eddings are the celebration of a couple’s love and the joining of two families. Few understand this more than Elaine Abercrombie, manager of Greene’s Jewelers (328 Broad Street, Rome), and her long family history in the jewelry business has enhanced her ability to help the bride and groom find the perfect symbols of their vows. And since she is a daughter of Northwest Georgia, she strives to make sure each piece that leaves her door is matchless and special to her neighbors, family and friends. With 65 years of service, it is easy to see why Greene’s is a place where a bachelor can find his diamond in the rough. Abercrombie, and the knowledgeable staff at Green’s, provide a wide array of services not found at a typical jeweler. “We try to provide styles that are different from the chain stores, so that when a newly engaged bride shows her ring, people won’t say they know someone with a ring just like that,” says Abercrombie. Having two graduate gemologists onsite, and the ability to create custom settings, ensures the bride-to-be will have the ring she always dreamed of. “If people come in with a picture or an idea, we can actually draw a sketch and we can have the setting made. It generally takes about a month to have a ring specially made.” Gentlemen, fear not. The seasoned staff at Greene’s will walk you through your purchase step by step, and meet any budget demands with assistance. “We try

to make it as easy as possible on the grooms, because it is a daunting decision. Maybe a man can go out and buy a truck or a gun with no issues, but sometimes buying jewelry can be outside his comfort zone,” explains Abercrombie. Greene’s focuses on the cut and the number of imperfections in the diamond, to offer stones with remarkable brilliance. “It doesn’t matter what shape the diamond is cut into, it’s all about how well it is cut into that shape.” All the diamonds at Greene’s are carefully selected according to meticulous standards, so customers will always get the perfect stone for the price. And since a greater number of folks are tightening the belt nowadays, in-store financing, layaway and free appraisals are offered to the guy who is hoping to not break the bank when choosing a ring for the love of his life. “Right now the halo style is popular. There is a halo of diamonds surrounding the stone,” she says. “Also the solitaire or the tiffany mounting is popular—and has been for close to a hundred years.” At Greene’s you can also find a unique selection of men’s bands, and gifts for the wedding party. “We can also order pearls to match the bridesmaid’s dress. This is a wonderful gift because they can wear the pearls again after the wedding.” So, stop in and let the family who is four generations deep into the jewelry business help you pick a timeless piece to represent your love. The staff at Greene’s wants to show you why this business is a passion and not a profession. “I sell moments, celebrations, and memories,” says Abercrombie. “It brings me great pleasure to be a part of that.” VVV CONTACT GREENE'S JEWELERS BY PHONE @ 706.291.7236, OR ONLINE @ GREENESJEWELERS.COM vini vidi vici / v3 magazine

ost women dream of their wedding day long before it becomes a reality. They put on their mother’s high heels, help themselves to the make-up drawer, and wrap themselves in a white bed sheet to create a long train that slides behind them on the hardwood floor. When they peer into the mirror, they see the perfect face, the perfect young man, and the perfect dress. At five years of age, Alison Smith bounced around her aunt’s bridal boutique and soaked in the joy of seeing the emotional connection a bride forms with her ideal wedding gown. Smith, now owner of The Perfect Dress of Rome (2013 Shorter Avenue, Rome), took the reins of her aunt’s business of love in 2010, as she promised she’d always do. It comes as no surprise that Smith would be the perfect person to help in selecting a dress for the walk of a lifetime. Her bubbly personality is comforting when gazing at the walls of gowns to choose from. And ladies can 6

