in the secondary, as the Rebels will be replacing a lot of talent on the defensive line and at linebackers. However, Kiffen has gotten a slew of transfers from across the country in hopes to be able to plug them in and get fast results. Some pundits ranked Ole Miss’ incoming class of transfers from the portal as the best in the entire nation.

Overview: Ole Miss turned lots of heads in 2021, compiling a 10-3 record and finishing 11th nationally in the final polls. Now head coach Lane Kiffen and company face a tough task as they must replace a slew of starters on both offense and defense.

Offense:

OLE REBELSMISS 2021 RESULTS: 10-3,

First, the good news about Ole Miss’ offense is that the Rebels return several starters on the offensive line. However, the bulk of the yardage is gone as is all-world quarterback Matt Corall. USC transfer Jaxson Dart will compete with Luke Altmyer and Kinkead Dent to see who grabs the starting quarterback spot. With a solid and experienced offensive line in place, the Rebels offense still has a chance to put up some eye-popping numbers.

Defense: The Bulldogs return eight starters on defense as well. Playing defense for Mississippi State isn’t super easy, as the offense tends to score quickly and not stay on the field for long periods of time. This means the defense has to be deep and ready to perform.

Overview: The second year of Mike Leach’s tenure at Mississippi State should prove to be quite intriguing. The Bulldogs return more starters combined than any other team in the Southeastern Conference off a team that finished 7-6 in 2021. Three of those losses were by three points or less meaning the Bulldogs weren’t too far from a 10-win season.

Safety Shawn Preston WILL ROGERS had an off year in 2021 but has the potential to really wreak havoc on opposing offensive passing games.

Offense: The Bulldogs’ offense had some great moments under Leach but also suffered a few games where things just didn’t click. With quarterback Will Rogers returning to lead the charge and a slew of running backs and receivers at his disposal, look for the Bulldogs to put up some big offensive numbers throughout the year.

Final Thoughts: State plays some intriguing out-of-conference matchups against Memphis and Arizona and draws Georgia on its rotating SEC schedule as well as the typical slate of brutal SEC West games. Early games against LSU, on Sept. 17, and playing host to Texas A&M, on Oct. 1, are vital contests. Although the returning numbers don’t look great, the Aggies get a boost in the strength of schedule in 2022. After facing one of the toughest schedules in the nation the past couple of years, A&M catches a bit of a break this season. The Aggies do play Miami early in the season. They then face Mississippi State and Arkansas who both beat them last year before traveling to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama. If A&M can emerge unscathed or with just one loss from those four games, they should be in good shape until November. The November schedule includes home games against Florida and LSU as well as a road contest against Auburn. Those three games could well decide whether 2022 is a good or great year for the Aggies. All told, if A&M’s defense can come close to matching what it did last year while maybe forcing a few more turnovers and if the offense can score more points consistently, the Aggies could be a dark horse candidate for the SEC title and a college football playoff spot.

Overview: On paper, Texas A&M faces a tough project in 2021 with only four starters returning on offense and five on defense from a team that went 8-4 in 2021. However, the Aggies had several injuries last year with a handful of those players coming back in 2022. Texas A&M also continues to land top-notch recruiting classes which should provide some talent capable of hitting the field and contributing early.

Offense: Offensively, Texas A&M has a lot to replace. The offensive line is young but does have some experience. They have some wide-out and running back talent, but the biggest question is who will end up starting at quarterback. Max Johnson transferred from LSU after having a fairly solid season from the Tigers.

return four of five offensive line starters, two big, bruising running backs, and several receivers who contributed last year, giving Arkansas fans a solid hope that the offense will be just as good if not better than it was in 2021.

A good part of Arkansas’ success or lack thereof will come in games four and five for the Hogs as they play Texas A&M in AT&T Stadium on Sept. 24 followed a week later with Arkansas playing host to Alabama. Two losses will end any chance of competing for the SEC West title, splitting the games would keep Arkansas in contention and probably raise their profile nationally with three huge road games in October at Mississippi State, BYU, and then Auburn to close out the month. All in all, Arkansas occupies a rare space as a dangerous team coming off a surprise campaign in 2021. If the offense continues to hum and KJ Jefferson takes a step up after a solid 2021 campaign, the Hogs will not be an easy team to beat. Assisting patients in regaining strength and movement after such things as hip or knee replacement, rotator cuff repair, or back surgery, Harbin Clinic Physical Therapy Cartersville provides patients the guidance and care they need to improve their mobility and return to the activities they love. Physical therapist Dr. Chris Steele and physical therapist assistant Carol Anne Craton are two of the dedicated medical professionals who make this thriving clinic a vital part of the Cartersville healthcare community.

