Forever Changing, Continuously Improving By Joey Jourdant As you may have noticed, there are lots of things that have recently changed at the Virginia Aquarium. We have been working hard over the past year to complete several renovation projects, some of which were years in the making. These renovations include new carpet throughout the facility, the renovated lobby restrooms, the light poles on the nature trail, the renovated café and snack stand, the renovated seal exhibit, and the renovated Chesapeake Bay aquarium. Some of the work you may not have seen are the updates to our water quality lab, the replacement of all service and exhibit lighting with LED, and replacement of many HVAC units and sprinkler piping. Something so seemingly simple as selecting the right carpet is actually complicated and requires the involvement of many different stakeholders. Each and every decision is always with the guest experience in mind. As the facility manager at the Aquarium, I try to merge two things: function and fun. A good example of this is the new bike racks in front of both buildings. We could have used traditional bike racks, but where is the fun in that? We replaced the old ones with custom bike racks shaped like a shark and an octopus. Teaming up with our marketing staff, we have worked to make the Aquarium look its very best and will work to improve the experience continuously. Be on the lookout for upcoming projects like the installation of new graphic panels for the front entrance, renovation of the hatchling lab, replacement of the decking at the Bay & Ocean Pavilion, paving the Nature Trail, and replacement of the freshwater pond. That doesn’t include the Marsh Pavilion renovation, the addition of the vet center, and the construction of the Darden Marine Animal Conservation Center building. We’re also in the planning stage of some exciting projects that we hope to announce soon! By continuously improving the look and feel of the Virginia Aquarium, we hope to continuously improve our guests’ experience, too!
Our newly renovated café has a compost bin where you can compost just about everything on and around your plate: our silverware, snack cups, paper napkins, paper plates, salad bowls, coffee stirrers, tea bags, and all food items.

VIRGINIA AQUARIUM QUARTERLY | FALL 2018
Let's Get Curious! By Matt Klepeisz The world’s most curious monkey is making a visit to the Virginia Aquarium! Curious George, the title character in the ever-popular series of books and PBS KIDS television show, will be monkeying around with all of his friends in an exciting new changing exhibit. You might even find a full-size George or a real Man with the Yellow Hat.
Curious George™: Let’s Get Curious! brings guests into Curious George’s world and leads them through fun, interactive math, science, and engineering-based adventures! The immersive exhibit includes favorite places and characters from the classic books and television series. When you visit, you’ll encounter an apartment building where you can help George move from window to window by using pulleys, have a chance to climb the fire escape, and go inside to play with color, light, and shadows. You’ll also find the sidewalk produce stand where you can be the

customer or salesperson and help sort the fruit and vegetables. Continue your walk and you’ll climb into the construction trailer at a construction site! Design the building, make use of the building materials, and get to work constructing different structures using machines to move the materials. Looking for a photo op? Stop by the city park play area and enjoy the urban green space, rest, or give a hug to a full-size George! The park even features a busy wall full of activities for babies and toddlers. George may be curious, but you can help him out! Use pipes, ramps, funnels, turntables, bumpers, and force to experiment with physics and engineering as you putt through three holes of mini-golf. Take your visit out of this world as you climb into the rocket Curious George took on his space adventure! You may even catch a glimpse of George in his space suit and be able to take a picture from the control station and email it home! Back on solid ground, you’ll be introduced to the country as you visit the farm with George. Experience cause and effect and use wind power to move yard art like whirligigs, windmills, windsocks, and wind chimes. Care for the farm animals and learn about how to make your own whirligig. Of course, you can’t visit Curious George without going to a Museum! Learn about Curious George creator H.A. and Margaret Rey’s work, the escape from France during World War II that saved the Curious George manuscript, and Curious George throughout the years.
Curious George™: Let’s Get Curious! opens at the Virginia Aquarium on Saturday, September 22 to Aquarium members and on Sunday, September 23 to the general public! Plus, keep an eye open for some special events as Curious George visits the Aquarium!