be happy to know that she tries to keep her selection innovative and fashion forward. “We specialize in designer gowns, and we carry a couple of lines that no one else in this area has,” she explains. “We have the Essence of Australia line that is very different than a lot of lines around us, and Allure Romance is a brand no one in our region really carries.” But if there is a popular designer who has the look for you, Smith can accommodate your needs. “Some lines that we do see more often are Mori Lee, Jasmine, and Sweetheart Bridal. So, we do have many different lines to choose from.” Smith’s approach to selecting her choices of which gowns to carry is primarily focused on the look, but she also considers another aspect a new couple can appreciate. “The reason I carry so many different brands is not only the styles that come with the different designers, but there are also different price points. We have gowns to fit every budget,” she says. Shopping at The Perfect Dress al-
lows you to find the high-end and the bank account-friendly dresses. But one thing she assures is the satisfaction of the client, no matter the cost. The Perfect Dress leaves no stone unturned when it comes to outfitting your wedding party. She has the groom and bridesmaids covered as well. And the fellas can be happy to know she offers much more than the standard black and white tux found on most grooms. “We have tuxedos, and the colors are in. We have a nice new blue suit that is popular. We are also seeing a lot of khaki and linen looks. And, we have lots of requests for the grays, of course,” Smith says. “We do have the traditional black tux, but the new blue color looks really good.” “I really encourage scheduling a consultation, because when you come in the shop you are looking at over 200 gowns. We have 90 minute appointments, so we really take the time to find out what their vision is for the wedding,” says Smith. And since she does carry bridesmaid’s dresses as well, she suggests booking the rest of the wedding party on a separate day, to ensure the special lady gets all the attention she deserves. Having eight years of services for the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce has given Smith a respect for her community of friends and family. She understands the importance making sure she goes the extra mile for those community members who enter the doors of her shop, asking her to assist in making one of the most important decisions of their lives. “I usually know the person who comes in for help. If I don’t know them, I usually know their mom or another family member. Buying a dress for your wedding is a really big decision, and a really emotional time. We enjoy building a relationship, and helping you through that process.” VVV CONTACT PERFECT DRESS OF ROME BY PHONE @ 706.234.5532, OR ONLINE @ PERFECTDRESSOFROME.COM

lashes will pop and people will pose on the day a couple exchanges rings, and it helps to have a professional behind the lens. Amanda Nelson, owner of Michy Photography, has an all-angles approach to shooting weddings, making her photos as unique as her business’ name. Before graduating from Valdosta State in 2008 with a degree in Spanish education, Nelson was able to discover a passion for taking pictures while working part-time for a well-established photographer named Derrek Vaughn. During

her two years under Vaughn, Nelson was able to pick up on many key elements that now form a great picture, professionally speaking. “He took me under his wing and taught me about lighting, creative angles, and unique styles,” she recalls. “As I learned, I developed my own clientele and style.” Since she is a Roman native, Nelson headed north after receiving her degree and secured a teaching position in Douglasville, Ga. However, she found it difficult to trade her camera for a blackboard and chalk. “I was teaching full-time but still doing photography on my own. I was working weddings and family shoots, freelancing,” she explains. “I loved it. It was something I wanted to continue doing. It became more than just a college job.”
Nelson would eventually give in to her passion and form Michy Photography. Her Spanish background would be the inspiration for her choice of business name. “My middle name is Michelle, which in Spanish is 'Michy.’ It was unique and I felt like it would stand out." Nelson’s pricing is one factor she says keeps her booked solid during the wedding