Craton points out that this homework often includes the patient’s caregiver as well. She says, “We have caregiver training and instruction, so they know how to help at home without hurting the patient or themselves.”Allofthat said, the professionals at Harbin Clinic Physical Therapy Cartersville are careful about allowing patients to progress at a safe pace. Dr. Steele says, “We have timelines from physicians based on surgical protocols. It’s individualized for each person. We move them along when it’s safe to advance them, pushing them carefully without overworking them.” He goes on to explain, for instance, that when patients have hip or knee replacement, they may either hesitate in pushing themselves or try to do too much too fast.

After joint surgery, initiating motion in the joint as soon as safely possible is paramount. This avoids atrophy and other complications. Dr. Steele explains, “For knee and hip surgery, the surgeons usually want them doing something that day at the hospital. Some people do a couple of weeks at home, but others are in here the next“We’reday.”

big believers in giving homework from the very first session,” Dr. Steele says. “Even coming in two or three times a week is not enough to get someone better, so we prescribe homework exercises from the very first session. And I say we ‘prescribe’ exercises because that’s the medicine we’re giving people. We help each patient find the right “dosage” exercise that’s right for them.”

PHYSICAL THERAPISTS AND THEIR COWORKERS QUITE LITERALLY GIVE PEOPLE THEIR LIVES BACK.

MOVEMENT IS THE MEDICINE

As a long-time runner, Dr. Steele saw his share of other athletes injuring themselves and needing therapeutic care. He says, “I always wanted to do something in the medical profession. I liked sports and working with athletes. Originally, I thought I would like to work with professional athletes, but after I got into it, I found out I liked working with older patients better. The older patients can be a lot of fun—they tell some great stories.” Right now, the practice’s oldest patient is 95. For Craton, her early interests in physical therapy hit close to home. She says, “I was in a car wreck when I was fourteen and had to go to physical therapy, so I saw it from the patient’s perspective. And loved it! Also, my mom had viral encephalitis [swelling of the brain] and had to go to physical therapy. I would drive her to her physical therapy appointments and watch her progress throughout her treatment. Eventually, she made a full recovery, but seeing that side of it was really impactful. From then on, I knew I wanted to do this as a career.”

Another important service of the Cartersville clinic is helping those who suffer from Parkinson’s disease. Craton is certified in the care of these patients and enjoys working with people with neurological challenges and balance issues. “Right now, there’s no cure for Parkinson’s,” she says, “but we can decrease their fall risk, improve their independence and balance—help them do more of what they want to do.” She adds, “We use what we call ‘functional component tasks’—these are personal for each patient. For instance, we may have someone who has problems getting in and out of the shower, so we focus on reproducing that movement. It’s veryAsindividualized.”withherdecision to pursue the field of physical therapy, Craton’s interest in Parkinson’s disease had its origin in personal experience. “I had a greatgrandmother who had Parkinson’s,” she says, “but she didn’t have this kind of rehabilitation. I wish she could have experienced this before she passed away.”

FOR THE GOOD TIMES AND THE BAD TIMES

Both Craton and Dr. Steele emphasize that a big part of their job is to help patients endure difficult times and, conversely, to celebrate milestones and victories in their patient's recovery. “We see people after a catastrophic injury, a tough diagnosis, or even an amputation,” Dr. Steele says, “so we’re there for those hard times. But we’re also there for the good times—like the other day we helped an amputee walk on his prosthesis for the first time.” He also points out that they worked with this patient before his amputation, helping him prepare for the difficult process ahead. “He’s been upbeat through the whole thing—a real inspiration to our other patients. And to us, too.”

READV3.COM | AUGUST 2022 V 3 MAGAZINE 41 THEDRINKINWHENROME,BEER. THE BREWMASTERS AT SYCAMORE BREWING AND TERRAPIN BEER COMPANY CREATE THE SORTS OF BEERS THAT MAKE ROME UNTAPPED AN EVENT WORTH CELEBRATING.