Top Five Reasons to Volunteer By Shawn Reid Volunteering is a great way to build your resume. Are you interested in gaining new skills, knowledge and experience? Perhaps you are pondering the idea of a career change to marine science. The best way to get your foot in the door is to have relevant experience and a volunteer position at the Virginia Aquarium is a great way to start. The Aquarium offers a culture of lifelong learning. Each month, one-hour Lunch & Learn sessions are led by Aquarium experts. Hear industry leaders speak at the Eleanor & Henry Watts Conservation Speaker Series. Participate in local educational field trips sponsored by the Aquarium’s volunteer league and group trips sponsored by the Aquarium to places like the Galápagos Islands. Also, as an active Aquarium volunteer, you have the opportunity to register for classes offered to City of Virginia Beach employees. Help the Aquarium and inspire others to protect our marine environment. Whether sharing your knowledge with our young visitors through one of our early learning programs, rescuing stranded marine mammals and sea turtles, working behind the scenes with our live exhibits team, or participating in one of our clean up events, your involvement can help improve the quality of our marine environment for generations to come. Volunteering at the Aquarium also has terrific social benefits. While volunteering at the Aquarium, you will meet like-minded, motivated, positive individuals and you will have the opportunity to form relationships with lasting impact. You could meet your new best friend, a travel buddy, a future business partner, or make connections for your future career. Overall, volunteering is good for you. The experience of walking through the Aquarium’s Red Sea exhibit or sitting in front of the Chesapeake Bay exhibit on a calm day is enough to relieve stress, an important factor in a healthier life!

How does an octopus squeeze into small spaces? Octopuses are intelligent, problem solving creatures that can squeeze into the tiniest cracks and crevasses on the ocean floor to escape predators. Let's find out how this is possible.
What You'll Need Recycled plastic sandwich bag Salt dough Permanent marker Recycled 16oz plastic bottle
Instructions: Using the permanent marker, draw an octopus on the outside of the recycled sandwich bag. Place a ball of salt dough the size of your fist inside of the bag. Flatten the salt dough inside the bag to be the size of your open hand. Can the octopus you've created squeeze into the mouth of the plastic bottle? Can your hand squeeze into the mouth of the plastic bottle?
What Happened? The bones in your hand prevented you from squeezing your hand into the bottle. Octopuses are invertebrates, meaning they don’t have backbones. In fact, they don’t have any bones at all! They can fit through any hole larger than their beak. This lack of bones allows an octopus to squeeze into tight spaces to avoid being eaten.

ANIMAL FEATURE
Repeat Offender By Susan Barco When animals begin to associate food with humans, the results can be bad for the animal. As we try to solve the problem of sea turtles being hooked at fishing piers, we need to not only understand the scope of the problem, such as how many of each species are hooked and when, but also why these animals are congregating at piers. Although sea turtles are probably not trying to get hooked, they may very well see the many pieces of bait on the bottom near piers as a ‘turtle snack bar.’ In general, sea turtles are not especially picky about what they eat. Sensing lots of pieces of fish, shrimp, and squid just lying on the bottom may be too much for hungry turtles to pass up! (Like brownies sitting on a plate in the break room at work!) We hope that turtles in Virginia are not becoming habitual ‘pier specialists,’ getting their food from baited hooks instead of hunting for natural prey, but it’s something we need to investigate.
Green Apple during its most recent hook removal.
Although most of the hooked turtles that have been rehabilitated have not been recovered again, during one week in June, we recovered two ‘hooked repeat offenders.’ Both turtles were loggerheads. One was hooked and released in 2015 while the other was hooked last year. The second turtle, Green Apple, was hooked at the Ocean View pier in August of 2017, released in October 2017 and hooked again at the Ocean View pier in June of 2018. This year Green Apple was tagged prior to its June release. We are using the tag as the equivalent of an ankle bracelet to monitor its movement near local piers, especially Ocean View. Within two days of release at the Virginia Beach oceanfront, Green Apple was close to the Ocean View fishing pier and remained within approximately a mile of the pier through late July. It may take more than two stints in rehab to get this repeat offender to change its ways! Green Apple was released on June 20, 2018 from the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The graph above shows the tracking through late July.

Marsh Pavilion Closing By Chris Witherspoon With the closure of the Marsh Pavilion, your favorites are staying (just relocating temporarily)! Here’s a list of the animals moving from the Marsh Pavilion to the Bay & Ocean Pavilion: copperhead and rattlesnake; tree frogs; seahorses; fiddler crabs; blue crabs; juvenile fishes and small fish species such as blennies; and our Animal Ambassadors. In addition, the saltmarsh theme will be incorporated into graphic panels on the Scenic Overlook loop. Unfortunately, we don’t have a place to house the otters in the Main Building, BUT they will continue to be a featured species when the South Building reopens.
When the Marsh Pavilion closes on September 4 for renovations, Toddler Programs will move to the Main Building. • Toddler Tuesday storytimes | Tuesdays 10am & 11am in the Classroom
• Toddler Tuesday puppet shows | 3rd Tuesday of the month– 10am & 11am in the Promenade Room
• Playtime with Miss Jenny | Wednesdays 10am-noon, various locations in Main Building