season, but she enhances her business by offering a second photographer to clients: her mother. Vickie Brawner, as fate would have it, is also a professional photographer, and is on-hand to assist Nelson by client request. Not only does Brawner make sure that every hair is in place and every tie is straightened, but the additional camera captures the
perspective of both the bride and the groom. Even before the walk down the aisle, candid shots of both parties in waiting are snapped to preserve every moment of the ceremony. Michy Photography offeres live engagement, pre-wedding and wedding-day shoots. “Live engagement shoots have become an exciting and priceless part of the engagement day," Amanda says. She is willing to travel to photography these special events. After the big day, all photos taken are digitally edited for quality and the couple can be happy to know there is no limit on the photos she will release. “I don't make my clients pick and choose. They will receive the complete collection of photos for the day," Nelson explains. All photos will be delivered on a CD. When asked why she loves to shoot weddings, her answer sheds light on her connection to her art. "It is an honor to be hired to serve a bride and groom, and my goal is to capture the raw, real emotions of love and joy so they can become viewed memories, forever." FLOWERS OF ROME
ith 60-plus wedding dates already on the books, it is fair to say the proof is in the petunia. Denise Mansfield, owner of Flowers of Rome (868 Spider Webb Drive, Rome), has gathered a staff of seasoned professionals who enhance her 35 years of experience in floral design. This April, she celebrated her oneyear anniversary at the Rome location, and also won the People’s Choice award at the 2013 Rome Business Expo. Now, Denise would like to let excited couples know why she is the florist of choice for their upcoming weddings. Business is still blooming in her Centre, Ala. location, and now Northwest Georgia is taking notice. At Flowers of Rome, no job is too big or too small. Mansfield’s humble little shop overflows with her passion for helping brides realize their vision more accurately than they could have ever dreamed possible. “I have brides who come in on Wednesday and tell me they are getting married on Saturday; or, if they come in here and say they only have $300 to spend on everything, I will find a way to help this girl and make it work,” Mansfield says. “My main goal is to make her day as magical as it can be.” 10
Large ceremonies can also be accommodated by Flowers of Rome, given that each member of her staff is a veteran florist accustomed to dealing with high volume. “We can handle all of the ‘people’ flowers, decorations for the reception and rehearsal dinner, altars and pew markers,” Mansfield explains. “We can also provide backdrops and props, as well as decorations for the food tables and the cake.” Since the big day is filled with appointments and preparation, she covers all aspects of the décor, making Flowers of Rome a one-stop-shop for everything to make the special day gorgeous. Mansfield is getting requests for many different variations of the accessory that every lady heading down the aisle holds dear, her bouquet. “I am seeing a lot of mixing the old and vintage with the new pop styles,” she says. However, one of her favorite bouquets to create is making a comeback. “The timeless and classic looks are coming back. You really can’t beat it. It’s just beautiful. Like the cascades. The arrangement is on a holder and it drapes over and flows down to a point.” She makes sure she listens to every client, and will create the perfect floral vision, with attention to the smallest details. As a member of the Northwest Georgia Wedding Professionals and the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce, Mansfield sets her standards high. She does run her business to be profitable, but money is not reason she has never had a bad day at work since discovering her passion for everything floral while still in high school. “Working with flowers is an emotional business. We are designers who create works of art with flowers. We are not just sending out arrangements, we are sending a message, an image, and a theme. When I give the bride her bouquet, and she burst into tears of joy, it keeps me ecstatic about what I do.” VVV

he cameras will certainly be flashing during your trip down the aisle, so it is important that every bride look her very best. Fortunately, right here in downtown Rome, one can find big-city expertise coupled with smalltown charm. Vannah Kitchens, esthetician/co-owner of Stella Blu Cosmetic Boutique (200 Broad Street, Rome), would like to offer brides a picture-perfect complexion their husbands will remember for a lifetime. And what about the groom, you might ask? Kitchens has them covered, as well. She is a licensed esthetician who covers a wide range of services to enhance your wedding-day cosmetic look, even when amateur photographers in attendance capture the most candid of scenes. And since every bride-tobe has preordained a certain standard of beauty she wants to meet, Kitchens, in

Then we will do their makeup and they wear it the rest of the day to make sure there is no irritation, that it wears well, and that they like it in general.” She also suggests scheduling your consultation on a day your picture will be taken, so that you can see the drastic difference hi-definitiongrade cosmetics can make in front of the camera. “It photographs so differently," says Kitchens. “The makeup doesn’t have sunscreen or zinc oxide in it, so it won’t reflect the flash.” And since she empathizes professionally with the pressures of organizing a wedding, Kitchens even allows the bride to come