THE CHEMISTRY OF BREWING Brad Bergman acquired a taste for brewing beer in an unusual place, the chemistry lab at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. “I studied chemistry,” he says, “and one of my professors, Dr. Brett Taubman, was really into brewing science and brought some of that analysis into the chemistry lab.” It was Dr. Taubman who helped Bergman see his chemistry studies from a practical standpoint. “We became friends,” Bergman says, “and I would even go to his house where we’d brew some beers and develop research projects together. My senior thesis involved the study of mead, which is a honey wine fermented with different yeasts and treatments. I owe a lot to Dr. Taubman for starting my passion for brewing.”

After leaving the Boston Beer Company, Bergman did a fouryear stint at a brewery in Michigan, helping them expand and diversify their product line. A sense of restlessness and a desire to escape the frigid weather eventually made him look south. That’s when he came across Sycamore, his current

Biding his time and settling for the next best thing, he took a job as a quality assurance manager at a food manufacturer. It wasn’t brewing, but it was a job that educated him for his future work. He says, “I was fresh out of college and had no idea what I was doing, but I learned a lot of things that have stuck with me my whole career. After working there for three or four years, I started getting burned out. I wanted to get into brewing professionally.”

Bergman’s first job in the brewing industry was a leap into the deep end. He was hired by the Boston Beer Company, a major player that produces such popular products as John Adams, Angry Orchard, and Twisted Tea. He says, “My job was to make the alcohol product that went into the Twisted Tea and to also make cider. I had already been making cider at home, so I already had an interest in that.” This gave Bergman experience in working in a millionplus barrel brewery. He says, “It gave me the chance to start big instead of small. I was able to take some of my experience at the food plant and apply it there, making the products more consistent.” Eventually, he was moved into a brewery supervisor job, a plant management role that soon made him feel like a glorified babysitter. “I started wanting to get back to what had drawn me into craft beer in the first place, which was working at a much smaller scale and being more creative, with more ability to do my own thing.”

THE BIG LEAGUES

A NEW CELEBRATION OF BEER will have its inaugural launch at Heritage Park in Rome, Georgia, on September 10, 2022. It’s the first annual Rome Untapped. Pouring onsite will be from 1 to 6 p.m. VIP ticket holders are allowed early access at noon Tickets are $45 in advance and will be available until August 21st, then it’s $50 at the gate. General admission includes unlimited sampling of over 150 beers, a commemorative 16 oz. glass, and entertainment. VIP tickets are available for $100 with limited availability.

After graduation, Bergman moved back to his hometown, Asheville, North Carolina, where he hoped to break into the local brewing industry.

Events such as Rome Untapped—and the whole of the brewing industry in general—would be impossible without a gifted group of professionals who work daily behind the scenes: the brewmasters. They are the ones who make it all happen by dreaming, planning, experimenting, inventing new drinks, and improving old recipes by using a combination of time-tested methods and cutting-edge technologies. They come to this unusual profession with a love for the product and often through much struggle and sacrifice. Two such virtuosos of their craft are Brad Bergman of Sycamore Brewing and Spike Buckowski of Terrapin Beer Company.

“At that time, Asheville had the most breweries per capita of any city in the country,” Bergman says, “so the job market was super competitive. And I was considered overqualified for every open job.”

A MATTER OF TASTE AND BALANCE

A NEW PATH, A NEW LIFE

After having studied visual communications in college, Spike Buckowski had no idea he would eventually co-own and operate a brewery (Terrapin Beer Company). While running audio-visual departments in hotels, he reconnected with a college roommate who asked him if he had ever done any home brewing. Buckowski had not, but he tried it and liked it. He moved into a house that had a basement he could use as a controlled environment, perfect for honing his new craft. It wasn’t long before other people began appreciating his skill as a brewer, and his work won him some acclaim in competitions. He says, “I picked up a couple of awards and decided I didn’t really want to wear a suit and tie anymore and push audio-visual carts around hotels.” That’s when he decided to pursue brewing as a career. As he puts it: “That was a hard call to make to my dad, saying, ‘Hey, I know you just put me through college a couple of years ago, but can you break off another ten grand so I can go to brewing school?’”

