Harbor Seal Road Trip By Chip Harshaw Have you ever experienced the excitement of a road trip to Florida following a cold winter up north? It is the stuff of college traditions and once-in-a-lifetime family trips. In early April, our harbor seals had the same opportunity so that Aquarium staff could drain their pool, repaint the bottom, and polish the acrylic windows. So how did we move our seals to another location for several weeks? I can tell you from experience: for the seals, it’s no big deal; but for our animal care staff, preparation can take months. The first challenge was identifying a suitable facility to house our animals. Have you ever tried to find long term accommodations for seals? We needed to ensure that they would receive the same level of exceptional care they receive here, so we chose an Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums-accredited facility. We then had to coordinate the timing of our departure and return based on the necessary work in their habitat. Careful scheduling is critical during this part of planning. Another big challenge was identifying animal care staff that would travel to Florida and remain with our seals until their return. As hard as it might seem, having staff suddenly leave their homes for an extended period of time in sunny Florida was not easy and required flexibility from our entire team. We have to rotate staff between Virginia and Florida to ensure our seals always have familiar faces around them. We also had to find temporary housing and a vehicle for our staff to drive while away. Last but not least, once the work has been completed, we then need to bring our seals home, which requires some of the same preparation. Whew! Just like a vacation for most families, this trip to Florida required a lot of planning and care.

The boys are enjoying their stay!

SEE

you SOON!

A Day in the Life:

Sea Turtles By Julie Levans

Swimming, napping, and eating… Sounds like a pretty fun and relaxing day, but it’s not a dream; just ask our resident sea turtles, “Big Mama,” “25,” “Greenie,” and “Pennie” how they like it! Each of our adult sea turtles has their own unique story and personality, but share a couple of things in common. They have all been deemed non-releasable by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and they all call the Chesapeake Light Tower aquarium home.

Fresh & Fishy Our adult sea turtles total nearly 700 pounds and consume about 40 pounds of restaurant quality seafood weekly. They are fed a wide variety of food that includes shrimp, squid, herring, and smelt. Our green sea turtle loves to chow down on green peppers, carrots, and, her absolute favorite, sweet potatoes. You might catch a glimpse of them being fed in the afternoon Monday through Friday. Guests are able to get a closer look by going behind the scenes to observe a sea turtle training session on select days throughout the week in our Sea Turtles Behind the Scenes experience. During these training sessions, each of our sea turtles voluntarily participates in numerous different behaviors. These behaviors can be something as simple as coming to a station to eat or touching a target, or more complex

6

behaviors like opening up their mouth on cue. Each of the behaviors that is asked of the sea turtles helps them participate in their routine veterinary exams. Our veterinarian is able to easily check their joints, flippers, eyes, and even perform necessary medical treatments, in a relaxing way due to these captured behaviors.

Top Notch Care Twice a year, each adult sea turtle receives a physical. Our veterinarian is able to draw blood for diagnostic tests, do a visual exam, perform an ultrasound to ensure a healthy reproductive system, and take radiographs. We are also able to weigh and measure each of the turtles. Several days a week you may catch a glimpse of different objects in the aquarium. We call this enrichment. We give the turtles of a variety of items like ice blocks, jolly balls, mussels, and lettuce bars. This enrichment helps us to tap into the turtle’s natural behaviors like foraging and investigating. Our sea turtles’ most important role is playing the part of ambassador for their wild counterparts. These four sea turtles have the ability to capture the hearts of each one of their visitors, in hopes that we all protect our oceans.

s e l t r Big Mama The matriarch is Big Mama, our female loggerhead (Caretta caretta). She was found stranded during a cold-stunning event in New England in the early 1990s. She spent her recovery period in a New England facility prior to coming to the Virginia Aquarium in 1996.

25 25 is our male loggerhead. You can tell he is a male due to the concave shape of his plastron (belly) and long tail. Why the name “25, you ask? Each animal that comes to the Aquarium receives an identification number, and the last two digits of his number are 25. He can often be seen greeting guests or trying to snag a back scratch from our divers. One of his most engaging enrichments comes in the form of a flashlight that he will follow along the habitat floor just as a cat would with a laser pointer. 8

VIRGINIA AQUARIUM QUARTERLY | SUMMER 2018

Greenie Greenie, our green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) rivals Big Mama in the weight department with both animals tipping the scales at about 215 pounds. Greenie spent many years at the National Aquarium in Washington, D.C. prior to coming to the Virginia Aquarium in 1998. She loves attention from her keepers and can often be seen hanging near Big Mama.

Pennie Pennie is the smallest but oldest, turning 34 years old this year. She hatched on July 19, 1984. Pennie is our female Kemp’s ridley (Lepidochelys kempii), the most endangered of all seven species of sea turtles. Her color is yellow rather than gray, as a normal Kemp’s ridley would appear, due to amelanism, a condition defined by a lower level of melanin pigment. If you look closely, you can see her gray polka-dots.