Smashbox and Cargo, in particular, are brands that Kitchens has found to work extremely well under all hues of photographic lighting. “Smashbox is formulated especially for photography," Kitchens says. “It is used frequently for runway shows and TV.” Through the cosmetic work she herself has done for several Rome and Atlanta-based TV commercial shoots, Stella Blu’s resident beauty expert assures her clients that they will walk down the aisle, out to reception, and on to the honeymoon entirely confident. Stella Blu also provides waxing, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and a special loft area for the girls to get together over mimosas and hors d’oeuvres any time leading up to the big moment. There is even space in the store to bring in your hair stylist—you know, just to ensure that everything is perfect as the countdown steadily ticks. For the groom in your equation, Stella Blu carries a fantastic—and masculine— line called Jack Black. “The kits come with products like lotion, deodorant and beard lube," Kitchens explains. “It smells really nice.” It’d be a pretty risky move not to visit Stella Blu before committing to a cosmetic concept. he conventional location for swapping rings is usually underneath the steeple of the church. While there is nothing wrong with celebrating unconditional love in a chapel, couples who are looking for a unique venue that mixes oldworld charm with modern chic need not look any further than The Homestead at Cloudland Station (9862 Hwy 193, Chickamauga). John Tatum, owner and CEO of the stunning mountain retreat that is Cloudland Station, has recently added an event locale near the entrance of his development that is the perfect spot to jump the broom. Tatum has erected three structures that can be reserved for the special day. All of the architecture blends perfectly with the backdrop of Lookout Mountain, and the welcoming shimmer of Lake Angela. The Amish barn, constructed during 1800s in Pennsylvania, was moved to the site and carefully reconstructed with charming 21st century finishes. The adjoining farmhouse blends stylish Italian influence with functionality by housing the bridal suite, along with other wedding day necessities. Finally, a slate-roofed carriage house completes the site, wrapping the formal green in all the splendor of the distant past. All of the buildings at The Homestead allow the bride and groom to get creative when designing their own unique themes. “The idea here was to create a large enough barn setting that could be both elegant and rustic,” Tatum explains. “We have had very rustic
weddings with hay bales, as well as, weddings with chandlers and sheers hung everywhere by a designer who did a beautiful job. The middle range was the Pinterest wedding, with all kinds of clever things—like old heirloom drawers filled with muscadine jellies and Pixie Stix in mason jars as wedding favors. All of that was just beautiful.” A careful color pallet was chosen to enhance the natural beauty of the old barn. Tatum decided to use a barley color for the ceiling to highlight the dark-mocha hue of 16

the exposed beams crossing overhead in the room. An outside wall of the barn is lined with tall windows, flooding the room with natural light. And hanging from the ceiling are old tractor-wheel chandeliers, which give needed luminance to the loft area of the barn, accessible only by the double ended wooden staircase spanning the back of space. The antiqued hardwood floor sprawls towards two massive doors that open to a breathtaking view of the lake at the other end of the barn, making the setting the ideal place to dance the night away.