READV3.COM | AUGUST 2022 V 3 MAGAZINE 43 employer. He says, “They were looking for a head brewer. They had just moved into a new facility and were looking to increase production with new systems, lots of big tanks, and such.”

At Sycamore, Bergman’s responsibilities involve creating recipes and doing research and development. He explains his job as doing “anything involved in making a tasty beer. Whether that’s evaluating ingredients, trying different recipes, or adjusting old recipes—making them better and more cost-effective. I take charge of that from all angles.”

SPIKE BUCKOWSKI

After his training at the American Brewers Guild was completed, Buckowski moved to the Atlanta area, did an internship at the Phoenix Brewing Company, and then landed his first professional brewing job at the Atlanta Brewing Company. There he worked with his future Terrapin business partner, John Cochran.

A DIVERSION OF DESTINY

When asked to explain what, for him, makes a beer a good beer, Bergman says, “There’s a lot of subjectivity to what makes a good beer. People have different tastes and things they appreciate. For me, what makes a good beer is it’s got to be drinkable. You don’t want to be bombarded by any one flavor. It has to have a balance, a little bit of every component. A little hops, a little yeast character. No one flavor distracting from the overall experience. It takes a lot of effort to balance all those things. Stylistically, some beers stray toward one side or the other, but in the end, what makes a good beer is you can taste the hops along with the other characters.”

At that time, Terrapin only served on draft in Athens, Georgia, but they began distributing in Atlanta. They came out with another award-winning beer, a golden ale. “Originally,” Buckowski says, “we called it Terrapin Extreme Cream Ale. Everything was ‘extreme’ in those days, extreme deodorant, extreme Doritos.” They entered their Terrapin Extreme Cream Ale in the World Beer Cup that year and medaled again. Buckowski says, “We had a saying back then: Two years, two beers, two medals.” After that, they began contracting with a Mexican brewery in Atlanta. Eventually, Terrapin bought up the Mexican brewery’s equipment, finally lined up some investors, and opened Terrapin Brewery in Athens, Georgia. Justifiably proud of this achievement, Buckowski says, “Twenty years after we started, Terrapin is still going strong.”

Both Sycamore Brewing and Terrapin Beer Company will be represented at Rome Untapped, and they invite the public to drop by and sample their outstanding, award-winning brews.

One day, Buckowski, his boss, and Cochran decided to do a little “team building” by attending an afternoon Atlanta Braves baseball game. The next day, the company’s owner was so angry that they had gone to the game that he chewed out Buckowski’s boss. Then he gave all three of them paint rollers and buckets of tar and made them tar the brewery’s parking lot. This demeaning punishment made Buckowski say, “Well, screw that guy! We’re gonna start our own brewery!” He goes on to say, “That’s the day we started kicking around the idea of doing our own thing. At first, it was sort of a joke. We tossed around names—I suggested Terrapin, and it stuck. Really, we didn’t know what the hell we were doing. We were just three guys with a dream.”Eventually, Buckowski’s boss dropped out of the picture and Buckowski and Cochran began scheming about how they could start their own business. They came up with a business plan, but no one wanted to loan them money to start a brick-and-mortar brewery. While they were trying to figure out what to do, Cochran took a new job as a distributor—learning that side of the business—and Buckowski went to work for Black Bear Brewing Company in midtownBuckowskiAtlanta.and Cochran made an agreement with Black Bear that would allow Terrapin to do contract brewing, using Black Bear’s equipment to produce Terrapin beer. However, before that could come to fruition, Black Bear ran out of funding and the business dried up. “After that,” Buckowski says, “John and I drew up a new business plan and looked for our own funding.” Eventually, they reached a contract brewing agreement with the Dogwood Brewing Company in Atlanta. That year (2002), Terrapin released their first beer, Rye Pale Ale. They entered it in the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado. Buckowski says, “We won the best pale ale in the country. We got a gold medal, beating out ninety-two other entrants.”

Ian Griffin, co-owner of V3 Magazine and one of the organizers of Rome Untapped, says, “We want to create an interactive atmosphere for our ticket holders. Our beer, ciders, and seltzer selection are certainly the focus. The games, football lounge, vendors, food trucks, and music are going to create a great environment. Also, our presenting sponsor BWS [Business Water Solutions] will provide complimentary water to keep people hydrated between samples.”