No, really. You can meet our sea turtles! Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays | 1pm $15 for Aquarium members, $20 for non-members Go above the Chesapeake Light Tower Aquarium to observe aquarists conducting a feeding and behavioral training session with our sea turtles. OspreyWatch

A Piece of the Global Puzzle By Crystal Matthews

In 2012, the Virginia Aquarium began collaborating on a project with the Center for Conservation Biology (CCB), College of William & Mary and Virginia Commonwealth University. This project, OspreyWatch, is a citizen science project focused on breeding osprey world-wide. The mission of OspreyWatch is to collect data on a large spatial scale to address the three most pressing issues facing aquatic ecosystems, including climate change, overfishing, and environmental contaminants. The Virginia Aquarium’s goal is to collect data on the Virginia Beach osprey population, including on the Lynnhaven River. Data is collected on active nests, number of eggs, number of chicks, number of fledglings, failed nests, marine debris in nests, and more. This data is entered into the global OspreyWatch network where scientists can assess overall population trends and issues. We started collecting data during the 2013 breeding season and have continued every season since. In addition to collecting nesting data, we also band Osprey chicks. We have to be able to reach the nests via a ladder or from the top of the boat, carefully extract the chicks and then put them in a pet carrier and lower them to the boat. Once in the boat they are weighed, banded and feather samples are taken. We band the birds on the right leg with a silver U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) band and on the left leg with a purple alpha numeric band. The purple band has larger letters and numbers to read easier at a distance. The purple color also designates the Chesapeake Bay area. Once all the chicks are banded we safely return them to the nest. During the 2017 season we expanded to monitoring and banding chicks in Dam Neck Naval Base and monitoring nests in First Landing State Park. We will be out on the Lynnhaven River once again for the 2018 breeding season fulfilling the Aquarium’s mission of advancing knowledge and conservation of the marine environment through scientific studies.

Osprey Facts Osprey are a great species to study because they serve as a sentinel for our aquatic ecosystems. Their diet consists of 99% fish, they are found on every continent except Antarctica, and most breed in the northern hemisphere and winter in the southern hemisphere. The Aquarium’s OspreyWatch team consists of Crystal Matthews, Jeff Thompson, Maureen Fender, bird staff, and Reese Lukei, local raptor specialist and CCB volunteer.

ANIMAL FEATURE

Russell the Crow By Chris Equels Russell Crow is an American crow who came to us from a wildlife rehabilitator in Chesapeake. During her time there, she became very accustomed to people and was deemed non-releasable. Guests are able to see Russell in the recently renovated Carver’s Shack exhibit in the Marsh Pavilion. American crows are found throughout North America and are very common in the Hampton Roads area. Crows are opportunistic omnivores that have adapted very well to our urban areas. They are also very social and live in extended family groups very similar to our own. Grandparents, siblings, and sometimes aunts and uncles help take care of the young. At dusk you can often see large groups of crows congregating to roost for the night. These avian marvels are also one of a few non-primates to use tools. Similar to parrots, crows can mimic sounds and can be heard imitating red-tailed hawk calls in order to scare other animals away from a potential food source. Here at the Aquarium, Russell has learned to imitate a few things. She says “hello,” “what,” and can mimic a few whistles. Russell participates in our training and enrichment program as well. These trained husbandry behaviors help us provide daily care and the enrichment tactics keep her mind stimulated.

Finders, Keepers...

Knobbed whelk & egg case

By Chris Witherspoon During a walk on the beach, you might be hoping to find a fragile sand dollar, land a large whelk shell, or snag a few sharp shark teeth. Maybe you see beauty in all shells, even if they seem as plain as clams, or enjoy the challenge of identifying beach finds from just a few fragments. Whatever your interests, with a few exceptions, finders are keepers when it comes to beach finds. One exception is that you may not collect parts from protected animals such as marine mammals and sea turtles. Another is that parks and refuges often have restrictions on collecting on their beaches, and you should review these guidelines before taking anything. Finally, always check to make sure you’re not taking home a live animal inside a shell!

Keep in Mind The best times to look for shells and other beach finds are after a storm when many items are washed ashore or in winter when not as many people are on the beach.

The Virginia Beach Oceanfront is groomed daily during the “sun season” to provide guests with a smooth and clean sand surface. This process covers, removes, and crushes shells, which can make it a challenge to find anything.

...Losers, Weepers Unfortunately, you’ll encounter more than just natural finds on local beaches. The ocean is filled with trash, much of it single-use plastics. When this junk washes ashore it continues to be a hazard to both wildlife and people as well as an eye sore. EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Tim Carroll

Security Team Supervisor It’s no surprise that the Aquarium requires a watchful eye during the day, but at night, one employee makes sure that everything is safe (including our animals). For over 16 years, that employee has been Tim Carroll, the supervisor for our security team. Tim is in charge of making rounds throughout the building, including going into pump rooms, looking and listening for odd sounds or water drips, and observing the animals for unusual behavior. It’s an important job, and one Tim takes very seriously. “Occasionally, you may get some shady characters coming around places they should not, so we work hand in hand with the police department, including logging in with the Virginia Beach police dispatch nightly.” His favorite animal at the Aquarium is the sea turtle, but for Tim, it isn’t just about the animals: it’s a family affair. His wife now works in the education department as an exhibit host! His daughter was a full-time educator at the Aquarium, too, and still works an occasional boat trip and summer camps. If that isn’t enough, his son-in-law used to work in the Aquarium’s life support section until he became a City of Virginia Beach firefighter.

ATTENTION Nature Play Place Families Nature Play Place is moving closer to the Main Building and will reopen later this year. Due to nature trail repaving and the pond renovation, we are uncertain of the opening date. Please watch for updates on our website & Facebook page.