Steps away from the barn is what Tatum refers to as the “Italianate farmhouse”. The twostory house, known as Peacock Hall, houses a full bridal suite complete with dressing rooms, full length mirrors, and space for hairdressers. Also, there is another surprise inside its walls. “They can bring their own caterer. We talked to a lot of caterers and found out what types of things they would like to have onsite, and we created a full cratering kitchen,” he says. The second story of the entrance to Peacock Hall is open, exposing the unique craftsmanship of the ceiling, and just outside the front door is a porch framed by white columns
and a gorgeous green lawn. A brick walkway, reclaimed from an old manufacturing facility in Rome, Georgia, forms a border around the green space, providing a wonderful area to snap photos of the bride and groom. Making Tatum’s vision complete, is the carriage house which is nestled just to the side of Peacock Hall. The carriage house holds supplies needed for the wedding, such as bar top tables, lighting, and other décor, but also adds to the southern allure that is found all over the Homestead. The multi-colored rock walls and double carriage doors blend right in with the rest of the handsome property. The wedding party is not limited to hav-
ing the ceremony in designated areas. Once the space is reserved for your date, feel free to use it as you see fit. “Some people may have the wedding outside on the green, and use the barn for the reception,” Tatum says. “I remember having a wedding that was outside. At the last minute, the weather got rainy and they were able to move into the barn and have a beautiful wedding. One of the brides called me the day after the wedding and said that she thought her wedding was going to be a disaster but it was perfect. She said her guests enjoyed the barn so much that they talked about it all night, and the ambience was wonderful.” The Homestead seems far removed from civilization, but in reality, the property is only minutes from downtown Chattanooga. So, those folks who are out-of-towners can find lodging just down the road. “The road we are located on basically turns into Broad Street. Broad Street runs by both the Read House and the Chattanoogan. Both are only 13 minutes away,” Tatum explains. “But I do have plans to put about eight to 10 cottages on the hill behind the venue in the future.” Tatum recommends booking your date roughly 12 months in advance to ensure the date is available. Check the website thehomesteadvenue.com reservation instructions, and a complete list of all the bells and whistles. When choosing the place where great memories are made, the Homestead at Cloudland Station is sure to make your day unforgettable. fter the happy couple says “I do”, the wedding guests are normally treated to a wonderful meal and lots of laughter and memories. At the center of the buffet is a dessert that serves as a reflection of the newly-joined pair’s love for each other. Few can translate the emotion the special union into a masterpiece that looks just as wonderful as it tastes. Kenya Brooks, owner of Yellow Cake Company (Chattanooga, TN), has changed the name of her cake boutique; however, her attention to detail still yields bake creations that are oh-so-sweet. Formerly B. Sweet Cake Boutique, Yellow Cake Company was created by Brooks out of necessity, as well as, in response to a request she often hears from her clients. “There was another person who opened up a business with a similar name close by and there started to be some confusion with clients,” Brooks explains. “There is also a funny story about my new name. Many of my very southern brides would always say, ‘I just want yellow cake’, so I thought that would be a good name for the company.” With yellow being a color Brooks associates joyous occasions and good energy, it’s no surprise she chose this name. “I want people to know that energy and excitement is something I bring to the cake table. Every order is another exciting opportunity to create which is one of the reasons I love this business,” she says. Catering to her clients is one thing Brooks takes very seriously. After graduating from UGA’s interior design program, she went to work for CDH Partners, a commercial design firm in Marietta, GA. There, she was able to develop the skills of listening to a customer, and using her artistic abilities, bring their vision to levels far beyond their expectations. With a little push from her mother-in-law, Brooks decided to trade in her drafting pencil for a wooden spoon. “I was no longer working for the design firm, and my mother-in-law decided on a whim, that she was going to take a cake design class,” she says. “I had some time on my hands, so I decided I would. It all came so easy to me because I found a lot of artistic freedom in decorating cakes.” After the class, Brooks tested the waters by baking cakes for friends and family. Soon, she had a list a mile long. And the more she found herself in the kitchen, the more fulfilled she became. “I looked into culinary school at one point in my career, but I never would have imagined this business would make me so happy. I guess it was just a happy accident.” “Because of my background, I can offer something unique in my cakes. In cake world, I have seen a trend in raising the level of art in the cake,” says Brooks. “I have a fine arts degree so I have done all the drawing, painting, sculpting, and studies of 3D art.” Her ability to create different textures and proficiency with a paint brush allow the bride and groom to really bring their wedding cake to life. Folks can also be sure the taste will be top quality because she

YELLOW CAKE COMPANY only uses fresh ingredients, and she buys some products from local vendors. All of her frostings and fillings are made from scratch, and are butter based. “Some people use shortening because it works a lot better in the heat, but I want the cake to taste great so I plan ahead, “she says. Her most popular flavor is the buttermilk vanilla cake, using real vanilla beans. Brooks participates in a couple of bridal shows in the area, which would be the perfect opportunity to check out her skill firsthand. She will be at the Chattanooga Pink Bridal Show
in January, and she has signed-on this year as a participant in the “Not Wedding" for the first time. The Not Wedding is a staged wedding where couple can see many different vendors in action during a mock wedding. o wedding is complete without ambience. Locales, spanning from extreme luxury to country chic, require the eye of a true professional to bring the setting to the pinnacle of its potential. Northwest Georgia is privy to the services required to impress everyone on the guest list, by creating picturesque backdrops for the bride and groom. Christopher Reece , director of operations at Reece Tent Rentals (1393 Cobb Industrial Way, Marietta), is confident his company’s 40 year history and access to state-of-the-
art resources can turn any space into a couple’s dream. A client list including 20 th Century Fox, the Westminster Kennel Club, and MTV makes his pitch rock solid, and his attention to making the day special is his passion. “We offer a wide range of things—from tents, tables, dance floors, extravagant lighting packages, air- conditioned restroom trailers, generators, and pretty much anything and everything having to do with an event or a party that is going on,” says Reece. Also, the family can relax in knowing Reece Tents has a well trained crew who will assemble the venue designs and handle the pick-up after the wedding is complete. All the newlyweds have to consider after the reception is when to leave for their honeymoon. “We facilitate it

all. We go out and hand measure the site to ensure the area they want is the best spot for the tent, where the ceremony is going to happen, and where the chairs will need to be set up.” Reece can even manage multiple locations, to meet the needs of the family. This allows them to be very creative in planning their walk to the altar, and any events to follow. If the celebration lasts into the late evening, as many receptions often do, Reece has something special up his sleeve for creating a scene strait out of a romantic movie. “We have been specializing in a type of lighting called “Father of the Bride” lighting. This is a lighting system that is arranged in the canopy of the tent. A lot of people call it constellation lighting. We first saw the idea in the Steve Martin movie, so that’s why we named it that,” Reece explains. “We can even set up the lighting indoors or in the tent, so there are really no restrictions to where we do things.” For an over-the-top affect, Reece Tents can cut a custom stencil, attach it to the front of a spotlight, and shine the message on the
Over-the-Top Affect
side of a large structure. The couple could literally celebrate a union with their name in lights. Reece can work with any time frame but, as with anything, more time produces better results. “With most weddings people usually call out about a year in advance. We also have brides who call out six months in advance—and some call and tell us their wedding is a month away,” says Reece. “We work in the movie industry, so we have learned to adapt to last minute calls, and we will try to accommodate people the best we can.” Furthermore, Reece is willing take the show on the road. They have covered weddings from Miami to North Carolina. “Reece Tent Rental will go the extra mile to ensure the bride gets the dream she is envisioning.” Offering custom lounge furniture, light-up bars, and the skill to build an acrylic floor over the swimming pool is the type of excellence one can expect when they allow Reece Tent Rental to handle their event details. But more importantly, Reece loves being able to see people really enjoying their wedding day. “I live and breathe the event industry, and we employ people who have the same passion and drive for what they do.” VVV PHONE REECE TENT RENTAL @ 404.355.1392, OR VISIT ONLINE @ REECETENTS.COM

ne aspect of a wedding capable of leaving a lasting impression on the guests, as well as the two newly-joined houses, is the food. And since the bride and groom are likely to forget to fill their bellies during the usually highly stressful day, it helps to have cuisine they simply can’t resist. Anthony Barba, owner of La Scala Ristorante Italiano (413 Broad Street, Rome), is sure his staff can provide the tastes and services necessary to bring your nuptial gatherings around a table fit for a king and queen. Barba’s eatery is known for its high-quality approach to Italian\Mediterranean menus, and La Scala has often been called upon to cater many important events in Northwest Georgia. However, he has decided to step outside of what his establishment does so well, and open his clients to a broader selection of foods. “Over the years we have realized how important it is to appeal to the customer’s needs. Now, if they need an outdoor barbecue for a reception dinner, we can do it. If they need a
low-country boil, we can provide that as well,” he explains. “If they need to cook an 80-pound pig, we have done that too.” Since widening the range of menu items available requires specialty equipment for the food preparation, Barba’s business has invested in the materials needed to handle any meal the couple may desire. He has made La Scala catering worry free for the bride and groom, allowing them to concentrate on all the other plans that surround tying the knot. He also prides himself on another aspect of a dining experience for his clients. “We feel like we are the best in Northwest Georgia at bringing great service and attention to detail to any event. Whether it is white table cloth or a picnic table, we provide unmatched service,” says Barba. And since La Scala focuses so much attention on providing superior service, his staff can’t accommodate multiple weddings in a day and give the client the attention he expects. So, book your wedding dates early on in the planning phase, to ensure your spot on his often busy calendar of events. “If you are in a pinch, and we have the date available, we will
make sure we take care of your wedding. But, more time would give us a chance to provide you with the quality and service we are accustomed to.” Anyone who has attended a function catered by La Scala can attest to the care they put into its taste. “One of the things you generally run into with large catering work is the loss of flavor. Sometimes it can be bland. The food doesn’t have a unique flavor to it,” Barba explains. “We make it a point to take each and every dish we do for a wedding and make sure the taste, quality, and execution are there—just like you are ordering an individual plate for yourself. We provide that quality on a large scale.” Choosing a menu can be challenging, so La Scala does provide a food selection list for the big day that can be tailored to fit the desires of the wedding party. “We can do everything from the bar service to the china, flatware, stemware, platters, and chafing dishes. We can provide all these things to accommodate up to 400 people,” says Barba, making it easier still to book them for all your catering needs. Depending on many factors it may take up to six months to achieve the result you want, and you can’t have the procedure with a tan, so most people schedule in the winter months. It is best to have laser hair removal by an aesthetician under the supervision of a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon to ensure quality. Three months ahead: Do you plan to dance the night away at a reception? If so, you may want to consider how to literally put your best foot forward with vein surgery. Here are some great tips on ways to look your best, and a timeline for the enhancements you may be considering. Four to six months ahead: If you’ve been thinking of a major refresh for your look, now is the time to consider plastic surgery. You’ll
want to plan time to shop for a board-certified plastic surgeon, talk with them about the areas you’d like to improve, schedule the surgery, and fully recover. Some popular procedures prior to a huge life event like a wedding include a tummy tuck, breast lift or augmentation or even a facelift. Will your honeymoon involve beach time?

Now is the time to plan Lasik surgery. Lasik can help with near or farsightedness and can correct astigmatism. There is very little down time associated with this virtually painless procedure—which incidentally is one of the most popular forms of vision correction. A Little Somethin' Extra A n ages-old tradition that occurs after the exchange of the rings and the first kiss as man and wife is the first dance. Sure, a DJ could press play to provide the music. Or, the I-Pod is a modern go-to when considering musical entertainment for the evening. What Pollard Greens (see V3 feature “Eat Your Greens” Feb. 2014) would like to offer are five men with instruments, who are able to provide an elegant evening, filled with jazz standards, bringing the entertainment to a new level of style and grace. For the guests, as well as the wedding party, John Pollard promises to give the tunes for a ceremony or a reception the live treatment. The jazz quintet, known as Pollard Greens, has made its way into the wedding circuit. Pollard, saxophonist for the band, would like to tell you why his crew is gathering clients who are considering what musical entertainment to book for song and dance. “We are all about classing up the wedding. You are not going to get “Wagon Wheel”, “Mustang Sally”, or “Brown-Eyed Girl,” Pollard says. “You are going to get classy music for a classy occasion. 28

POLL ARD GREENS
We like to really raise the level of the event.” What couples can look forward to when booking Pollard Greens is an ultra-romantic atmosphere that is perfectly suited for the celebration of a new couple. “We play songs like, “In a Sentimental Mood” or Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”. We play smooth jazz,” he says. “We can also play things like “Just the Way You Look Tonight” and “The Best is Yet to Come. Those are two songs we usually get requests for.” If the bride and groom do have a special request for the first dance, or the father dance, Pollard can arrange for his band to learn the song for the occasion. It is important to note that the band would need notice if there is a special song to be played, which is outside of the band’s set list. A vocalist can be added to the presentation, if requested, so feel free to add a singer to the line-up for your next big date.
Another service the band can provide is the sound equipment and set up. “We can provide PAs for announcements and toasts,” he says. When booking Pollard Greens, you are getting the total music package, and they work to make this aspect of your wedding as worryfree as possible. “We like to add a little something extra to your event by providing live music that you can rarely get with a DJ. We will be dressed for the occasion. We can wear tuxedoes or suits,” says Pollard. “There is also no range on time, unless we need to learn a song. We usually can play for a wedding with very little notice.” Let Pollard Greens show you what you can expect musically by dropping in at the Brewhouse on Tuesday nights where they have a standing seven o’clock gig. Then, impress the guests when you tie the knot with tunes that inspire the feelings of everlasting love. VVV

bride and groom-to-be always commission a photographer, so that they are able to look back and remember the day they exchanged vows. After the honeymoon, the newlyweds return home with even more pictures of themselves enjoying white-sand beaches or, maybe, a wooded mountain retreat. But as they return from the honeymoon to settle into the home they will now share, a problem arises: How on earth will we display these lovely pictures and ensure they last a lifetime? Siri Selle, owner of Studio Siri (1205 Dean Avenue, Rome), has transformed the location formerly know as Hanging Around Rome into a haven for everything suited to frame. And since she loves to paint, she also offers something special for any soon-to-be-wed couple looking too add a uniquely personal touch to the walls of their new home. After graduating from Shorter College in 2003, Selle began painting professionally. For seven years, her business was located inside the shopping level at Hawthorne Suites. She was excited when the opportunity arose to acquire the space on Dean Street, as it would allow her to expand her inventory to meet the needs
of her fast-growing clientele’s demands. (Note: Selle’s Hawthorne location is, however, still available to host pre-wedding parties.) Sure, Selle offers an abundance of package options for both preserving and enhancing the big day’s festivities, but she can also now provide some special services that make the entire experience unique. “We can host ‘sip-and-paint’ parties,” Siri explains. This is when a group or a couple can book the studio and enjoy some wine while creating their own masterpieces. “It’s a lot of fun, especially for the bride and bridesmaids, or bachelor parties. It’s also a nice way for family to relax before the rehearsal dinner or other events planned around the wedding.” Studio Siri offers custom framing, as well— and not just for the wedding photos, but also for creating works of art using valuable keepsakes from the ceremony. “We can make a collage using the beautiful portraits, vows and bouquet, and custom frame it,” Selle explains. “This is a very nice gift for families to give, or they can give the couple a gift card to frame their most personal and cherished items.” Siri’s talent has opened a new door for cou-
ples to have something truly original to remember the day they say I do. “I can also paint church portraits, or a portrait of any place that holds a special memory for the couple,” she says. “I can go out, take a photograph of the place, and have it ready for them before the wedding. If it’s going to be framed I would need at least two week’s notice, but I can usually finish them pretty quickly—and they are always going to look great.” Selle also paints what she refers to as “guardian angels”—i.e. impressionist-style paintings that feature human forms painted in a way that evokes deep-set emotion. She says the guardian angels have been popular wedding gifts for brides and grooms because each is truly one of a kind. Selle suggests, “The title and the painting can be something related to them personally. They are atmospheric in color and give a pleasant feeling to the room.” She adds, “I really enjoy creating memories, like the painting parties. People always seem to have the best time. I usually have them paint something relative to their wedding, and I will give them step by step instructions.” So when planning your upcoming itinerary of pre-wedding parties, think outside the box—and inside the frame—by calling on Studio Siri.
